Just Do It

 30 Comments: First  |  Last

There have been some rumours going around that Nike are to be our kit supplier from next season onwards. I'm not sure if an official announcement has been made yet but...

I work in Sports Marketing and was at The Northern Ireland game last night as a guest of The IFA. I got chatting with some of the guys from Adidas about football in general and he scowled a bit when I said I was an Evertonian (due to their rivalry with Nike) before confirming to me that Nike would be our kit partners next season.

Kitbag will still be our merchandising partners. So, for those who are interested, it is Nike next year.

He also said that he was sceptical how successful the Warrior - Liverpool deal would be... apparently it is a case of Henry rubbing the back of one of his good friends (the Warrior CEO).

James,

I thought Warrior were paying the shite a fortune for the privilege?

Do you think our association with Nike will make any difference to the club other than a better looking kit?

I don't doubt they are Stephen. I think the adidas guys were referring to the success of warrior breaking into the football market.

Will Nike make a notable difference to what wegain commercially? Probably not, we aren't barca, inter etc so not their premium brands. But the only reason nike have been awarded the contract will be because it has the best commercial terms of all the tenderers. Our increased exposure in the USA will also help.

So we will get better kit and merchandising range, the best offer we received so can only be positive.

Landon's a Nike endorser. It's well known here that Galaxy are pressed up tight to the MLS salary cap and must dump some big contract(s) after this season. Hmmmm?

I don't think the Warrior kit deal will be as beneficial to Liverpool as they have desperately tried to spin it. Warrior are not going to have global markets out in Asia and Africa selling Liverpool kits like Adidas do. They won't even have deals in place yet with half of the British sports retailers. Yes the up front sponsorship deal looks a lot on paper, but how much are they missing out on in terms of revenue streams compared to a club like United? Adidas rejected Liverpool not the other way round.

I actually don't mind the Le Coq Sportif stuff, and i think the two kits this year look good, but Nike kits would look better.

Seems to make sense with some of the retro LCS kits getting shifted at 20 quid this month.
I think we miss a massive commercial opportunity across the pond. Everton are a club whose stock is rising over in the states for obvious reasons but still a long way behind United etc.
A massive American brand pushing our kits with the Howard and Donovan connection could do us a world of good. Maybe a guy in a one bedroom appartment in Manchester, New Hampshire will pop up to buy us.

I am happy that Nike are going to do our kits regardless of whether it earns the club massive amounts of cash. Still, any funds would be welcome!

It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever who our kit is made by. Its the dame material made in the same sweat shops by the same children.

I live in Cairns Australia and never see a Everton kit for sale up here. Therefore I have always bought through Everton Direct so hopefully with the change we can finally try and force our way into the Australian market

How long have we had Tiger Tim and still there isn't a shirt in sight, therefore cant be worse

Nike are far more comfortable than LCS but there's no guarantee I'll get our kit from brick and mortar. The last time we sported Umbro, every other prem club was available except yep - ours. The range included championship clubs by Umbro. Typical.

If it means people outside of Liverpool One can get a kit when walking around there local precinct on a Saturday then great.
Birkenhead used to have an Everton shop, it always seemed to do ok when I used to ask the staff, now if I walk into JDs or any other sports shop I cringe when I see Chelsea and Man City kits alongside the shite with our kit invisible, its a joke, this is a town were a large proportion of people can see the main stand from their doorstep yet can only find other teams kits in the local shops, the clubs farcial kitbag deal has done alot of damage in recruiting and keeping outsiders supporting our team.

I have heard that Nike will be taking over from LCS from next season but that we will actually have the Umbro logo on our shirts instead of the Nike one... which is a shame, I think, as it's kind of like Nike saying, "Well, we'll have them but will give them that shitty logo we've got instead of the one that is recognised worldwide"!!

Out of curiosity, why was anyone from Adidas at this game or even allowed to the game when both nations involved are with Umbro, which is part of the Nike empire?

Can't remember the last time I saw an Everton top in a sports shop. If you're a wide eyed kid you get a choice of the same 5 or 6 teams. Amazes me that one of them is always spurs (even when they were crap a couple of seasons ago) and Newcastle (even when they're in Div 2 (in old money).
A loss of advertising in every sports shop. Can't help generating a young following can it?

The change of manufacturer to Nike (or its sub-brand Umbro) won't affect distribution arrangements as these are governed by Kitbag's deal with EFC (LCS would not have had a say in this) ? i.e. everything via Everton Direct. Man City seemd to have similar arrangements (i.e. only purchase via the club) but these have been revised and you can now buy their kits in JD Sports etc.

I have personality liked the recent LCS kits after a shaky start with an awful update of the 83-85 kit (how did they manage to mess that up?). Umbro have gone off the boil somewhat and can be "samey".

Personally I feel Umbro took a quantum leap forward with their tailored range ? just after we ditched them!

A mate of mine who works at nike confirmed this to me last July. It will be a Nike kit. If you look at Brazil's latest kit and replace the colours with royal blue and white trim, them that's our new kit.

How much difference it will make is hard to tell. However, I'm guessing we will shift more merchandise though.

LCS have done a reasonable job on the shirts for the past two seasons but their leisure side is woeful. Nike do that well.

However, as someone pointed out, it won't actually make much difference as the contract is exclusive to Kitbag and so you won't find them for sale other than the two shops & the website.

Alex Kociuba #843, completely wrong. The different manufacturers make a world of difference due to different distribution contracts and such.

It's also an image thing. As has been mentioned in other responses, our exposure in the North America is growing a bit, and it doesn't take a doctorate in marketing to know that NIKE is a brand that people will buy, some regardless of what team is on the crest. Americans just love NIKE (apologies James et al if I am off the mark to you guys personally).

As has also been mentioned, the board couldn't be so inept as to be signing a deal with a new manufacturer if it wasn't a better deal than the previous one, so this can only be a positive, really.

If that Chang academy was worth anything to us then it must be worth less now?

Re: Nike kits. If others are right and gear will still be sold through Kitbag then I'll resolve myself to not being able to buy anything for the kids for another few years.

For a club that apparently has terrible commercial revenue, we don't half seem to sell out of a lot of stuff.

Ernie, we sell out of stuff because the Club doesn't keep a large stock from having to work on a cash preferred basis. i.e. they can only stock what they can afford to buy with readies.
