Carabao Cup Rnd 3: Everton 1 - 0 Wolves

Tonight's visitors to the Hill Dickinson Stadium are Wolverhampton Wanderers and there is a big score to settle after they dispatched a poor Blues side at the same stage last season. David Moyes is under immense pressure to show that he has the desire and the ability to deliver for Everton in the next round of the Carabao Cup.

The conundrum, of course, will be how to field a team that will get the required result while managing the confilcting constraints of individual players' match fitness and their needs for minutes in a competition that has for so long not been taken seriously.

No one can forget the dismissive words Moyes spouted when challenged about Everton's poor record under him in cup competitions, and his reply presented it as a choice between cup or league. Nothing could explain better his complete abrogation of responsibility when it comes to setting up his teams to properly compete in this competition.

So... will tonight be any different? It had better be, with a pretty strong team, Tarkowski, Branthwaite and George rested, Dibling finally getting a chance.

Former Everton goalkeepers, Joao Virginia starting and John Ruddy on the bench for the visitors.

First Half

Dewsbury-Hall kicked off and Everton played it around in their own half for the first minute before venturing forward and losing possession.

Dibling had a decent run interrupted, but nothing came of the free-kick.

Wolves got a free-kick that was taken pretty well, curling over the top corner of Pickford's goal. Everton tried to advance but Grealish committed another foul for Wolves, who had dominated the early exchanges.

Grealsih was hacked down by Tchachoua, who got an early yellow card for his poor effort. But Everton utterly failed to uuse the opportunity; Wolves turned it over, and Grealish committed a stupid foul for an early yellow card to him as well.

Everton finally got into the Wolves area after Dibling made a promising run but Hackney could not get a decent connection. Everton worked it around, Mykolenko forcing the first corner, gathered by the Wolves keeper.

Everton worked it around until Grealish put in a nice cross over the head of Barry and just beyond the far post. Grealish drove the Blues forward again but Mykolenko's cross was poor. Hackney tried to do his bit down the right but he was outwitted and fouled his man.

Neave appeared to be shoved over by O'Brien but no real penalty appeal, and Everton looked to build again but Dibling lost possession. Then Barry couldn't keep the ball in. The quality on show so far was frankly abysmal. At least Maitland-Niles had a go ad won another Everton corner.

Dewsbury-Hall but it was headed clear to Mykolenko, his shot blocked. But Everton won another corner, glanced into the side netting by O'Brien.

Grealish drew another typical foul, and he tried a clever ball over the top but Dewsbury-Hall couldn't reach it. A couple of decent Wolves attacks made the Hill Dickinson crowd a little more nervous as Everton were doing very little to impose themselves.

Finally, a great little run in along the byline by Dibling but Barry had come to the near post. After Jimenez took out Dibling, Hackney played a nice through a ball for Barry and it looked very much like the Everton forward was held back a little but he fought off the challenge. But Jimenez had hurt himself fouling Dibling and he had to be replaced by Adam Armstrong.

Tchatchoua tried a long-distance curler, way off target. Everton's build from the back was painfully slow until a long ball forward to Barry but that yeilded nothing. Dibling tried to advance but went backwards. The Blues got in into the area but Hackney couldn't wrap his foot around it.

Grealish got a nice chance to shoot from the dee, set up by Dewsbury-Hall after a great drive forward -- but it was his straight at Virginia with the whole goal to aim at. With 3 minutes added on, Everton were showing few signs of breaking the visitors down, with some really sloppy midfield play to boot.

But finally a great piece of play from Grealish, back to Garner whose cross picked out Barry at the far post, a fine header saved superbly one-handed, close in by Virginia.

But that was an aberration, the truly abysmal quality of the first half encapsulated in a dreadful attempt by O'Brien with the last kick of the half that flew miles over the Wolves goal.

Second Half

A nice run and pass forward by Dibling but the cross did not find Dewsbury-Hall. Everton got forward again, but no one wanted to shoot.

After better build-up work, a great ball from Dewsbury-Hall fizzed through to Barry just sailed right past the Everton centre-forward.

