Season 2011-12

Shane Duffy

In amidst the terrible showing against Blackburn yesterday, one positive light was Shane Duffy. You would think this kid would be overawed from playing in the EPL, but far from it; he was marvellous.

Winning headers, good marking and tackling, almost scoring himself even. His best moment I thought was heading the ball back to Tim Howard, when how many players were around him. How was cool that for a kid!

I really think he is a great propsect and hope we do not spend the little money we have on a centre back, when Distin should be back soon. We desperately need a striker and some creativity in midfield!

Kudos to Mr Andy Crooks for saying he will become an Everton legend. That performance certainly suggests he could be!

Yep.... thought he did very well, but chances are he'll be off to Scunny again once Moyes faves are back

As he has the ability to pass the ball whilst looking calm, I feel he will struggle in our side if he gets a run. My reason is that JH will be dropped as soon as Dusty is fit and he will suddenly find himself playing simple passes to players who seriously dont want the ball. At least JH is willing to pass it round so offering an option.

After what he come back from, its really is remarkable, Jonny's also been excellent, he's a top notch CH despite what many people on here say about him.

Given how much shite he takes from the crowd, I thought it appropriate that someone spoke up for how well Mad Johnny played yesterday too.

They were the only two though...

The rest of them should be fuckin' ashamed of themselves.

Dean 884; don't worry, they'll soon coach all that passing crap out of him. He seems to be able to play there for 12-15yrs. Surprise surprise, JH a decent CH. 2 positions sorted 9 to go.

He hasn't looked out of his depth at this level plus he offers a threat at set pieces, two games two chances. I think him and JH look good.

I'm not one of the rabid anti-Moyes crew, but if finances are such that we have to sell to survive surely he has to get the likes of Duffy, Wallace, Forshaw, Baxter off the bench and into the first team shop window for real game time alongside mentors like Hietega so as to try to enhance their value - hoping to hell that if they are truely shit, that their mentors and the rest of the 8 or 9 seasoned pros can cover their sins long enough until some mug buys them for an inflated price as a Premier League player.

^Steve, did you sneak a peek at Kenwright's business plan by any chance?

Looks to have the makings of a good combination. We badly need to find a pairing that limits the amount we concede because we only score twice on bank holidays and the Queen birthday.

I was saying for a long time that we are a better team with Johnny at the back but he is a small CB. Shane is excellent in the air and has been unlucky from set pieces too.

At the point that Jag comes back Shane could have 10-15 games under his belt. If were safe at that point he should stay in the side until the end of the year.

Moyes biggest sucess in developing players has been with defenders so it bodes well for us.

In this non-entity of a season I hope he stays in the side and gets some valuable experience, but I fear he'll be benched once Distin or Jags is back and JH will either be benched or deployed in a holding role.

Bad Times..

I remain convinced that Shane Duffy will be a top class player and has the potential to be an Everton legend. I am concerned though that we,in a situation where silver linings are hard to come by,are placing too much hope in him. He has all the attributes need to be a superb central defender but lacks the pace of ,say, Kevin Ratcliffe.
In time that will be more than compensated by an ability to read the game in the way that Bobby Moore did.(much as I hype him I'm not comparing him to Bobby Moore and never will). He needs a run in the side but careful handling as well. He will make mistakes and I hope that he doesn't suffer a backlash for them. Shane Duffy will be a great player but he is way short of solving what is wrong at Everton.

Very true Andy. But getting good young players coming in and staying in is a start. I'd have loved to see a bit more of Mustafi too.

It's sad that we have to think this way but Duffy's emergence could mean a CB leaving and generating a bit of transfer cash.
