Pienaar, come or go?
17 Comments: I?m just wondering what the next move is going to be with regards to Steven Pienaar.
David Moyes is in a difficult situation: he never should have sold the guy in the first place. Spurs' style of football currently doesn?t suite him, he needs to be surrounded by ball players.
It would make perfect business sense for Moyes to push for another loan deal, but I?m almost sure Spurs would not entertain the suggestion. My guess is they?ll sell for about £4.5M.
Then there?s the salary issue as well. What he?s currently earning at Spurs he can easily get elsewhere. Should he sign for us, this would cause havoc within the camp with regards to salary structures.
Any way this is looked at, Everton ultimately looses. Questions will need to be asked: Why was he not given an improved contract in the first place instead of now having to cough up a wage increase and massive transfer fee?

He was sold because he wanted to leave! There was no contract we could have offered him to make him stay. He wanted CL football.
For whatever reason it didn't work out for him at spurs. My guess is he will end up here next year. I think if Spurs do go for Rogers though that might put a spanner in the works as he rates Pienaar highly.

Everton have already agreed a deal for £3M. He will sign for next season.
The main question that needs to be asked is WHY we are in such dire financial straights that this becomes an issue at all. It is not as though he is asking for wages at the top end of the Prem League range; nor do we have a large squad to pay.
As far as I'm aware, Pienaar was offered £60k a week during October/November time, 2010-11 season. He and his agent kept stalling. The fact that Pienaar didn't sign basically said he wasn't going to stay but was going to leave on a free in the summer of 2011.
It was Spurs who took the gamble of paying £3m in January 2011 (considering they could've had him for free 6 months later) and give pienaar £70k per week which he accepted and knew he was in for European football, something EFC can't offer.
Spurs have every right to recoup their money and considering he still has 3 full seasons on his Spurs contract we won't be able to get him on the cheap Everton-style prices. My guess is he will return to Spurs' pre-season camp, have a word with their manager, and tell him he wants to come back. My guess is we could have him back for what we paid and put him back on the contract we originallly offered him. I think it would suit everyone.

James, he left because we weren't prepared to offer him the contract he was after.
The answer to that one,Chris,is simple.In order to keep in the top half of the Prem,the Club has constantly expended more than it takes in.Players`wages is the main drain but if you wish to compete you have to pay competitive salaries.
The Board has found it beyong them to generate funds by building a new ground or developing the old one.They have also failed to attract a buyer or substantial investor.
As I say,simples.....and I can see no sign of that situation changing.

Doddy you are right - you are now asking and answering the right questions, many supporters still havent got to the WHY bit.

Sorry for delay in replying to that one ,Chris.I will do so but wanted to build my response into a meaningful piece which,as yet,I haven`t had time to complete.
I think most supporters would like Pienaar to stay, but supporters dont have to deal with the complex issues of running a football club.
Like all bar 3 or 4 clubs in the Premiership most clubs are trying to balance the books and in most cases failing. The demand on clubs by supporters to always buy new players, irrispective of whether the club can afford it must be a problem for most chairmen.
Moyes understandably has asked for funds to buy players early in the next transfer window, but seeing as the banks have refused to lend Everton any money for transfers I am not sure how we make the funds for new transfers available.
Yes we could sell to buy, but someone has to want to buy your players for that to happen. Probably only Baines,Fellaini,Jelavic and possibly Rodwell would bring in sufficient funds to make it worthwhile.

If Harry gets the England job, probable, Moyes could, and I stress the word could, be the next Spurs boss. Would he sell Pienaar to Everton ? I doubt it very much, his main concern would then be Spurs, and he wouldn't sell a player he clearly likes.
Apparently the FA are going to announce the new England manager before the end of the season, so we probably won't have long to wait to find out.

I don't think spurs would go for moyes, and I don't think moyes would go to spurs.
There's only two clubs in the country that I think he would go to, where he could actually be given time to build as he has at everton, which would be a genuine improvement;
Man Utd, Arsenal.

Doddy, I read an interesting article recently about how Newcastle have finally found a way of running that Club that works. Basically they recruit young talent and refuse, point blank, to pay silly money. Players who want it get moved on. So far this season it's worked a dream and could get them in the CL, so it's not absolutely essential to pay top dollar. The potential flaw in that, of course, is you have to keep the supply of young talent coming through which aint easy, if it was everyone would be doing it.
That may well work at Newcastle, Howard, but their gates are now 15 to 20 thousand higher than ours and they have a modern ground with very well developed facilities generating huge additional income. They also have a wealthy, excellent businessman in the chair who has paid off £millions of inherited debt.
Having said all that, I`m not sure how someone of his ilk would go down with Evertonians, though!

James #385, Pienaar left because we couldn't offer him pay parity with Arteta who at the time he was just as good as.

We desperately need wingers for both sides of the pitch though. They should definitely be our priorities in the summer (should we have any money).
