Season › 2022-23 › Opinion › Talking Points End-of-Season Recipe by David Bromwell | 06/03/2023 0 Comments [Jump to last] Yesterday's game clearly ended with the loss of two potential additional points and, although performances have improved following the appointment of Sean Dyche, we are still in a desperate situation, so I would like to put forward my solution. Currently, we have 6 fully fit centre-backs; all 6 are normally included in the match-day squad. In any sport, it is always best to play to your individual or collective strengths. Our playing squad is clearly unbalanced but at centre-back we have numbers and experience which, for the most part, is sitting on the bench. So, although it's not fun to watch, I would advocate playing a back 5 with wingbacks. Using Coleman or Patterson on the right and Mykolenko or McNeil on the left, put Iwobi back in the centre and play two up front from Calvert-Lewin, Gray, Maupay and Simms. The manager would need to be more flexible in the use of substitutes than yesterday, when he clearly left the changes to the end of the game when they had absolutely no benefit to the team. So let's go for it, select our best players; if they get tired, use the substitutes and – whatever the personnel – play two upfront. We all remember the Goodison effect last season – let's reignite it, give us some hope and something to cheer… and you never know what might happen.
