Gung-ho Everton bring Spurs back to earth

 42 Comments: First  |  Last

?Gung-ho Everton bring Spurs back to earth: Everton 2 - 1 Tottenham Hostpur. 5 Jan 2011."

Wow... how I would love that to be repeated this week; alas, I fear that that spirit has long since left us and now all we expect is the same old boring one-dimensional Moyes dross.

To say most Blues are bored with the non-existent style of play would be an understatement only paralleled by our mistrust and dislike for Bullshit Bill, yet, only 12 months ago, our once adventurous manager had the gumption (balls) to go hell for leather.

Why has he changed so much?

So we lost Pienaar just after to ?'Appy 'Arry?, but for God?s sake we lost a few players, maybe our creative ones... now we seem to have lost our will to live, our pride as well (not the fans, the team).

Surely Moyes can see that he has become a tactical clown? Everyone on the matchday threads knows who, when and where the substitutions will be. If it?s that obvious to us, then any opposition manager must be wetting himself at the ease with which he can plot a style to beat us.

I guess for many of us the only thing we have left is hope, but we can all see that that is in such short supply. Personally I don?t want to go down whimpering like a bitch; I would rather go down fighting as did Blackpool last year.

At least they still have their pride. We have even managed to lose that this season. We will go down if we carry on... maybe not this season but maybe next ? and just how dire will the performances get before the media applaud our demise?

I remember the game you mention well Dean. We started the game with TWO... yes TWO strikers on the pitch and we looked bloody impressive for large parts of the game.

I remember thinking to myself that this could be the turning point in our managers thinking. I thought surely that this performance would hit home to Moyes that there really is a better way of playing (at home at the very least) than one man up top.

Fast forward one month - away trip to Bolton... attacking duo of Cahill and Anichebe... one of the worst performances I'd seen in a long time from any Blues side... and it hit home that the Spurs game really was a false dawn.

Skip forward a year, and half a season of some of the most boring, one dimensional, negative, one up front, bag of shite performances I've ever had the misfortune to witness - and it is clear to me that our manager simply hasn't got it in him to change his style.

Sadly that game last January is now just a fond and distant memory, and sadly, I won't be holding my breath for many more nights like that while our Davey is in charge.

Sam - we have sold all our assets and most of our best players. If nothing is done we will have to sell more if anyone will buy them. With no reasonable players relegation is a certainty. So why not try to play some attractive entertaining football and actually try to attack teams - give us some reason to watch our beloved team. So dont be so afraid - lets play some attacking football and at least put some pride back in this wonderful club.

Sam, I do not think we will go down this year, but it is as clear as day, (well to most people at least), continue to asset strip without investment in the team will lead to an inadequate crop of players = relegation. My personal view is that it will have nothing to do with pride/fight/honour - just a factually sad reality that the players are not good enough.

If not next season, it will be the season after.

Or...things could change of course...sorry forgot...you are not so sure you want that.

Well unless there'sa miraculous healing of some injuries there's going to be two up top tomorrow night as well. Beckford was great in that game against Spurs running the lines allowing Saha the space to drop off and shoot from distance. How we could do with Beckford's pace and 10 goals a season now.

Yes, we know Moyes is the one to blame for selling Yakubu,Beckford and Arteta.
Perhaps he could have waited until january, and then gotten more money for Beckford and Arteta and then kept Yakubu.

Now Moyyes must dig himself out of his own grave, not an easy task, and made worse by his own doing.

We will lose big against Spurs with Neville as right back, haha, he will be crushed by Bale.
The sad truth.

Surely Moyes can see that he has become a tactical clown? - How's that then? Just because you don't agree with his tactics?

The squad dictates the tactics and it, like the rest of Everton FC Ltd has been asset stripped.

Moyes tactics are too defensive, we can all agree on that but I don't blame him for being cautious when there is absolutely no creativity left in the team apart from our left back.

They are all to blame, Moyes, the players and the board but as usual it's just Moyes's fault etc etc

"he will be crushed by Bale" - Bale is overated and he didn't ahow too much the last two times against Neville.

He would destroy Coleman though, if he played at right back.

I really fear for us in this one.

No team has really gone gung-ho for us this term and with our confidence being lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rutt i can't take any positives as yet from my thoughts about the game.

But. Football is a funny old game so here's hoping.

I think it's tailor made for Moyes. Just like citteh & the arse he can park the bus and give it the plucky underdog bit, and provided that we don't concede early, we will probably get beat 2-0, with the first goal coming in the 70-75 minute, still a defeat, but not a spanking-that's all we can hope for, this is what's it's like to be an evertonian in 2012

To be fair most managers don't make subs before 60 minutes and many subs come on for the last 5. Its more a Moyes fault that they'll be entirely inefectual in terms of changing the game, unless its a live-wire like Drenthe.

At some point, Moyes knows things have to change. Spurs the season before I think when he was bood for bringing on a defender for a defender was a turning point... I think.

However, two up front last game and the 4-5-1 morphing into a 4-2-3-1 in previous games does see slight change in happening but its the need for pass and move football which at the moment is pass and... track back.

Tony J,
or to look at it with a half full attitude, Coleman will keep Bale and co pinned back and nervous, as he did in the past!
Personally, whilst not overly optimistic, I dont think we will get hammered like most seem to think. Van de Vaart is the danger man - If we nullify him we'll do ok.
Would be happier if Jags was playing though!

