Lots of clickbait sites are picking up on the claim that Everton are going to open talks on a new contract for Jordan Pickford, whose current deal runs through June 2027. The intention, they say, is to give him a deal that will keep him at the club "for the rest of his career".
The claim was previously made back in July but then died away with focus shifting to the transfer window. Nothing will be announced until the talks are concluded and the deal is either signed or rejected.
The Echo states, "His loyalty to Everton has never been in doubt, with the player understood to be content with life in the North West and grateful for the platform the Blues gave him after paying £30M to sign him from his boyhood club Sunderland.
While formal talks are yet to begin, the player is understood to be open to the idea of penning a long-term deal on the right terms."
Meanwhile, Paul Joyce of The Times also reports, "The discussions will reflect the status of Pickford, 31, as one of the most important figures in the squad. He has two years remaining on his existing deal and would be likely to commit to Everton until his mid-thirties should an agreement be reached as expected.
"The futures of James Tarkowski, James Garner and Vitalii Mykolenko will also come under review, with all three having entered the final 12 months of their contracts."

Glad you mentioned the other 3, Michael, all need looking at. This does not excuse the lack of new full-back(s) coming in, but in mitigation, this window has been positive.

Will Patterson still be here? Coleman can't be given a new contract, Keane at around 34, and Tarkowski.
I still find it strange, and irresponsible, not to have brought in a right-back or at least a utility player. (Do they still make those?) We seem to be on a treadmill of players coming and going, possibly the result of a very poor academy set-up.

Assuming limited resources, would you prefer Alcaraz in the squad and O'Brien at right-back, Paul? Or a right-back for £15M and no Alcaraz?
I suspect it was a straight choice that the former produces a better output than the latter.
There's nothing to suggest we had money left for a right-back, given Tete was being looked at for a free.

I've posted more than once about the right-back, so I am perhaps guilty of annoying you. I agree that we should probably move on as the window has gone, but in answer to your question...
I'd have much rather had a right-back than Alcaraz made permanent (assuming we'd still have signed Grealish and Dibling).

Ian #6, I'm with you. I believe the club handled the right back situation with wisdom and professionalism by not buying some mediocre placeholder just to fill the spot, somebody we'd be stuck having to sell when it was time to bring in a real game-changer. I am convinced the four guys we have can adequately handle the position until we find our next Dumfries (now that we can afford one).
And considering we were trying to fill about ten open squad positions and got nine of 'em done, I think we had a hell of a good window.

The impact of Alcaraz and O'Brien, vs a right-back and O'Brien on the bench is marginal in my view. Out of the two Alcaraz and O'Brien shades it for me.
Certainly I don't think Tete would be making a massive difference over O'Brien. The Blues have got good results with O'Brien at right back.

Alcaraz is yet to convince me, so I'd rather have better competition at right-back. Just my view. Not for a minute suggesting the window hasn't been good (I'm feeling optimistic!), and my argument hinges on an upgrade being both available and affordable.

I expect it will be another busy summer next year especially having to construct our backline, bringing in a Number 6 and another first team striker as well as permanent deals for Grealish and Röhl.

I was hiking up the Longji Rice Terrace in China when I saw a guy in an Everton Shirt on him coming down. Obviously I shouted up the Toffees. He said he was from Sweden and he was very optimistic about new season.
Toffees are everywhere.

A new contract is what he's earned - end of.
And regarding his so-called errors I'm old enough to have eulogised Westy, Wee-Georgy, Nev, Martyn, Howard and all, in their showings for us but I can assure you that all of them occasionally made a howler - but none of them played as long as Jordan has had to with such a lacking squad around him
Hopefully this season for once we can actually enjoy some football from our squad and maybe surprise a few!

Looking at the stories out there, it appears that Paul Joyce (The Times), Vinny O'Connor (Sky Sports), and Dominic King (Daily Mail) broke this at the exact same time — 12:00 noon — before the clickbait sites got busy glomming onto it and spinning it around.
It just bugs me that (a) we've heard it before this summer and there was no truth in it that time because nothing transpired; (b) it has zero consequence until a deal is actually done... or not.
I suppose it's just the modern plugged-in world where sources compete to be the first with "breaking news". But it's just not news really. At this point, there is nothing.
