The Mail Bag
Our other good youngster

I have just read the Rodwell article on one previous mailbad thread about the prospect of selling him. Does anyone remember we have another good prospect in Dan Gosling? Is it just me or does no one remember this? Because he's been linked with that Utd too.
Just want everyone's thoughts on him really; does he have potential as good as Rodwell? I think not, and it hasn't helped with the injury. But he is gonna be a fantastic player, I think a future shoo-in for the first team here.
Another thought, where does everyone see him playing in his prime? It's a strange one, because Moyes puts him on the wing. I can't see him staying there because I don't think his strong points match the wing position.
I think he can be a future box-to-box midfielder. He is fit, he's decent at passing and tacklng, and, more importantly (the strong point of his game in my opinion), he does have a knack for goals. I know he hasn't scored many, but every time he plays, you always hear him associated with a chance — always in the right areas — and I believe that is unique in him.
Just thought I'd like to give some fan attention to our Derby scoring hero!!!

I do think he's got the qualities to make a decent right back though, a lot of top full backs are players who convert from playing further forward and learn defending late on, Ashley Cole, Dani Alves and Patrice Evra some obvious examples, although he lacks the pace of any of those.
Rodwell has the potential to be a star. A future Everton and England Captain. Gosling looks pretty useful and could develop into a decent squad player but he's not in Rodwell's class.
In terms of potential, Rodwell is a Rooney while Gosling might be an Osman.
A tidy little player who might make a regular first teamer when he drops down to the level he belongs in.
I have it on good authority (which I know doesn't mean a huge amount as things change), that Rodwell won't be going anywhere this summer. Why would we sell a bit-part player, when next season he'll play much more regulary and his value will double? ccording to people close to him and his family, he is genuinly happy at Everton and with Moyes.
The difference being with this and the Rooney transfer is that no contractual mishaps are occurring with scouts and agents, Stretford and Dalglish (spit), fall outs with management, and other troubles with local gangsters wanting a piece of the action.
Gosling is nowhere near Rodwell, to answer your question.
I'm not insulting Gosling by saying he's another Osman.
I think Osman is a great player and a very useful member of the squad.
In fact Gosling will do well to get near Osman's Everton career.
Honestly mate, that was not supposed to be a response of insult, I do agree with you.
I think a handy versatile squad player would do, and would be a coup considering we only bought him for a million.
To change the subject completely, I've just watched an interview with the Yak on SkySports and he was asked about the comments of Phil Neville and the fact that he says we don't need to sign anyone pre-season. Yakubu just laughed and said that he's probably just worried about his place in the team if we do sign someone. Classic!
Will more than likely stay at EFC for the rest of his career.
Will frustrate at times, but every now and again give us great memories.
Gosling is a Premier League standard prospect; Osman is a good comparison. Rodwell can either be as good as they get, or become a good player rather than great, much like Tom Huddlestone.
Rodwell on the other hand is a pure class act and has so much potential.
OK, he scored a few key goals against the top teams in the last calendar year... but, to be fair, I could've put those away.
Awful player.
Hey James, if you could score the goal he put away to knock the RS out of the Carling Cup, then you've missed your vocation.
I would say they have both contributed an equal amount. Both have impressed me in some games and dissapointed in others. Players develop at different rates.
Let's not forget Osman didn't break into the first team till he was 22, Lampard was still considered quite average and didn't become a regular for England untill his mid-20s. Gosling is only 20 and has plenty of time. I think he will overtake Osman in the pecking order over the next couple of seasons and, depending how well the rest of the squad develops, I would say he has a decent chance of becoming a first team player.
I think Rodwell looks a class above Gosling and the fact he is two years younger shows that the gulf could be even bigger than it is already.
Let's not make too many comparisons between Rodwell and Rooney. Rooney is a quality player that a club like us may produce once every 50 years. Rodwell still has a way to go yet to be considered in the same bracket — a full international call up still seems a way off too!

Hope he surprises me, but I can only see it happening if the surgeon swaps his legs for someone else's.
