Season › 2024-25 › News Armando Broja looks forward to what he can bring when fit Michael Kenrick 05/09/2024 70comments | Jump to last Everton FC Armando Broja has been talking to the Everton website about his last-minute move to Everton at the end of the transfer window on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Broja is sidelined at the moment due to an Achilles issue and it has been reported he will be out until around October. The striker has shared his own assessment on his recovery with supporters in an interview with the club's official channels: “I want to make an impression on the fans, too, by scoring goals, creating chances, my work rate off the ball, being aggressive as a striker and helping the team out in any way I can. “I want to come in and build a great relationship with the fans, with my teammates and with the coaching staff. When you feel at home and you feel happy, that's when you play your best football. “I want to show my best here, I want to score as many goals as possible and help the team finish as high in the Premier League as possible and hopefully we can have a successful season. “I think I'm quite a fast player. I like to run in behind and be aggressive. Obviously, I like to score goals and I like to help the team out with playmaking and really get involved in games. I can run and press and be aggressive off the ball as well. I want to add that variation. I'll give my all to the Club, to the fans and to my teammates.” Quotes sourced from evertonfc.com Reader Comments (70) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. He's got an awful long way to go to revive a career which has tailed off seriously. But he has talent. Calvert-Lewin has lots of qualities, but I think Broja has the potential to become a much better player. We're unlikely to see him realise that potential this season — but hopefully it works out. Christy Ring 2 Posted 05/09/2024 at 14:41:59 Hopefully we'll see him in a blue shirt sooner rather than later, and definitely an upgrade on Beto. Michael Kenrick 3 Posted 05/09/2024 at 15:19:50 Fine boy from Slough. Seems very keen. Still no clarity on his injury — which is really the only thing of any importance right now — just the usual platitudes:“It's going well. Hopefully, I can be back as quick as possible. I think I'm going in the right direction.“ Mike Hayes 4 Posted 05/09/2024 at 15:36:15 Let's hope he is fit and ready at least for the start of November against Southampton away.Good luck and welcome to the best club in the world! Dale Self 5 Posted 05/09/2024 at 16:12:06 Broja will be a better fit. He can come deep to work with Ndiaye and his runs will create space. His work rate will also be appreciated. Danny O’Neill 6 Posted 05/09/2024 at 16:16:00 Well, along with Matty Cash, from nearby Iver, close to Slough and just down the road from me, maybe our scouts may want to get themselves down here.Just like Merseyside, there is a good standard of youth football down here.Let's get him fit. The squad is looking a lot better and he will add to it. Mark Murphy 7 Posted 05/09/2024 at 16:36:38 Someone on another thread said he visited Romania and Broja is worshipped there.I questioned why an Albanian from Slough would be revered in Romania but never found out? Any ideas? Danny O’Neill 8 Posted 05/09/2024 at 17:05:59 No idea Mark. As you say, born in the UK, and plays for Albania.I've spent quite a bit of time in Bucharest and never heard anyone mention him.On a tangent, if anyone visits Romania, go to a city called Iasi. Beautiful city in the north of the country, surrounded by lakes and forests.I'm looking forward to seeing this lad play. I have a good feel about him. John Wilson 9 Posted 05/09/2024 at 17:11:17 Broja is a unit. Looking at the pictures of him in his interview from when he first played at Goodison and the size he looks now, he has filled out massively and Premier League size for a good Number 9. Hope we get to see the best of him after he comes back from injury. Beto will be let go next summer if we sign him on a permanent deal. Jack Convery 10 Posted 05/09/2024 at 17:22:51 Welcome Armando. I hope you will succeed at Goodison.I see Leo Dubois, former French International, is still available on a free after being released by Galatasaray last week. He's a full-back who can play either side. A 1-year contract with an option to extend is surely worth a go. He's better than Young and will give Mykolenko a gee-up too. Barry Rathbone 11 Posted 05/09/2024 at 18:12:25 Surprise us and your life will never be the same — you will be a god.Good luck. Derek Powell 12 Posted 05/09/2024 at 19:11:21 Ipswich pulled the plug on him once they medically had a look. Rumour is he will never play in the top flight again. Brian Williams 13 Posted 05/09/2024 at 19:15:45 Rumour? Ha! Rob Halligan 15 Posted 05/09/2024 