For Wolves, sub Armstrong burst forward and drove a great low cross in that went right through. Chirewa pulled back Dibling but no yellow card. Tchachoua pushed over Grealish, normally also a yellow card. But it was a horribly scrappy game all round.

Neave broke forward, battleing past Mykolenko and played in Armstrong, Pickford pulling off a brilliant, desperate lunging save with his foot. Grealish released Barry but he was easily overpowered by Toti.

Hackney looked to have broken through but he went down to more cries for a penalty. Grealish drew another foul but Keane powered his shot over the bar.

Barrey was finally pulled off, Johnson on in his place just before the hour mark. Grealish played in Garner on the overlap but his cross was very poor, straight to Virginia, who took too long, Everton getting the corner.

Everton were finally playing up; Garner's shot was parried by Virginia, then the ball coming out ot Maitland-Niles who was encouraged to shoot but couldn't find the space, and Wolves survived a better spell by Everton.

A brilliant ball through by Dibling looked to have played in Johnson but he thought a deft touch was better than putting his foot through the ball to lift it over the goalie but Virginia got a leg to it.

Everton tried to play it down the left but it just wasn't working, Dewsbury-Hall stepping on the ball at a crucial moment. Wolves were not giving any quarter, and Everton just lacked the required quality and intensity; Johnson, Grealish and Hackney just not making it happen.

Everton tried to work it around again but it all came to nothing as Hackney played a poor cross through everyone and behind.

Wolves came forward and caused total panic, Moyes deciding on more late changes that took an age to come on. George went on a good run but could only chip his cross to Virginia.

Dibling fought his way forward but horribly sliced his shot. But his next intervention saw a great little pass to Charly Alcaraz (80') who curled his shot around Virginia and into the net. Brilliant finishing that Everton have lacked so much.

At the other end, Everton were at sixes and sevens, Pickford almost spilling a shot from Doyle. Everton kept giving the ball to Dibling, expecting him to do something... but he just stalled and retreated each time, to keep possession as time ticked by.

Pickford with a hospital pass to O'Brien saw a foul called, O'Brien glancing the free-kick behind for a late Wolves corner. But Everton broke through Dewsbury-Hall, Doyle pulling him back: yellow card. Garner wasted the free-kick. George tried to create something, but again Dibling was so slow and easily shepherded out to the corner.

A late Wolves flurry ended what had been a pretty awful game that Everton scrapped through thanks to Charly Alcaraz.

Two goalies AGAIN FFS Moyes put Loney on the bench not gonna need three fucking keepers - strong side though but fuck me Moyes 🙄

Quite a positive team change, if things are not going to plan, a strong bench to change things round a bit.

As always, one of my criticisms of Moyes is his timing of changes, make them early, if plan A is not working, don't leave it till 5 minutes from the final whistle !

Happy to see Hackney getting a game sitting in front of the back four.

Not gonna need Loney either, if there’s a disaster and Pickford gets injured, 2 keepers makes more sense than a kid who’s never going to get on.

Mike, other teams have 2 goalies as subs. Not unusual. If the main goalie gets sent off and the replacement gets injured, then at least there's another back up etc

No don’t go with three goalies one might get injured - he’s got two U21’s another won’t make a difference and gives the lad confidence and the possibility of getting a few minutes

Having 2 keepers on the bench never makes sense. Not when a younger players could get some first team interaction.

At least makes the young players feel they have some pathway to the first team.

They might have no chance if any game time, but neither do 2 keepers. Possibly one, definitely not 2

As we are almost bare bones makes more sense to me to give a few U21s a chance we’ve enough keepers and FOUR in reserve

Let's hope Virginia doesn't have one of those games. Let's hope we don't have one of those games. Wolves make 8 changes.

Manure make 6 changes, Brighton 7 changes and Villa 5 changes. We've made 5 - very modest.

Like most Prem.clubs starting with a "second eleven" is the norm but Everton have almost a full team with the changes only at central defence and Dibling coming in.

Hopefully the attitude is right and they go for the jugular early.

Only complacency will lose us this game.

