Why I love ToffeeWeb

 74 Comments: First  |  Last

Having been a reader of Toffeeweb since the early days, I thought I'd just congratulate the boys on a fantastic product. I'll trawl other sites but will always come back pretty quickly as I feel I might be missing out on something.

The Mailbag is my favourite, always passionate and nobody has anything coming anywhere near it. Quite a few regulars posting and I reckon it's like having mates that you just haven't 'met' ? who wouldn't want to have a beer with Doddy or Marshy, polar opposites but both with the same hope at heart?

So keep those letters coming in, just love ranting at the computer screen. Look forward to the day when we can get all the ToffeeWebbers together in the one place for a few coldies.

All the ToffeeWebbers together? In one place? I predict a riot!

Nevertheless, a good sentiment. Much as the occasionally relentless underlying negativity can get to me (and we wonder why they call us 'bitters'), the quality of articles and insight and the general ease of use of the site are second to none, ensuring that I always come back.

Let's hope 2012-13 gives us all something to be a bit more positive about, eh!

Some sort of get together is not as ridiculous as is it may seem. I appreciate that it is totally impractical for some, but when, for example I queue for Chips I am always trying to spot or imagine seeing Ken.

Why not agree a pub, say the Winslow (where I go) and describe a meeting place within the pub,and a few of us could meet for a laugh and banter.

I went to Wembley the other week and saw this bloke who sits a few rows behind me, I think he is an idiot who constantly calls Moyes, you know what, he saw me and came over and spoke and suddenly we had a bond (of sorts), next time I see him I will not think bad of him but as the fellow Evertonian from the pub at Wembley at ten to nine in the morning.

Yeah, Michael and Lyndon do a great job with Toffeeweb. Most "non-virtual" Evertonians I know either read (but don't necessarily contribute) or at least know the site.

There's always great and often thoroughly informed opinions... Even if you might not share those opinions - but that is of course what makes the site so compelling. I read far more than I put in certainly these days because of everything else, but as you wrote David, it is like having a running commentary from mates you haven't met.

Eugene is a weather beaten guy with glasses and decent hair which is gradually receding. He might be slightly portly and I reckon his gait is relaxed.

His accent is probably shot to pieces because he's lived everywhere but the moon. But I don't think his speech patterns match his writing so don't expect him to shout the occasional word when he's talking.

Richard Dodd is a slightly chubby, ruddy faced loveable optimist that nobody dislikes. He'll be the first one to buy a round. He would be...mid 30's and might wear quite smart clothes and I reckon he never wears the shirt outside a football ground. You are unlikely to see him on the couch in the shirt, his boxer shirts while eating a Big Mac.

Dave,

I agree. Being exiled here in Washington DC, this site is a breath of fresh air and keeps me in touch.

The banter is always interesting and as others have already noted, this is easily the best football fan web site out there. Many remarkble, well written and researched contributions in the main and plenty of good argument.

As it happens I'm back in Liverpool from Thursday 10th May, returning to DC Sunday 13th May.

I'm up for a bevvy if it can be pulled off. When I'm home I usually bevvy in the Five Ways in Childwall or the Halfway House in Woolton.

I echo Steve's sentiments about being in touch with other supporters. I don't get much face to face contact with other Evertonians. It's rare to meet anyone here in the states who is a fan of a non-"big 4" side, let alone Everton.

I love that TW has people's actual names. Screen names look middle-schoolishish. Easily navigable. Variety of opinions. Posters tend to be well-informed. Best EFC fan site, In my opinion.

I think it would be a great idea for the regulars to meet up. I'm sure they have more in common than they know !

Although once everyone gets on again will the website have any posts ?!!? Could be the end !

I'm in Oz so a bit tricky as I'm sure it is for other fans dotted around the world. But would be great to put names to faces.

Also on the facebook page, can't you see the members of the group with pics ?

I agree Toffeeweb is a great site.
sometimes I think that people do not understand that we are all Evertonians, and have different views, and to some that is shocking.

As a result a few puts out personal attacks, which is sad.
There are rules, but not everyone seems to know or follow them.

Aside from this I have not been to a better site that discuss what is really going on at all times.

Take a look at the official site and all you see are yes sayers.
I have tried posting on the OS in the past, but it is useless as they remove any post that they do not agree with.

Great idea to arrange a get together of sorts.
The best time for that might be before a derby at Goodison!

Mark, my only real research has been to see the ads here... But isn't the while point of advertising to entice you to the thing you're promoting. Those ads are tantamount to ropey takeaway photos... If it looks like a turd in a bun on the pics best to walk past.

Like others have said TW is my only contact with other Evertonians. There are not too many of us here in Burnley. Sometimes it seems it's just my Dad and I.

I think a meet up is a great idea.

