Why David Moyes should start Shane Duffy against Wigan this weekend

Wigan have already admitted some players will be rested for their 6th Round tie at Goodison Park, and this is the perfect time for Shane Duffy to get a chance. He will be in front of a home crowd during a big match, and for the most part this will be a first-choice squad.

No chance.

Sounds like a playground scrap where you agree whether or not to do punches and kicks. Admittedly, mine wasn't the roughest school.

Anyway, its cup QF. Why would we be all nice just because they're resting?

And if it were a better school I'd remember sooner Jags is out. But World Cup Johnny on the bench? Don't see it. Maybe Disitn at a push but I think Duffy will continue on the sidelines.

The last match Duffy played against premier league opposition, he looked better than Johnny in the last match he played against premier league opposition, so I'd give Duffy the nod.

I suspect we'll see Heitinga though.....and I suspect that on Saturday afternoon we'll be discussing that mistake he made which cost us a goal, just like he did in the last few games he's played.

Duffy is slower than Heitinga so unless we're expecting an aerial bombardment from Wigan I don't see the point in swapping them. Nevermind trying out a new defensive partnership on the most important game of the season to date.

Its not a bad shout.

I have a horrible feeling that Heitinga is going to be scared of Kone and he will bottle it and be done by him again in the game on Saturday.

Then again, Martinez said he will bring in the changes, so he might even play.

I would say play Heitinga, and pray.

Heitinga is a very good CB that has had his conny knocked by Moyes. He was player of the season and then dropped for the Distan. Jags partnership. Heitinga will come good. I would love to see Duffy having a game. Wigan is not the right time though.

Wigan aren't a team with huge height. But they've a couple of strong, physical players. Kone is one of them.

Picking Duffy for this game out of the blue doesn't seem like a good idea to me, he is not faster than Heitinga. He could of played against Oldham, that's more of a game he would of suited.

You all sound like Mr Moyes. Worrying about how not to get beat instead of how to win. We should concentrate on attack. A fast start, an early goal... and keep going for a second.

NO retreating into our shell and defending deep after we score first, please.

I would like to see Duffy get a chance, but not in this game. Stick with a player who has got some first team experience under his belt (despite a few mistakes) instead of bringing someone in cold who may not be up to the speed of the game.

It is too much of an important game to bring him in and would put too much pressure on him delivering. Maybe if it were 3rd or 4th round, but this is to get to Wembley. Stick with Heitinga and keep your fingers crossed!

I expect us to win whoever is at the back though and will be furious if we bottle it against what may be a weakened Wigan side (could be just mind games though by Martinez).

Didn't Wigan tear the back out of Heitinga earlier this season and he was hauled off at half time? Doesn't fill me with confidence at all. Why can't Duffy be given a run of games until Jags comes back? If not, what's the point of keeping him?

Ray, Duffy should start on Saturday but unless there another two injuries he won't. Heitinga is a good player whose confidence is shot and has been poor lately. David Moyes is sending out the message that some players can consistently under perform but not be dropped.

Heitanga has no doubt been very poor this season but I still feel he has to start ahead of Duffy. Shane is still untested and I don't think a QF of the FA Cup is the right time to do it, although Johhny does seem to crap himself when up against the more physical style of players.

Paul #029. I don't think it's a case of just worrying about not getting beat. We are talking about Duffy and JH, who are both CBs. Their job is to stop us getting beat first and foremost.

I agree though the best thing we can do is come flying out the traps and get an early goal.

I would still start with JH for this game, although the way Kone ripped him apart earlier this season worries me. Maybe Distin should pick him up instead. He's faster and stronger.

Andy #233, how, in Heitinga's case, is Moyes sending out the message that you can play poorly and not be dropped? He HAS dropped him on several occasions, even hauling him off at half-time at Wigan. He would only be back in the team because of Jag's injury.

As for everyone who thinks Wigan will play a weakened side, my interpretation of Martinez's comments is that he will play an experimental side - not the same thing necessarily. It's like Moyes deciding to go with two up front (as if!) or playing three at the back ... The experimental side that played Huddersfield away did very well. I seem to recall with a very good left winger, whose name I forget, being given a run out.

As others have said, I'd put our strongest side out and let Wigan worry about us. Whether or not that includes Heitinga is not a decision that I would like to make but I think Moyes will eventually go for experience.
