Available for Nothing

 30 Comments: First  |  Last

The following players' contracts are about to run out and will potentially be available for nothing.

I know, I know - wages etc. But how many of these would improve our squad? Opinions welcome:

Craig Gordon

Dedryck Boyata
Paul Scharner

Michael Kightly
Martin Petrov
Danny Guthrie

Michael Owen
Andrew Johnson
Salomon Kalou
Ivan Klasnic
Hugo Rodallega

Thoughts?

Nicky Shorey has just been released by WBA, but at 31 maybe too old in DM's eyes; however, he was an England left back and would give good cover to Leighton Baines.

Rodallega would be a good shout. He could cover for Jelly or do a job behind him or cutting in from the flanks.

If possible, Hoilett, but he is likely to go somewhere with higher wages on offer (plus the compensation fee might be too high).

I wouldn't take Guthrie, but I would look at Diame if he doesn't go to the RS.

Kalou has looked decent under Di Matteo and, if he does go on a free, would probably command high wages (so that's a no-go).

I would target the two Wigan boys, and possibly Scharner (it would stop him scoring against us).

Kalou is a superb player, wouldn't be suprised if Wenger followed up his interest at last. Rodallega would be a good addition, and Hoilett, not on the list, would be a fantastic acquisition. Pogrebnyak is also out of contract as is Stephen Kelly, and both would be good squad additions.

Fillipo Inzaghi, Gianluca Zambrotta, Mark van Bommel, Alessandro Nesta and Gennaro Gattuso all left Milan. All about Pip's age too.

The trouble is, they are all either shite, or we have no chance of getting them.

People will probably say I'm mental for this, but I'd take Gattuso. Someone with a bit of tenacity in the middle, which I believe we have lacked for a long time.

Out of the others on the top list, in an ideal world I'd have Rodallega and Kalou, but that wont happen. Rodallega would be achievable though.

But never mind all this nonsense, first things first, get Pienaar back permanently.

Rodallega, who I believe we were rumored for in January before signing Jelavic, would be a good shout.

Kalou would be nice, but his wages are likely to be prohibitive. He doesn't strike me as the type of person to take less money.

Junior Hoilett is apparently available for around £2m in compensation and would be a good signing if not offered the world elsewhere.

Can't see any of the others appealing to be honest.

In general, I would take anyone capable of playing wide, creating chances or scoring goals, even if they were only going to be an impact substitute.

Of the people on the list, Petrov is too old, although as we have no-one else I might give him a one year deal depending on his demands, Kightly looked good a couple of years ago but not anymore, and Owen and Johnson probably wouldn't be worth the wages. I like Klasnic and looked him up the other week, he has a good Premier League scoring record per minutes on pitch, but he's a lot older than I had thought (31 or 32 I think) so again, not exactly an inspirational signing, and I'd rather see Vellios and (ahem) Anichebe develop.

I don't agree Bobby. With Saha gone i think that we have room for a 15-20 game a season striker in Owen who may net us 7-8 goals. Plus someone of his talent will surely help the younger generation

Let's face it... Moyesie loves Owen... he has been in for him a few times, even had talks in America and was set to sign until Man utd gazumped us. He's a typical Moyes signing... someone at the end of the career... available for nothing.

Judging by our complete lack of depth in squad, I'd have him on a pay-as-you-play only... and he might give us an edge in the derby. The Shite will be nervous one of their ex's will score against them.

Fair enough Mark, i know what your saying but with money so tight that there basically isnt any, i dont think thats a luxury we can afford.

Im not against the type of deal you mention, but Owen? We did it with Saha and for me got a good 2 years out of it before we made the mistake of giving him another deal, it was never going to get any better for him than his 2nd season.

Owen been massively injury prone for knocking on 10 years and is now basically a penalty box player. He's 32. We need legitimate cover/a partner for Jelavic. Someone who actually plays games, younger, still hungry.

I think Owens pretty much finished. He may get one good year, after all the injuries I kinda hope he does he deserves a break. I dont like to see that happening to any player really. If he wants to play on, maybe he should get away from the most physically demanding league, it would do him a favour. French league or something.

Nothing personal but think Owen would be a waste of time and resources. Reckon he will end up at QPR or similar. We should focus our resources on Pienaar, Hoilett and maybe Naismith (if he's as good as jelly makes out).

I don't want Michael Owen anywhere near Everton. We shouldn't be a home for players coming for a quick buck for their retirement pot. He had his chance before to come to us and he said no. Can't stand the bloke.

Cant really get too excited about any of those players apart from Kalou but i imagine he wages might be a problem. I would prefer us to get Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis from Wolves although i suspect the latter might opt to try his luck further up the pecking order in the EPL.

My other choice Clint Dempsey i dont think we will get either. And we need to find the money for Pienaar.

It's about time Owen went and did what he really wants to do... and became a jockey.

A mercenary of the highest order.

And how exactly would he help our kids? By keeping them off the pitch? By showing them how to produce a glossy brochure?

No thanks.

I'd take Petrov and Kalou.

Don't understand this 'mercenary' tag. Yes he has earned a good living but i don't think you can question his motives regarding joining United. He probably thought he would play more, especially in the early part of his United career. Has he hadn't won anything it is understandable. Don't wish to get overly moralistic about it, but many tags can be levelled at footballers, but there are a lot worse out there than Owen.
