Season › 2024-25 › News Match Preview: Everton vs Ipswich Town Michael Kenrick 01/05/2025 54comments | Jump to last The penultimate Premier League game at Goodison Park against already relegated Ipswich Town is set to be a celebratory bonanza for Supporters Day, with the 1878 Group pulling out all the stops to memorialise the Grand Old Lady for the fans especially as she nears the end. A fantastic display of huge banners on all four sides of the old ground, plus an unprecedented ticker-tape cascade from the Top Balcony of the Main Stand, are among a range of displays planned to crystalize the memories before a more sombre and reflective mood is anticipated for the final game in a fortnight's time. This is the first meeting between the two on Merseyside in over 20 years, and it may well be the last for the foreseeable future, after Ipswich had their relegation confirmed last weekend. But it comes at a time when Everton's results are approaching relegation form after the ultimate demise of David Moyes's "new manager bounce" that he finally admitted last week had saved them from dreaded drop at the worst possible time in their long history. Moyes's men have now won just one of their last nine Premier League matches and, after losing to Manchester City in their previous game at Goodison, with the boss keen to avoid setting an unwanted trend of three losses in a row. Everton will have Armando Broja back after he was ineligible against his parent club last weekend, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also returned to full training after a lengthy layoff. James Tarkowski's season is over after he sustained a hamstring injury against Man City, and following Michael Keane's horror show off the bench, Jake O'Brien was moved into a central role, after impressing at right-back recently. Orel Mangala and Jesper Lindstrom have most likely played their last games for the club, while Dwight McNeil is being eased back into first-team action after knee surgery earlier this year, and could start on the bench again. Ipswich could be without as many as 11 players for this trip to Merseyside, with Johnson joining fellow full-back Leif Davis in being suspended after his red card a week ago. Former Everton youth graduate Nathan Broadhead is set to miss out with a hamstring injury, and the same issue will keep Conor Townsend and Axel Tuanzebe out at the back. Kalvin Phillips is also set to miss out, while attacking trio Jaden Philogene, Wes Burns and Sammie Szmodics are also struggling with injury at present. David Moyes's pre-match press conference is scheduled for 1:30 pm on Friday, 2 May 2025 — see link below. Disclaimer () Danny O'Neill 1 Posted 02/05/2025 at 13:14:02 No excuses. Go and win. One win and 3 defeats in the last 6. With nothing to play for, just not good enough. It's match day. Time to get positive. Ian Bennett 2 Posted 02/05/2025 at 13:22:29 West ham - homeLiverpool - awayArsenal - homeForest - awayCity - homeChelsea - away5 out of 18. How many were you expecting, Danny? If we drew all 6, we'd have a point more.Personally, think the points and performances have been okay. A number of times we've had key players out. Danny O'Neill 3 Posted 02/05/2025 at 13:28:01 I don't care who we're playing or have played, Ian. 5 from the last 18 is not a good return. And, although subjective, the performances haven't been great. Maybe with the exception of Forest and at Anfield. Tony Abrahams 4 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:08:27 West Ham (H), I was bored stiff.Liverpool (A), I was very impressed with our first-half display.Arsenal (H), I was both bored stiff and extremely frustrated that we didn't try and ruffle the feathers of an Arsenal team, who looked like they had their eyes on their next fixture.Forest (A), I never watched but it was a very good result and has possibly helped to derail their season.Man City (H), I never watched but it sounded like we had played well until we brought on inadequate subs, and they have the resources to do the complete opposite.Chelsea (A), I was listening on the radio but turned it off because it just felt like another of those games where Everton never had the guile, skill or inclination to get after a decent Chelsea team, although I heard this changed once Moyes made some changes. You can't expect great football out of this squad; this is why we are facing our most important summer in years. Although I'm looking forward to going to Goodison tomorrow, I'm genuinely more excited about seeing what the 1878 Group have been planning for a while now, than the actual football. This can't be right, but it's just me being honest, such is the lack of creativity