Hopes & Expectations

Comments (11)

This time last year, my wife and I made the fairly major decision to uproot and move to Canada. Work was crap and the economy was getting worse and worse. An opportunity presented itself, which was too good to turn down so off we went, leaving friends, family and my beloved EFC behind.

I had been a season ticket holder for 7 years, traveling from Birmingham every home game. The Gwladys Street was my church and boy did I worship!

I miss it. I miss the whole god-damn thing. I miss getting up at 7:30am on Saturday and waiting, usually hung over, for my dad to pick me up. I miss us putting the world to rights on the way up the M6. I miss our mates Andy, James & Will joining us on the trip and the inevitable Alan Partridge impressions! I miss my fry-up on County Road. I miss the rest of the lads arriving in the Chepstow and the anticipation of the game, no matter who we were playing. I miss the buzz on County road and people rushing to get inside Goodison in time to catch Z-Cars. I miss the smell of horse shit. Christ, I even miss the Everton Corporate 'Tent' at the Park End!

Now, watching Everton (from afar) has been nothing short of depressing this season. I know there is not one of you out there who will disagree with me.

Watching from Canada gives you a sense of complete helplessness. I can't help, I can't turn up on a Saturday and scream my fucking lungs up in an attempt to get the team going. I'll be honest with you, it's difficult.

I know performances on the pitch, and shanannigans off it, have caused divisions amongst supporters, the likes of which I cannot recall in the 20 years I have been watching Everton. Fighting in the stands, bitching on message boards — not the typical behaviour of Everton Fans.

So I'm asking you all for a bit of a favour. Please could you all try and pitch in for me on Sunday.

I'll be watching in a pub full of Kopite twats, most of whom have cockney or Canadian accents and have never been to Anfield. They'll be there in their replica kits and red & white scarves. There will be a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone and they will be hopping up and down like a set of wankers to that Torres song, as if they are really at the match.

I won't. Watching the game in the pub in Canada is as far removed from the match as you can be.

So please, if you are going, enjoy it. We're playing badly and the future of the club is at a cross-roads, that is true. But the fans need to have one voice, a united front. No fighting, no bitching and slagging off our own players, no berating the Chairman or the Manager.

This is Everton we are talking about. I love them. You love them. Show it.

Richard the majority of blues globally know more than that shower, remind them theri season finished in November. Rafa went to confession the other day, he was waiting outside the confessional when he heard the priest say "come forth my son", the FSW answered "Come Fourth? I’ll be amazed if we come tenth"

Richard I’ll be giving it loads from the Main Stand, and I’ll shout a little louder just for you.

I can feel your pain coming up, Richard. My wife and kids will be moving to the east coast of America in a few years and I too wonder how I will feel when not being able to watch the lads. It is the little things like the combined scent of horse shit and chips that I am sure make you nostalgic.

We seem to be at a cross-roads for sure at this moment, but maybe Moyes is right, now the whole Kirkby disaster is over (I think), the team might just settle down a little, investors may even creep out of the woodwork, Bill may finally step aside in response to a mega billionaire offer to buy the club, and just maybe we will finish top four this season! ;)

Optimisism is a real strong point of Evertonians!

On another note, you have picked a great place to live; we went to Toronto 3 years ago and it’s so nice, loved it! It must have been hard to leave family, friends and everything you know behind?!

Richard - god bless you in your new life, and may it suit you well.

You must have bought your first season ticket about 2000. You must be a believer. So keep believing. And it will come true.

Nobody is going to surrender tomorrow. Period.

I feel for you, Richard. I live in America and I’ve been a blue for years. There is way too much redshite over here and they’re not even real fans, just a bunch of front-runners and fair-weather supporters.

Now that they aren’t doing as well, I haven’t heard much from them. They’ve started to not pay as much attention just because they aren’t playing as well. Keep supporting Everton, no matter what!

Terrific comments, Richard, and just to add a little something to your article, I have been a Blues supporter for nearly 60 years but with the proviso that for the past 34 of those years it has had to be a long-range love affair. From 74-80 in New Zealand and from 80 to the present here in Oz.

One thing has always remained the same and that is the days leading up to any Everton game brings on the irritable bowel syndrome plus the cold sweats. One thing I can guarantee you though mate is that it never gets any easier, regardless of how bad or good a team the Blues put out.

Mate, keep living out the faith and it will get better, good luck to you and yours in Canada and here’s to lads in Blue this weekend.

ps: I haven't had to take a laxative since 1952 thanks to that team of mine!

Fantastic piece, Richard. I’m not a cradle born, but an "adopted" Everton fan. So your description of your game days and your appreciation of them are inspiring.

Living in the US, and I’m sure Canada is pretty much the same, Pat hit it dead nuts on. 99% of the LFC fans here are plastic fools and have no clue about the club they follow. Try not to puke when you see the posers acting as if they’ve been with them since the 50s. Truly digusting by any true sports fan’s barometer. Watch their numbers dwindle when their club goes into financial meltdown. Bandwagon hoppers never stick it out through tough times — and they are on the cusp of Hell presently.

Best of luck to you over here in North America. When you’re done freezing your ass off north of the border, I’d suggesting looking into a move to Florida. You might miss the smell of chips and horse shit, but at least it’ll be 75 degrees and sunny.

Easy to say that we should shout our heads off, Richard, and no doubt every Evertonian will try. But when you are watching utter shite football with no passion or effort and you have paid half a week's wages to do so, then it is not so simple.

Our football this season is the worst in my memory and the fans need to be given something back from these so-called players if we are to fully play our part.

Every one of our players gave it their all today, but Lady Luck was against us on this occasion.

We played with a high degree of confidence and even though we lost, I cannot see us not pulling out of this mess.
