Newcastle Utd 0 - 1 Everton

With nothing to play for, having secured 13th place, Everton wrapped up another roller-coaster season in fantastic style on the back of a superb win at Champions League chasing Newcastle Utd, Charly Alcaraz scoring a brilliant headed goal to round off an impressive three-game winning finalé.

Jarrad Branthwaite and Seamus Coleman miss this final-day clash after they both sustained injuries last weekend. Tim Iroegbunam isn’t available either.

Two loan players have spent the final weeks of the season out injured, Orel Managala and Jesper Lindstrom; they seem certain to return to their parent clubs, while it has been confirmed that Abdoulaye Docoure, Ashley Young, Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic will all be leaving Everton, with most of them on the bench.

Charly Alcaraz, Jack Harrison, ]and Michael Keane all return to Everton's starting line-up together with Ashley Young being chosen to play his last Everton game ahead of Nathan Patterson, whose furture with the club hangs in the balance.

For the home side, Alexander Isak has been declared fit to start, with Anthony Gordon set to terrorize Ashley Young down their left wing. Newcastle are looking to win their seventh successive home game in the Premier League. They have won 12 matches at St James’ Park in the top flight this season, their highest tally since the 2002-03 campaign.

The home side got the game going and passed it around until Gordon was easily dispossesd. Everton faailed to break forward and gave the ball back so the Toon could mount their first attack.

Guimaraes went down very easilyunde attention from Alcaraz, Mykolenko heading the free-kick behind for the first corner. Tonali's delivery was shocking and Everton finally got clear but Gueye somehow accused of a foul. From it, Gordon tried a long-range shot that flew over Pickford's bar.

Young was in a tad late, treading on Gordon's foot. But they did nothing with the free-kick. Meanwhile, Ndiaye was fouled in midfield, but Garner played it quickly in completely the woromng directoion.... simply biazrre. Garner then got forward with a chance to cross but ir was terrible, wekll behind Beto to a Newcastle defender.

The home side threatend until Gana stole the ball, Everton going long with Beto then almost creating an opening then Ndiaye having his shot bblocked. Harrison hopeless cross sasailed over Beto.

Good skill from Ndiaye made space bdown the Everton left but Charly Alkcraz made a complete hash of his non-shot, nowhere near good enough. A long ball from Schar to Gordon won a second corner off Harrison for the home side, but Gana ruined their short routine.

A great tackle by Young won the ball back and Beto won a fine corner form Botman, who really was getting tested by the big lad. But the delivery went out at the back post, just overhit by Harrison.

Gordon got forward but his cross from the byeline landed harmlessly on the roof of the Everton net. Everton continued to do a good job breaking up the Newcastle play when they could and moving the ball around reasonably well to deny The Toon, who were getting a bit frustrated after 20 minutes.

But Tonali stole the ball and got a decent cross in that Pickford had to punch away. Beto was fouled, by Botman and Bruno, setting up a nice free-kick opportunity for Everton, Alcaraz trying a shot from a long way out that was easy for Pope.

Another Newcastle attack fizzled out and Everton went upfield, Garner with a long throw followedd bby a tremendus shot that Pope had to get down for and push away. Gana fouled Livramento on the breakaway form the savew, getting a yellow card.

Tonali's free-kick was cleared. The workaround cross was grasped by Pickford. Livramento then got past Harrison and crossed well to Barnes at the back post but the threat was quickly snuffed out.

But Newcastle kept coming forward as Eveton kept resolutely defending, the pattern of the game now well established. and not be until the half-hour mark that Tonali lashed a decent shot toward the corner that pPickford saved well pushed awa but to Isak, his shot blocked behind, and teh corner headed over by Schar.

Gordon ran past a stationary Young and threw himself to the ground, incredibly being given as a free-kick. Tonali's floated free-kick was headed away by O'Brien. EVerton continued to thwart the erstwhile Cham[pions League players, who wer now dominating play but with limited end result, Mykolenko heading Gordon's cross behind.

Tonali's corner came to Botman but he headed it into the ground and Pickford palmed it over. A good corner from Tonali was headed behind by a ombination of Schar and Keane.  The third corner in the sequence saw Pickford save with his foot at the base of the post from Botman. [missed 35'-40']

Newcastle's next corner was again repelled by the Evertion defence, with Newcastle someehow flagged offside. Ndiaye tried to advance down the left but was stalled as Everton continued to frustrate the home side and their supporters.

Newcastel tried another attack which petered out when Barnes could not stop the ball rolling over Everton's goalline. Another Newcastle attack was stalled again as 1 added minute ticked away at the end of a first half that was just what Everton had wanted.

No more for Anthony Gordon, who was not getting too much joy against Young and failed to appear for the second half. Ndiaye galloped in and a Harrison cross seemed to hit a had but not given by VAR. Harrison's cross was deflected off Schar's boot and hit a hand.

Everton were showing plenty of vim and vigour, with The Toons biting their nails as Everton threatened to spoil their end-of-season climax. Alacaraz got forward and looked almost certain to score with is low shot but Pope did brillianlty to get to it and keep it out.

Garner then headed the corner just inches over. Garner tried another long throw; they need a bit more work though. Guimaraes hacked down Gana but only got a word form the referee. Alcaraz won a throw and Gana flighted a great ball to Harrison at the back post, who took it well enough but failed to read the script where it says "Now smash it into the roof of the net"!

An hour gone and it seemed the first nascent attack of the second half from the home side after a really good spelll from Everton, but it was snuffed out. But Livramento got around the back and crossed deep Barnes who could get no power in his far post header.

Barnes delivered a good cross that saw Pickford come out to punch it clear. Ndiaye went down and needed treatment as Trippier came on. Young drew a foul from Barnes as McNeil prepared to come on for Everton.

Gana stole the ball brilliantly again and played it out to Mykolenlko for a simply lovely cross that Alcaraz just planted with a fantastic header that Pope could only gawp at! Brilliant!!!

