Midfielder Sean McAllister agrees a new contract

Sean McAllister is the latest fringe player to sign up for a contract extension after his first professional agreement was allowed to expire at the end of last month.

The Northern Ireland midfielder, who is 19, has agreed to a 1-year deal that runs to the end of June 2023 and sets him up well for further development with the Academy Under-21s in next season's Premier League 2.

Last season saw his game time limited, presumably with injuries preventing his full involvement in the Under-23 squad, with him not playing any part in 16 of the 35 games played across all competitions. But he showed some good skills with an eye for goal when things were going his way.

McAllister told the club website: “It feels brilliant to sign this contract.

“Myself and my family are so happy, as I've loved being at Everton ever since I joined three years ago.

“It's such a family-orientated club. Everyone around the place makes you feel so welcome.

“Now I just want to kick on and improve all aspects of my game. I want to create more chances and develop my defensive play.”

Very pleased with this, when I watched him a few times a year or so ago he was a player for the notebook. Michael, I think you must be right about him being injured on and off last season. Seemed to get some game time late on so hopefully he has fully recovered. He’s one who could really push on next season, looking forward to see how he progresses, best of luck Sean.

I agree, Tony. I liked watching him last season when we got to see him play but I can't figure out his poor playing stats.

What I didn't mention was he started only six games in the entire season, being on the bench for the other 13 games, which just seemed a lot for the rather classy player he is.

Michael (2),

Not sure he quite lives up to the billing of "classy". He strikes me more as a no-nonsense type who relies on his strength, physicality and direct running to be effective - and he runs in behind well and is a decent finisher, which are very important strengths. I'd still be hugely surprised to ever see him play for the first team.

You may be right, Andrew… maybe I'm guilty of over-egging any youngster who shows promise.

I was able to find this on the Royal Blue Mersey website:

“It … must have been a big boost for the 19-year-old player from the small town of Randalstown in Northern Ireland.

“I have seen him on many occasions over the past 18 months. Although injuries have hampered his progress this term and indeed, as things stand, his contract expires in the summer he has always impressed me with his energy, stamina and versatility. Right midfield is possibly his strongest position, but he has lined up at left and centre midfield, and even at right back when needed by David Unsworth.

“He has an eye for goal as evidenced by the FA Youth Cup run of 2020-21 and is quite powerfully built so should not find the physicality of the Premier League an issue.”

And some nice comments from Kevin Thelwell in the Echo:

“We are very pleased Sean has signed a new contract. Sean has a lot of the key elements you require as a midfielder – technical ability, energy, composure and a strong work-ethic– and we are looking forward to helping him continue to progress."

I think he suffered from injuries last season, plus he was at an in-between age last season – too old for the U18s and perhaps not ready for the U23s. The fact he has only been offered a one-year contract means he has got to prove himself again from the off.

Going against the flow a bit here, but he's another I wouldn't have in my first selection for the u21s. A good, reliable player but I'd have Stanley Mills ahead of him in that right midfield spot and I don't see McAllister as a full-back or wing-back. Good luck to him though.

These recent re signings like McAllister, Quirk, Higgins, Anderson and Hunt are in contrast to previous seasons when we let a number go. Then we had Price, Whitaker, Butterfield, Welch, Campbell, Mills emerging in the U18s. Perhaps they don't rate the second-year Scholars as highly in terms of their ability to step up to U21s early so have retained experienced players.

Phill, it's a good point about Stan Mills keeping him out of his favoured position. I seem to remember Sean getting some game time on the left of midfield too?

Hopefully the two of them can spur each other on. When people talk about direct routes rather than loan routes to the first team, Stan Mills possibly comes into that category if he continues to improve and impress.

Did anyone find out about Shea Cahill, has he been kept on?

Tony, Shae Cahill is a second year Scholar now so he's got at least a year left in the U18s. He was hit by injuries early last season so didn't feature much. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a guaranteed pro deal as part of his Scholarship agreement.

Good news on retaining a prospect who might have gone through a perfect storm last season that was created by injuries and Rhino's distrust outside of a small group of players.

Fingers crossed that at the coming season, he will be better handled and coached by Tait, who is now operating under the organisational mandate and philosophy set forth by Thelwell.
