Match of the Day

Comments (25)

After reading the BBC match report describing some of our play yesterday as mirroring Barcelona (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8619900.stm)

"Rovers went into the match having kept three clean sheets in their last three games but they were stunned by Everton's blistering opening which saw them keep possession in a manner akin to Barcelona."

I was looking forward to watching Match of the Day.

However,

  • Did MotD show anything of our passing game?....no.
  • Did they comment about us only losing 2 games in the last 21?....no.
  • Did they comment that our form is only bettered by Chelsea and Man Utd during this time?....no.
  • Did they compare Tottenhams win against Arsenal and Chelsea to ours against Man Utd and Chelsea in the same week?....no.
  • Did they even talk about the match once it had finished?....nope
It was straight onto Stoke v Bolton — which, for the record, they spent a few minutes talking about afterwards. They even spent more time talking about Burnley v Sunderland! I'm literally completely dismayed with MOTD. Do they ever give us the credit we deserve!?!

Fingers crossed Goals on Sunday show a bit more of our passing game and also talk a bit about how good of a run we are on. All this still without ever having our first choice 11 on the pitch for 1 game this season!

Devil's Advocate here. Our match yesterday was, for the neutrals, an end-of-season affair between teams placed 8th and 11th.

With many of the other matches featuring the Championship, European qualification and relegation battles, it's hardly surprising that the BBC editors decided that they didn't have enough time in the show to discuss what was, in all probability, a meaningless fixture and an expected result.

Are we not still in the race for a european place? We were in a similar position behind Villa last season and a strong finish saw us haul them in and finish ahead. Let's keep doing what we are doing and wait for Villa to stuff it up again, then MotD might actually pay some attention to us!!!

Accomplishment is found in your actions, not by how many people know or talk about them after.

Still I'm surprised we were 4th considering the game before was a 0-0 between Brum and Hull.

Do you really care though what those shirt and slacks bunch really say or not say about us?

Ciarán, I agree-sort of, but that doesn't stop me hating the smug fuckers, and being angry that Everton is usually ignored. MOTD is past its sell-by date, if someone did an analysis of time spent talking, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 35/40% of the programme. Football First on Sky is, sad to say, far superior and I'm surprised that BBC haven't copied it

"Are we not still in the race for a European place?"

Where we ever percieved to be by others? I have been buying the 442 magazine's season preview for as long as I can remember. Not once have they predicted we will finish in a European place. Yet each year Spurs are. Even after fighting relegation the year before and finnishing 11th, they are down at 25/1 to win the Premier League.

Everton, who finnished 5th, and are the only team outside of the 'Sky 4' that have finnished in a top four space are down as 250/1. It's the same every year. I don't know why I bother buying it. I don't know why I bother with MoTD either.

I was pissed off with MotD, expecting extended highlights of a 5-goal, very entertaining game. Surely entertainment value alone would give this match precedence over others? And the complete lack of analysis, comment etc after the game, and the way Lineker dismissed Cahill's goal as being the first with his feet in his last 10 or whatever, has given me more reason to believe that, for whatever reason, they just don't like Everton!

What's attractive to a neutral about a club who's ambitions lay at 8th or 7th in the league playing an end of season game against Blackburn?

Charles - That would be the five goals, and the fact that the BBC compaired our passing akin to Barcelona's. If I was a neutral, I would want to see extended highlights of that.

I would also like to see a Striker (Lineker/Shearer) discussing with a defender (Hansen) the 5 goals. 3-2's aren't common and it would have been good to have heard their take on it. Especially with Lineker's link to Everton and Shearer's link to Blackburn.

Oh and the point about the more 'important' games is really, well, the point here isn't it? Our game didn't mean as much as the previous 0-0 game which has relevance for Hull who are quite likely to be relegated.

I can really identify with the OP on this one. Having just entered my 6th decade of watching Everton, for much of my life I have eagerly awaited MotD — especially when I was unable to make it to the match. In fact, I was one of those saddos who would walk out of shops on a Saturday afternoon with my fingers in my ears, loudly la-la-la-ing so as not to hear the final scores before the show came on that night. Woe betide anyone who spoiled my MotD experience by mentioning how we did. It was the next best (admittedly poor substitute) thing to the excitement of being there and not knowing what would happen.

I've also never been able to afford Sky, and have only recently been initiated into the 'joys' of the live stream. For many of us, I'm guessing MotD is a big part of the weekend footie experience. And how we are portrayed is a fair measure of our standing in the eyes of the media — and we all surely long for that to improve, especially when the performances clearly merit it.

I've even softened over the years (albeit marginally) to Lawro — who seemed to be the only one of the pundits who didn't find complimenting us sticking in his throat.