At the other end, Isak got a chance to shoot but it was only an exhibition opportunity for Pickford to show his command of the goal area with a fine save as the sound of the Everton fans could be heard loud ansd clear.

Newcastke presssed again, Harrison gining  the ball back to Newcastle until it was turned over again as Beto fought with Burn. It became end to end as the intensity of the game increased. O'Brien was called upon to make more than one key clearance.

A Barnes shot was deflected behind for a corner that Isak beyond the far post volleyed high and wide as a foul was called when Harrisn? was thrown to the ground.

Time-wasting by Everton at a throw-in really got the crowd aonnoyed, Young  getting booked. With time running out, Newcastle kept plugging awa, as Man Utd scored at Old Trafford to put Newcatle Utd back into 5th place. Schar lashed a fearsome shot just over the angle.

David Moyes was shown a yellow card, as was Garner. Mykolenko caught Barnes on the breakaway, giving up a dangerous free-kick that Trippier lashed around the angle.

Newcastle tried another cross in, Willock fouling Young. Beto got forwad and it looked easier to score but he curled it past the post! That was his last contribution as Dominic Calvert-Lewin replaced him.

Isak and Scar combined but it went right acorss the face of the Everton goal too far in front of four Newcastle players. Time added on: 6 minutes, as Livramento won a corner that Pickford palmed behind, the next corner cleared to create an almost break but McNeil and Gana just don't have the required pace.

Newcastle were still depsperate to score despite even better news from Old Trafford. Meanwhile, the ball fell to Calvert-Lewin with the goal at his mercy but he somehow found Pope, and then put the rebound hogh over the bar.

At the other snd Schar seemed to have a trenmendos chance, just clipping a defflected cross over he bar. Then a decent stike is pushed behind by Pickford.

Guimaraes with a corner and Osula headed it wide. And the whistle finally goes on a brilliant Everton win.

Newcastle Utd:  Pope; Schar, Botman (63' Trippier), Burn; Murphy, (70' Wilson), Guimaraes, Tonali, Livramento; Barnes, Isak, Gordon (46' Willock).

Subs: Dubravka, Lascelles Krafth, (88' Osula) Longstaff, Miley.

Everton: Pickford, Young, O’Brien, Keane, Mykolenko [Y:81'], Gana [Y:24'], Garner [Y:73'], Harrison, Ndiaye (76' McNeil), Alcaraz (76' Doucoure), Beto (88' Calvert-Lewin).

Subs: Virginia, Begovic, Patterson, Chermiti, Broja, Welch.

Newcastle have to win, if it's a draw, I think they lose that CL place, as Aston Villa will beat Man Utd surely. Under normal circumstances, you'd fancy us to get a draw there...

From their point of view, this is a bloody tricky game. They'll have looked at our away record, they'll be skittish as hell if it's nil-nil at half-time.

You'd just fancy Beto to grab one and the place will be like a library.

What does Moyes see in Harrison?

I wouldn't be surprised if he signed him.

I thought Moyes said Doucoure would be playing from the off?

Harrison and Lindstrom probably get kept because of their age and possible resale value…

Christy, I share your fears.

Maybe those extremely embarrassing photos that Doucoure had of Moyes with a goat have been passed on to headless chicken, Kack Harrison? :-)

I just hope we play to a standard expected from Everton Football Club. No wearing of sandals and thoughts of sand and blue seas.

I remember the great Vialli, when Chelsea beat Bolton on the last day of the season. That result kept us up as we could only draw with Coventry at home – thanks Gareth Farrelly!

Vialla said in his post-match comments, that he told his players they needed to go out and try and win the game. This was for the integrity of the League and it was also a responsibility to Everton.

Too often, players are allowed to go out and perform nowhere near their capabilities in the last game, if it has no consequences for them. I applauded Vialli for his words and his total professionalism. A legend and one footballer and man I will never forget.

So go out there EFC and give it to the Barcodes and don't embarrass yourselves and us by not giving a toss. COYBs.

No surprise with Patterson.

He's not very good and managers don't rate him.

With McNeil carrying a knock, that was pretty much the side I thought it would be. He'll probably get half an hour.

And I'm glad we aren't letting Dom advertise his wares on our dime. Beto deserves his start.

Robert, I quite like Patterson, and to be fair, he has had more than a fair share of injuries. Okay his defensive duties could be better, but that would come with more games played possibly (?). When he has been available, he hasn't been picked, maybe I am giving credit unduly.

If he is to be moved on, how about a return to Rangers as makeweight for Igamane, who we have (allegedly) shown interest in?

Neil Cremin

Christy

Simply provides better cover for back four who by most TW standards is very depleted and inexperienced together.

Alternative of McNeil maybe better going forward but we would be very vulnerable at the back and unlikely to last the game. We do want to win the game even if it is Keane or O'Brien header from a set piece or a Beto breakaway goal. We can only win the game if we don't concede.

Good job there is nothing riding on this game for us. Another reminder of how thin the squad is, especially when it comes to genuine pace.

If we get any kind of positive result, I will have to reconsider my overall assessment of some of the players. Always hope but low expectation for this one. A defiant UTFT!

I think Harrison's work without the ball is excellent. This is important when we often have significantly less than 50% possession away from home.

When we have the ball, he's usually involved as well, he doesn't hide. I don't think it helps playing him on the right when he's left-footed. I also think he's anxious and feels the crowd being on his back.

I still believe he's a decent squad player and we should cut him some slack.

Curious as to what other team people expected?

TW favourites Alcaraz playing; Doucoure not playing; experience of Young vs defensive frailties of Patterson

What changes do you suggest?

We can't be passed for the 13th position so why play or have on the bench players other than a second keeper who won't be here next season? Still, he sees them in training every day which must be better than in an actual game, eh?

It's not as though they'll do a Harry Catterick on him and fine the club for putting out a less than first pick side…

Or as Harry said: "When is a reserve not a reserve?" I suppose when you have a 20-player squad.