We need to step up the intensity and just put more balls into box when we have the opportunity. We need to have more dummy runners pulling their defenders out of formation. There is obviously a reluctance to play a long ball up for Barry to contest but, on the odd occasion it happens, someone needs to be busting a gut to be backing him up instead of just allowing them the second ball unopposed.

Dibling is still too reluctant to take on his full back despite getting the best of him a few times so far.

Game is there for the taking but it's not as if we have total control and an early goal in this half looks like an absolute necessity to get Wolves properly disjointed.

Ramp it up from the whistle until the game is beyond them. Come on you Blues!

Didn't agree with much that the commentators said (seemed to be reliant on highlight reels rather than in depth analysis of some of our players) but can't disagree with ‘not entirely convincing but job done' summing up.

As a proven goal threat, Charly Alcaraz should be getting more game time. Not sure what his ‘animated sock puppet' goal celebration was meant to indicate.

Pickford's once pretty reliable distribution has become very ropey this season.

Another clean sheet, with a different centr-back pairing. We score without a centre-forward on the pitch. Dibling MotM in the Stadium. That will do him the world of good.

Grealish has 60 minutes under his belt, that will help with his return to full fitness. Garner getting fitter by the game. Maitland-Niles looking settled at right-back.

Don't think Barry was that bad, he was unlucky with the headed chance. He needs confidence and maybe a little bit of luck.

Yes he's a bit shite, but he's our bit of shite and I hope he can prove us all wrong but feel it's more unlikely. I hope he can prove us all wrong sooner rather than later
Chris James
78 Posted 16/09/2026 at 22:40:13
'Sloppy and sluggish', seriously? I sometimes wonder if people are watching a different game to me!

After a shaky start, I thought we were totally in control of the majority of the game, having 62% possession, spraying it around the box and creating some genuinely decent chances against a team sitting very deep, before we eventually got the goal our 16 shots earned.

Could we have been sharper with the final ball and finish? Absolutely. Did their keeper make some cracking saves? Without doubt. Was it a case of job done? 100%.

I know it's not always popular on here, but a lot of positives for me tonight.

1. We're through to the next round of one trophy we've never won, and a home draw against the barcodes.

2. Dibling had a great game that will have given him a ton of confidence and Moyes a few second thoughts.

3. O'Brien and Keane pairing was solid, the former looked particularly strong (so happy we kept him, surely O'Brien and Branthwaite is the future centre-back pairing?)

4. Grealish got his first start and was creative.

5. Barry continued to get into good positions, even if his touch was a bit off.

6. Alcaraz came on and showed he's a threat off the bench.

7. Garner played another full 90.

8. We got to see Johnson through the middle as a Barry option, albeit for only 35 minutes.

9. Tarkowski and Branthwaite rested ahead of a game we'll want to win at the weekend.

10. Prime Ministers of UK and Canada sat in the crowd!

Would've like to see Graham given a run out, but I suspect that would've needed another goal or two, but aside from that and a few more of the chances dropping in, I don't know what more people could ask for.

Dibling did okay tonight. But why doesn't he use the space down the line more? The few times he did, he looked very good.

He tends to hold it up and pass back or inside. His defensive play was much improved, which will please the manager.
Si Cooper
81 Posted 16/09/2026 at 23:00:27
Chris (78), you are more easily pleased than me. I already posted how the seemingly neutral commentators summed up our performance, which resonated with me, and there were ‘sloppy and sluggish’ elements on display.

We are potentially in a race for players to hit form before injuries (perhaps inevitably) limit our options.

Personally I’m still disappointed Brennan Johnson came on before Charly Alcaraz. I am hopeful Johnson can ultimately find his Forest form but I thought it was asking a lot of him to directly replace Barry as the striking option and it seems to confirm that the manager has a particular reluctance to call on Alcaraz.
Dale Self
82 Posted 16/09/2026 at 23:06:15
Yes, good for Alcaraz and Dibling. We need them both and we have not let them get into rhythm.

Si Cooper
83 Posted 16/09/2026 at 23:06:22
Bill (80), it seems to me he is far more comfortable with being able to use the penalty area to allow him to twist and jink his way past a defender he has just ‘immobilised' rather than a series of foot races.

