Same points as last season!

Comments (35)

They just said on Sky Sports News that Everton have exactly the same points that they had this time last year.

Won - 4
Lost - 4
Drawn - 3

Exactly the same as this time last year... I don’t remember struggling this bad last year?

I guess in theory then we could well finish 5th again?

I wouldn’t get too excited folks, its the mancs up next and they will rip us apart. We can’t fucking string two passes together, Fellaini was shit as usual, West Ham got mugged. Thank fuck Saha’s goals otherwise we’d already be screwed already. Medicocrity bekcons for a mediocre club!

I agree Kunal, but to be honest, mediocrity must be the aim this year. If we stay in the top flight I’ll be delighted considering how we have performed all season.

Great 3 points, about time. Level with Fulham (whom everyone is singing their praises at the minute), 3 points behind Liverpool, 5 off City. Not great but, given our awful run of form recently, I hope this kicks us on and the football picks up (no doubt coinciding with Pienaar's return). We rode our luck but the players deserved it on effort alone today!

Finish 5th again?

Stupid statement. Spurs will be better than us, so probably will Villa, and then there's Man City.

We have no chance which is a shame!

With us on this bad run we couldn’t have asked for better opponents than the hapless Hammers as we've been their biggest bogey side for a good while and playing not too well we still saw them off. Pity this pesky international break will slow this bit of momentem.

I’m not saying we will finish 5th again I was just making the point that we have exactly the same points as what we had this time last season. And we went on to finish 5th then.

So it is possible.

But I would guess we’ll need contributions from Arteta, Jagielka, Pienaar, Neville and Osman for that to happen. Some goals and form from Yakubu wouldn’t go amiss either.

Actually the International break will help us.

Its Man Utd next and hopefully its a chance for some of our exhausted troops to rest up before that big game.

Will the break also give some of the injured players a chance to return? Pienaar and Osman maybe? Could Neville even have a chance to make it?

Rather go to Old Trafford with a rested squad and Osman, Pienaar and Neville.

I think by the time Jagielka and Arteta are back it may well be a little bit too late. Coming back from injury is one thing but getting back to full fittest is another and that’ll be something which will take some time and we may not see that by atleast March/April possibly even the next season after a good pre-season. Who knows?
Personally I think this season will be one of transitional and consolidation.
Next summer will be crucial with hopefully a fully fit squad with more additions then its possible to challenge again, if it’s more of the same like the past few summers, then it may be Everton will be searching for a new manager.

It wasn’t pretty but it will do.... for now.

The sad news is the way Saha was limping he looks crocked and Moyes is yet again down to the bare bones of a squad.

Yak looks slow, Rodwell needs a rest...
Given the injury news, it looks like late January before we have any chance at all of putting out a fully fit squad.

Those who shout loudest about poor tactics giz a clue about your alternatives then?...

But what if we didnt have this daibolical start . What if we had pushed on from last season....bought early and wisely , could close deals with players who really would raise the poor standard we now have, players with pace , guile and at least guts, what if we had done that ?

Right we won and no need to get carried away. But David Moyes has gone in for a kicking of late. So lets remember what is true of a Moyes Everton. Our goals come from any of our out fielders, be stiker, midfielder or defender. We will make chances and when we are a goal up we are a bugger to break down. Of course the recent results have been awful and against Benfica we looked awful and Im not going to make excuses and balme this that and the other. Nor do i think the future is now going to be perfectly golden. Some times you just have to hope and have the luck of the green. I do know that the Everton I saw today is a team that fights for each other, that tries and on its day, as this one can beat anyone. So call me a Moyes lover or overtly opitimistic is you like but things are on the mend, (and I just know the Yak & Saha firing them in for fun shortly)

Those who shout loudest about poor tactics, Giz a clue. Well Kevin, it's easy really. Get the ball and pass it to feet, then pass it to feet again. The only time you twat it long is when you are under pressure and clearing your lines.

Never play percentage Hoofball as it will never work. Passing and moving is the way it's done and never punt aimless balls down the channels for someone to chase as it will come straight back at ye.

Here's one for you, Kevin. Do you think the current Everton squad with the same players out injured would play the way they do now in 6 months time if Arsene Wenger coached them???

No, I thought not.

Wise words Kiern.

Shame we didn’t pick up the point at Bolton we deserved and take the game to Stoke and Wolves to see us up in the top 6. We’ve been decimated by injuries but we’re still in the same position as we were this time laste year. Desperately need Pienaar and Mikel back to punish the lower sides and get us back up the table.

One thing they’ve definitely got is determination and a good team ethic - just need that bit of class back to get the confidence flowing again.

I know you never meant it this way but it is ironic to say the least, some of the posters on here have been calling for Moyes’ head and all but calling nearly every one of our players useless and to drop them, however we get a little luck and get three points and it’s seemingly not ok to post optimistic thoughts now?

The only reason we have the same points, is because it has been an easier fixture list than the first 12 games last year. One a comparative fixture basis - we are 5 points down. So Trevor, no - it was worse

To complete the picture for the media darlings, Villa +2; Spurs a massive +1 - yeah on comparative fixtures just 1 point up; City +7 so they are doing much better and Fulham are +2

On the other side Pompey are -10 (after -16 last season compared with 2007-8) and 2nd worst - - yes the team which is from the other side - the Dark Side. They are 8 points down on last year’s equivilent fixtures.

But this is about us and we are likely to go under 60 points for the first time in 4 seasons.

