David Moyes accepted the decision to send off Jake O’Brien after the Irish international collided into Amine Adli.

O’Brien was guilty of bringing down Adli after the forward was through on goal and saw a straight red card for hindering a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The 24-year-old was sent off shortly after Bournemouth scored two quick goals to complete a 2-1 turnaround.

"I've not got a view,” David Moyes told BBC Match of the Day when asked about O’Brien’s red card.

“The referee has made his decision and he has chosen to give him a red card. We probably put more pressure on with 10 men than we did with 11. It's the referee's decision, he makes them.”

Despite taking the lead from the penalty spot, Everton were guilty of squandering chances. They were duly punished for their recklessness as the Cherries came back from a goal down to complete the turnaround in the second half.

The loss extended Everton’s winless streak at home and they haven’t won at Hill Dickinson Stadium since December 6. Asked whether he was disappointed with the result, the Everton boss said, “No, the players here are doing fantastically well but we are disappointed because it is a game that we could have won and we didn't. We had a couple of opportunities to make it 2-0 or 3-0 at one point and we didn't take them so you get punished when you don't do that."

It's really quite alarming sometimes how rapidly we seem to collapse at home.

It's like some switch gets hit and they just crumble very very quickly. It's happening often this season but in games last season it happened too, especially in the first half of the season under Dyche.

The only person who should be blamed for O'Brien getting a red card is Moyes.

It was gross mis-management giving Coleman another 1-year contract -- he is no good to our club. He played 3 games last season, 7 the season before.

With Patterson always injured Moyes put himself behind the black ball. Every Everton fan knows O'Brien is not a right-back... but Moyes ignores the fans.

Please go away from our club, Moyes, and take that free loader Coleman with you.

Frank sacked by Spurs after eight months in charge

I'd get this fella signed up now and move Moyes on at the end of the season. Along with the entire scouting network.

Why was he at right-back again, Moyes?

Sick to death of this guy and his stubborn ways.

Jake had a chance to lay out his 6'-6" frame on the turf and clear or deflect to the rest of the back line. They were not covering anyone.

I can only think that his unfamiliarity with the right-back role caused that lapse.

"Frank's style of play never won over fans."

So why will our fans be won over?

Eric,

Spurs fans are amongst the most entitled, egregious fans in football, globally. It's hardly a reason not to think he wouldn't do a good job. Mind you, Benham and his scouting network made his job much easier at Brentford.

I can't take another season of dithery Dave's KITAP1 when we're actually far better than that. He's done a decent job, absolutely, but it's time to move this football club forward. For fucking once!

At first I thought, Jake O'Brien should have backed himself in a foot race rather than just dive in, but having looked at it several times today, his skipper can be clearly seen quitting which probably spooked him into thinking he had to make the challenge.

It's on YouTube for those who didn't record it.

I thought you had advised, many times over the last weeks, the skipper couldn't run?

Frank wouldn't be given the time he needs if he joins us.

I doubt any transformational manager would, which is why so many fans still back Moyes.

A couple of quotes from Frank at Spurs:

"He explained that the offensive flair should not necessarily come at the cost of defensive solidity, pointing out that it is important to defend well to win titles."

"if you want to achieve something big and consistently over the years, you also need to be pretty good at defending. I haven't seen one team achieve something fantastic without being good at defending."

Comment on the Spurs - Newcastle game: "All of what we saw, including the abject performance, the inability to create chances, and the constant jeers from the crowd, have been regular occurrences at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season."

The Athletic headline: Managers can't change their style

Where have we heard all that before?

There was next to no entertainment across his miserable 38 games in charge, especially at home in front of an expectant crowd.

Too often, he seemed more focused on nullifying the opponents' threats rather than focusing on his own side's attacking strengths – and it wound supporters up no end.

Regularly, there seemed a lack of idea over how to break teams down from open play.

Tactical switches confused players. But soon it became too much, too often… and frequently at the last minute, as well.

How many times have we all read exactly the same on ToffeeWeb? But these comments are not about Moyes.

Collapse??? What collapse? It's called two quick goals, the first of which was an exceptional cross and a great header.

The opposition are professional footballers too. You can't expect a 100% dominance on play and, if their best chances just happen to come in close proximity, that's just what sometimes happens.

Why do people expect only our players to be perfect? It's hardly as if they are all the most expensive examples of their position, is it? Shit happens.

Their second comes from the chaos of a ball crossed into a dangerous area, with offside players confusing the defence, and with a good header our defence and keeper are taken out completely.

I think the sending off is on the harsh side and I suspect that is Moyes's view as well. It was what the commentators said as well. However, it's the sort of decision that VAR will never overturn if the ref gives it (probably the same with their penalty shout when there was some contact between Mykolenko's and Rayan's legs).

I've viewed the sending off multiple times and I can't tell whether O'Brien means to take him down or whether the contact is simply inevitable unless he simply slams the brakes on to avoid any contact whatsoever and thereby gives up any hope he has of chasing the attacker with any chance of getting a meaningful challenge in.

