Season 2011-12
The Mail Bag
The Everton Mentality?
Years ago, when I was young, there was a must read magazine, 'Charles Buchan's Football Monthly', and in that publication a journalist called John McAdam talked in one article about the mentality of certain clubs and their fans.
He said Everton fans were basically of a gloomy, fearing-the-worst mentality whereas Liverpool fans were generally cheerful, Liverpool comedians.
Reading the comments in the responses to 'Beating Liverpool' like Nick Entwistle's and Kevin Sparke et alia and my own feelings of fear and dread that something untoward, a Howard Webb howler or Fellaini doing a Ballotelli impression could happen. I'm beginning to believe that McAdam may have had something!

They firmly believe we will buckle as on Knobhead poster from Hertfordshire stated.
"I have followed Liverpool for 12 years, we have the big game mentality, they don't."
He gave his age as 43 ???
They have no comprehension of what a derby means to the team and the fans.
We do. Each and every player does.
That's why we will win. That's why we will win well.
Finally, we have the opportunity to break their hearts, and break them we will. Grind them into little pieces. Every part of me is confident of a win.
This time we have them. This time is our time. No mercy. It's been a long wait, too long but this is our final.
To me winning tomorrow is more important than winning the cup. But once won, that's a different matter.
I think Gerrard and Carragher know what a derby means.

This game is bigger for every Everton player than his counterpart at LFC. No question about that.

No comment. Just wanted to read your post again.
Tomorrow's game is all about which manager instills the "wanting it badly" into the players psyche.
Not only that I think the 3-0 at Anfield should work for us (hope hope)
James, how strange, the time for me is crawling along like a trek across the Sahara.
James ... nice to see Saturdays playing ball again!
It stands to reason theyre more arrogant, complacent, confident, even this long after, and we're fearing the worst.
Simple fact is ... we are currently the better team and should go into the game with heads held high.
Everton have had their moments against Redshite over the last 40 years although sometimes it seems they have had most of the luck in important cup games like semi-finals and finals. As things stand at the moment we have as good a chance as ever of beating them.
They have spent billions compared to Everton in the last 12 months and basically failed because they will not make the Champions League.
Yes we can all feel nervous about tomorrow but I am sure the same amount of Redshite fans feel the same way. I have always had the same feeling before semi-finals and even more so derby matches.
All we need is a firm referee who doesn't screw up at any stage of the game as many have been doing lately. Other than that I believe the misfortunes of the two derby matches this season can be disregarded as I think they fear the Blues now more than ever.
The whole culture of Queen Kenny's spoilt, arrogant, cheating, deluded "victims" has been exposed for all to see.
There is no place for them to hide tomorrow.
We will put the "devil's spawn" to the sword.
This is our year.
Believe it and it will happen.
Having said that - this Liverpool side are poor team, with a powder puff midfield, no width (apart from Bellamy... who won't get 90 minutes) a lumbering centre forward and a known cheat (known by referees) a very dodgy keeper and the whole country apart from Liverpool (and a couple of Man City supporters I know) want us to win.
On paper we should beat them with ease - but the game isn't played on paper - it's played on grass.
We need to go out playing as we've played in recent weeks and at Sunderland (home and away) - we need to keep possession, we need to use width, we need to get the ball to Jelavic and we need to forget nerves - the worst thing we can do is to get into a slugging match with Liverpool and start chucking high balls from deep - which is how I expect them to play...
My heart and head say we'll beat them... my nerves and experience are saying - don't get your hopes up... these red bastards have dashed them too many times in the past.
He probably won't read it but it made me feel better. Like I've contributed something.
I'm going down the pub tonight and will probably end up leathered but I just can't stand staying in and thinking about tomorrow.
I can't wait but I'm dreading it as well. A very strange feeling but something I'm sure we are all used to.
Just go for it, Moysie.
And we'll blow the buggers away.
I'm going to struggle eating that tomorrow.
I'm also going tomorrow. THAT is why we'll not lose. We simply do not lose when I'm watching!
To think that we are only two wins away from our first piece of silver in 17 overdue years, I thought maybe it was our time three years ago but it wasn't to be, this time I have a similar level of optimism, the last few performances and results have been encouraging. Pienaar will be missed tomorrow, but in Jelavic we have a center forward now who can create opportunities and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can produce tomorrow.
Anyone reading this who has to get up in three hours time to leave for tomorrows game, switch off and get some sleep please?!

The hours towards game time are just flying by.
