The Mail Bag

We never played yesterday!

Comments (22)

Last night at 6pm Houston time (midnight back home in UK) I sat down to watch Sky Sports News:

1. Headline news: Man Utd v Milan - Fair enough
2. EPL, Man City draw at Stoke - Eh, what about Everton in Europe?
3. Championship round up - You are kidding me?
4. League One and 2 round-up - what the fuck???
5. Scottish Cup - Have I missed a day in my life or gone back in time?

I sat through the whole of that Sky Sports News — and the freakin idiotic and irritatingly long Proactive and Bosley "hair-do" adverts until 6:27 when, lo and behold, Fellaini has a serious injury - then, oh yes, by the way, Everton just about beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1!!!! Now we're off for a break — Twattin Proactive and piggin Bosley again... aaaaaaaggh!

Yes, I am paranoid about wanting news about Everton! Yes, we are not the greatest of news for the footballing world! But, hang on a minute......

Everton playing in Europe - shouldn't that be considered bigger news ahead of the EPL, Championship, League's One and Two - and the Scottish Cup???

Can anyone explain this type of reporting??? Was there a media block by Everton, or what? Have Sky News hired the BBC MotD planner full time?

The Uefa - now Europa league isnt generally discussed in any detail on sky sports - as sky only show champions league in terms of European Competition - You will only find Europa games on C5 Espn and ITV4 - Apart from ITV1 always shows the final. Once again i raise the question of the suppposed attempts of revamping (rebranding) the uefa into the europa to make it more commercialized as none of the major TV networks apart from ESPN have it.

Simple answer is that if Sky don’t have the rights to something they give it no coverage. They simply promote their own agenda.

Probably the biggest sporting event in the world at the minute is the winter olympics but they have barely got a mention on Sky.

As I said, they promote their own agenda.

It's nothing very original - Sky don’t mention the FA Cup unless it's something particularly big.

They have reporters when the games are on, but as they don’t have any goals for the other comps they gloss over them once the match has ended.

Agree completely that Sky’s sports coverage is heavily bias towards those events it has the rights to cover.

Although, in all fairness, the europa league is a pile of sh*t.

Sky news channel showed all the goals at 11:20 and 12:20 last night immediately after the Utd goals and before the City goals.

I think Sky Sports News is banned from showing certains things which the Sky News Channel is not similar to BBC and ITV news.

I understand we cannot play at home the same night as Liverpool. It would of course be a nightmare for police and city officials.

I agree that one of the two fixtures had to be moved to a different night but why the early start?

What possible reason is there for a tea time kick off? Was it done so Everton didn’t clash with the Champion League games?

Tea Time kick off is really hard.

What we wanted was a big European night with Goodison packed to the rafters. There’s something special about Goodison on those nights.

Instead we got a somewhat empty Goodison with a quiet crowd all tired cause they came straight from work.

No atmosphere at all really and I think the players picked up on that and played rather subdooed just like the crowd.

Europa League and Champions League games can’t be played at the same time (££££ kerching).
I thought we did alright. If it wasn’t for Distin’s howler we’d be comfortable. Mind you we can’t blame him too much, apparently he always has a nap around tea time!

To return to the thread, have you noticed how much coverage cycling is getting all of a sudden as a result of "Team Sky"?

Seamus, Spot on. Witness golf — The Open. They don't cover it because they don't cover it. :-)

They also don't show football prior to their precious Premier League.

Did anyone notice the list of ootball fixtures yesterday on SkySports.com?
It read:
Champions League
EPL
Championship
League One
League Two
Scottish Cup
Europa League

I understand that Sky doesnt have the rights for the Europa League but surely that doesnt mean the Europa League now has to come last in their fixture lists?

If Sky doesn’t have the rights to the Europa league, does that mean they won’t get excited about ’great european liverpool nights’?

I understand Sky cover what they have, but I find it very hard to believe that Liverpool won’t get a mention.

If they don’t, it may be because of the stage of the competition. What if Liverpool or Everton reach the Europa League final? No coverage whatsoever?

Anyway, a nice point of comparison will be Sky’s handling of the Liverpool game. There’s no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Sky is biased, but maybe commercial bias is the issue here due to the competition, not merely the Sky Four involvement.

What about the BBC though? Driving to work listening to Today on Radio 4, Rob Bonnet’s (admittedly brief) sport bulletin had interviews with Beckham, Graham Taylor, Milan v Man U ad nauseum......and then...."and now for our racing selections".

As far as I’m aware the BBC have, or are supposed to have, no bias at all. But not even a mention. The Europa league doesn’t really exist. Between all that and the shunted kick off time Moyes should just tell Uefa to get tae fuck, as they say in Glasgow.

Gerry, the game was shown live on Direct TV in the USA. All the Europa League games are shown live in a batch of channels in the mid-400s.
Theres about 5 channels that show 2 games each live.

I have Direct TV, but if you don’t check out a local football bar that shows live football, they might have it.

Hope that helps.

Yeh the media shit all over us unfortunately.

Was reading an article on BBC website about this new champs league playoffs thing.

The guy went on to say "Its attractive for ambiotous clubs in and around the top 4 like spurs, villa and city"

Very very sad

Seamus is right, the best thing is when the World Cup and the Euros are on and Sky pretend that nothing is happening. That station live in a bubble.

They may as well just call it the ’Sky Premier League’ and be done with it.

As everyone has said, Sky are completely oblivious to any sports event that they cannot show footage of.

1) Get over it...

Remember rule 1) Title, The Golden Rule...Those who have the gold make the rules.

Which leads directly to...

Rule 2) Applies from the smallest scale to those who have ’power ’ right up to the top Bush Iraq etc etc. which states...

Bosley is the worst, imo. How about the guy that says, "This has got to be the best decision I’ve made in my life..." Creepiest man alive, hands down.

Off topic obviously, but, are there any proper football adverts in the UK, from boot companies, Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc? Why is all of their promotion primarily in online video virals when people are obviously viewing matches they can’t see anywhere besides TV. Don’t know if anyone agrees but many of them are really cool. The design standards set by Nike Football especially has made some sweet stuff, especially older Joga Bonito spots. I would love to see those in between news programs or match halftime, why not?

Dick,

"What possible reason is there for a tea time kick off? Was it done so Everton didn’t clash with the Champion League games?"

Yes, UEFA don’t hide this fact they state it openly. Even more annoying is the fact that they’ve spread out the Champions League games over two weeks to make a clash more likely.

Sky Sports News is basically little more than an advert for Sky Sports, watch with that in mind, not expecting top class sports coverage.

The Liverpool game would get more coverage anyway, despite the outrageous media bias, because nothing else will be happening that night.
