The Everton Mentality?

 24 Comments: First  |  Last

Years ago, when I was young, there was a must read magazine, 'Charles Buchan's Football Monthly', and in that publication a journalist called John McAdam talked in one article about the mentality of certain clubs and their fans.

He said Everton fans were basically of a gloomy, fearing-the-worst mentality whereas Liverpool fans were generally cheerful, Liverpool comedians.

Reading the comments in the responses to 'Beating Liverpool' like Nick Entwistle's and Kevin Sparke et alia and my own feelings of fear and dread that something untoward, a Howard Webb howler or Fellaini doing a Ballotelli impression could happen. I'm beginning to believe that McAdam may have had something!

Rich - Take it from this barmy, balrog's ballsack, we're whipping them.

The hours towards game time are just flying by.

I'm as positive as anyone bar the Doddmeister on these pages as my couple of Bring Them All On submissions through the season will prove (and have born out to be correct, ehem...) but against the reds they have some weird ability to come up smelling of roses. The 3-0 a case in point. I hope my fear is misplaced if only for tomorrow.

Youv'e only gotta look at the red forums to believe their arrogance.

They firmly believe we will buckle as on Knobhead poster from Hertfordshire stated.

"I have followed Liverpool for 12 years, we have the big game mentality, they don't."

He gave his age as 43 ???

This game is bigger for every Everton player than his counterpart at LFC. No question about that.

They have no comprehension of what a derby means to the team and the fans.
We do. Each and every player does.

That's why we will win. That's why we will win well.

Finally, we have the opportunity to break their hearts, and break them we will. Grind them into little pieces. Every part of me is confident of a win.

This time we have them. This time is our time. No mercy. It's been a long wait, too long but this is our final.

To me winning tomorrow is more important than winning the cup. But once won, that's a different matter.

I also heard a couple of Liverpool fans talking about how it is between them and Chelsea for next seasons 4th place, after Manchester clubs and Arsenal. They wonder why we call them deludes?

Christine.

I think Gerrard and Carragher know what a derby means.

Dan (827) - I'm surprised that you could understand them. Clearly you are able to understand Danish, Norwegian or whichever of the languages their fans typically speak...

Great post Christine. Pound for pound, I think we are just simply better than them. Our form says it all, as opposed to theirs.

Tomorrow's game is all about which manager instills the "wanting it badly" into the players psyche.

Not only that I think the 3-0 at Anfield should work for us (hope hope)

James, how strange, the time for me is crawling along like a trek across the Sahara.

Unfortunately we've had a history over last 40 years of all too brief highs and long miserable lows. They had 20 years at the top, winning everything in sight (biting down hard on lip as I type).

It stands to reason theyre more arrogant, complacent, confident, even this long after, and we're fearing the worst.

Simple fact is ... we are currently the better team and should go into the game with heads held high.

Everybody has their opinion and most Liverpool sympathizers even those writing in magazines and the like will 'disrespect' Everton and their fans just as most Everton followers will do the same. It's all part of the games we play just to create talking points and controversy.

Everton have had their moments against Redshite over the last 40 years although sometimes it seems they have had most of the luck in important cup games like semi-finals and finals. As things stand at the moment we have as good a chance as ever of beating them.

They have spent billions compared to Everton in the last 12 months and basically failed because they will not make the Champions League.

Yes we can all feel nervous about tomorrow but I am sure the same amount of Redshite fans feel the same way. I have always had the same feeling before semi-finals and even more so derby matches.

All we need is a firm referee who doesn't screw up at any stage of the game as many have been doing lately. Other than that I believe the misfortunes of the two derby matches this season can be disregarded as I think they fear the Blues now more than ever.

The will of the nation is behind us.

The whole culture of Queen Kenny's spoilt, arrogant, cheating, deluded "victims" has been exposed for all to see.

There is no place for them to hide tomorrow.

We will put the "devil's spawn" to the sword.

This is our year.

Believe it and it will happen.

If Friday the 13th is bad luck, Saturday the 14th must be good luck... and perhaps an Evertonian, James?

Richard - like you I'm long in the tooth, and a lifetime of seeing dodgy refereeing decision go their way; bad tackles go unpunished from Tommy Smith to Stevie GBH and the lucky streak they seem to have in games has fed my pessimism that only materialises in derby matches.

Having said that - this Liverpool side are poor team, with a powder puff midfield, no width (apart from Bellamy... who won't get 90 minutes) a lumbering centre forward and a known cheat (known by referees) a very dodgy keeper and the whole country apart from Liverpool (and a couple of Man City supporters I know) want us to win.

On paper we should beat them with ease - but the game isn't played on paper - it's played on grass.

We need to go out playing as we've played in recent weeks and at Sunderland (home and away) - we need to keep possession, we need to use width, we need to get the ball to Jelavic and we need to forget nerves - the worst thing we can do is to get into a slugging match with Liverpool and start chucking high balls from deep - which is how I expect them to play...

My heart and head say we'll beat them... my nerves and experience are saying - don't get your hopes up... these red bastards have dashed them too many times in the past.

I've just Tweeted Tim Cahill and said "please don't have any inferiority complex tomorrow. We are better than them and we don't need to fear them. It's our time."

He probably won't read it but it made me feel better. Like I've contributed something.

I'm going down the pub tonight and will probably end up leathered but I just can't stand staying in and thinking about tomorrow.

I can't wait but I'm dreading it as well. A very strange feeling but something I'm sure we are all used to.

I carry two keys in my back pocket. A silver and a bronze. By predicting, blindly, which key I will randomly lift out I can make important forecasts. On my way home from work I decided ;bronze key and we win tomorrow. The bronze key won. It ended in a best of seven competition.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

Just go for it, Moysie.

And we'll blow the buggers away.

Andy (902) that's just shear chance. Now my system of following the same route from my car to Goodison as long as we keep winning and then changing it for the next game if we don't - now that has the ring of clear logic and common sense to it. Unfortunately I won't be able to use it tomorrow!

Well I know for certain that Everton haven't been beaten this year when I've had a bacon, sausage and egg double decker before the game.

I'm going to struggle eating that tomorrow.

I've been to 12 games this year. 2 Away league, 6 home league, the 3 home cup games and a league cup game. And I've not seen us lose one.

I'm also going tomorrow. THAT is why we'll not lose. We simply do not lose when I'm watching!

I admittedly had a sneak at a LFC page an hour or two ago and had a smile when one supporter asked - 'Is tomorrows game bigger than the Carling Cup Final'. Allow me to give you a pointer- no one gives a shit about the Carling Cup, it is a nothing trophy that nobody cares about, hope that helped you out.

To think that we are only two wins away from our first piece of silver in 17 overdue years, I thought maybe it was our time three years ago but it wasn't to be, this time I have a similar level of optimism, the last few performances and results have been encouraging. Pienaar will be missed tomorrow, but in Jelavic we have a center forward now who can create opportunities and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can produce tomorrow.

Anyone reading this who has to get up in three hours time to leave for tomorrows game, switch off and get some sleep please?!