Jack 6, great words regarding Vialli, loved him at Sampdoria early '90s when Channel 4 used to show Sunday live games,

As a manager and later pundit, he came across as articulate and knowledgeable and obviously had great integrity.

That's a fair first-half performance. Commentators talking about our resolute defence and Pickford's defiance... we've been a bit better than that haven't we?

In terms of all round play, this might be the best I've seen Beto. Gana is everywhere – so deserving of a new contract. I honestly couldn't pick out a poor performer and we've had some good chances. I'm also only hearing our fans from their spot up in the gods.

The pressure will ratchet up a level in the second half but, if we can continue to frustrate them, then there are chances for us here.

Alan J Thompson
21 Posted 25/05/2025 at 16:53:54
The first 10 or 15 minutes, Newcastle seemed quicker on the attack and got more men forward than we did attacking but then we seemed to rectify that problem. Newcastle though seem to be targeting our right flank and Young.

It seemed noticeable that we play the ball more along the floor when looking for Beto than we ever do when Calvert-Lewin plays but we still play that useless corner beyond the far post, looking for one of our central defenders to head back across the face of goal.

An entertaining half mostly — kept scoreless by good keeping at both ends of the pitch.

Decent first half and we're obviously not just turning up but are putting a decent effort in. Both keepers having work to do.

Villa's goalkeeper has been sent off, so it'll be tough for them to win now.

Ndiaye is such a joy to watch when he goes on his runs, the ball sticks to him like glue and his skill is incredible.

Might still win this, fingers crossed for a good second half — it might get very tense for the Barcodes!

Vialli came to my attention when Liam Brady went out of his way to speak to him as his great friend, when he was relatively unknown during a World Cup. That soon changed.

I don't think Mark Hughes is that dying about him. There were some words between them and Hughes kept looking to get on in a European Cup-Winners Cup final, but was ignored..

This is a cagey game. Everton did just about enough in the first half and Newcastle now are afraid of getting caught out.

Dithering Dave… Dour Davey.

All you doubters, and you know who you are, I hope you're eating your humble pie with a large dollop of cream tonight.

This manager has transformed us, he's nearly trebled Kopite Dyche's tally, some going that! And 5 brilliant away wins at places we wouldn't have got 2 points under Sean kopite Dyche.

But he'll still have his doubters; he's taking us into this new stadium in better shape than any other manager could have.

We owe him big time; he's made me want to go the games again. Thanks, David, and big thanks to the players who have responded.

Brilliant win. I knew we'd beat them. If Calvert-Lewin hadn't been so dopey we'd have got a second.

Well that's Doucoure gone. Young, I'd have kept tbh. Calvert-Lewin a gonner too. McNeil a squad player at best. His legs have gone.

Three or four new quality players and we'll be right up there in the mix next season.

This is not about point scoring but I am curious. I was on the fence when it came to Moyes returning – “You should never go back” was ringing in my ears” – but many on here were extremely vocal in their opposition.

Any shift in perspectives as we now conclude the season? 31 points won since his return which doesn't just make us secure in the Premier League but also makes us attractive to potential signings.

Second half was as entertaining as the first and who said Mykolenko can't cross a ball? As I've said before, if he looks up and sees nobody worth it in the box, he doesn't cross it; this time, we had several and he picked out his man.

The handball shout looked like it should have been a penalty as it struck his hand hardly from point blank range and changed the flight of the ball.

After scoring, we sat back and lost momentum when both Alcaraz and Ndiaye, my MotM, were subbed off, both looking injured. Calvert-Lewin with 4 minutes and added time was a strange sub for me but I suppose Moyes felt we needed an outlet up front.

A good finish to the season and now on to the merry-go-round that is the transfer window before moving to the royal blue Mersey.

First time since the 1988-89 season we won the last 3 games.

Also means we finished with 48 points - which was the same as last season before the corrupt FA got involved. We also scored 3 more than last season and conceded 4 less.

Compared to last season's results, David Moyes got 8 more points in the 19 games he was in charge. Do it again, Davey, and that is top half easy.

Oh a good way to go into the summer with these last few weeks.

Well, under Sean Dyche, we went for a draw and that is what we got, if that. Under David Moyes, we still played well defensively but attacked more, which gave us a much better chance of winning.

Looking forward to some good players joining and next season, converting those draws into wins. Since we can't afford a complete overhaul in one season, I expect that some of the out-of-contract and loan players will be retained for another season.

Forest have shown that you need a good squad to keep up with the big boys. Just having a good team is not sufficient.

I thought that was the best we have played all season and really enjoyed the victory, in fact, it should have been more with some great chances provided but missed.

A great goal by Alcaraz was well deserved with a terrific header earning the points. He will get the MotM with that goal but played well and I won't begrudge him that award but Gana Gueye and Ashley Young had very good games with Pickford making three or four saves that helped in the win.

I could hear our brilliant fans but never got a glimpse of them.

Conor Crooks, you have earned a £5 donation to Cancer Research which I will add to my next donation to them. You had great faith in the Blues expecting them to win at Newcastle but it was no fluke – could have been bigger – and well deserved.

What a brilliant job David Moyes has done since his return to the club. I wasn't too excited when the appointment was made but I did think it was a very sensible move, considering the appalling job the previous bloke (can't bring myself to call him a manager) was doing.

The same set of players have been motivated, encouraged and transformed by Moyes. He has, without doubt, earned the right to be in charge next season.

Hopefully he will be backed up by a few proper summer signings and we can all look forward with a bit of confidence and excitement.

One very happy Blue Nose signing off for another season. Enjoy the break all you Evertonians.

I don't mind putting my hand up and saying I was underwhelmed with Moyes's return. That said, I didn't think there was a queue of candidates either...

I genuinely thought we were going down under Dyche. The team seemed aimless, and worse, didn't look like they gave a shit.

