Both Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson mentioned their lack of recent action for Everton in interviews while on international duty this week, with the Club captain admitting he won't "throw my toys out the pram" over not being selected by Sean Dyche.
Coleman says he has had a couple of niggles but has been fit for a number of weeks now despite having only made two substitute appearances since his last start against Aston Villa in January.
Patterson, meanwhile, hasn't started a game since the FA Cup defeat to Luton Town at the end of that month and hasn't featured at all since coming on as a late substitute at Fulham three days later.
In the interim, Dyche has preferred Ben Godfrey, a centre-half by trade, as a makeshift right-back but his lack of attacking output has made fans question the wisdom of that decision, particularly as the defensive solidity that has characterised the team since the manager took over has ebbed away in recent fixtures.
“I've been fit for the last 8, 10 weeks I'd say, it's just a case of not being selected – which is fine, that happens," Coleman said after being named the Republic of Ireland's man of the match in their 1-0 friendly defeat to Switzerland last night. "I don't know how long I've been back fit but I've been back fit for a while now.
“It was just good to get over here and get some minutes, and feel like I'm ready to go for the next 10 games of the season.
“You always want to be out there. It's a club thing and you support the lads at all times. I've been there before where I've not been playing and I'm not one of them that's going to throw my toys out of the pram, I'm one of them that supports everyone.
"Ultimately, Everton is the main goal for me, not what's at stake for me individually. It's about the team. We've got 10 games now to go back, stick together as a group and keep working hard as a group.
“We've been there before and we know what it takes, but you've got to have a real understanding that we have to work hard between now and the end of the season.”
For his part, Patterson made similar comments following Scotland's home friendly which they lost by a single goal to Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, the young Everton gave the ball away near his own byline which contributed directly to Conor Bradley's winner and he admitted that this is the most challenging period of his career so far.
"Obviously I’m not playing as much as I would like to play but sometimes that’s just football and I’m not the type of person that will just give up," the former Rangers player said.
“I’ll keep training hard and working hard and try and make sure I give myself the best opportunity to get game time. Obviously I came away here and played Friday night and will hopefully get more game time on Tuesday.”
His international boss, Steve Clarke, was asked after the match at Hampden Park whether he felt Patterson was rusty from not having playbed much football recently.
“Possibly, possibly not enough games," Clarke agreed. “but I thought he did well in the game. He did fantastic to get back in (and retrieve the ball after he had given it away before the goal). He did well and then he picked the wrong option. It happens, if you are not playing.
“But he is a young player who we know will be part of what we are trying to do in the future. He will learn.”

If he runs out of steam or we need to tighten things up maybe bring Godfrey on.

Either use Coleman as right-midfield or as a defensive-midfielder; move Garner out to the right. We need a leader in the middle. Godfrey can tackle and run with pace so right-back for me.
Patterson can come in for Coleman on the right side of midfield. No Harrison. Young should be let go at the end of the season. I hope we do not sign Harrison because he has not showed us much this season.
Next game: Pickford, Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Godfrey, Coleman or Patterson, Onana, McNeil, Garner, Doucouré, Calvert-Lewin.
The Premier League is giving Everton so much crap this season and we face another points deduction in the same season on top of the Premier League not rejecting 777 Partners outright! Unbelievable! mismanagement by the PL!

If he's not the player he was, you have to question why he is on the books. If he is in reasonable shape, you wonder why he's not playing considering the form of the team.

Has Seamus fallen out with Dyche? Looks like it, but if he has, shouldn't Dyche put the club first and pick our leader???

Let's agree to disagree.
12 Posted 27/03/2024 at 22:42:17
For me, professionalism from both.
Seamus knows he's coming to the end but still has a lot to offer. Young Patterson demonstrating ambition and wanting to play. I don't have an issue with either.
My only concern is that we are not talking about our midfield, just our defence?
13 Posted 27/03/2024 at 22:54:10
Shane's right, though, Christy. Seamus isn't very good at crossing the ball. Weakest aspect of his game. Best I can recall he hasn't crossed a ball for a goal, or even a really good headed chance, in at least four years. (Correct me if your memory is better.)
His greatest cross was the Leeds goal. And yes, if he says it was intentional, I believe him 100%.
Start him, Sean.

Out of those 5 matches, Coleman has made 6 crosses.
That's Coleman's stats for this season.