Confident he's quick enough over 5-10 yards if he gets the drop on the defender, but not when it's 10-15 or more?
Annika Herbert
84 Posted 16/09/2026 at 23:09:01
Chris @ 78, before waxing too lyrical about that performance, maybe you should consider all that's gone before. Then wait a few more games into the season before starting how wonderful we have played.

An unbeaten start to the season is not to be sniffed at, admittedly. But the performances haven't exactly been too exciting. Moyes usual conservatism always raised it's ugly head.

Maybe other people see the game differently, or expect a little more? It doesn't mean they are wrong and you are definitely right. Nor vice versa.

Of the 16 shots you mention, how many were actually on target? Quoting stats doesn't always tell the full story. Nonetheless, I was pleased with the result, but we need to up the performance levels in my opinion.

Chris James
86 Posted 16/09/2026 at 23:15:00
Fair play, Si!

I'm not going to say it was a world class performance, but faced with the relentless waves of tedious negativity on the Live Forum and often here, I think it's worth accentuating the positive and I was being very specific on what I thought worked well.

Whilst my glass is half-full, I will point out we've gone 6 games undefeated: 3 wins, 3 draws and 4 clean sheets. Obviously, I would prefer more of this turned into league points, but I hope we can do that on the weekend.

ps: I will agree the Sky/NOW/WOW commentary was genuinely dreadful though. Inconsistent, inaccurate and wildly uninspiring, played a role in making the game feel less interesting than it was. Shows how good the top commentators are.

Everton were, for the most part, in charge of the game. Barry was wasteful, when he actually controlled the ball. Dibling had a much better showing although was reluctant to take players on. Alcaraz, when he came on, was okay. The rest of the team showed good endeavour.

Why complain about three goalies (two on the bench)? It's not like there are loads of subs to stick there given the size of squad Moyes has. It seems some people just have to find something Moyes has done that they can complain about.

It wasn't the best game but a solid performance from Everton. I suspect all of Everton's games will be similar. It will be a case of careful but solid. Moyes can't tell the players to go all in because he hasn't got the squad to cover for potential injuries or suspensions. Everton are in the next round, so COYB.

Hey Annika, all fair points [for the record we only got 6 shots on target of the 16 vs Wolves 2 from 6, not sure if that tells a different story?].

I've been an Everton fan for 42 years, so I've seen plenty of our football, under many different managers, vast swathes of it have been dour, uninspiring or just plain bad. The game today wasn't top draw, but the control and possession was a nice change of pace from being under the cosh for large swathes of a match, or 'keeping it tight and pinching one'.

I was at Spurs at the weekend, that was much more of a rearguard performance, and though that was more exciting, and had plenty to recommend it (Mykolenko, Btanthwaite and Garner were outstanding), I can't say I found it more enjoyable to watch!

FWIW I don't think I ever said I was definitely right, I was just expressing my viewpoint as an alternative to a more predominantly negative angle that tends to permeate on this site, which I have been coming to since it's early days.

Bill (85), from what I've seen, I don't think he does have any significant pace and power supremacy over most of the full-backs he comes up against but age is on his side in those regards.

He does have ability though. He took one cross-field ball (to my eyes anyway) via shoulder to feet seamlessly in a way few can. Natural gains in strength and pace and an uplift in his confidence could see him delivering fully to his potential.

He'll face tougher opposition, but that was a very assured performance by MotM Dibling; I hope he gets more starts now, and an assist must do his confidence the world of good.

His most important contribution though, was a great tackle to break up a dangerous counter-attack in the second half.

I was also impressed by Hackney, not every pass worked, but he was everywhere on the pitch.

A big 'Thanks' to Scottish Power for digging up the main road to the ground, you could have walked to the ground from Liverpool 1 quicker than the amended bus route.

Also 'Thanks' to Merseyrail, for endless packed trains through the tunnel, with people failing to get on because you pricks can't put enough coaches on.

All in all though, a good win and another home match to come.

