Everton face familiar foes Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the season at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Confidence will be high in the Blues camp after a three-game unbeaten run in the league that has seen them beat Brighton and Wolves before a goalless draw against Aston Villa at home. Everton are sixth in the league, having picked up seven points from a possible 12.

They will be looking for their first Merseyside derby victory since April last year, when they won 2-0 thanks to goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The two matches against Liverpool last season ended 2-2, after a famous last-gasp equaliser from James Tarkowski at Goodison, and 1-0 at Anfield after an offside goal was allowed to stand.

Here are the biggest talking points going into the match against Liverpool on Saturday:

Who should lead the line?

Everton’s biggest headache going into the derby concerns the number nine position. Beto was woeful against Aston Villa, missing a string of chances that would’ve seen the Blues pick up three points instead of dropping two in a game where they had 20 attempts.

The thing about Beto is that when the Guinea-Bissau international is not scoring, he can often be underwhelming. His overall game is rough around the edges and his hold-up play and ability to combine with and create chances for teammates aren’t extraordinary.

On the other hand, Thierno Barry is still young and raw and lacks a killer instinct in the box. He’s a bit lightweight whenever he has been up against tough and sturdy centre-backs and while his hold-up and associative play is far better than Beto’s, the 22-year-old Frenchman is yet to get off the mark for his new club.

Beto, meanwhile, has scored twice against Mansfield Town and Wolves this season and he also found the back of the net in the derby at Goodison Park last season. Ultimately, David Moyes will probably be tempted to value Beto’s experience and Evertonians can only hope that their number nine laces his scoring boots at Anfield on Saturday.

Will Röhl displace Iroegbunam from the starting XI here?

Merlin Röhl, signed from SC Freiburg on Deadline Day, made a wonderful impression off the bench in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. He ate up a lot of ground, was constantly involved in give-and-gos with his teammates and won seven duels in just 24 minutes on the pitch.

Röhl also brings a towering physical presence in the middle of the park and is not afraid to show for the ball.

Tim Iroegbunam, meanwhile, has had a mixed start to the season. He’s been brilliant in a few games but a passenger in others. Despite bringing a lot of off-the-ball work, there are moments when Iroegbunam is guilty of lacking composure on the ball and not utilising passes and switches more effectively.

Röhl, however, has played only 24 minutes of football with his new side and only time will tell whether Moyes decides to stick or twist his midfield partnership ahead of this big match.

The battle against intangible elements

Referees giving non-existent fouls, offside goals not being ruled out, imagined penalties being given, career-ending challenges going unpunished and VAR interventions not making sense are all actions that can be filed under the “intangible elements” that Everton will be up against on Saturday.

Let’s be clear, the Merseyside derby has rarely provided a level playing field and Saturday is probably not going to be any different.

Arne Slot’s side, fresh off the back of spending more than the GDP of entire Pacific island nations this summer, have also been extremely lucky this season. Sure, they are yet to drop points in the league but make no mistake, they have ridden their luck to wins against Arsenal, Burnley and against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League recently.

As such, David Moyes’s side will not only be up against 11 players on the pitch, but also media narratives, refereeing biases and an element of fortune that might inexplicably sway in favour of the other half of the city at any point.

A shot at winning

Continuing from the previous point, should Evertonians give up all hope and wave the white flag already? On the contrary, the Blues have a genuine chance of securing their first win at Anfield since 2021.

The arrivals of Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have elevated the side’s ability to fashion out a variety of chances. Iliman Ndiaye has taken to the right wing like a fish to water, while Grealish won the player of the month award in August after registering four assists in two starts.

Liverpool are weak on the flanks and the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez are better going forward than defending, while Dominik Szoboszlai has been used as a stopgap solution and Andy Robertson is past his prime.

Liverpool can be beaten. For all their attacking strengths, they are vulnerable on transitions and I’d like to see Everton taking the game to the opposition. David Moyes has often been guilty of adopting a passive approach in matches against the big sides, but this is a real test of where the Blues stand early in the season. I hope we’re prepared to go to war at Anfield.