Spurs have progressed as a footballing side, where we have gone backwards. They WILL go for the throat and have a lot more other than VDV ? Bale, Pavlachenko, Defoe to name but three and I really can't see us getting anything out of the game.

Before anyone calls me a defeatist just look at our last 4 games and ask yourself this: Will Moyes change his tactics? Will he start with Saha? Will he play Neville in the middle? (pray to god he doesn't) and will he play Osman out wide where he is useless?

All of the above have to my mind unbalanced the team and gives us no creativity. You need to be creative to get past Spurs as they are so well drilled in what they do, they are awesome coming forward and if we invite them on and they get the bit between their teeth it could be a very uncomfortable night.... But here's hoping.

It makes me really depressed to read a post like Tony williams`s #079.

I`m not sorry he posted it, but to think he even had to post it.

Kenwright will be here as long as we have fans who think the manager is to blame for selling players.

Do you know what ? I want to win this game more than any game I can ever remember, not for the three points, but to hear what all the white flag wavers have to say afterwards.

Now I`m off to do some research, I`m sure SOMEBODY has a better record at WHL than Moyes over the past five seasons . .might take me a while to find him though

David Moyes says it is unlikely he'll have any injured players back for Spurs. Jags, Cahill, Rodwell, Osman, Hibbo, Coleman, Barkley all out. Ooh doesnt sound good at all. Huge effort will be needed by the remaining 11/14 to even get a point. Would like to see an interchanging midfield of Donavan, Gueye, Fellaini and Billy again though with Saha and Vellios up top. Attack them like they attack everyone else. Wont be though we will have a midfield of Neville,Fellaini,Duffy and another CB to contain Spurs.

Moyes will get his 150th win, if we win! Which to be fair to him despite his haters (on this site in particular) would be a great achievement. David Moyes is one short of his 150th Premier League victory as Everton manager. He will become the fourth manager to reach this milestone in the division after Sir Alex Ferguson (486), Arsene Wenger (337) and Harry Redknapp (220).

And if Spurs concede it will be their 1,000th goal conceded in Prem. I'm going 1-0 us.

What a great night.

I had travelled back from Texas to visit my elderly mother, who now lives in Dorset near my brother.

He and I drove up that day and went to the game with a friend of mine and a friend of his, who had got us nice tickets in the Park End.

Spurs were playing leading up to the game, and we were pretty awful from what I had seen on TV. I was hopeful, as ever, but a little cautious about what to expect. The boys got the lady rocking and it was a great night all around, complete with a curry on Bold Street after the game.

I have been to three games since 1998 when I left the UK, and we've won them all. When I saw the date of the fixture, almost exactly a year on, I really wanted to come home again and hope for a repeat of last year ... sadly I won't be able to make it this year.

Still, I think we can beat them, I always do, and those who can make it need to get the old lady rocking the way we know she can.

Ah, for the everlasting smell of pies, alehouses and horses ...

It is obvious from the tone of the comments that we are concerned about the rest of the season ? and rightly so.

What concerns me more is the apparent apathy of the board regarding our situation, probably believing that Moyes has kept the ship afloat down the years and will do so again. Communication between the club and supporters is at an all-time low and was summed up with the degrading spectacle of Kenwright and a group of Evertonians trading verbals through the railings between Goodison Road and the Directors Car Park last Saturday.

Two away games now, followed by a massive game against Blackburn by the end of January; February looks kind of difficult with City, Chelsea plus Liverpool and even with blind faith I cannot see many points coming our way in this period.

There is an old football adage about a team who are in a relegation battle but don't actually know it; Bill and his board should be told about this...

Tony (080), on what evidence would Bale 'destroy' Coleman, were he fit and played at right back?

I seem to remember that Coleman did precisely that to Spurs last time he played in his rightful position...

Once again, where does this ludicrous assumption that Coleman cannot play right back come from?

Give the lad a run of games there - and then draw a conclusion.

This constant heresay and citing odd incidents at Blackpool are judgement by quite irrelevant criteria.

Academic I admit, in light of tomorrow's injury situation, but such bold, unsubstantiated statements are as inaccurate as suggesting Saha couldn't play there (hmmmm, not the best comparison, but you know what I mean...).

There's no way of knowing until he gets a try - and not just for 20 minutes, but for 20 games.

Spurs have to win. That's a huge amount of pressure on them and they've not been at their best lately. We can't go and defend with the players available, we'd get mullered.

The midfield is where we'll win it, Fellaini and Bily (who else have we got?). Landon to correct that miss.

Moyes has a decent record down there, plus Spurs have been chasing the top two and are now within reach. Will 'arry's lot bottle it?

I used to think Moyes was wonderful, but this season he continues to prove that £65k a week (ffs) can make you feel hard done by. My heart does not blead for him, I do not feel sorry for his plight. I feel sorry for the fans because they are paying the price, probably twice!!!

Dave,

I'd love to win this more than most too. Moyes has just given Spurs a ringing endorsement and clearly thinks they belong where they are.

For us to go and beat them we would have to play far better than we have done so far and we would need to go into it with a plan to win, not to draw.

I used to really, really think Moyes was good enough to build something special, now I don't. I still respect him as a person and I'd still like him to be the person who brings the good times back. He won't be, but a win tomorrow would give me a tiny glimmer of hope he might cheer up a bit and get back to who he used to be.

I think it's all a bit past that now though.