Chris (86), I don't bother with the Live Forum partly because there is so much ‘venting' on it but mainly because (for me) it's too much of a distraction from the game itself when trying to pick up on interesting comments and post in response.

However, I'd argue that a proper analysis of the games has to include the negatives and I think there is a tendency to try to plow all of the ‘criticism' under that is also counterproductive.

Challenging people on the particulars of their posts should be what it is all about rather than dismissing opinions out of hand because you don't like their ‘tone'.

Workmanlike is the best description. Not a thrilling watch (and the commentary was awful) but a cup win is a win and that's mostly all that matters.

Well taken goal, not much else remarkable to report other than Dibling does look improved from last season. I thought he was slow if technical but there was a point when he lost the ball, chased and regained possession.

Maybe that was for Moyes's benefit but he looked plenty fast in the chase. Like our striker, I think he just needs to feel better about himself.

I was most impressed with Dibling's passing. The setups to both Johnson and Alcaraz were deft and perfectly weighted. No hesitation.

The dribbling skills are self-evident -- the dance along the end line and the subsequent nutmeg were both fun -- and he has clearly grown physically stronger in his ability to hold the ball against challenges.

But it was the confident passes that caught my eye most.

It may have been just what Moyes ordered. Control the match, don't over-expend energy, give the young ones a chance to grind out a victory, and they did.

Looks like Kieran's conjecture remains accurate, Moyes is at his best when his back is against the wall.

Fuckin Moyes. Yay.

As Mark said, it was a workmanlike performance but we were still miles better than the opposition. Wolves were toothless and did not really test us apart from one chance that Pickford saved well with his legs.

Good to see O'Brien, Keane, Maitland-Niles and Dibling getting the full 90 minutes today. Agree with everyone that Dibling played really well, he created some good openings and also got the assist.

Alan Irvine said in the presser afterwards that Dibling came back this pre-season much more confident and he was impressed how Tyler played today. Hopefully we will be seeing this version of Dibling from now on.

Alcaraz scored simply a wonderful goal just after his substitution. It was great to see our central midfielder getting deep inside their box, receiving a simple pass, turning their centre-back and slotting it in. Please take a note, especially Armstrong, Hackney and Garner, as we need more goals from our midfielders.

Also, Barry was unlucky with his big chance. It was a powerful header and another day it would and should have gone in.

Happy that we are through to the next round... but I felt we made a lot harder work of it than we should have done.

Wolves pretty much handled the few attacks we made, there was too much tippy-tapping sideways and backways passing from us. As if it was the best team in the world we were facing, and we were frightened of making a mistake and losing possession.

I thought, although there is a slight improvement in Barry from last season, he is a very long way off being a proper striker, too much inconsistency and lack of control. We will have to up our game plan for our next visitors in Newcastle!

I thought the game was in waves really.

One minute, we're passing it backwards and forwards across the pitch... then we decide to go at them and looked slick. Our passing and movement has improved enormously this season and with better finishing we would be scoring a lot more goals.

Barry is patently not the answer and I think we should experiment with George, Johnson and/or Alcaraz in that position especially against the teams that don't have big yard dogs as centre-backss.

I agree with those that thought Dibling was MotM, closely followed by Jake O'Brien. But I thought Hackney, Garner and Grealish looked very leggy second half.

It will be interesting to see the line-up for Ipswich.

Hats off to David Moyes, the performances might not be great but his team is well-organised and he is getting results.

Some thoughts on the game:

1) Dibling's passing, link-up play and tracking back has improved hugely -- he is a better player than Johnson in every facet of his game; the only advantage Johnson has is pace.

2) Dewsbury-Hall has not started off the season that well, but I still prefer him as the box-to-box midfielder with Hackney ahead of him.

3) Everton are able to control games more with Grealish in the line-up.

4) Those waxing lyrical about Mykolenko at Spurs, watch this game on rewind.

If we can secure a home win against Ipswich on Saturday, he will go into the international break well-satisfied given what he was handed after the summer disasterclass.

Pete @ 87, you simply cannot write a post without slagging off your fellow Evertonians, can you?