Fair play to Moyes – he turned it around, with a couple of astute loan signings (one of whom we barely got to see sadly), so he deserves to lead us into the new dawn that is HD-BMD-Everton Stadium.

Let's hope somehow he gets some backing in the market without having to sell some of the prospects – the squad needs a major overhaul.

Steve Brown #59 - 100%. Really frustrates me to see the stick Keane gets.

Yes, he's had bad games (who hasn't in the past 'x' years), but massive goals, never publicly complained about being on the fringe, and the occasional great game like today.

Go (it is probably time for both parties) with your head held high, sunshine, and thanks for the effort you always gave.

I always remember Moyes talking about the lesson he learned in his second full season when we were safe, and then standards dropped. I think we finished 17th despite not really being in trouble.

You could have understood the team relaxing after securing safety given what many of them have gone through over the last few years, but the standards never slipped.

Culture is massive. That feels like the biggest improvement Moyes has brought. That was hugely impressive today and gives us a bit of hope that we're going in the right direction. It's been a while since I've felt like that.

Only Alcaraz added to the squad Dyche had. Night and day performances from same players under different managers.

Lots of good performances today, including Young, Keane, Garner, Mykolenko, those that normally slip well under the radar.

Beto is looking significantly improved. From being a menace to defenders earlier in season, he now looks a menace with purpose. His all round game is getting progressively better.

Ndiaye and Alcaraz showing well together in the way we hoped they would. O'Brien, Pickford, Gana all excellent.

Great end to the season, much to build on. Will be interesting to see who stays and who goes.

And thank you for showing pride. Nothing to play for, Newcastle everything to play for, you'd never have known it.

They could've steam-rollered us if we didn't care about the game – but we did. We matched them in every department.

Most Useless Player: Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Sorry, I mean I've tried to hold back but, fuck me — what a dreadful miss... double miss.

Only the goalkeeper to avoid. And he hits it straight at Pope, for fuck's sake.

Pope parries it back to him… surely now… just put it in the net!

Nope! Over she goes. Un-fucking-believable!!! Get him gone.

Phil Roberts
70 Posted 25/05/2025 at 18:52:07
Keane – I would keep him given the choice. Tarkowski, Branthwaite and O'Brien are the 1st choice but, as a back-up, he is fine. Question is: Will that be okay for him?

Also need to remember that, as well as Young, Doucoure, Virginia and Begovic leaving, Holgate's contract is up and so he officially leaves and let us not forget that the obnoxious Neal Maupay finally leaves the club and we get paid for getting rid of him.

And given his messed-up 1-on-1 today, then does that knock another £10k a week off the offer to Calvert-Lewin?

Chris Leyland

Matt Traynor - we only signed Alcaraz in the last window. That was it.

Moyes has turned it round despite losing a number of starters including: Mangala, Lindstrom and more recently his centre back pairing as well as having Ndiaye out for a long period too. It's been a remarkable turnaround.

An excellent performance. Great credit to O'Brien and Michael Keane who hardly put a foot wrong.

As I mentioned on the Live Forum, we don't have to fear anyone next season. There is no great side in the Premier League and since David Moyes came we have shown we can progress and compete with the best.

He has taken what Dyche actually did well (organising a defence) and vastly improved all other areas. With some good signings, there's no reason why we won't see real progress next season.

Well done to all today and for all their efforts since January.

I imagine it's fairly simple, Fred @58.

If they see a piece of crap play from our multi-millionaires… they ignore it or put a nice gloss on it with some fanciful excuse.

If I see a piece of crap play from our multi-millionaires, I call it out — no messing.

The only way this club might ever be great again is if standards across the board — but especially standards of play on the field, where it really, really matters — are drastically, and I mean drastically improved… well, I think even you can probably figure out the rest.

Phil #70, assuming Tarkowski isn't ready for the start of next season, Keane presents an interesting conundrum. Do we look for at least one and maybe two new centre-backs in the summer, or do we keep the known quantity?

I'll say this: if he was auditioning to stay in the last two games, Keane showed really well.

Michael I've been saying that for a few seasons now about Calvert-Lewin. The sentimentalist on this forum derided me but his head's not in the game. I wish him well finding a new club and getting a decent wedge. His YouTube video will be adorned of times long gone.

I didn't see Moyes as our saviour but I hold my hands up and recognise his outstanding achievement since January. He clearly got into the players heads. Well done, Mr Moyes.

Also well done to all our supporters for staying behind this team — especially during the dark days up to January 25. I hope to get over to BMD / The Hill next season, health permitting. I stood on the other famous Hill for years (Croagh Park) and saw great success until I had to retreat to the comfy seats.

Great performance from the blues. Nothing to play for but halted their Champions League parade.

Alcaraz has to replace Doucoure in that role. Keane and Young are worth another year IMHO. And we have to keep hold of Gana… even giving him Doucoure's wages!

Great way to end the season.

Moyes has done a superb job. Far exceeded my expectations. And this was a tough game today against a team who should have been more up for it. He's obviously lifted the mood, lifted a lot of the players, and got us playing much better as a team.

I think a few like Michael Keane now leave with head reasonably high. He's not been too bad when called upon this season and bailed us out a bit too. But no need to be sentimental. Lots of players out there with much more mobility than Keane so we should move on.

A few early signings would be a good lift this important summer. Let's see what TFG are made of. COYB

I did say have a small bet on us at 8.5/1 plus because we had a better chance than that.

Did I think we would win? No, not really, everything appeared to be against us. They were desperate to win and we weren't, we had important players missing and playing on their patch to boot.

So what about who we retain and who we don't now! I think we still need 2 to 4 quality players for next season and that will do us fine.

One of our best displays of the season, I'm made up for everyone who travelled.

In the gentlemen's club where I watched the game, there was plenty of money going on to an “Everton/Palace to win” double bet. I was dubious pre-match, then was hoping they would all cash in after 80 minutes. Unfortunately, most people seemed to be caught up in the moment, losing sight of the ability of the rs to urinate on chips.

