Everton offer for Uruguayan midfielder reported

| 04/06/2023 12comments  |  Jump to last

Everton have supposedly lodged a firm offer for FC Midtjylland midfielder Emiliano Martinez but face competition from Bordeaux.

The 23-year-old has reportedly caught the eye of a number of clubs with his performances in Denmark where he has played for the past year or so, first on loan from Bragantino in Brazil and then on a permanent basis following a €5m move.

Montevideo-based journalist Rodri Vázquez says that Martinez will almost certainly be leaving Midtjylland this summer based on his performances and that both the Toffees and the French Ligue 1 club have solid interest.

Whether the Punta del Este-born player would qualify for a work permit to play in the Premier League is a separate issue. He has yet to make a full appearance for Uruguay's national side.

Nevertheless, in view of Everton's restricted transfer budget and the success that clubs like Brentford and Brighton have had in signing low-cost gems from other leagues, Martinez could fit the profile of player Kevin Thelwell could be looking at this summer.

At least it’s not boring even if he’s no good or if the story is dreamt up. Well done Rodri.

Competition from – wait for it Bordeaux, 3rd in Ligue 2. So we are up against Peterborough basically.

Get used to it, Rob @4,

We aren't signing Premier League players for many tens of millions, we need to find those unheard-of lower-league players that turn into diamonds, to be sold on later for huge profit.

Most of them aren't going to work out, but you only need to find one that makes £20-40M profit in a few years.

Everton will have to find something we haven’t possessed for years: imagination and creativity. The £3-5m gems who are, undoubtedly, out there.

Our scouting system has been shit to nonexistent for at least 10 long years now. We’ve been lazy and negligent when it comes to buying players so it’s time to face up to reality, roll up our sleeves, and start doing the leg work required.

We will probably miss out in the final hour of the transfer window, knowing Everton.

Get business done early, if we are doing any at all. No repeat of recent seasons.

As we all know, gems are hard to come by but other clubs have done well so why not Everton?

Obviously the current hierarchy and staff leave a lot to be desired so that's where the changes need to be initially.

Brighton and Brentford are two clubs who have done well in signing no-names without ridiculous fees which speaks volumes for the ineptitude at Everton.

Who was it we signed on a 5-year contract when he only had a 4-year work permit?

Pure Everton that…..

Habib, #3

So true!!!

Who was the forward we signed, looked great, went to Eupen on loan. Did well. Turned out we didn't have a work permit so had to sell!!

Incredible!

Let's be more like Brighton.

Okay, there's a young Uruguayan guy doing well in Denmark. Never heard of him, next.

Can't win.
