The Mail Bag

Our other good youngster

Comments (32)

I have just read the Rodwell article on one previous mailbad thread about the prospect of selling him. Does anyone remember we have another good prospect in Dan Gosling? Is it just me or does no one remember this? Because he's been linked with that Utd too.

Just want everyone's thoughts on him really; does he have potential as good as Rodwell? I think not, and it hasn't helped with the injury. But he is gonna be a fantastic player, I think a future shoo-in for the first team here.

Another thought, where does everyone see him playing in his prime? It's a strange one, because Moyes puts him on the wing. I can't see him staying there because I don't think his strong points match the wing position.

I think he can be a future box-to-box midfielder. He is fit, he's decent at passing and tacklng, and, more importantly (the strong point of his game in my opinion), he does have a knack for goals. I know he hasn't scored many, but every time he plays, you always hear him associated with a chance — always in the right areas — and I believe that is unique in him. Just thought I'd like to give some fan attention to our Derby scoring hero!!!

I fear his (albeit crucial) cameos against Man U and the Shite will prove to be the highlights of his career. Not in the same league as Rodwell in terms of potential.

Hope he surprises me, but I can only see it happening if the surgeon swaps his legs for someone else's.

To be honest, I don't really rate him as of yet... I doubt the rumours linking him to Man Utd are true.

I think he'd do well as a central midfielder. Unfortunately, I don't think he'll get the chance to play that position here...

Agree with 1 & 2, I just don't see the potential in him, certainly not to the level of Rodwell, although that's not to write him off totally, just not expect him to be world class.

I do think he's got the qualities to make a decent right back though, a lot of top full backs are players who convert from playing further forward and learn defending late on, Ashley Cole, Dani Alves and Patrice Evra some obvious examples, although he lacks the pace of any of those.

Let's be honest, Dan Gosling is a completely different prospect to Jack Rodwell.

Rodwell has the potential to be a star. A future Everton and England Captain. Gosling looks pretty useful and could develop into a decent squad player but he's not in Rodwell's class.

In terms of potential, Rodwell is a Rooney while Gosling might be an Osman.

Do Glazier Utd have enough money to bid for Rodwell??? I dont' think they do, so I hope along with Pienaar they sign their new contracts, preferably before the World Cup starts.

Linked to Man U? Not by Man U he wasn't.

A tidy little player who might make a regular first teamer when he drops down to the level he belongs in.

To be fair Dick, I think you're spot on, a handy squad player like Osman. If that is the case, I wouldn't complain too much.

I dont think he is much cop, another Billy Kenny, Williamson, Steven Hughes etc... touted with loads of potential but not really up to it. Will probably do ok in the Championship.

Why is it that even us Evertonians endlessly speculate about our young players going? Surely we add fuel to the fire.

I have it on good authority (which I know doesn't mean a huge amount as things change), that Rodwell won't be going anywhere this summer. Why would we sell a bit-part player, when next season he'll play much more regulary and his value will double? ccording to people close to him and his family, he is genuinly happy at Everton and with Moyes.

The difference being with this and the Rooney transfer is that no contractual mishaps are occurring with scouts and agents, Stretford and Dalglish (spit), fall outs with management, and other troubles with local gangsters wanting a piece of the action.

Gosling is nowhere near Rodwell, to answer your question.

This was not supposed to be speculation Charlie, I just wanted people's opinions on him, it's interesting, as he is hardly mentioned amidst the constant speculation with Rodwell.

I think he is very much in the mould of Stephen Hughes, Cadamateri, Billy Kenny, Barlow, Williamson, Branch etc... a lot of promise but turn out to be pretty poor. He would be more at home in the Championship.

I'm not insulting Gosling by saying he's another Osman.

I think Osman is a great player and a very useful member of the squad.

In fact Gosling will do well to get near Osman's Everton career.

Honestly mate, that was not supposed to be a response of insult, I do agree with you.

I think a handy versatile squad player would do, and would be a coup considering we only bought him for a million.