As one of those who was initially dubious about the re-appointment of David Moyes, I congratulate him on what he has done since his return to the club.

Great result. Great performance. Great end to the season. Much cause for optimism under Moyes especially if we get this summer right.

A thought for Kevin Thelwell who whilst having to deal with a negative net spend bought in Ndiaye, O'Brien, Alcaraz and Beto (all brilliant today) with almost no money spent on any of them up front.

Michael @69,

I'm not sure what the truth of it is but I cannot believe we have offered Calvert-Lewin a new contract.

At the start of the season, people were vitriolically attacking us for our views on him, and the season has panned out the same as most others — more injury and more pretending to be a capable Premier League footballer.

Thank you, Dominic, for your effort over the last number of years but don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Today was great however, a committed performance where I for one didn't see one coming. A big summer rebuild required with probably 7-8 new faces incoming.

Onwards and upwards, Toffees.

I didn't think Everton stood a chance today, so I was very happy listening to what sounded like a great performance, and just gutted that the travelling blue army never got the icing on the cake with Man Utd beating Villa.

Credit to Moyes, and the biggest thing that I don't think the powers that be will be totally aware of (unless they're educated by some clever football people who have got Everton's best interest at heart) is that, after years of negativity surrounding our football club, the fans have begun to unite, and the players have started to play without pressure for the first time since the crowd was allowed back into the stadium after Covid.

A big summer awaits; if the manager is given some money and can get the recruitment right, then anything is possible next season for a club like Everton.

Our fans are absolutely desperate for success so hopefully the Friedkin's can get behind the manager because he has brought a lot of momentum into the squad.

He went to St James Park today and told me that Everton were simply superb in terms of organisation and executional skill. He was unbelievably impressed.

I watched the game on a stream, I thought that they were superb too but we need to do this without sitting back and taking it for so long even though it's an amazing skill.

Same next year at the RS will be fine though.

Good performance and fantastic result... apart from Newcastle still securing Champions League football! I really dislike that club.

I didn't want Moyes back (and still don't) but credit where credit is due, he's come in and steadied the ship.

There's plenty to be optimistic about if we get the recruitment side of things right this summer. We need major surgery in the wide areas by adding pace and full-backs that attack and overlap. Imagine what a difference a pair like Baines and Coleman in their prime would make to this side with pacey wingers in front of them.

I feel we only have a small core group of players that are good enough to take us to the next level:

Pickford, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, O'Brien, Gueye and Ndiaye.

We need to add much more quality to that group of players as the rest just aren't good enough. Obviously Gueye must be retained at all costs and I'm hopeful Alcaraz's loan will be made permanent.

Maybe McNiel could do a decent job as a Number 10 but not out wide as he lacks pace. Beto looks like he could score double figures if he's our first choice striker... but I'm hoping for an upgrade.

It's going to be a very interesting and important summer to look forward to.

Excellent performance and result. With better quality in the final third, we might have won by three or more goals.

That we started with half the outfield players out of contract or on loan and used two more out of contract from the bench, yet produced such a good performance says much about the motivational ability of Moyes and his staff as well as the professionalism of the players themselves.

Results towards the end of a season can sometimes be misleading but finishing with three consecutive wins sends us into an important summer on a very positive note.

After Onana's decisive performance today at Old Trafford, some on VillaTalk are beginning to voice the fear that in negotiating the fee last year, Everton managed to pull Villa's pants down...

If they keep Gueye, Keane and Calvert-Lewin then that's all good. I just don't want them to be first choice next season, I would rather have them from the bench.

Gueye has been quality so my comment isn't related to his performances – I just want us to get a quality replacement (younger) that can be our lynchpin for years to come.

Immediately to the bar post-Mass with two sons and the Mrs. to watch the second half and have a beer. The first miracle was making more wine after all... We looked very good, and on whole have looked so much better under Moyes. A great result to finish the season.

Dinner tonight is a 10 blue crab crab boil, all of them caught by the Mrs and myself over this Memorial Day weekend in the States. Eating like kings (and a queen), awaiting next season, full of hope.

Great to see Rob and Danny and I noticed John Raftery but was too busy looking for Danny to catch his attention (sorry John!).

Another fabulous away day. It’s funny how you get a feeling about games sometimes.

The skunks seemed very nervous and anxious which got progressively worse the longer the game went on until the PGMOL gave them a lifeline.

We were outstanding today and finish the season with 3 straight wins for the first time since 88-89. The support was once again very loud and full of belief, never heard the home support until Man U scored.

I can see Michael Keane staying. We can't afford a world beater as our 4th choice centre back. At his likely wage demands, he might be the right choice unless he still feels he can play every week at a lower level.

Moyes was a bit coy on signing Charly. He's done well and was very good today. Also seems a good cultural fit with his attitude and effort. But if there's a better option available, then it might be a bit more complex than just signing the guy who is already here out of convenience.

Gana surely will be offered a contract. His energy is exceptional - he might be slowing down but he's still faster than most! The only way he doesn't sign is if he himself decides he wants to do something else with the tail end of his career.

Dom's situation continues to be shrouded in mystery. I'd like him to stay and fight for his place simply because we can't really afford to buy too many Premier League standard players. It's a shame that he missed most of the Moyes period as we never really got to see what he could do in this side when fit.

Miserable bugger or not, you're certainly a blue and the site doesn't work without that.

There was something comic grotesque Neil (137) - it would have been lost on them - in watching nearly 50,000 nor-easterners going all fireworks after being schooled by Moyes with our own Mackem MOM.

Thanks for your support this season Neil and everyone else you mentioned. Did you commiserate with Rob after he lost the FPL ToffeeWeb Cup Final?

It gets even worse with each viewing, but that denied Rogers "goal" is a work of the most profound injustice. Was the League Committee wired up to the ref's whistle? What is being put out by way of explanation is pure balderdash. I suspect that there is no recourse but wouldn't it be nice poetic justice if there was. But Villa would have to convince the North Wharf Road crew who always put their hands over their ears and make loud noises that they would not have lost after going 1-0 up. Don't see it.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to Neil, Rob, Danny, John and the rest of the 3,000.

