Fellaini being groomed for 'Cahill role'?

Marouane Fellaini could become the first-choice starter in the "hole" behind Nikica Jelavic as David Moyes looks for Tim Cahill's successor in that position.

Cahill has made the "hole" behind the lone striker his own for almost all of his eight years at Goodison Park but at 32, the Australian's effectiveness as a regular starter has started to diminish and Moyes is planning for that new reality.

Though Fellaini cemented his reputation as one of the most impressive midfielders in the Premier League in a more defensive role, Moyes had great success in the latter part of this season pushing the Belgian into more advanced areas.

It was a move that coincided with an increase in goals, not just for Fellaini but for the team as a whole and that may prompt Moyes to deploy the Belgian in the hole routinely next season.

"Marouane is probably seen as more of a defensive midfield player," Moyes says on the official site, "but he's far better when he's joining in and getting forward because he can do a bit of everything.

"I've always known that Marouane can do [the Cahill] job. We had just been looking at the right time to do that.

"It's difficult to put him into any one box," Moyes continued. "He's got a goal in him, he does get forward and causes problems, but he's also very good at breaking the game up and doing other things. He's quite good at both jobs."

It's that versatility that makes Fellaini so valuable to an Everton side that is short on depth and Moyes has been highly encouraged with Fellaini's development in his time at Goodison.

"Young players mature. The decisions you make as a young player are sometimes different than when you get a bit older.

"His form has been good. He's been getting us a couple of goals in recent games, and long may that continue."
