Jack Grealish says his recovery from the operation he had on his season-ending foot injury is going extremely well and that his surgeon is delighted with the progress.
The 30-year-old England midfielder, who is on loan at Everton, had the operation on a stress fracture 10 weeks ago. He suffered the injury during a 1-0 win against his former club Aston Villa in January.
"I feel really good in myself now. I had a 10-week Zoom call with the surgeon, who said it couldn't be looking any better at this stage. So for me, it's happy days and so good to hear news like that."
Grealish made 22 appearances in all competitions for Everton this season, scoring twice and providing six assists.
"As a footballer it's always difficult being injured," he said. "I came to the Merseyside derby game and it got me a bit emotional, because it's something I miss doing so much."
"I can't thank [Everton] enough for the way they've been with me since I've been injured - they've been brilliant. From the staff, to the players, to the manager," he added.
Grealish has a year left on his Manchester City contract, and Everton would be interested in signing him on a permanent basis if they can negotiate a lower price than City's rough valuation of £50M from last summer, when they took him on a season-long loan.
The issue of his high salary (around £300k per week) was expected to be a challenge for Everton to meet last year, and that will be no different going into the summer as he would expect the full value of his current contract to be covered — but this time without any help from Man City.
The current arrangement sees Everton paying the majority of his salary, probably between £230k and £250k per week, with Man City making up the rest. And with him missing half the season through injury, that effectively doubles the cost on a per-game basis.

No way he isn't turning out for us next season. No one else will pay a fee and I am confident he will say it is Everton or nothing.

Here are the first few paragraphs:
There was a time in Jack Grealishs career when Marca, the Spanish sports newspaper, used to run articles asking whether he might end up at the Bernabeu or the Nou Camp. This week, the same publication had an entirely different headline. “Grealish, Pep Guardiolas lost cause at Manchester City because of alcohol,” it read.
Three months since the foot injury that ended Grealishs season, the accompanying photo had already gone viral. A rooftop bar in Manchester, a table filled with empty bottles and, slumped in his chair, the first £100million ($135m) player in British football, seemingly away with the fairies. “Booze party over recovery,” read another headline, in the Times of India.
That was last weekend, and Grealish might have to understand why it has provoked so much seen-it-all-before commentary and also a fair amount of concern, away from the grinning emojis of social-media discourse, about the frequency with which he goes out, it seems, to drink himself into oblivion.
And then a new day, with an entirely different set of images to remind us why so many people care about him and, in lots of cases, lap up the stories about him going on one of his blowouts.
Who didnt enjoy seeing Grealish being filmed meeting athletes from the Special Olympics? Who couldnt be impressed by how natural he was, and generous with his time, as he demonstrated why he was such a good fit to be an ambassador for the British team.
“With my little sister having cerebral palsy, its something close to me,” he explained on camera. “They have such beautiful personalities. Souls, man. It makes you happy to be around these people.”
Everyone likes that version of Jack: caring and fun, down-to-earth and full of charisma. And maybe that helps to explain why so many people have no issue with the stories of his boozing, as if they see it as the heart-warming evidence that he is still, despite everything, just an ordinary bloke. Lots of us, the argument goes, like to go out for a few drinks when the sun is shining. So why shouldnt somebody in his position be allowed? Is he harming anyone?
And that is when this becomes a difficult subject if, like me, you count yourself as a Grealish fan (and most of us are). Because the answer is, yes, he absolutely is. Himself.

But not the scandal-ridden phone-tapping sleaze-mongering English press, eh? Hmmm

I'm not saying he wasn't pissed mind; personally, I don't give a fuck, but it could just be more shite, originating in The Sun, by the way.

And the best way to make sure that doesn't happen is headlines like this. If Everton and Jack have cooked this up between them, it probably saves everyone a few million in negotiation of the eventual fee.

I don't think it's the type of publicity Moyes would be happy with, Kevin. But if Grealish is sober during training and playing and only has blow outs in the off season or while recuperating then maybe he gets some leeway?
Weren't Best and Greaves pissed when they played?

'Ive got a cunning plan.Just go out on the pop all day in the sun in Manchester, Jack. Fall asleep pissed and make a show of yourself. We'll have you back next season then for peanuts and you can stand on the left wing not putting crosses all season. Apart from the 3/4 months you'll be out injured/unfit of course. We are geniuses.'
