James Garner praised Adam Aznou for his vital contribution after coming on from the bench late in the FA Cup game against Sunderland.

The young left-back, making his Everton debut after signing from Bayern Munich last summer, won a penalty that was converted by Garner to force extra time at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Aznou, who hadn’t seen first-team action since arriving at the club, came off the bench in the 86th minute to make an instant impact that kept the Toffees in the third-round game, even though they went on to lose in the penalty shootout.

“That's what we need, that's what we want,” Garner told evertontv.

“So, I'm hoping he can get a few more minutes now and kick on and I'm hoping the rest of the lads can as well because we need them.

“When we do finally get the [absent players] back and we do have a full squad, we need everyone to step up because we're going into a vital part of the season now – probably on a little bit of a of a bad patch at the moment.

“So, we need to get out of that as fast as we can. And we need all the lads to step up now. We need people to – when they do get the chance – to take the chance, and I think Adam was very good when he came on.”

Another player who stood out in that game for the Blues was Harrison Armstrong. The Everton academy graduate was recalled from his loan spell at Preston North End to help out with the depleted squad.

The 18-year-old was on the pitch for 120 minutes, didn’t shy away from commitment and his technical abilities stand out even when compared to many of his senior teammates.

The impressive youngster’s reintroduction to the senior side has “added a lot” says Garner, who continued: “Yeah, Harrison's a good lad. I've known him for a year or two now and he takes on information.

“And I always knew that he'd that he would eventually make his way into the team. You can see the quality that he's got.

“You know, he's still so young, but he plays very mature. So, yeah, I know he's added a lot and I'm glad to have him back.”