in our squad. Ian Bennett 5 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:17:17 There's got to be context – who and where you're playing, in my opinion. If there isn't, we should be targeting 80-90 points a season by beating the good and the shite. I don't think that's on anyone's expectation list.Would you class those 5 points as better than the Dyche record of 5 points covering the below, say? Bournemouth (H)Aston Villa (A)Southampton (H)Leicester (A)Palace (H)Newcastle (H)I personally would, despite the similar impact on the league table. I look at Moyes's 6 and think that's not too far off what is reasonable with this squad. I look at Dyche's and think that's a good 7+ points dropped, how are we staying in the league when we are performing so badly against sides you'd expect to do better against.Defeatist perhap. And yes, the defeats hurt whether they're big or little! Danny O'Neill 6 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:30:49 Ian, I apologise if my expectations of Everton are too high, but I won't change them. Never have, never will. It wasn't long ago I was being told we were were 5th or 6th in the form table based on a selection of games. It would be interesting to see where we sit now after the last 6.Anyway, let's bring the points home this weekend. Liam Mogan 7 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:41:40 Got to go out and play on the front foor in the last 2 games against relegated sides.Caution be damned and give us something to remember. Ernie Baywood 8 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:41:52 I believe we're 14th on last 6 form... but that obviously includes 5 of the top 6. It's not really a reasonable period to judge. Two tough away games and two games at home that we should win if we've got anything about us. Let's be honest, it's really just about the Old Lady now. Has been since the derby. Ian Bennett 9 Posted 02/05/2025 at 14:44:59 Amen Paul Hewitt 10 Posted 02/05/2025 at 15:10:37 Moyes has got the best anyone could from a very poor squad. I really don't think another manager would have got more. Let's judge Moyes next season. John Raftery 11 Posted 02/05/2025 at 15:53:48 I am hoping for a thumping win tomorrow. We created a load of chances when we beat Ipswich 2-0 in October. At the least I would expect us to match that score-line tomorrow. Generally our team is not prolific in front of goal. Ten of our 34 league goals have come against two teams, Wolves and Leicester. Ipswich have been only marginally worse than us in attack with 33 goals scored, 12 of which were scored by one player, Delap. The main difference between us of course is that they have conceded 74 goals. Let's hope we can make that substantially worse tomorrow. Christy Ring 12 Posted 02/05/2025 at 15:54:34 Wasnt it a bit of class again from Seamus, who walked in unexpectedly and met and thanked the 1878 Class, a true Evertonian. Danny O'Neill 14 Posted 02/05/2025 at 17:24:04 Mike, it's going to be emotional. The place that holds so many memories to all of us. She is special, but we should have redeveloped 30 years ago or moved. She will get the send-off she deserves before the Grand Old Lady hands the baton to the new kid on the dock.We will make memories there and only ever be 2 miles away. John Raftery 15 Posted 02/05/2025 at 17:33:34 Danny (14), Your post prompted a thought: If the ‘Grand Old Lady' could speak, what advice would she give to the new kid on the block?! Liam Mogan 16 Posted 02/05/2025 at 17:35:25 Don't let your pipes freeze in December. Kunal Desai 17 Posted 02/05/2025 at 18:27:46 I think what's frustrating is, if Moyes was in charge for the entire season, we'd be in that top half. Brighton at home, most certainly Bournemouth at home after being 2-0 up and Southampton away would have yielded us at least another 5 more points.Anyway, finish the season strongly. This is the last 3 pm kick-off at Goodison. 🥲 Danny O'Neill 18 Posted 02/05/2025 at 19:10:24 John, tough question.I will probably have to refer to my Grandfather."I've had my day, yours is just beginning. You are the future. Make me proud". Raymond Fox 19 Posted 02/05/2025 at 19:42:17 The betting is approximately: 4/9 Everton; 11/2 Ipswich; 13/5 the Draw.I think we will probably win but I don't think we are a 4/9 shot.We don't score enough goals to be a good thing to beat anyone. Paul Ferry 20 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:01:35 Liam Morgan 7: Got to go out and play on the front foor in the last 2 games against relegated sides. Caution be damned and give us something to remember. A brilliant thundering rally call Liam (or should I say Henry V @ Agincourt). Fucking tears streaming down my cheeks. I feel like a real motherfucker front-footer sir. We can fucking do this Liam/Harry. Throw caution to the wind. Don't put Ndiaye and Charly on the pitch at the same time. "He that shall live this day, and see old age,Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,And say ‘To-morrow is 3 May'.Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars. And say ‘These wounds I had on 3 May.'0-0 COYB! Rob Halligan 21 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:05:21 Looks like there's only about 20k at the Emptyhad tonight. Why they are building an extension, god knows? Tony Abrahams 22 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:11:01 I could imagine the Old Lady telling the new kid on the dock that the last 30 years have been fucking shite. You now have Evertonians who admit to being frustrated when Everton don't get in the top half.I know you didn't mean it exactly like that, Kunal, but it does explain how the standards have been lowered and it's about time expectations started rising again, mate. Otherwise, what exactly is the point? Paul Ferry 23 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:11:23 Thought the same myself, Rob. Empty Wembley was no accident. 15,000 hard core, 10,000 fair-weather, 25,000 plastics and tourists, and 22 fucking thick skunks who turned up at the wrong match. James Fletcher 24 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:12:51 This will be my first Everton home game since Chelsea visited in 2006.I'm really hoping for a good win! Liam Mogan 25 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:14:03 Thats not all, Paul, 20. There's going to be blue confetti at the match tomorrow. 'Don't throw it until the players come out'Woo-hoo. Can't wait! It'll be like Argentina 1978 but without the military junta (although Reform have made significant gains in the local elections overnight - viva la populism). Liam Mogan 27 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:26:15 Back to football (or 'togger' as someone called it here the other day. Think they were from Runcorn). We best win tomorrow and I'll be cheering them on from my £90 in a presentation box, 50-year-old wooden seat. COYB Paul Hewitt 28 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:30:26 Man City fans aren't going to games because they are fed up of increased ticket prices. At least they are trying to do something. Other fans moan but still go the match. Paul Hewitt 29 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:31:31 Do something. Billy Shears 30 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:32:43 It wouldn't surprise me if it ended as a draw!2-2 methinks...prove me wrong please Blue Boys? Paul Ferry 31 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:38:20 That's not true PH. The Ethiad has always had empties, always. So, noble protest against prices? Nah. In fact, the main gripe today is about not enough new season tickets.I'm glad Kevin De Bruyne scored (not least coz he's in my FL team). Paul Hewitt 32 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:40:06 They didn't go Wembley because of the cost. I agree with them. Paul Ferry 33 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:43:05 You know that for sure PH. Every last one of them? Nah. Though they might use that as an excuse. Always been a club with big hard-core and plazzy shite. Paul Ferry 34 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:44:54 Good to see Torquay DOF Neil Warnock there. Clearly on a scouting mission. Paul Hewitt 35 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:45:02 Just what there fans say. I don't know why you think not going games because it's to expensive is so wrong? Paul Ferry 36 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:48:11 Never said that once PH. Footy is pricing out good people from working classes for the most part. I disagree that it's the main reason is all. Rob Halligan 37 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:51:42 Wow Paul H…….you must know an awful lot of Man City fans! Paul Hewitt 38 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:53:43 The city ground looks pretty full to me Paul Ferry 39 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:55:01 Are Forest playing? Paul Hewitt 40 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:57:35 I've just put the game on to see this empty ground that I've heard about. It's full more or less. James Fletcher 41 Posted 02/05/2025 at 20:59:16 @Paul 40 it was a protest about ticket pricing for the first 6 minutes Tony Abrahams 42 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:02:07 I remember City fans