Is the glass half-full or half-empty? Same points as last year so they say, terrible injuries to the best players, fact.

But... Unfortunatly Spurs will do well this year, Man City have the fire power and money and Villa will do well again,

Not sure where that leaves us........

A win away - I don’t care if it was against Altrincham (which former teams haven’t been able to achieve). West Ham gave it their best shot - pacey youngsters and tricky imports. They might have won.

Heitinga steadied the ship. I think he has a good future with us. Saha’s goal was that of a multi-million priced striker and when Gosling decides to hit a ball at goal he has done it very well a few times now. Interesting.

A lucky win - we deserve that now and then, and a week off to rest some very tired legs. Baines, Rodwell and hopefully Saha should feel the benefit.

Jimmy - Spurs and Man City.

City are drawing against ’lesser’ opposition. 3-3 to Burnley, at home, for example. They may come good for the hundreds of millions being poured in, its too early to tell.

Spurs lost at home to Stoke, drew at Bolton. Arry no doubt has a few tricks up his sleeve. A man who has converted bullshit into gold. Good luck to him.

The PL has always been tough, its very tough this year. Ask Senor Benitez.

Amen to that Mike - but it might be too early for Pip. I think Heitinga is finding his feet. He will be as much up for that game as any Neville I bet. I don’t bet myself, but Gosling off the bench for the winner should get decent odds.

Kevin Sparke, here’s an option for Moyes, "LEAVE HIBBERT ON THE BENCH FOR THE DURATION OF THE GAME!!!"

With a player like Neill sitting on the bench with a lot to prove, it would have been a better option. Can’t recall seeing a better own goal in my time. Does he fuckin have a left foot?? It’s daylight robbery that Hibbert gets paid as a professional football player.

Viv Sharma; "If we stay in the top flight I’ll be delighted" — Get a fuckin grip.

Jimmy Saville; " Finish 5th again, Stupid statement" — The only thing stupid about that statement is the response it produced from you. That statement is wholly relevant and opens people's eyes up to the fact that we haven’t dug ourselves in the hole most of us believe us to have. Points wise anyways.

International break coming up, new faces coming in, fingers crossed. This season is long from finished and with regards to competition such as Villa, Tottenham and Man City, seriously apart from City, as if Villa and Tottenham have improved/strengthened their squads to the point that they are beyond us...

Villa: Gave a good account of themselves last week... against a severely weakened team with no bench.

Tottenham: When don't Tottenham have an impressive run of results at some point in a season... how often do they maintain it throughout???

Man City: Their season is crumbling already.

Sure, things are bad at them moment but we just got 3 points, have a break coming up shortly, and fingers crossed, some new faces coming in to a team built on heart and consitency (at the back anyway). As if things won't improve. Get a grip.

Still a long season ahead. We started badly last season and have done the same this season. We have good players to come back into the side and even with Arteta and Jags continuing to struggle I’m really looking forward to seeing an Everton side with Bily and Pienaar down the flanks... how long has it been since we had two proper footballers down both wings?

We’re poor at the moment, but the signs were there on Sunday that we can be resilient again. A couple of flukey wins and draws would do us the world of good.

I still think we’ll finish ahead of Villa and Spurs.

Just goes to show how ridiculous all the "this club is sinking" comments on this site are. If we don’t have the same number of points at the end of the season then fill yer boots.

I actually think this season is harder than the last, the level has raised considerably, the Mackems and Stoke have bought and started well, apart from Pompey and Hull there’s no real duds in there. Anyone that thinks West Ham are a pushover haven’t got a scooby, even without their first choice striker.

Lets just wait and see. Last season we played without forwards for much of the season and without Arteta for around a quarter of it.

We have a better squad we just need to get them fit. The quality of the league this season is poorer or more even depending on your viewpoint so there is no need to be quite as gloomy.

At this moment, I look at it this way: we have influential players unavailable; we are having to fill the bench with untried kids; we are competing in the most unforgiving league in the world. So, to me, it’s not surprising that we are struggling.

However, we’ve been beaten in the Europa League by a far superior team to the one we could realistically field for the tie, would I expect the same result or performance with our first team out? No, I wouldn’t and I don’t think any of you would either.

We could’ve easily lost to Stoke and Wolves but we got a point; as for Villa they fielded their best 11 and (apart from a 25 minute period in the second half) we more than matched them.

The doom mongerers on here make me laugh, the simple fact is we are having to make do with a team that is not up to full strength by any stretch of the imagination. We need to dig in and grind out results. If that means playing shite football and winning at this moment in time, I will take that all day over playing pretty football and getting hammered every week.

If any of you have noticed the fixture computer has been very kind to us during the run in at the end of the season. If memory serves me correct we don’t play anyone who are currently in the top six in any of our last 11 games.

Assuming we can keep grinding out results and keeping ourselves close to the top six places and assuming the injured players start returning (and returning to form more importantly) then we still have a chance.

What January brings buying-wise we will never know but come on, we are not as bad you you all say we are and I for one want us all to get behind the team obviously with the hope that we can turn the corner and push for that European place at the very least. Oh and another final would do very nicely please.

Finishing 5th will be very tough. But you never know, with players coming back, some consistency could return and we could go on a run like we did last year. We’re on the same points as we were this time last year... and yes, I know we face Man Utd and Liverpool in 2 out of the next 3 games but the corresponding games last year were Wigan, Spurs and Aston Villa and we lost them all! It was only after that late winner from Ashley Young in December that we started to turn the season around.
