Lost in Translation?

Comments (23)

I've just read an interesting article on Bily reflecting on his first season in the Premier League. He reckons its been 'one of the best so far in his career.' He states that he has scored more goals than he previously has and views his time at Everton as a career highlight.

I've been disappointed in him so far. I know it takes time to settle in the Premier League but he seems a total passenger for large periods of the game. I just don't think he works hard enough throughout a game. On the other hand, he does score fairly often and has got good ability.

So... do you think Bily has been a success so far at Goodison? If not, do you think he will ever make it? How much time should he be given?

Without the benefit of Dini's musings, but in response to David's questions -

1. Not a "success", but a good acquisition.

2. He has the potential to be amazing.

3. A few weeks with his feet up in the dacha will help, but the Moyes molding technique will still take a good few months after that.

ps - remember he has Cap'n Pip 'feeding' him much of the time, and still he scores.

pps - like a stuck record here, I will say again how much he reminds me of Duncan McKenzie, whose talent was never really harnessed by anyone (especially G Lee). Our wild card tatar could turn out the same - but I suspect not.

I'd imagine he's talking about this link on Kipper:

I don't think we'll see the best of Bily until next season, but I'm hopeful that he'll prove to be a quality addition to the squad.

Bily says: "For me it has been one of the best seasons of my life. I have scored more goals than before. I have had a long season now, one and a half, and for me it is very impressive. I have enjoyed every minute on the pitch with this club.

It is the second game when we have collected only one point and that is not enough to come top five. We need five more wins and maybe we will still have a chance. Villa is doubly important. We need to win. We need to play at our top level, and I think we will be fine. We need to believe that and I think we can do it because we have got such good players. We now need some days for resting and sitting at home watching TV, then we can start anew preparing for the Aston Villa game. We need to think and believe about European football. I don't even want think about not making it. I am sure we can do it.

I scored a goal but I am not happy because it is still one point. It is not good. It was not a good enough finish to the game. The mistake after scoring the second goal was terrible but this is football, it is life. We were not good enough moving. Maybe this form should be better to get results. We need to score more at Villa."

I think you've always got to take what footballers say with a large helping of salt. How many times have you seen a footballer being interviewed, that goes along the lines of "when I was growing up in the Ukraine, I always wanted to play for Fulham" or some other team he's never heard of, after all they're harldy going to bad mouth the club that's paying paying them all that money.

He's been a disapointment but undoubtedly gifted and has potential. First season I would say rates as a C.

Overall, he's been average.

That is, he has moments where he seems top drawer, he scores goals, his close control is amazing normally, and he can pass. Long, short, no problem.

However, he's slow, so I don't think I've seen him beat anyone for pace. He also works to little, and he's not strong enough yet.

I think a vacation will serve him well. Then a good pre-season, and of course one season of experience, and I expect him to come good. First season, however, I'd say C+

As most have said, we won't see the best of him until next season, and until Moyes and the coaching staff have done their bit during pre-season. He's either bought a dud or he hasn't, and given the amount of money he paid, and the Fellaini experience, it would seem the latter.
Encouraging to hear he is happy here, as I think there was an article earlier in the season where it was suggested he wasn't totally au fait with everything.

Not sure on Bily yet. Scored a couple of big goals, shown some nice moments but has never dominated a game and tends to disappear all too often.

He needs a rest. Next season he'll be as important as Arteta... or Osman, either way.

I think he'll play in the Cahill role and do well. His all round contribution hasn't been great, but technically he's good and he has that awareness to be in the right place at the right time.

He needs time and patience, like Fellaini did. Even this season people were saying Fellaini was a flop, yet he showed when played in a role that suited him that he's got quality. Hopefully Bily will do the same. Give him a chance.

If I was a professional footballer, I'd also brand any season I'd secure a move to Everton as "one of the best so far in my career."

Heaven bless you Thor.

Go along with Brendan, its only a bit of newspaper chat, but he sounds like his heart's in the right place.

Those citing the Big Fella experience seem about right to me. The player - as I said, far far from a disaster this season - needs a lengthy period of adjustment.

He used to tackle back much more than he does now, to the displeasure of PL refs. I suspect he's been told to stop it until he's been 'retrained'.

I'm not to concerened about him.

Bily has shown flashes. He's been inconsistant, certainly, but his good has been excellent.

A mitigating factor for me is that due to the timing of the Russian leagues, he hasn't had an offseason since late 2008 (i think). With regular international commitments, and the inevitable bedding in period coming to a better league & i can live with the fluctuations in performance.

Whilst some never step up (Jo, anyone?), i'm encouraged by the fact that we saw the same inconsistancy, with sprinklings of brilliance from one Marouane Fellaini last season.

I don't think he is a winger. He just doesn't have the speed. I think he would be much better in the middle, whether at an attacking role or a box to box center mid. I don't have confirmation on this but I believe he has even been used as a left back by the Russian national team. I think he has what it takes to be a solid player in this league but not on the wing.

He is a footballer. He's come straight in to the fastest most demanding league in the world, it takes time.

I think he needs beefing up and work on the physical side of his game before we see the best of Bily, Heitinga has that physicality and has settled well but Pienaar, Fellaini and Arteta took a bit of time. Next season will be the time to judge.

I think it's fair to say he needs to give more next season. It's so infuriating when you watch him and he just doesn't look like he wants the ball, especially when he plays out wide, he gives the full back no chance.

Baines and Neville have both struggled when Bily is in front of them. Moyes needs to find his position and stick with it, and instill a bit of discipline into his game.

A gifted player who is tasked with linking up with Phil Neville. For all Phil's qualities playing football is not one of them. His best position would be next to Moyes in the dugout.

Perhaps unfair but Everton have moved on and Phil Neville is exposed as not a good enough attacking full-back to give Bily a chance. We need another Baines.

Got to say Bily excited me loads when he joined... but his pedestrian pace has me scratching my head.... and his all of a sudden forgetting how to cross after we called him the next Sheedy i nthe beginning...

saying that... I'm in the category of those that now believe he should be played centrally behind the striker... then he doesn't have to track back as much and with his sublime shooting ability (pity he missed that one this weekend)... he could be very successful.

Bily has talent and a can do a job for Everton although he wouldn't be the first player to under achieve in his first season just look at Mophead? Many European players take time to adjust to the rigours of the Prem, which is arguably the toughest in the world. I look forward to seeing more of Bily next season.