I wouldn't say Röhl made a wonderful debut. He was neat and tidy and didn't do much wrong, but to give him his debut at that yard would be folly.

Bring him on around the hour mark if the game is in the balance, or pray to god we are a couple of goals to the good. Other than that, I'd keep Iroegbunam in.

Well, Anjishnu, for a non-Blue a few months ago you have certainly learned all the traditional derby talking points in a very short time!

I think it would be best if Liverpool take an early lead because otherwise Moyes will adopt a defensive "We have what we hold" mantra that will end in a couple of dubious late goals or penalties in injury time being conceded.

If, on the other hand, we go behind after 2 minutes, then we have to attack and hopefully, we equalize in injury time. Then, before Moyes has a chance to communicate plans to shut up shop, we score another and win.

Weirdly, I think Beto should play in this one precisely because he is pretty useless. The RS will close down Grealish and Ndiaye and not give him a second thought. This might enable him to get a bit of space where he can do a gangly run and score a flukey goal.

If Barry plays, he is more likely to follow Moyes's instructions and spend all night running down channels or trying to win knock-downs against Van Dijk.

Hope Branthwaite is fit.

Play Keane instead of Beto.

I would play Ndiaye up front and Dibling in his place on the right.

Great minds think alike Michael B @7. Fools seldom differ too, but I feel that playing, Beto and Tim is handing the RS an immediate advantage. Merlin in for Tim and Illi as a striker is the best option.

Tyler Dibling too, getting his baptism in his first Liverpool - Everton derby!

Presenter on Radio 5 seemed to guffaw as she read out the ‘slanted' statistic that we haven't won in front of a crowd at Anfield in the 21st century.

Bet it didn't even occur to her why ‘in front of a crowd' was part of the sentence. She certainly didn't remark on it. Shame, because then she might have wondered if there were something significantly different about the way the games are refereed at that particular circle of Hell, where the officials feel the pressure of an ‘affronted when things aren't easy for them' home crowd.

We shouldn't approach this as in any way different to the Brighton game. They are definitely not invulnerable and if we can score first and retain the lead until half-time I think we can get the 3 points.

Not one for actually avoiding watching any of our games so I will be watching tomorrow and hoping for the best.

Come on you ‘time to stop living in their shadow' Blues!

I think Beto should take his place upfront.

Misses chances ? yes he does but he is also a physical handful who defenders don't like playing against, there is also his aerial threat.

We have never had a better opportunity to win at Anfield as we have ball carriers who can get at them.

I also expect us to win a lot of free kicks and there is no doubt through aerial crosses we can score from them.

As for the usual Moyes knockers over defensive tactics, it depends what players you had at your disposal at the time.

We are no longer a team "bringing a knife to a gunfight" because Moyes has brought in players who can win games so cut him some slack.

Everton 2-0 @ 40/1 get on and enjoy your winnings !!

To those of you that are going tomorrow:

• Make sure you have a tetanus shot before you set off for the match.

• Take an app that translates Scandinavian languages into English. It will help you communicate with the ‘locals'.

• Don't show that you know anything about football. It will be lost on them.

• That RS supporting bloke stood over there with his bird? That's actually his sister (who's also his bird).

• Yep, you're right, Slot is even more of a cunt than Klopp. Pretty amazing isn't it?

• Try to ignore the mindless racism and generally Neanderthal behaviour of their knuckle-dragging fans. Apparently they're ‘gobshites' so expect the worst.

• Once it gets to time added on, put your fingers in your ears, close your eyes, and repeat ‘lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala' for at least 10 minutes whilst thinking about Jack Grealish and/or The Hill Dickinson Stadium.

• Have another tetanus shot when you get home... ‘just in case'.

Who will the redshite fans be winding up and blaming for anything and everything that goes against them.

Looking forward to seeing Sloth being sent to the stands.

Play the team, not the crowd. Give it a real good go, Blues. Show them no respect. Jog out a minute before the game begins... do not come out with them!