Agree about Michael Keane Ernie (139).

Great performance. Pope had a superb game for them in goal, and Calvert-Lewin did his best Calvert-Lewin impression. Otherwise we win that game by three or four.

Onto other business: Moyes did the job we needed. Let's back him. Let's back the team. Four months on, every comments section is still peppered with unadulterated worship or gritted teeth acceptance.

The subject has been done to death, people. It's not about him, it's about the club, about the team.

In the last 2 seasons Pickford has kept 25 clean sheets

Overall career for Everton has kept 87 clean sheets and saved 7 penalties in the league

37 clean sheets for England, saving 5 penalties out of 20 in penalty shoot outs for England.

While I was waiting to meet Danny by the away entrance the blues were in good voice singing the JP chant. An older Geordie of a similar vintage to myself (so clearly in his prime…ha!) was going absolutely ballistic issuing all sorts of threats. Even the police segregating the supporters found it highly amusing with one of them quipping “are you planning to take them on all at once or one at a time sir?” Very funny moment which broke the ice and the irate Geordie suddenly realised what a twat he looked and burst out laughing. The JP chant just got louder of course!

Yet another MOM performance today and he played those near 50,000 nor-easterners to a tee (they must have loved hearing the 3,000 sing his new song all the way through the second half).

So much goodwill to take into the summer. I loved that Moyes played to win and not just to test out players, like Patterson and Chermiti. The confidence instilled in the players and supporters by going out as we did helps us far more going into next season and attracting new players than if we had played like shit today. And just the opposite, of course, we looked as good today as any other match this season except maybe when we took apart Forest at their ground.

Beto has taken a step up in his ability to hold on to the ball. Ndiaye continues to shine unlike any player we’ve seen in years. Gana is ageless and invaluable. Alacaraz sure earned the transfer, and if we choose not to sign him, it damn well better be with someone special instead. Keane has earned himself a reasonable 1-2 year contract as a back-up, and Young, too, if he weren’t already gone. No one put a foot wrong today, other than Harrison, Beto and DCL not being able to put the ball in the net.

I didn’t know supporting Everton could feel this good. Especially finishing where we did in the table. Thank you, David Moyes, and up the fucking Toffees.

Nicolas Piñon
172 Posted 26/05/2025 at 04:47:40
Great post Michael!
Just a correction: in the goal, Gana gives the ball to Ndiaye who then offloads to Mykolenko to cross it.
After that masterclass of football, with a clear penalty not given to us, I believe its time now for the owners to show what do they really want to do with our club. There are some players that have to stay: example Alcaraz. And I don't say it because he is Argentine as me, but if he keeps performing that way hes on his way to the national team; hes just 22 and a real character, determination, with important football atributes also.
Id like iriogbunam and Mangala in as well; and if not, something alike, and not the schneiderlin/André Gómez (just technically gifted) sort. IMO We need fighters, and I believe Moyes also thinks that way. We need to rótate Gana.
Thanks Doucoure for your loyal service and the best mate.
We need wingers and fullbacks as well, ashley young leaving. Hope I get it wrong, but Seamus wont play that many much matches as well.
The most important game of next season Starts now; as many, I have the feeling we are moving in the right direction, just keep going on Everton.
In Moyes we trust.
The Hill Dickinson Stadium will be waiting packed around the corner come August.

Neil @118, thank you for the compliment, but I am not befitting of that title. That goes to many others on these pages, in the stands and those of you who get up in the early hours to tune in.

Neil @156, it was boisterous on that concourse as we were doing our stretches with the Newcastle supporters filling past us and getting irritated by the Jordan song.

Rob, unlucky on missing out on the title. Salah? The shame. You should have the league awarded to you and the culprit given a points deduction.

While still buzzing from the performance and result, I sincerely hope that common sense and no sentimentality play a part in recruitment, in not renewing certain contracts.

Gana and Alcaraz are 'musts' Harrison, and DCL = No!

I can see the possible extension to Michael Keane, if other younger targets are not available, being a possibility, but would prefer a younger alternative or possibly Reece Welch promotion if he is considered up to it.

Obviously Patterson is not in any future Moyes plans, I would like to see him return to Rangers and Igamane coming to us in a player plus cash deal, we have (allegedly) been linked with him or a while.

I just hope all pans out in the next few weeks and we can reset and go again from where we have left off !

After what we have been through over the last 4 or 5 seasons (Benitez, points deductions, and 777 etc), to end the season taking 31 points from 39 and winning our last three games is a quite a remarkable achievement.

How wrong I was about the re appointment of David Moyes. It's obvious that he is the catalyst that has brought about this remarkable turn around.

I think we have finally turned the corner and are on our way back. Three good signings during the summer will do I think Right back, right wing, and another midfielder.

Laurie, we desperately need a very good PL striker. We don't have one. Our biggest weakness is up front scoring goals. Our defence is 4th best. We simply have to get a quality starting PL striker and, as you say, someone out wide who is quick and can cross. Agree, right back ten times more
important than left back. But we need a dependable striker, not one who fluffs six one-on-ones mate.

Thank you Dave. I know you accepted my challenge to a shilling bet (that we would win our games without Tarkowski) in the spirit in which it was meant. I also know this was a bet you very much wanted to lose. Top man for upping your donation to Cancer research.

