Back Four Hokey Cokey?

Confirmation came on the OS today that, because Atletico Madrid are now in the Europa Cup, Heitinga will not be available to play in that competition for us. Donovan and Senderos are eligible. For some of our number, this will decisively answer the question about Moyes bringing in another CB.

But another item on the OS today makes interesting reading. Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld expresses his delight at Senderos joining us and waxes lyrical about the player. While Hitzfeld might not be a household name, just a glance at his record as a coach - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottmar_Hitzfeld - should make us think he must know what he's talking about.

I hope he's right, and if we do progress in Europe we might be grateful that Moyes decided to strengthen the squad as he did.

I think this move was necessary to progress in the next round against Sporting and maybe the round after that. I think this was a move for the immediate future, just to get by until Jags is fit.

I hope Senderos does well though. I’d like to see Moyes get a selection headache at CB with Senderos, Jags and Heitinga. That probably won’t happen until about April as Jags will need time to get fit.

I haven’t seen anything yet from Senderos that would suggest he is on the same level as Heitinga and Jags. But he has 2 more months to get comfortable in the squad and maybe he’ll do well when he settles into a regular starting position.

I’m struggling to find the Uefa rule which precludes us from registering Heitinga just because his former club are in the competition...

Seems like a ridiculous rule to me.

He’s our player.

Personally I think it’s just a puff-piece for the Swiss media, as their national team isn’t blessed with star names; but if Senderos buys it and puffs out his chest a little more, Everton’s gain.

On the other hand, and if memory serves, Hitzfeld has won the "world coach of the year" award at least once, as Bayern boss, thus commands authority with his opinions. Clearly respects the boy, judging from his desire to play him, despite lack of first-team action. All told — helpful...

The thing I don’t understand about Senderos is, why would Wenger let him go when they had no cover at the back, and then bring in a 35-year-old Campbell who had hardly kicked a ball? There was no rumours of a rift etc, so obviously Wenger knows something we don’t... well, apart from his lack of pace.

I cant understand why the aquisition of Senderos is questioned by many and yet the purchase of Distin is generally regarded as good business.

On the one hand, we have a 24-year-old international centre-half who has no pace but is good in the air — he cost nothing.

On the other hand, we have a 31-year-old centre-half who miss-places most headers and is constantly out of position. Oh and he cost £5 million... ????

Senderos was good business for a club with no money.

Just re-read Keith & Ciaran’s post, and couldn’t believe my eyes... What the hell is going on? We sign a player,on a permanent basis, and he can’t play in the same competition as his former club? I am absolutely incredulous!

Does this mean that if we signed Robin van Persie for example, that he would be ineligible to play in the Premier League? We’re not even playing his former club, so how can Heitinga’s contribution for us, possibly be factored against Atletico’s fortunes? IT IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!

Obviously we’ve all heard of loan-signings not playing against the club holding their registration, but this takes the cake. The law (or the contractual terms) is an ass... Staggered.

Mike I agree...

Senderos is very good signing for a club like us — who are skint... the guy is young and has a lot of potential...

Pace should not be an issue for a centre half with good timing and awareness — I’ve seen him display this attribute with regularity...

I must say, I agree with Mike Elbey, Sylvain Distin looks shite, and he seems to be made of glass the amount of odd games he misses.

Senderos on a free is good business, an experienced international who has played for two great clubs in Arsenal and AC Milan.

Of course the Swiss manager is delighted he is possibly getting more game-time before the World Cup, the Swiss National Team are not blessed with many household names... Tony Hibbert would've won 80 caps by now if he was Swiss.

Ciaran, just wondered where you had seen the attributes you mention with regularity?

He has only played 1 prem game and 2 league cup games this season for Arsenal, and last season he was at Milan and only played 20 games, was injured for the rest of the season, before Milan decided not to take up the option to buy him.

No great mystery, his early days at Arsenal were very promising.

I'm gutted about Johnny H not being available for this — the whole cup tie rule is a shambles anyway.

If you buy or borrow a player, you are buying or borrowing a player to play in the games you choose — not what Uefa dictates. The cup tie rule should be scrapped all together (eg, last year Jo played 18 mins in a 3rd round defeat to a lower league team but then could not represent us).

I can fully understand how when a player goes on a season loan and is not allowed to face his parent club... but fuckin sack the cup tie rule and, as I said the other day, fuckin sack the transfer window system.

The whole Europa Cup is a shambles, particularly allowing 3rd best teams in from the Champions League — after all, they have finished in the bottom half of their group.

What other competition awards prizes to fourth place too other than Uefa, you get nothing for coming fourth in the Olympic games, you dont get up on the podium at a Grand Prix for coming fourth.

I heard rumours the Europa Cup winner goes into the Champions League, is this a rule they have created for the Shite, they already allowed them in for winning it after they come fifth.

We have to play at 5:45 pm because of the Shite, we have been playing on Thursday in this competition for three seasons, but no... the Shite are put in it and we have to move to accommodate them.

Let's stuff the bastards on Saturday. I am fed up of all the favouritism the Shite get and let's hope we send their supporters packing on Saturday back to Cornwall, Norway and Ireland.

The cup-tie rule is perfectly reasonable, there’s no point moaning about it just because it's going against us here. If we wanted him, we should have signed him before he played in European competition for Atletico Madrid, not waited till five past deadline.

Look at the difference with having Donovan lined up before the window even opened, he’s able to hit the ground running, not hit his best form three months in. And actually, assuming things go to plan, we will play Atletico. Unless my memory has failed me, we’re drawn against them in the next round.

As for Hitzfeld not being a household name, he is if you pay attention to European football at all.

Oi James, although from Southport, I'm a Blue and I live in Cornwall but I get your point!

Saturday score:
Shite 1, Everton 3 (Saha, Cahill, Pienaar). Scorer for the Shite, who cares?

Jon, obviously some people like yourself are better educated in Cornwall than others. My reference was to the bandwagon jumpers, obviously people in areas that don't have a top-flight club to support, are fee to choose whomevery they wish. I used to go watch Runcorn when Everton weren't playing.

I was in Dubai recently and everyone supported Chelsea or Man Utd, they had never heard of Peter Osgood or Denis Law but they supported Chelsea or Man Utd.
There is a perceived bias to the Sky 4 and has been for many seasons now.

Senderos is not fit. When he is, he will be the best central defender at Goodison Park. Along side a fit Jagielka (if he gets back to how he was), we would have a top class partnership. I’d play Heitinga in central midfield with Arteta and Fellaini.

Ciaran:

18.07 Excluding the UEFA Super Cup, and subject to paragraph 18.18 below, a player may not play UEFA club competition matches for more than one competing club in the course of the same season. A substitute player who is not fielded is entitled to play for another club competing in the same season’s UEFA club competitions, provided that he is registered with the UEFA administration in accordance with the present regulations.

18.17 For all matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2010 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

18.18 One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered provided that the player has not been fielded:
􀀐 in the same competition for another club,
􀀐 for another club that is currently in the same competition.
Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Europa League, his former club must not have played in the UEFA Europa League at any point in the current season.

The fact that Moyes was apparently considering paying £4 million last summer and now has him for free could be seen as shrewd business. I think given time and backing, Senderos could be an exceptional signing.

We have never really ever had a fast centre-back and speed isn’t something that Everton is renowned for. Dave Watson and Alan Stubbs occupied the position for years and years and put in more than their fair share of class performance!

On topic, if Johnny played for the RS they’d find a loop hole I’m sure.