Everyone watches the game. They do it with an objective, critical eye which is not something that could be said about you.

It is stupid to put 2 keepers on the bench as it denies a match-day experience for an U21 player who the club want to integrate into the first team.

Jay @100, that first sentence about the game being in waves reminded me of how I felt watching last night's game. “Comfortably numb”... but at least we got ourselves in the hat for the next game.

If we can dispose of those “Geordie Maggots” and get ourselves into the last eight, then this is usually when a competition really begins to start hotting up.

Getting through is the main thing. They played okay, wasn't great.

Where I was sitting, there's people moaning 2 minutes into the game. Before it's even settled down. I get you should voice your opinion, but why people go just to moan for 90 minutes, I have no idea.

We kept them at arms length mostly. When we moved the ball quicker, you can see it's more effective. Dibling had his best game: if this doesn't lead to more minutes, then I don't know how he can get more time. Needed to attack the huge spaces that were there to run into though. He put in a good shift though. Having Maitland-Niles, a right-back behind him obviously helps and they did well together.

Myko got foward a lot, Grealish helps him get up the pitch, but was caught out a couple of times, switching off. The wait for the subs after they'd been waiting about 10 minutes stripped ready, is baffling, and they made the difference.

All in all not great, but through while resting a few.

Positives: Dibling and Maitland-Niles.
Negatives: Mykolenko.

Through 1-0. We got minutes for all the remaining squad members who had not been involved much.

Jake O'Brien looked good and Keane got more minutes, resting Branthwaite and Tarkowski, even if mentally rested. \

I loved a few of Dibling's actions, that beautiful through pass to Johnson, his driving run through the middle holding the player off. He has done this throughout his youth career, once scoring a hat-trick of identical runs through the middle. Plus the cover run and tackle, he turned on the after burners. Hopefully he gets minutes off the bench and a chance to compete for his place.

Someone said "Come on, Moyes, let's get the 60/30 use of the talent we have to come off the bench."

I was interested to see how Johnson could play the striker role. A few good signs, and it is a different style and problem for the opposition.

Overall I have noticed more of a passing, triangles and overlaps and underlaps style of play this season. This is a big change from the pragmatic sit deep, hoof to lone striker and pick up the pieces. The transition will take time but is a promising chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

Chris @ 88, fair points made there. I didn't mean to be particularly critical of you personally, I was just making the point that we all see the game differently.

No argument over some of the football served up over the last 50-odd years too. Some of it has been excruciating to watch.

But tonight we got the win over Wolves, we remain unbeaten and long may it continue.

I thought the selection was right, and subs were about right too. Pleased Dibling played the full 90. Virginia played well, in a poor team.

Shame we couldn't break the deadlock earlier, as that might have started some subs a bit earlier -- but progression is the key bit.

I see quite a few similarities between Dibling (who got much better as the game went on last night) and Grealish... they both like to hang out wide to receive the ball and tend to stop play more often than not, rather than beating a man on the outside.

They are both technically very good and can split a defence with a good pass. I don't think playing them both on opposite wings at the same time is prudent though as we need a more dynamic winger like George on one side at least.

Also, they both wear ankle socks by the looks of it and I'm surprised neither of them have had a bad shin injury by now.... UTFT!

I think that it's a little unfair to say that it was a sloppy and sluggish performance. Wolves played on the front foot for the first 20 minutes and that made for a competitive game in which the Everton players had to try to counteract and be the more dominant side.

They were able to wrestle control away from Wolves and then the game turned into missed opportunities and chances for Everton. Everton got the job done eventually, but I would have liked to see Graham brought on from the bench to see what potential he has.

We suddenly have three teenagers (virtually) who can go to the very top. And they all seem to get on.

George seemed to look for Dibling last night on more than one occasion. So great to see these kids doing well. When you add these to Garner and Branthwaite, we really could have a super team in a year's time.

I didn't go to the game, I gave my ticket to my 8-year-old Grandson who has been on the waiting list for 3 years.

I watched the highlights and it was good to see Dibling play the full 90 minutes; I think that's a first. Alcaraz made the most of his opportunity and scored a good goal.