I reckon Eugene is bald,a bit of stubble and when he walks into his local all the other regulars exchange "knowing" glances.

Despite shaking my head in amazement at some of the negative shite on here, I can honestly say I would be a bit lost without TW.

Where else can I hear the likes of Doddy,Marsh,Ruane and Wilson??

If they all drank in the same boozer then that pub would quickly become my local. No matter how far away it might be.

Way back in the day, there was ToffeeNet, one of the feckless, irresponsible parents of this site. If I recall, after a while they even started arranging meet ups in Walton Road pubs before the games, and even got t-shirts done. I didn't by one, but they were subtle, with I think the tower from our logo encased in a "T". I think they patronised the Netley for a while, if one could ever patronise that place.

My first meeting with a Blue was a result of JANET, and I met Dr Dave Shepherd in The Mons, around 1990 I think.

Andrew James - priceless (I will be watching out for you [said in a slightly creepy tone]).

I always look out for my Toffeeweb heroes:

Nick Entwistle (for absolute sense, I nod in agreement with virtually everything you say)

Eugene Ruane (for unapologetic, cathartic and unfiltered brain dumping creativity - I want to work in your office)

Jimmy Sorheim (for a mad but passionate long range view of Goodison Park from a treehouse up a mountain)

Richard Dodd (doesn't let 'the bastards' bring him down)

Ciaron McGLone (used to drive me mad but now I miss him)

...But I don't know, meeting people off websites, I'm sure there is a golden rule about that?!

Drew, thank you for agreeing with me on everything. So people should!

Eugene to me is Ciarán McGlone's crazed cousin.

Jimmy, not so long on these boards but with his morose and depressive Norwegian outlook has certainly found a niche. And apparently voted Norway's Mr Happy three years running. First post I saw from him was this season recommending the signing of Beckham. Hasn't improved much from that shaky start.

Doddy is like from the film Twins. He's all that's good and played by Schwazenegger, and his opposite twin, all that's bad, played by Devito, is Tony Marsh.

Ken Buckley is the character from The Fast Show who's catchphrase is '...which is nice'.

John Fisher, known to those who hang round the live forum long after the final whistle is dressed solely in his white pants and Candy Liverpool top from around the Souness era. Phil Babb is his favourite ever player, but he can't remember why.

Lyndon, likes to throw in the occasional Latin. Ad Hominem last year, and two weeks ago there was one Latin term about accepting one's faults or something. Seems a nice chap but, you know, it makes him suspicious to me. Like we're all part of a grand experiment. Still, I have a burgeoning interest in Latin terms now.... bastard.

Finally Denis Richards, not so much a view on who he is, but I miss-read his name every time and think Denise Richards has become an Everton fan.

There must be some good looking men on Toffeeweb as I refuse to believe they are all beer-drinking, pot-bellied, and bald (come to think of it, that's most Australian women) no, l jest, they are not bald.

Where are all the girls? There should be a Ladies Corner for the women's team or female contributors, as they say "if you can't beat them, join them," at least you can fight over something your both passionate about!

Nothing wrong with the pink kit although l understand if it's difficult to walk into the city on a Friday night with it on if you're a bloke.

Toffeeweb, can't abide it but can't live without it, why? Because each and every one of you are as passionate as the other, but you all know, you can never have the last word...

In the midst of this mutual love fest, Eugene's imaginary appearance seem to be taking a bit of an undeserved hammering. So I'll join in: Rigsby from Rising Damp.

Actually come to think of it, if they can make a movie about fucking Facebook then surely to god they can give Toffeeweb it's moment of big screen glory. It might be talky as hell, with no action, shagging or special effects but, shite on a bike, the no expense spared cast should carry it through:

Starring:

Tobias Funke from 'Arrested Development' as 'Richard Dodd'.
Rigsby from 'Rising Damp' as 'Eugene Ruane'.
Ron Jeremy from 'loads of random grot flicks' as 'Roman Sidey'.
Bob Carolgees as 'Tony J Williams', with Spit the Dog as 'Jimmy Sorheim'.
'Wee' Jimmie Krankie as 'Nick Entwistle'.
Louis Walsh as 'Andy Crooks'.
Louie Spence as 'Martin Mason'.
'Wee' Jimmie Krankie as 'Nick Entwistle'.
Oscar the green grouch thing from Sesame Street with it's fucking head sticking out of a bin as 'Tony Marsh'.
Dog the Bounty Hunter as 'James Flynn'.

With extra special guest stars:

The dwarf from 'Don't look Now' as 'Ian Tunstead'

and

Blakey from 'On the buses' as 'Dave Wilson'.

On second thoughts, a 4hr black and white epic about a turd disintegrating in the sun would probably have more chance of awards glory. ("...and the Academy Award for Best Actor goes to...").
