Everton train at Goodison Park

 39 Comments: First  |  Last

I took my young son to watch everton train at Goodison Park this morning. It was very enjoyable watching them get put through their training and see what they do; all the different exercises and set pieces.

They finished off split into two teams and what I found surprising was that both teams didn't take it easy, they both got stuck in with some meaty challenges flying in. Watching from the sidelines, not batting an eyelid, was David Moyes who must encourage playing it at proper match tempo which was good to see.

The only downside was the absence of Marouane Fellaini... hope he's just having a rest. And the other was no-one was allowed to take photos inside.

Anyway, it was a enjoyable day and some little Nazi steward wasn't going to spoil it by acting like a stormtrooper every time someone got their phone out.
COYB.

I think we need to be careful about use of the word Nazi, it does have a very specific meaning.
Glad you & your boy enjoyed the day though Michael

Glad you both enjoyed the day.
I beleive it was just for season ticket holders and Evertonia members, although tickets were free. I took my lads along last year and we all (3) enjoyed the day and getting autographs later on.

When we heard about it last year we were told it was sort of on the hush-hush as they didin't want a rowdy element there. I take it this time was no different.

Well boo hoo, they should have invited as many in that want to come to watch them train especially with the semi final coming up, the chance of Moyes getting the fans back behind him (after ruining many of their hopes against the RS) and seeing the team in action.

To add insult to injury they stop people taking photographs inside. The PR machine is going to implode and one day it might just backfire in their faces.

COYB but Moyes OUT (Sorry)

Fellaini was rested incase he gets a Yellow, though more likely the knock he got on Sat.

Geoff; we all know what a Nazi was 70yrs ago and we should never forget it either, but words, meanings, and applications change, evolve, in a homeopathic way eg what in large amounts is poison and can kill you, used in a miniscule way has a different effect.

For instance; I will stop being a language nazi if you stop being a PC nazi

Indeed Derek, it doesn't do to be too literal with terms - after all one could well argue the Nazis were even less 'socialist' than New Labour!

Has anyone else noticed that very often when one of our players fronts the media he does not play in the next game.

Yesterday it was Fellaini's turn to be in the limelight. Hope he is being saved for the semi.

Mark 632. Sorry mate, would you believe it ? my son wanted one of them 3 fuckin foot hot dogs, so I missed it... but it wasn't a match they played, it must've being in the set pieces they were practising.

Also, I would like to apologise to any one I offended by using the word 'Nazi' ? he was just an annoying little prick. COYB

Fellaini was tackled from behind towards the end of the West Brom game. He says he has a sore achilles but will be okay.

Drenthe, Coleman, Rodwell and McFadded took a full part... no Ossie, Gueye or Felli.

Light running, simple passing through / around a gate, 10-a-side keep-ball, 10-a-side match on 2/3 pitch, and a drill involving crossing and shooting.

A few observations:

? Moyes led this session ? it was him barking the orders and organising each section. I can't see many other managers being so involved in this side of things.

? It was a high tempo match and there were one or two tasty challenges - Baines and Drenthe had words at one point! Why no shinpads if it's like this?

? No set-piece or penalties being practiced - I can understand this at an open session.

? The standard of passing and especially shooting was poor. The amount of times the ball was lost to the opposition was almost comedic (Coleman and Jelavic particularly).

? I was impressed with a few ? Baxter and a tall lad who almost broke the Park End goal with a rocket of a shot... who is he?!

Derek, surely the point is that in your example the word 'pedant' would be more appropriate. Nazi has such awful connotations for very many people, myself included. Michael's response 'he was just an annoying little prick' makes my point I think.

If you think Nazis only existed 70 years ago then I'm afraid that you are sadly misinformed. I appreciate that this isn't really the forum for this discussion so perhaps we'll just agree to differ on this one. COYB

There is a video of the open training session on the Daily Post website. I will warn you, this took ages to load on my laptop, and it is shit so not worth the wait. Its just a snapshot of the warm up and cool down! Anyway, if anyone can be bothered:

Tony, I don't believe that 'I think we need to be careful about use of the word Nazi' shows intolerance - just suggesting that it may not have been the most appropriate word under the circumstances.

Whereas (in my opinion) 'Oh shurrup Geoff!, FFS' is intolerant.
I don't have a delicate little mind, just a vivid memory of what horrors the real Nazis perpetrated on my family.

As I said earlier, this isn't the forum for this discussion, we are clearly of different minds on this & thankfully in this country at this time we are allowed to be so!

Great sob story Geoff, apologise if any offence is taken but you are still being a PC worrior on a lighthearted footy site.

In breaking news the FA have stated that any Everton player man marking Andy Carroll at Wembley will be booked for time wasting.

Fair enough Tony ? you are entitled to your opinion on my being a PC warrior & I take your point about TW being a lighthearted footy site.

I wasn't actually offended as such it's just that, perhaps as I'm of the older generation, I find that casual use of strongly emotive words dilutes their ability to shock. It's the same with the 'f word' (if that's not too twee for you) which has become a casual part of everyday conversation & has therefore ceased to convey any real meaning. When I was younger, it was quite shocking to hear it used! If & when you ever actually meet a real Nazi you'll perhaps understand my point

It may be a Nazi trait but it's also reminiscent of a lot of Kopites I know.

I think the comments after yours show this isn't a lighthearted site at all.

Geoff is well within his rights to ask for a change in language, which he did in a respectful manner.

Some of the shit posted back to him is nasty and done from behind a keyboard means it's a shithouses trick too.

And rightly so. I certainly don't have the time to head down to Goodison Park on a Tuesday afternoon, but this is the Easter holidays and the open training session is no doubt aimed mainly at children. As a kid, I would have loved to go and watch Everton train. Also, given that it was free, it might have people who can't afford to take their children to go and watch Everton in the premier league, take them to go and see their heroes in real life - and maybe to go and visit Goodison for the first time.