Touch that dammed sign. Play in our away kit... another Everton first!? Win the game... the entire teams of the Premier League will thank us and most importantly... fear us!!!

Bill # 14……….you may have been joking about playing in our away kit, but you might actually have a point. Is there anything stopping us playing in our white kit tomorrow? Maybe it’s been the blue strip all along that’s been our “Unlucky Kit” down the years at that shithole. Play in all white and confuse the bastards!

P.S……..I’d be wiping me arse on a bit of bog roll before going out, then wiping it on that sign!

Exactly, Si@9, it's funny when people sneer and then wonder why you shrug your shoulders and start laughing at the irony of what they're trying to say.

Liverpool probably conceded more penalties at Anfield during the Covid season than they have conceded in the 10 years that have overlapped both before and after that season.

They also lost a lot more games at Anfield, possibly because the officials never had to contend with nowhere near the same pressure that exists when they have got a baying crowd and so many people in the media ready to placate the greatest supporters in the world.

To be fair to our neighbours, we have seen them have a couple of very borderline last-minute winners chalked off in the last few years (probably longer than that with Suarez's teeth being ruled offside, possibly being the last derby Moyes managed against Liverpool at Goodison before his return?) I did like reading Moyes say that we lost to an offside goal not that long ago against tomorrow's opponents.

I just hope our players are all tucked up in bed right now and sleeping soundly, and they all wake up feeling full of positive energy in the morning, ready to go and break the hoodoo!

See the RS womens goalkeeper is being investigated for a racist comment………towards one of her own teammates.

That whole club, including their Neanderthal fans, stinks from top to bottom. Come on Everton, put the gobshites in their rightful place, just like a piece of shit on the sole of your foot!

Despite his obvious flaws, Beto is surprisingly quick when he gets going. Combine that with his physique and, if Moyes can polish his skills a bit, you never know.

We certainly have the talent to provide enough ammunition for him.

It was absolutely pissing down at 7 am this morning, Nicholas. I used to love playing in the rain, but not when it was as heavy as it was when I opened my front door this morning. (I hated it when I couldn't gauge the whole pitch.)

Bring loads of towels and some extra kit for the players to get changed into at half-time and use the rain to our advantage, simply because I have always thought it was so much easier to run hard in the rain.

My team-talk would be very simple. Fight, work hard, back each other up and relish it. Realise how lucky we are to be representing those brilliant Evertonians, so let's go and give them a glorious day in the fuckin rain!

Two major issues:

Moyes's record away at the Sky Big Six... Has he ever won a match?

We all know that something dodgy will favour LFC at some point, which effectively means that we would need to be two clear goals ahead to get the win. A draw would be a good result.

Today's a win-win for me tbh. Its my son's 18th birthday, so nothing could spoil it. Whatever happens at the Gates of Hell, I will have a wonderful day.

If the Blues manage to get a result then that would be the cherry on top. UTFT!

Nice article in the Daily Mail this morning, detailing the progress the Club have made since the New Owners arrived. All very positive stuff and a huge change to the articles that used to refer to the Clubs management as being something of a 'basket case'. Good way to start the day, and hoping for an equally good performance later.

Hoping that Jimmy is back in midfield. To do anything else seems foolish.

Part of me hopes that Moyes is just being sneaky with the media and opposition regarding Myko and he's actually ready to go. If he's not available then I can't see how McNeil isn't the preferred option over Garner.

Otherwise the team pretty much picks itself. Beto seems like a sure thing although I'd agree with others and try a 'false 9' to get hold of the ball and bring the attacking 3 into the game. History says Moyes won't mess around too much in a fixture like this.

O'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, X
Ndiaye, Gana, X, Grealish

I would prefer starting Charly over Tim. You can talk about skill all you like but Charly has energy and fight. And he has that ability to float into the final third and be the extra man (a bit like Tim Cahill). Plus he has played in two derbies already.

Then switch him for Röhl at 50 minutes...
