Season 2011-12
The Mail Bag
Go back to go forward?
Donovan said after the City game, "We now know what works and we have seen what doesn't" And so we do: Donovan, The Stracman, Pienaar, Duffy, Drenthe ? they all work in both senses of the word, all of those bar 1 are loans and of them, while I would like to see Donovan stay, I don't think it is in his long-term plan, no matter how much he tweets about loving us.
We need cash to cash in... on our loanees. So what's left to hock? Not a lot... only players.
I think most admit that our previous slash-and-burn business plan is not the way to go, but what else is there? I can't see the banks giving us another £12+ mill to spend. So we might have to do the never again one more time.
My short question is, who hasn't been missed??
Answer: Jagielka and Rodwell... sorry but sacrifices have to be made and these two drew my short straw.
Alternatives: Do nothing? not an option...The Banks give us more credit? not likely... The Board put money in for the first time this century? even less likely. One of these 12 Investors has a mad rush to blood to the wallet?....nah.
Sorry lads, clear your lockers and get packing.
Any more options?

The only issue I have with selling those players who might generate a transfer pot is that those there is not the serious depth at the back that you might think. There is no real adequate replacement for Baines at hand if he is sold. If Neville goes, either through retirement or as a sale, it leaves Hibbert on his own as our only recognised right back. To my knowledge, and correct me if I am wrong, most of our younger players who are either rated or have gotten game time this season have been midfielders or forwards. That would mean that any money raised from player sales would need to be used in part to buy cover at the back.
In some respects those respects this does bring us back to square one. It will be interesting to see what happens.
The way the club is 'run' means the only way we will ever have a transfer budget is to recycle players and hopefully make some profit on them. The manager currently in place is excellent at developing a player and upping their value. He's also very reluctant to let a player go that he trusts.
This January has shown how important it is to keep a squad fresh and how a few new faces can give a club a lift. I hope this makes some impression on the manager.
Were well covered at CB. Distin probably has no real transfer value. Duffy is young and able and won't mind being a squad player for maybe another season as long he gets a decent amount of games in cups and when injuries strike.
Heitinga is younger and better than Jagielka IMO, and with the Jag at the the tipping point in terms of value, he's the obvious one to be moved on. I like and admire the way he plays and how he conducts himself but if someone comes in with Circa £10m then the club would be fools to turn it down.
With all the JT goings on he could well be set to start for England and a good championship could see us get a decent fee.
With Moyes, I do still think that he still has that eye for a bargain.I think that for him, it probably came as both a relief, and something of a surprise, that he got to do the business that he did in this transfer window. I think that I would be happy to see him hang on to the loan players on a permenant basis, both for the sake of the squad and for his own confidence and motivation levels.
Many people have said that he has become overly negative and a pale shadow of the Moyes that started with us ten seasons ago. I think that getting some control back over the squad and transfers in general will give him a huge boost. If the fans can see the difference in the squad and the style of play, then Moyes must be able to see it too. To even give him five to six million in the summer out of any player sales could well work wonders.
agree with every word of that
If getting rid of Jagielka meant we would secure Drenthe and Pienaar / Donovan permanently, I'd be happy (not that I think that's a likely scenario at all)
Bidwell and Garbutt are rated very highly and doing well out on loan - both are left backs!
Rodwell should be kept though he has class.
Yes he is different to what we have got in that he has pace and is willing to take on a man.
However far too many times he has given the ball away or not tracked back (one of the reasons people couldn't wait to get rid of Billy)
For me he is a decent sub to bring on after 75 mins, but when he starts he is too erratic and cannot be trusted to do his job
If we could only sign him or Pienaar in the summer, I know which one I would go for.
As for selling Jags, behave. He has been superb for us and will continue to be superb.
Rodwell on the other hand is a conundrum. One of the few players we could get decent money for, however I would like nothing better than for him to be a success for us for years to come (and he defo has the ability to be that)
Rodwell and Fellaini was just starting to work until he got the injury. If he can stay fit and prove he is worth a place ahead of Gibson then we have the potential for a really strong midfield (with Pienaar and a pacy right sided player ... if only Landon would stay)
Just need a young up and coming right back (Clyne?) and a striker with out and out pace to play alongside Jelavic
Even The Stracq is improving :-)
Rodwell in the Donovan role? Behave.
When was the last time he whipped in a deadly cross? Or beat a man with a piece of skill or neat one two? Or created a goal with a perfectly weighted through ball?
Stephen Kenny, spot on. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we get an £8m bid for Saha from Fenerbahce and a £6m offer from West Ham for Yakubu?
I know I'd have took the £1m for Neville from Spurs last January. We need to move these players on at the right time and bring the youngsters through in place.
He doesnt seem to get spoke about these days!!

As all Evertonians know, we deserve trophies and our flags to be flying in Europe! If the banks won't let us expand, then as true Evertonians we need to find a way of helping our beloved Toffee team to buy his contract and give us the progress we so need.
Lets stop the boo boys and anti-Kenwright people and help. If anyone from EFC reads this, then I have my tenner ready!
How much will we need to bring Landon to Goodison permanently?
