Everton’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United was plainly a game of two halves.
The first period saw the visitors run rings around the Toffees, and they will be gutted they found the back of the net just once.
But David Moyes reacted to his side's dismal first 45 minutes with two substitutions and a tweak in formation that saw Everton regain control and eventually an equaliser through Thierno Barry.
With the introduction of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jarrad Branthwaite, who replaced Dwight McNeil and Harrison Armstrong, Moyes shifted his side to a three-at-the-back approach, which helped the Blues become more comfortable in possession.
The tweak from the manager emphasised how much Everton have missed Branthwaite, and on top of his astute defensive skills, the 23-year-old is a crucial cog to the Toffees’ attacking play.
A naturally left-footed centre-back is always beneficial to the balance of a football team, but when you have a player who is as accurate as Branthwaite, it also opens new avenues of attack through cutting-edge passes that can split opposing defences.
Should the England international maintain his fitness for the remainder of the season, he will be a key factor to Everton’s success at both ends of the pitch.
With Branthwaite joining the back three, the change from Moyes pushed Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko up the wings. Both functioned as wing-backs.
The pair did not manage to create much threat for the Blues, but they did face a very stubborn Leeds defence, who were firmly camped in their own half.
If wing-backs are to be used again, this would create the perfect conditions for Adam Aznou to gain Premier League experience.
Aznou has just one senior appearance this season. In his sole cameo, during Everton’s FA Cup defeat to Sunderland, the Moroccan showed he is a handful in the attacking third.
It seems clear that Moyes prefers Mykolenko over Aznou, and this is unlikely to change over the course of the season, but by employing wing-backs, the 19-year-old could find himself clocking more Premier League minutes.
If Branthwaite manages to build consistent playing time, this could give the young left-back a chance to demonstrate his talents in the league, while playing with the reassurance of a skilful left-footed centre back to help with any defensive work.
The draw against Leeds was two points dropped, but it was at least refreshing to see Moyes tweak his tactics and make changes at half-time. The change clearly rejuvenated the team and earned them a deserved draw - which seemed unlikely after the first 45 minutes.
Whether the Scotsman chooses to use these tactics again remains to be seen, but seeing a new attacking approach is promising.

Actually, could we have the names of the editorial team? That should be a natural aspect of running this site. But where on the site can we find. this?
MK seems to have gone AWOL.
Who is in the editorial 'team'?
You need to tell us.

Not sure if Moyes has ever played three at the back but I do know him and coaching staff need to do a lot more in training practicing some new tactics including corners where they have kept playing the same routine Dyche used— no variation whatsoever and dont mention throw ins- —a big % go straight to the opposition, maybe you cant teach an old dog new tricks with Moyes being the old dog, no disrespect intended there.

9 Posted 30/01/2026 at 10:36:38
Oh don't get me started on corners, as you say its the same as when Dyche was here which is mostly a ball to the back post. Against Leeds we had 6" 6 O,Brien, 6"5 Branthwaite, 6" 4 Barry plus 6"0 Tarkowski. Yet how many clear headers do we win very few. I watch the other lot on MOTD and seems VVD gets his head on about 30% of their corners and scores or makes chances, yet he is not as tall as O,Brien or Branthwaite.
We never try a flick on from the near post, and defensively why don't teams have players on the posts anymore, if you see most goals from corners most would be stopped if you had players on each post. Also means the goalkeeper has less of the goal to cover, or he can actually try and catch or punch it clear knowing he has 2 men on the line if he misses the ball.
10 Posted 30/01/2026 at 10:53:46
We should invest in a specialist set-piece coach to improve the attack and defence. The variety of our offensive set-pieces is terrible.
As for our defensive set-up, we are a big team who concede goals easily to free-kicks, corners and long throws - teams just block off our tall players and we look befuddled. Spurs, Newcastle and Brentford took full advantage of our weakness in this year.

All we need now is Ndiaye getting crocked

Can we afford to lessen the squad numbers?
14 Posted 30/01/2026 at 11:33:24
New stadium, new owners but a film we've seen too many times before lol.
This is why you need a big squad and three players for every position