A calculated risk to give him game time, build his confidence, and either be ready to backfill Branthwaite or potentially give him exposure to bring in cash if Dyche doesn't think he's up to it.
Godfrey is not a full-back but has some of the raw material for a decent centre-back but his development has been slowed since joining Everton beyond the initial brief stint under Carlo.
19 Posted 28/03/2024 at 08:18:00
I don't believe Dyche will have a say in transfers.
The owners, current or new, will decide and the manager and DoF will deal with the cards they are dealt and whatever deals they can secure.
If the club decides to sell our £1M investment for £80M, it won't be Dyche's decision.
He just needs to focus on managing the here and now, which includes Branthwaite for at least the rest of this season.
20 Posted 28/03/2024 at 09:04:32
As Danny says, Dyche's job is to manage the next 10 games, picking the best team and tactics from the players he has now, not what he may or may not have in September.
21 Posted 28/03/2024 at 09:24:58
It's a results business and, no matter how difficult our current set of circumstances are, the manager will not survive unless results pick up.
Looking forward to a recharged Everton picking up 3 points on Saturday afternoon.

As for Patterson, he was signed at the same time as Mykolenko and where Mykolenko has improved over the years, sadly Patterson hasn't.
But like all players, you don't get better sitting on the bench and it's quite clear that Dyche prefers Godfrey, Young and Coleman ahead of Patterson.
I think he would benefit from a move, as there seems very little future here for him under Dyche.
23 Posted 28/03/2024 at 10:03:47
I want him in for his for motivation and being a role model for the fight, but also despite his age I still think he has footballing qualities to offer. On the flipside, I don't want him to come in rusty, make a few mistakes and the keyboard warriors jump on his back in a flash, he deserves much more respect than that.
24 Posted 28/03/2024 at 10:48:43
He is 35, and for a player whose game was based on pace as well as having a serious injury, it might just be that he's in his twilight years.
He can still play a part, but maybe not on a regular basis. Although I am sure Seamus thinks he can!!
25 Posted 28/03/2024 at 11:32:12
Most managers will play 3 at the back and one full-back with licence to play as an attacking wingback. This is because many teams do not use 2 wingers like in the old days of open attacking football.
Coleman has been an exceptional player but sadly, like all of us, is not getting any younger and certain attributes are no longer with us.
Paterson is no Seamus and has not yet proven he is Premier League standard but he has time to improve.
26 Posted 28/03/2024 at 11:52:48
27 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:11:36
Godfrey for centre-back??? He cant jump...
28 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:19:00
I digress, but my brother and his wife are about to have a second child.
I've suggested Seamus if it's a boy.
Then we'll have a Daniel, Connor, Sean (Kopite) and Patrick joined by a Seamus who will be blue!!
Seamus O'Neill has a nice ring to it.
29 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:24:59
Patterson should go on loan to a Championship club to belatedly develop and Godfrey should be sold while he still has some value. Unless Dyche has some plans to play 3 centre backs which is the best fit for Godfrey as a wide centre back whose strength is recovery pace and defending the channels.
30 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:32:14
I wouldn't argue over who to play between him and Seamus I'd play the two of them in tandem on the right side with one covering for the other when we attack.
31 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:38:51
Mind you, for me, Dyche has them too narrow anyway, so is there any point to us having wide men?
Both McNeil & Harrison drop back & come inside the majority of the time.

33 Posted 28/03/2024 at 16:32:31
Brian #16, do you have comparable stats for Godfrey and Young?
Andrew #27, correct. The next time I see Godfrey win a contested header will be the first time I've seen Godfrey win a contested header. He has absolutely no Premier League future as a center-back.
However, Brian #22, I've seen in recent weeks why Dyche would choose Godfrey over Coleman (not that I agree with the decision), because Godfrey has shown the pace that Seamus no longer has, and has made some big blocks that Seamus could no longer have reached. If Dyche's only criterion is defense, Godfrey may be a bit better at this point. But he's so useless in attack that I'd still rather see Coleman or Patterson there.
David K #18, I agree with Danny. Dyche's only priority is to keep us up, and he will have zero say over Thelwell's transfer decisions this summer. Ownership and circumstances will dictate what we do in the market.
34 Posted 28/03/2024 at 19:06:23
35 Posted 28/03/2024 at 19:22:08
I admire and still support Dyche but not on this one. It defies any logic.
36 Posted 29/03/2024 at 01:28:14
I have no idea why Dyche gets so hung up on these decisions – it's reminiscent of last season when he stuck doggedly by Keane, then finally played Mina and it got us over the finish line.

"I have been fit for the last 8-10 weeks". Who would doubt him? Utterly outrageous that he hasn't been playing.
He must be a shoo-in for Saturday. If not, all of us will want to know why and in clear words of one syllable. He is a true leader and inspiration. He can cross a ball. He is crucial to our progress.