I thought Moyes's team selection was spot on and it did highlight that, apart from striker, we have players who can come on and make a difference.

We can criticize our performances so far this season but confidence will be high. If we can beat Ipswich at the weekend, then that can only be described as a very good start to the season.

We then have a fortnight off for internationals, I just hope Tuchel doesn't pick Branthwaite, for no other reason than I don't want him to get injured playing for England which would set us back. Branthwaite will get plenty of England caps and for me, he is a future captain of both club and country.

A friend of mine had WOW tattooed across his arse. You'll have to think about it. It was a great opener to the ladies in the pub. Or maybe it wasn't?

Good game for Dibling; there's deffo a player in there. And he showed he has pace when making that tackle to stop the Wolves break.

But is he a Number 10? Who knows, but he showed some of the best forward passing I've seen in a blue shirt for a while.

For me, I don't care about the performance at all -- the most important thing is that we are in the next round, that is the most important thing at this point.

Because, if you want to win things, sometimes you don't just care about the performance -- just win. Eveton have not won a trophy for so long so who cares about the performance in a cup that we have not won before just getting the results and move to the next round ASAP.

I'll have a go, Davide.

Faster paced attacking. Front-foot football. More numbers joining in when we get to the final third of the pitch. Think "Win!" instead of "avoid defeat".

Knocking a ball around the back four, square and back, will always increase possession % without going anywhere.

Steve #106, I agree with you about the change in the style of play this season. I enjoyed the game last night, and there were more signs that we have some very decent footballers in the club.

Perhaps the greatest problem at the moment is that Barry does not come into that category, so that crucial ability for a front man to hold the ball for a second or two is missing. He retains his place for his ability to score a goal; his general play has improved a little... can he develop further?
Jimmy Carr
119 Posted 17/09/2026 at 10:53:17
Pleased for Alcaraz, I said on another thread he's not great at Number 10 as he gives the ball away too much, but he does have an eye for goal. He knows how to finish.

I think he's another option as a sort of false 9 for Barry, not that I'm sure I know what a false 9 is exactly! I'm not sure David Moyes knows either.

On another note, Dewsbury-Hall already looks a bit tired, I agree he'll be knackered by Xmas at this rate. But Moyes's problem is he's a lynchpin of the team even when he's not playing well. We want Everton to progress in the cups so I understand and agree with his selection, but we have a lot of eggs in that basket at the moment.

A great recovery by Dibling to get that ball back with a terrific tackle that I didn't know he had in him. More of that will get him the backing of the crowd, maybe this is the start of his Everton career.

I only saw the highlights so can't comment too much but the goal saw a good assist and a very good finish... But, even though it was a cup match, it would matter to me if the performance was as bleak as those who did see it thought it was.

Each to their own, one man's meat is another man's poison!

The part of the game I enjoyed watching the most was after we scored. I think we kept the ball for something like 2/3 minutes, and I'm sure it went into almost every area of the pitch during that time without a Wolves player touching it, until they eventually got close enough to break play up by giving away a free kick.

Dibling? If I was anywhere near the squad, I know what I'd be trying to do with Dibling. He is a confidence player, so I'd give him confidence. I'd play him more centrally and I'd tell him that I think it's up to him how good he wants to be.

A short answer to your question, Davide, is by playing with a lot more movement. Going back to Dibling, I'd be telling him to get on the ball at every opportunity and the best way to keep getting on the ball is by constantly moving.

It was noticeable that he seemed to grow in confidence when Grealish and Hackney were both taken off and this is why I have got the opinion that he his a confidence player, something that most technical footballers usually are.

My overall opinion, though, is that the silent owners and the recruitment team have left the players and the manager very short.

The positives were Dibling, who deserves a chance on the right ahead of Johnson, O'Brien showed he's good enough to start beside Branthwaite, and Moyes should be giving Alcaraz more game time, as Dewsbury-Hall has been poor in his last three games.

I know Chris James has mentioned plenty of positives, but let's not forget, Wolves made 9 changes from last weekend in the Championship?