I was amazed when I logged onto sky bet yesterday to see them offer a staggering 9/1 for us to beat what I consider to be a jammy bastard Geordie team. I couldnt resist a fiver on that. So. Yesterday was a great performance and a well earned win in the last game of the season with nothing at stake for our team.
For me it speaks volumes that Moyes took the game seriously unlike the old Moyes who treated me to the worst performance I have ever seen at the old Highbury when our season was done.
It gives me new hope that he HAS learned and changed!
Btw - THAT was an away win at a top four side. Just because it wasn’t against a “traditional” top four doesn’t dilute it. They WERE playing for something. And we beat them.
I’m becoming concerned by my heightening expectations for next season…

Can we stop with the calls to retain Michael Keane. He's been a poor signing throughout his time at Goodison Park. 33 in January, he's done and it's on the club to bring in an under study that's capable of replacing Tarkowski.

Keane's scored a couple of goals, but has cost far more. He's not demonstrated any sort of value with his £25m transfer fee and what £33m plus in wages. And for that embodies everything that that was disastrous of the Moshiri era. With agent fees and everything else, it's probably a £65m outlay - and people wonder why we had financial issues.

I never wanted to sign him in the first place, whilst the contract extension following piss poor performances questions how those involved can be with a Premier league outfit.

What a performance and I think a couple of special mentions first to Michael Keane who had a really good game alongside O,Brien, and though you may be leaving your professionalism shone through and thanks for the special goals you scored. Also Ashley Young a terrific performance again like Michael Keane your professionalism shone through despite yesterday was your last game.

Also a well done to Davie Moyes, who has turned this club around quicker than I could have imagined. I think yesterday highlighted the changes, I could well imagine an Everton team going to a club fighting for a Champions league spot, just going through the motions, but that ethos has gone hopefully. Instead we created the better chances over the 90 minutes and fully deserved the win.
Understandably there will be many still unconvinced that bringing back Moyes was the right decision, but even those opposed to the move have to say the changes are there for all to see. Someone yesterday said if we just had the points since Moyes arrived we would be 6 points clear of relegation.

I don't think anyone can deny that Moyes hasn't done a very good job and deserves some money to strengthen a squad that he has already begun instilling with some very key ingredients, Brian.

To win yesterday was outstanding, and casting my mind back to the games I've watched since Moyes came back, then it was only the Arsenal game that left me feeling flat.

He needs money to bolster his squad (one of the reasons I believe Keane will be offered a new deal). I think it was the Manchester United game that showed us we need a stronger squad if we are going to be able to sustain the intensity levels over a 90-minute game.

I still have some reservations regarding David Moyes. When West Ham beat us under Lampard, in one of the games when we were suddenly getting refereed, and getting a player sent off by Michael Oliver on a regular basis, I thought they were on their knees.

They had two semifinals coming up against Eintracht Frankfurt; speaking to a couple of Hammers fans after the game, I registered my concern for them because I thought Moyes should have been resting players for those two massive games.

"We have been on our knees for a few weeks now," they replied, and my thoughts were that this is exactly where I have always felt Moyes has always gone wrong.

Sure, he won the third cup the next season… but he probably had the costliest assembled and highest paid squad in the competition, so it wasn't honestly that great an achievement imo.

He still won though and hopefully on reflection he might have realised he could have won a bit more if he didn't continuously flog dead horses and sometimes chose the cup competitions over trying to remain consistent in the league.

Winning breeds winning, might be why he has always gone down this route, but when you usually work with a small squad, then sometimes players get tired and need a little rest for the most important games.

That's just my opinion because I think it was absolutely criminal that Moyes, never achieved more with a couple of the teams he had with Everton, during his first spell, with my biggest wish being that he has unfinished business now he has become a much more experienced manager 🤞

Michael Keane is only 32 years old, which is not too old for a centre-back; he should move to a promoted or Championship club where he can average 20-30 games a season rather than the 10-20 games he gets with us (mainly substitute).

He is also on a high salary of £75k a week, which does not represent value for us.

He was great yesterday, so a good game for him to sign-off with.

Martin Mason
195 Posted 26/05/2025 at 11:16:29
The danger now is to set expectations for next season too high initially at least. We've developed a good run since Moyes came but these can be self-perpetuating and come to an end for no obvious reason.

Next season is a new start and we'll be settling in new players, plus we have key older players whose abilities may be lessened. It'd be sad if fans are vocally disappointed if we don't carry on as we are now, at least initially.

Just a defence for Michael Keane, he has been absolutely superb in recent games and for me has never been as bad as some made out — often playing through necessity with bad injuries.

Went to Liverpool One and there was a huge queue outside Liverpool's shop trying to get in. None in Everton's. So I had to go in and show some support. and seek sanctuary for a while. The lads and lasses were quite chipper all things considered.

Irish, Norwegians, Australians, Norwich and a couple of different fares with the local boys coming from Oldham and Wrexham.

I was consistent when talking about their manager. You can’t take the league away from him but I’d be worried if I was a Liverpudlian, because in my near fifty years of watching football, I’ve never seen Liverpool bullied in a cup final, which is exactly what those Geordies did to them not do long ago at Wembley!

The biggest word I took out of your post Phil, was cultists.

They have definitely, above anything else, become a cult, and it’s why they can’t just enjoy winning.

For so many of them, it is about wanting praise and gratification, and it’s why I love to put the cat amongst the pigeons, whenever I talk about football, especially because most of them can only talk about themselves.

They have become that fucking big though, that it must privately annoy a lot of old school Liverpudlians. One Norwegian was telling me yesterday that 1% of their whole population, are fully paid up members of the Liverpool fan club, and this usually allows them to get tickets for at least one game each season.

60,099 x £35 = 2,100,000, and that’s before they have been over and spent money in the club shop, whilst Everton, ran out of beer at half time, in the biggest game at Goodison for years.

The other thing I never got tired of saying yesterday, was that if it pisses down tomorrow then I’m convinced their sixty year old pact with the devil might just be coming to an end. I fuckn wish!!

Obviously not hard enough, Danny. It was actually forecast for heavy rain in Liverpool today, but that seems unlikely at the moment. Don’t even know what time their parade is so hopefully there’s still time for a torrential downpour of biblical proportions to ruin their day.

Enjoyed that, Tony...I just ask "you've supported Lpool since you won what?"