Even in these post-sky, post-www days, MotD is an institution for footie fans — particularly those of us of 'a certain age'. It's not a matter of mutual exclusivity that we can be overjoyed at a victory and majorly pissed off at not getting the props (big up the GP massive) we deserve on what is, admittedly, auntie's anachronistic sporting flagship.

I think we are being over sensitive here. The media, both broadcast and print, has been, with the exception of Alan Green, pretty kind to Everton and David Moyes. When Walter Smith was manager, he was consistently praised, rightly in my view, for keeping Everton afloat with little to spend.

I think many of us see Everton as still being a huge club and feel patronized if praise is less than fulsome. Yesterday's game counted for little other than to the supporters of the clubs involved. Most times when we have been last on MotD, it has been deserved.

The match highlights - 20 mins - are usually posted on ETV at midnight after the game. Same cameras as the rest, but local commentary. On a good day like yester's it would be well worth staying up.

£40 a year - much less than a pint of lager a fortnight, or half a lager a week in old money.

ps ETV - if the cheque doesn't arrive pronto, I am going to have to stop doing this.

Match of the Day is shite. Especially hate it when they 'go over to Maniche' and the guy's stood in some random, edgy pose on top of a fucking ladder or something for no logical reason. MotD2 is even worse, with that arse-faced Adrian Chiles painfully trying to inject humour into the programme.

Personally, I couldn't care less about MotD yet I agree with those who moan about its coverage of Everton. I do so only because football is is in the entertainment business and as such thrives on any kind of publicity. Big business pays a fortune to have its brand name shown in millions of households.

Ergo, those brands become household names with huge market opportunities for their wares.

I have heared experts in advertising say that the best kind of publicity is when the brand name appears if only briefly as part of a scheduled news break.

I can see how and why the SKY 4 have become media darlings but that won't always be the case. Eventually their star will wane while those of others will shine brighter. I believe that process has already started.

Everton's hopes of being one of those new bright lights will hinge not only on how they play with a ball but also on how they play the publicity angle.
As in the on-field game, you can only strut your stuff when you have possession of the ball. That is why we should be gearing up that side of our business game.

I hope that makes some kind of sense because I think I am off track with it.

Hardly ever watch it and get annoyed regularly when I do. Was up early on Sunday morning and put it on, thinking, a 3-2 game with a last minute winner, must be in with a shout of extended highlights.

I switched off after the 3rd game came on and we still never got a mention. But, as they say, if you don't like it, don't watch it. If enough viewers do this, they'll soon listen and it will be too late because all games will be available on YouTube.com in 1080p High Definition by 10pm on the same Saturday night (eventually) with advertisers bidding for the ad slots to appear.

No Lorro, no football in the community, no bullshit talk of Liverpool being worth £800m. But I must admit I miss the: di di der di di di, di dir, di, ri di der; di di der di di di, di dir, di, ri di der;di di der di di di, di dir, di, ri di der; de der de de de, de der, de, ri di der...di di di di, di der ri di di di di di di di der ri di di. Ciaran - I for one do care.

Media fragmentation has clearly reduced MotD's clout, and will continue to do so, but it still commands a pretty large slice of attention where the football community is concerned.

To many Evertonians who couldnt go to the match, it's their first stop to see highlights of our match and it's also a shop window for the club. Many who go to the match will even be walking out thinking "I'll be watching MotD tonight..." etc.

Whether it be paranoia or not, there is a widespread belief that for whatever reason we are rarely put on in the "right place" on MotD, or unduly relegated to last on the show far too often. I used to think supporters of all clubs outside of the Sky 4 must think this but it is definitely something that Evertonians have picked up on — I have just started working with a West Ham fan for instance who is aware that this "thing" we have with MotD.

To finally try to put the whole thing to bed, a couple of seasons ago I tried to put it to the test a little more scientifially.

MotD say they put teams in order of league position and excitement / goals in the game. Each Saturday, based on that criteria, I tried to predict the whole schedule of MotD and rarely got the list wrong from top to bottom — bar the fact that we were consistently 1, 2 or more places lower than I expected and I can honestly say never higher than my prediction. All other clubs were generally on where you'd expect. I can also honestly say I did it as objectively as I possibly could, it would pointless doing it otherwise. (OK — I know you're thinking it's pointless doing it anyway but humour me.... )

So, in answer to your question, I care and there are plenty of others who do too because they feel that for whatever reason the BBC aren't giving us a fair crack of the whip. It also pisses me right off staying up till midnight to catch 20 seconds highlights of our match — having sat through every other game — when the rest of the country have watched the Sky 4 and are now tightly tucked up in bed.

You might call me a sad bastard, and perhaps rightly so, but it does my bloody head in.

Not sad at all Ciaran, the man likes to watch his team and after getting fed up has spend the whole season gathering informational data to show that there is a bias agai.....you know what?, never mind.

One way to guarrantee that we get lots of minutes is to get beat, they always like to show that.