Would you like all prospective TW writers to run their credentials past you before contributing?
18 Posted 30/01/2026 at 14:21:39
He wont divert from his safety first football.
If he did I guarantee it would be 5-3-2 rather than 3-5-2 for the majority of the game
19 Posted 30/01/2026 at 14:34:30
It showed in the Leeds game, they had pacey players, Everton lack players with pace, thats why at this stage have to play a slower tempo.
Not good, but you would have to swap a large number of players.
The thing I noticed in that game, the Leeds players appeared to tire fairly quickly and they made 5 substitutes.
As far as transfers go, it looks like there is no money at present, so that will have to come from what position we finish, transfers out and PSR.
20 Posted 30/01/2026 at 14:42:00
Moyes plays a back four.
We haven't got the players to do that competently either, certainly in the modern day game when full backs are vital to attacking.
21 Posted 30/01/2026 at 15:06:58
One recent article, I think about the Leeds game, reminded us for no seemingly good reason that we haven't won a trophy for 31 years, which set bells off in my head..
Or maybe it doesn't matter?
Just something I've noticed.
Is it A.I.?
Editorial Team
22 Posted 30/01/2026 at 15:11:04
James is new to TW and will be posting a handful of contributions monthly.
Patric likewise, though more regularly, alongside his work for Opta, More than a Game, ToffeeTv and others.
Myself, MK and Anjishnu are what you would refer to as the editorial team. MK is very much still around.
The new site was supposed to include author bios for each TW writer, though I'm not sure where these have ended up after launch... Another thing I'll chase alongside that edit button fix...
Thanks.
23 Posted 30/01/2026 at 15:19:35
Nobody else seems to have seen the Three that the author of the OP is gushing about.
2 Paul respectfully requests "could we have the names of the editorial team - several people support his request.
5 Paul's recently acquired stalker. Comes on. Not to talk about footy (surprise, surprise) but to demonstrate (once again) that he is looking for an argument.
7 Dave A agrees with Mark (1). Like the rest of us. He didnt see a back three either.
12 Paul Hewitt observes that Moyes doesnt seem confident about new signings - seemingly unaware that he has been trying to spell that out for months.
17 Philip isn't getting the attention he was hoping to get for his comments (which again are not football related) so he starts talking to himself.
For what it's worth. I have never seen Moyes play with a back three either Maybe he does it when I'm not looking
24 Posted 30/01/2026 at 15:25:08
We definitely set up with a back 3, start of second half before our non adventureous manager reverted to type.
Anyone at the game should be able to tell you that

25 Posted 30/01/2026 at 15:27:42
Without trying to speak on Patric's behalf too much, I'd imagine writing 'they' comes more naturally for writers (even Evertonians) who cover content across multiple sites, as Patric does, with not all of those sites Everton focused.
Also, using AI is the fastest route to having Google rip up your site's reputation, so no worries needed on that one...

Happy to be assured theres no dirty reds on here!
Have a wonderful blue weekend and I look forward to reading the glowing match reports after our romp on the south coast!

Evertonia 👍
29 Posted 30/01/2026 at 16:00:53
SO - Just so I've got this right.Moyes, That famously innovative coach. Blew the minds of the Leeds coach. 52000 fans and millions watching on telly by radically changing the system he hasnt strayed from in his life He went with a back THREE !!!
THEN (I'm so glad you explained this). After a few minutes he wrong-footed the fucking lot of us again by changing it back to the formation which was getting twatted in the first place.
I have to hand it to you John. Nothing gets past you. Moyes made more changes to his tactics in ten minutes than he has in 20 years and you were on to it.
What a pity nobody told Mykolenko about it
Mykolenko

Extra pint or blindfold?
32 Posted 30/01/2026 at 16:31:52
Here's me thinking JOB, having played center half recently, took a few moments to adjust to being right back again. But I much prefer your wonderful version of events. That Maverick Moyes was bamboozling the Leeds bench by having him do a football hokey cocky.
A cunning plan to distract millions of people while Mykolenko got kidnapped.
The BBC ??? I would much rather debate with somebody who had their own opinions than somebody who has them dictated to him by an organisation which exists to

Most folk on here do it, never mind the new editorial team. Some of the people I most respect on these pages do it from time to time. It ought to be always ‘us, ‘our, we, and so on.

That was Johnny's sign off from his last ever concert.

I have always been proud of Everton, its been tested many times and when I look at things logically, especially by the countless Evertonians, who were taken in by a complete fraud.
I used to drive past a decaying Goodison Pk, spitting feathers, looking like an absolute lunatic to anyone who had took their eyes off the road for a minute, when there was a big banner all the way across the back of the Park End roof, with the words ‘nil satis nisi optimum for all the world to see.
My worry now though is that we have gone to the polar opposite end of the scale with TSF.

About today - who do you think will be playing down our right?
49 Posted 31/01/2026 at 10:03:39
50 Posted 31/01/2026 at 10:13:00
What do you reckon the team will be today?
I'm going
Pickford
Obrien Tarkowski Keane Mykolenko
Gana Garner
Ndiaye KDH McNeil
Barry
51 Posted 31/01/2026 at 10:36:01
Gueye and Rohl, playing in the middle of the park, with NDiaye and KDH, playing either side, a bit further forward, with Barry, leading the line?
Whatever formation we play, hopefully we will play compact and with loads of energy.
52 Posted 31/01/2026 at 10:40:20
Would love to see a team like that but we both know he wont do anything like that mate.
In his ideal world he would have O'Brien and Branthwaite as full backs.
I understand Aznou is a risk in a back four, probably not raedy for that just yet,but as a wing back he's deffo worth a go.
53 Posted 31/01/2026 at 10:54:45
Pickford
Patterson, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko
Rhol, Garner, KDH
Dibling, Ndiaye
Barry
54 Posted 31/01/2026 at 11:12:24
This is the perfect game to test out Aznou and Patterson as wingbacks and keep Garner in the middle.
Don't concede early and we win this.
55 Posted 31/01/2026 at 13:33:55
I can see at least five posters are on to you not talking about footy while trying to attack some and ingratiate yourself with others. I guess whichever way you go, they already know how what you are.
I thought I would respond, because I just wanted to let you know how funny I find it that you are still getting blanked by all an sundry.

Hope your day gets more positive.

But on saying that I DO think theres an opportunity to look at Aznou and Patterson (who played that role for Scotland) as wingbacks. I would play OBrien Branthwaite Mykolenko as the back three in that scenario.
But Moyes will never do that.