Charley and Ndiaye played well together. Looking forward to see the FINALY play together.

Rob, dance harder!! Do a Beto.

Phil, I don't know if you were there or heard it yesterday, but "There She Goes" ringing down from those stands was something special.

Entitled Tony. You and I and many thousands of others know more about their club than they do.

The beer thing at Goodison was was the only potential sign of trouble on that glorious but equally emotional day.

We need to do better at the new Everton Stadium. We have the setting, and it's our city. Not there's.

I may get slated for this, but to touch on one of your points. I do actually sometimes sympathise with Liverpool supporting friends and family who can't get to the match. I've grown up with them. They don't get a look in. I hope we balance it correctly and don't go down that route too much.

Phil # 207…….mate I go the away games with just told me that last night when he got off the train, and caught the train to Ormskirk, it was full of redshite, and all they talked about was Everton. Obviously he kept quiet. We really do live in their heads. Rent free of course.

The good news is Danny, the rain is getting a bit heavier!

It’s sad Danny, but it’s also come from all their own doing though.

After years of success, their barren years that still produced quite a few cup wins didn’t help them keep hold of their season tickets, to the extent that the rumours are, that they now have well under seven thousand who have actually got a Merseyside postcode?

They have now become such a global football club, and the local fans probably frustrate their owners, because it’s the local fans who are probably helping to keep the price of the tickets down?

Enough about Liverpool, anyway, because although I must have mellowed if I’m not even that bothered if it doesn’t rain on the bastards! But I’m genuinely only interested in Everton, giving us something to celebrate “for ourselves”

Plus DCL, Keane, Holgate and Gueye potentially.

DCL, Keane and Gana futures still to be decided so the nunbers may yet still go up.

Agree Steve, and I also like to see Branthwaite given an extended contract, and not let it run down like the RS did with Arnold. I know JB is tied to the club for another two years, but the longer it goes without him signing an extension, the less I think we will get for him, if he moves on that is. He goes on our terms, not the terms of any potential suitor.
Steve Brown

Rob, I think we should offer JB wage parity with Pickford plus a huge buy out clause that protects our interests.

He is our top asset.

Rob, what concerned me most about keeping the kid was the heavily rumored possibility that Carlo would come in for him. With Carlo now gone from Real Madrid, that's off the table.

And TBH I didn't think he had a fantastic season -- some ups and downs last fall -- so he may not be quite as hot a property on the open market as he was a year ago.

Both those circumstances may make negotiating a contract extension a bit easier, at least if he really wants to stay. Hope so, anyway.

Mike, I agree that this season he’s been nowhere the level he was last season, mainly due to injury, but he’s still produced some excellent performances. Any potential suitors will surely recognise this, and it won’t stop them making bids for him. He’s only 22 years old so will be around for the next twelve years or so, and we’ve got to make sure we do what’s best for us. That may sound selfish, but we all know how clubs work nowadays.

Tony a, I would have sorted a go fund me from the lads with you working yesterday picking some of the tourists up.

We would have covered your expenses in exchange of picking them lot up, then diverting the taxi to Bramley Moore before turfing them out and then telling them it’s only 5 mins walk down the dock road to town :-) and your taxi cannot go any further due to restrictions, 2 blags in one.

Would have paid you double time if it was pissing down and they had to walk from the docks.

Avoiding sports news, media news, Facebook, Twitter the lot today, with just ToffeeWeb, a rerun of Kelly’s Heroes, and a box of maltesers to see me through this darkest wankfest red shite media loving Day.

Up the Toffees.

What is encouraging is that we have made signings recently which have not turned out to be dross in O'Brien, Ndiaye and Alcaraz (if we can hold onto him). Maybe we can carry on the good run.

What we need is a left and right back (assuming Patterson is dead meat). some pacy wide players (this is critical) and yes ideally another CF though that is the hardest. I really think DCL should go. I'd like to understand if Chermiti has any prospects or if Moyes has given up. If the latter then a new striker becomes critical.

Gana must be kept, he as at least another year in him and with Mangala going, who had his moments, another CM would be useful but I guess is the least critical area of all so far.

With all the OOC players going and only Gana and maybe the goalie back up worth keeping (unless Keane would accept a low wage 4th choice position), we might need at least 8 incoming so I foresee another season with a lot of activity in the loan market, cos we can't afford to buy that many, even at relatively modest fees

I do loads of detours past our new stadium, Brian, but most of them are simply just tourists or bucket lister cultists (Phil😂👍) so I end up getting a few tips, by making the ride a bit more enjoyable for them!

The people who come over a lot more very rarely tip me because they generally just want people to tell them how wonderful their team is, and telling lies has never been one of my strongest points!

I had these Cloggies, from Groningen, and when I asked them about one of their players, they told me he his going to Feyenoord, for €5 million.

The reason I am saying this is because I have an old mate who lives in Groningen and when he was over the other week, he was telling his cousin that this kid is definitely worth a punt at this price and these people said the same thing about him yesterday.

Maybe Robert or Sam, might know a little bit more about this player, but the last player from the Dutch league that my old mate spoke so highly of was Suarez.

One of the things that has put me off football, reared its ugly head again yesterday and does absolutely nothing for the people who believe that top level football is simply corrupt, when you see decisions like the one that disallowed Villa’s perfectly good goal.

Thought the same thing watching Alcaraz in highlights. He really reminded me of Tim Cahill, the way he ran through onto Beto’s flick and shot, then the two headers, particularly the goal. His body shape was just like Timmy.

Really like the look of him.

Meet under a statue exceedingly bare

And if you want a football ground, we’ve got one to spare

Colin (183) Sorry for the belated post but thank you very much for your donation to CONCERN especially since you won the bet!

We both enjoyed the day and can enjoy the summer hoping for some decent signings.

Sadly yesterdays incident has taken a lot of that enjoyment out of football and I pray that all those injured get well soon especially the young child and man who came off the worst.

Thanks again Colin.