getting stick on talksport for not selling out in the champions league and I definitely sided with the working class supporters from Manchester. The price of match tickets nowadays makes me feel that neither Liverpool nor Manchester United would sell out on a regular basis, if they didnt have so many day trippers from all over the world.I might be wrong but football has become such an expensive sport to follow nowadays, and if you listen to some reports coming out of Anfield and Old Trafford, (Ive seen a WhatsApp labelling Everton, doing something similar recently) some clubs do seem to becoming as bad as the touts, when it comes to the reselling of seats that have been reclaimed from season ticket holders who cant attend any particular game Paul Hewitt 43 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:02:24 Correct James. Some people think that wrong. Paul Ferry 44 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:05:17 City Ground PH? Your accuracy is never to be. doubted. Paul Hewitt 45 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:07:22 Etihad Michael Coville 46 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:10:45 Well I for one have been at my beloved Goodison Park when we have won the league. The place rocked. I was also at Wembley in 1966 and 1995 when we won the cup. We won trophies with teams that were good defensively but also played attractive football, maybe not perfect but much better than we have see for the last 20 plus years. I want the new home to rock like it did when we had 70,000 plus supporters, I want us to continue to have a good defense but combined with attacking midfielders and center-forwards who can score but most importantly a team that play attractive football that we all can be proud to watch and support. If that can be achieved the trophies will follow. Over to you David! Colin Glassar 47 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:11:17 Leeds charging £400 quid for a special edition (promotion) scarf? Thats sick, so no wonder a good proportion (dont ask) of “fans” are football tourists here days.Emptyhad still looks quite bare.Last trip to The Old Lady tomorrow. Some great memories there on the street end, but time to move on.2-0 home win. Paul Ferry 48 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:13:37 Have a great day Colin. Take some tissues. George Cumiskey 49 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:40:50 Let's hope Moyes is brave enough to play Niadye and Alcarez together tomorrow against a relegated side. Jeff Armstrong 50 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:49:44 Colin Glasser your a really good blue, enjoy tomorrow, UTFT Colin Glassar 51 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:57:13 Cheers lads. Time for bed. Early start tomorrow. Jeff Armstrong 52 Posted 02/05/2025 at 21:59:15 Last ever 3 pm kick off tomorrow, the Saturday routine going to Goodison ends for everyone in a few hours, the excitement at waking up on a Saturday morning and realising its not work today, but its a few pints and a home game at Goodison Park, the smell of the Police horses on Goodison Road, the queues outside the chippies and the Winslow, St Lukes where everyone chooses to meet at the gates, the fan zone with the best pies in the Premier League ( Homebake) the bustle of Bullens Rd and Gwladys street as you make your way to your turnstile, the final whistle at 4.55 on a Saturday, never to be heard again at Goodison Park. Neil Copeland 53 Posted 02/05/2025 at 22:05:05 Colin G, enjoy the game tomorrow mate Andrew Merrick 54 Posted 02/05/2025 at 22:36:28 Time and tide wait for no man But a short stroll down to the dock may well put a bit of wind in your sail..Splice the main brace and get on board, we set sail into the future...There will be much emotion leaving the old lady, teary eyes, hand shakes, back slapping, songs and stories will add to our great history, and if you know your history, and you were chosen, you will be born again, into the great blue yonder we go.... Ernie Baywood 55 Posted 02/05/2025 at 23:34:16 City always had decent support. I don't doubt that's been diluted now.But I wouldn't call their hardcore plastic just because they can't afford to continue to travel both the continent and the country. There are pretty hard limits to supporting your club - the bank balance is a big one. Ernie Baywood 56 Posted 02/05/2025 at 23:37:16 I hadn't thought of that, Jeff. One of many 'lasts' we've been counting down. It is really starting to hit home. Can't help but feel a bit robbed that my own personal 'last' was under Dyche. But it was never really about the result or the performance for me.
