The Importance of Arteta!

Comments (15)

Following on from a recent article laying out our improved form since late December I thought I would look at the games since Arteta came back against Chelsea. I won’t list every result but it does make interesting reading, I think!

We have averaged 2.0 points a game — maintained for a full season, that would give us a points tally of 76 but even better if you only use the games Arteta has played in (he missed 3 games, Wolves, West Ham & Villa) it is an average of 2.4 points per game, or 90 points for the season.

I know this is pure speculation but at the end of the day that’s what we do as fans, look for things that might give us optimism for the future.

You dont even have to look at the stats, just cast your mind back to how we were playing when he was at his best last season, and how we played without him.

Only Fellaini looked capable, when finally played in his proper position, of setting a temp like Arteta does, a full season with both could be really special.

If we have Jags and Jonny settled at the back with Arteta and Felli in front I can't see us losing to many teams.

That core of the team could match any team in the world. I'm not jokin.

It's just a shame we probably wont have another crack at the Europa next season (unless Villa and red shite fail to win any of their 3 remaining games which is unlikely). A fully fit Arteta, Fellaini, Jagielka - with Heitinga available and a fit Yakubu - newly re-signed Pienaar and any incomings, it would of been a real chance. Put it this way: Fulham definitely ain't better than us and neither are the red shite, especially without that female striker.

3 games on the spin ended up as draws in his absence. Previous to that he scored a fantastic winner against City and then he returns against Blackburn to pull the strings and give us the creative edge back.

Quite simply the man is a magician and the single most crucial cog in what we hope becomes an Everton machine.

For all we know some other club will come calling this summer with megabucks and he'll behave like a child looking his transfer but he really does strike me as a rare modern footballer who has settled at his club, settled into a new environment, settled for his salary (which undoubtedly could be much bigger elsewhere) and is determined to help Everton back into the big time.

You said it, Ian, and with Donovan signed up or a RW who's similar with pace to balance out the team and give us a threat down the right as well as what we've got down the left, it could be a very special season!.

Being out of Europe could be a blessing in disguise, fewer games, no travelling around europe every fortnight or when ever and less risk off picking up injuries and if we can get are business done early this summer (asking a lot I know when you haven't got a pot to piss in basically!).

Get everyone fit and settled in and a good start to the season then I think we'll be right up there with the rest challenging for the top four maybe, top six definitely!.

The man is pure class and everything he touches turns to gold. If only he could stay fit for an entire season. Mind you Fellaini Heitinger and Rodwell arn't too bad for back ups. I just hope Piennar renews his contract. The squad has massive potential. It will be very interesting next season if we keep it together and add 1 or 2 others.

Jonathan Field:

Spot on mate. A truly mouthwatering quartet of players. Fellaini was big money no doubt but the others cost buttons in comparison to how much we would be expecting to recoup for them now.

My only worry is how often we'll see them together because I constantly live in fear now that big injuries are just around the corner for us just waiting to halt our progress.

It is exciting the possibility of seeing Arteta doing his usual stuff alongside a Fellaini picking up where he left off! Its a midfield that covers what anyone would want.

I am excited about next season! Europe would be great as I don't think it has affected our squad to much and it seems most of the lads prefer to be playing these extra games than training or having the day off. I know I would.

I can only agree with what people have said, a truly wonderful player and I'm staggered nobody has tried to prise him away. I have a feeling they know what the price would be. If I was Citeh, compared with the shite they've bought, Arteta must be £40-50m worth to them rather than £20M?

I also agree that not being in Europe next year could allow this team to blossom. If it goes well I can't see a limit for them, especially if our home grown players develop apace. I'd like to include Osman in my glowing picture too, he has also grown into a fine player.

Bloody amazing on Ssaturday, even Hibbert and Pip looked class.

I'd like to say that we won't have a summer of disconnent this year but we probably will, fending off the vultures and trying to snap up a few bargains with no money to do so.

I'd make an arguement that Arteta is the best player in world football who can't get in his respective national team, which is probabaly due to the fact his national team has one of the most outstanding midfields in world football. Ever.

Anyway I can't wait to see the big Fella skillfully winning the ball in midfield and passing it to Mikel to pull the strings. To have Jags & Jonny behind them with Jags winning the ball and passing it to Jonny to pull the strings from the back. Wonderful. The team is taking on dimentions I never knew existed. If all goes according to plan and provided we keep everyone and add pace down the right and a player that can "hit them" from 20yards + (all top teams have one), then bring it fucking on !!

Problem is we are Everton not Man U and we haven't the squad to facilitate any interference to this dream team. To add depth we must sell meaning we are more likely to sell a great player than buy a great player.
What we need are more Arteta's.

First. Agree about our players' talent. We're locked and loaded (Please, Donovan come back).

Second. After reading this string, had to double-check I was still in ToffeeWeb. A 13 part ToffeWeb discussion on our players with only the tiniest, vague hint of negativity? Has to be one of the most impressive things about this season for me.

ToffeeWeb fanatics upbeat. I love it! We have every good reason to feel that way. Everyone healthy (fingers crossed) next season, look out EPL. The players feel it too. So does Moyes. You can tell.

Player of the season for me. Also the best Everton player we have had in years!