If he brakes, he automatically loses 10 yards to the attacker and he's not getting anywhere near. That is being caught between a rock and a hard place, but it's not necessarily the same as just choosing to cynically scythe down the player which is how I think the ref judged it.

"Why do people expect only our players to be perfect?"

I look at the performances of Pickford, Mykolenko, Tarkowski, O'Brien, Gana, Barry etc... and if we could rewind, I would snatch your hand off if you could offer me even a small degree of competence.

"Perfect"? The only thing close to being perfect at the BMD this season has been the buffoonery.

He was in a position that could have been equally right-back or centre-back for the red. And it was him that made the mistake, not Moyes. The same as the handball against Arsenal, his mistake.

Yes, he was ineffective at right-back. His passing, crossing, and overlapping were poor, and begs the question why Patterson is overlooked. And yes, I'd play Patterson.

But the reason he was sent off was nothing to do with playing right-back. Centre-backs find themselves one-on-one all the time, and if he's going to be bringing them down like he's at Twickenham, he can forget making it as a top-grade centre-back.

It was a rash challenge, where I think he either needs to let him take it, and recover back, or slide and cut it out. Instead, he smashed into him and, with Tarkowski not able to recover, it's a red card.

There is clamour on these pages to play young players. They have more pace, stamina etc, but they also make mistakes. A more seasoned player probably doesn't do what Obrien has done.

Individual mistakes are costing us points.

Not to mention poor coaching and man management

Ian #18, but that's the price you pay for trusting young players. As they develop, they err. What you hope is that they don't make that same mistake again. I doubt he will.

I'm heavily biased where Jake is concerned. He's one of only two top-level footballers in the world known to be type 1 diabetics. It's a nearly impossible balancing act (I know) and my respect for him is massive.

If he continues playing fullback, I personally think it’s guaranteed that O’Brien, will continue to occasionally get caught on the wrong side Mike.

It happened the other week when I’m sure it resulted in a goal for Wolves?

If O’Brien, is going to make a career playing for Everton, then I’m absolutely certain it won’t be at fullback. I fucking hope not anyway because it genuinely depresses me watching him playing in this position.

Anyone seen Phil Foden's ' tackle' on the Fulham guy Absolute shocker, only a yellow!!!

I like Foden by the way, just highlighting the inconsistencies of refs when it comes to big decisions for 'certain' teams.

I'm actually dreading going to that stadium now, the novelty wore off after a couple of games and I actually go now expecting to lose.

In fact I can't see us winning another game there, not especially as stubborn as shit Moyes continues to field a centre back at right back an ageing midfielder who in a couple of months looks like his legs have gone completely and a centre back skipper who points the finger at everyone else bar himself when he makes a mistake.

Also I'm sick of going to night games straight from work in the cold and rain and getting home at stupid fuckin o clock.

I'm sorry we ever moved from the old lady.

Didn't know that Mike, and Tony I am getting to that point. You wont need to see it vs the Mancs mind.

Lets see who he goes with, but I don't think he fancies Patterson. Presumably they'll be up vs Cunha, who is unpredictable.

Fed up of hearing how fantastic it looks. That song by Russ Abbott had more atmosphere.

Ian @25. The reason why there is little or no atmosphere is because of the sterile slow motion football we play. Give us some exciting open play, and the atmosphere will improve. The only time I get off my seat is when I get up for my half time drink !<

Our success over the years has come through front foot,in your face football Les.

It's what we are as a club imo,Evertons best style of football.

Fast pace, throw a few strong tackles in and the crowd buy in straight away.

It isn't rock and roll football by any stretch.

This explains Everton, in a nutshell, imo John.

Kendall’s team and Joe Royle’s team, are the only two successful teams I’ve witnessed in over fifty years, and whilst they could also play football, (Kendall’s team played outstanding football) they also made sure they won the battle first.

It amazes me that we have had so many managers who haven’t cottoned on to this because whilst it’s true that Evertonians, love to watch skilful footballers, it’s always been fast paced, front foot, aggressive football, that really gets us Evertonians going the most.

John @29 Exactly, hard work, but then players came in while others were unavailable (eg AFCON) put in some hard work and good performances only to be dropped once the other players were available again. Players should be hungry to put on the Everton shirt and put in a performance but if the manager doesn't appreciate it and reverts to his preferred players, others will think "why bother?"

Tony #21, absolutely no argument.

The sooner Jake and Jarrad establish themselves as our 10-year centre-back pairing, the better!

But that, of course, will require a quality right-back. I can't wait to see who we get in the summer.

Graham Hammond
35 Posted 13/02/2026 at 01:26:27
Mark Steers #2, I have to disagree with you.

The person who actually should be blamed for Jake O'Brien being sent off is James Tarkowski. His run attempt back to goal was frankly pathetic. No urgency, no desire. If that is his fastest effort to backtrack to get goalside (of Jake), then he should not be anywhere near the starting eleven.

We can all see how painfully slow Tarkowski now is, but his trotting back took the biscuit! With a full-on sprint back, even at his pace, he is goalside of Jake and the referee gives Jake a yellow, not a red.

Tarkowski gave up -- in my opinion, unforgivable -- and Darren Hind called it correctly.