I like Gosling. I think he'll mature into a cracking player in the Cahill mould. Like its been said before on this thread, he can tackle and score goals and is a honest, hard working lad. He also scored one of my favourite goals of all time so he'll do for me.

To change the subject completely, I've just watched an interview with the Yak on SkySports and he was asked about the comments of Phil Neville and the fact that he says we don't need to sign anyone pre-season. Yakubu just laughed and said that he's probably just worried about his place in the team if we do sign someone. Classic!

He's a Championship player. Don't be fooled by his goals against Liverpool and Utd but look at his overall performances in the 1st team.... Not in the same league as Rodwell.

On scoring his goal after coming on against Man City at Goodison last season, he very much reminded me of a younger version of Frank Lampard Jr. So, I reckon he'll grow into an attacking central midfielder.

After watching the Man U v Bayern Munich game last night it is blatantly obvious what Man U need and it is't Jack Rodwell or Dan Gosling for that matter. As soon as they lose Rooney they fall to bits in terms of scoring goals. Look at where their goals have come from this season; Rooney has scored over 30 then they have had 11 own goals to help them out and the most useless striker in the premier with the exception of Kung Fu Panda Supersize Mido, Berbatov has chipped in with a measly 12. They desperately need a 20 a season striker to help out and cover if and when Rooney isn't playing, the likes of Benzema would be a more appropriate target.

I personally think Gosling is garbage and a terrible player. He has no vision and never looks up. No pace either I'm struggling to get excited over his future prospect. I doubt he will ever be a starter here.

Dan Gosling = Leon Osman

Will more than likely stay at EFC for the rest of his career.
Will frustrate at times, but every now and again give us great memories.

No offence, Sean Patton, but I heard that about John Paul Kissock to name one of about 50 "promising" youth players that now ply their trade in and around the Blue Square North level.

Gosling is a Premier League standard prospect; Osman is a good comparison. Rodwell can either be as good as they get, or become a good player rather than great, much like Tom Huddlestone.

Sadly, I don't think Gosling is good enough for us despite having an eye for goal.

Rodwell on the other hand is a pure class act and has so much potential.

It's a funny old game innit? I think Gosling is easily one of the WORST players ever to wear an Everton shirt.

OK, he scored a few key goals against the top teams in the last calendar year... but, to be fair, I could've put those away.

Awful player.

Hey James, if you could score the goal he put away to knock the RS out of the Carling Cup, then you've missed your vocation.

I don't see how people can go from one extreme to the other regarding Gosling and Rodwell. One is considered potential world class by many and the other Championship standard. From what I have seen from each I wouldn't say they are worlds apart, although Rodwell is 2 years younger.

I would say they have both contributed an equal amount. Both have impressed me in some games and dissapointed in others. Players develop at different rates.

Let's not forget Osman didn't break into the first team till he was 22, Lampard was still considered quite average and didn't become a regular for England untill his mid-20s. Gosling is only 20 and has plenty of time. I think he will overtake Osman in the pecking order over the next couple of seasons and, depending how well the rest of the squad develops, I would say he has a decent chance of becoming a first team player.

Ian Tunstead, Gosling may take over from Osman in the next few years but probably on the bench. With a fully fit midfield — Arteta, Cahill, Fellaini, Heitinga, Pienaar & Rodwell — I can't see Ossie getting too many starts.

I think Rodwell looks a class above Gosling and the fact he is two years younger shows that the gulf could be even bigger than it is already.

Let's not make too many comparisons between Rodwell and Rooney. Rooney is a quality player that a club like us may produce once every 50 years. Rodwell still has a way to go yet to be considered in the same bracket — a full international call up still seems a way off too!

An Ajax supporting Dutch colleague of mine says that Bryan Ruiz would be a great acquisition for the Blues, he is one of the reasons Steve McLaren's FC Twente are top of the Dutch Erodivisie and has a great goalscoring record. Has anyone seen him and think he would do well in the UK?