at 19:19:42 Derek,If the rumour is he will never play in the top flight again, then it won't cost us a penny. More bullshit! Danny Baily 16 Posted 05/09/2024 at 20:45:54 It's a gamble. His recent injury and scoring record is really poor. Mal van Schaick 17 Posted 05/09/2024 at 20:58:51 Welcome Armando. Get fit quick, bang the goals in and show the rest of them how it's done. Derek Knox 18 Posted 05/09/2024 at 21:04:51 Welcome, we have been linked with you for some time now. I think because of your history and Injuries etc, you have as much to prove to yourself, as much as proving to the fans. We desperately need a striker, let's hope you fit the bill and deliver.Ay, there's the dilemma, play well and score regularly, and Chelsea will want the full fee, or want to move you to someone, who will pay the transfer. Play unconvincingly and we may get a reduced deal, but may have another dud on our books!I don't think Dyche's Stone, Paper, Scissors, or advice from Dumb and Dumber will yield anything positive in that direction. Brian Williams 19 Posted 05/09/2024 at 21:50:00 If he doesn't get fit, we don't pay.If he gets fit and plays shit, we wave goodbye at the end of the season, having only paid his wages. If he gets fit and bangs in plenty of goals, we have an instant replacement for Calvert-Lewin for £30zm (agreed purchase fee) which at today's prices is a steal.Win-win for us, unless you're one of the TW doom-mongers. Mark Andrews 20 Posted 05/09/2024 at 21:50:58 Will the tactical potato play him? Denis Richardson 21 Posted 05/09/2024 at 21:52:40 Glad to have another body but, until he's out of the treatment room, he's kind of irrelevant. Lot of games between now and November. Colin Callaghan 22 Posted 05/09/2024 at 22:13:27 Was hoping we were able to pull this move off when Frank was here.Let's hope we get what he showed at Southampton. No real downside. A lot more games after November than before. Frank Fearns 23 Posted 05/09/2024 at 22:36:02 I really hope he comes good but I'd of preferred a full back or two -- not injured!! Justin Doone 24 Posted 05/09/2024 at 22:42:23 I've only seem glimpses of him admittedly but I don't get the hype. He looks okay, a more natural forward and better runner with the ball then Dom, but he's not got a good goal scoring record and Fulham didn't want him back. Hope he's the business but, as I've said many times, young players (under 23) who suffer repeated long-term injuries will struggle to be good players. I'm not expecting much game time from him but I can see us paying the majority of his wage whilst he remains on the treatment table after making a 5 minute cameo. Anthony Jones 25 Posted 05/09/2024 at 22:43:27 Ademola Lookman has just been shortlisted for the Balon d'Or. Tom Bowers 26 Posted 05/09/2024 at 22:49:26 Obviously getting more goal scoring options helps a lot and with the possibility of some real input from Chermiti and even more from Ndiaye we may just be a bigger threat than at any time over the last few seasons. The defence is still dodgy to say the least but hopefully Branthwaite's return will help solidify things… alas after the Villa game.I think we can all put the meltdown last week as a one-off as they had played quite well until the last 10 minutes. James Swinscoe 27 Posted 05/09/2024 at 23:01:11 If Broja is not good enough for top class football… Does that mean he is okay for the Championship? Brendan McLaughlin 28 Posted 05/09/2024 at 23:02:45 Anthony #25,We sold him for decent money when our backs were up against the PSR wall...What option would you have gone for? Jim Robinson 29 Posted 06/09/2024 at 01:50:42 I'm normally a ‘glass half-full' type, but this season is testing me, and I have a good feeling about this guy. Chelsea didn't rate Salah or De Bruyne so I'm hopeful they're just as mistaken about Broja. In fact I'd even settle for another Lukaku before his head got too big to fit through the dressing room door. Armando, I hope you fully recover from your injury and you get the chance to display your talents to their fullest on the turf of Goodison Park. Welcome to Everton FC. Paul Ferry 30 Posted 06/09/2024 at 03:50:24 Colin Callaghan @22: "Let's hope we get what he showed at Southampton."Yes, let's! That would be, erm, 6 goals in 32 appearances. Darryl Ritchie 31 Posted 06/09/2024 at 06:31:17 I had heard that we were interested in him, so I watched him in the Euros. Albania vs Italy. To tell the truth, he was not very good. A lot of standing and not much running. He looked disinterested. I didn't know about the injury issue; he may have been less than 100%. I hope that's the reason. Danny O’Neill 32 Posted 06/09/2024 at 06:44:26 Let's see how he plays for Everton before we judge him.Players can perform differently at different clubs. Paul Ferry 33 Posted 06/09/2024 at 07:36:50 Of course, Danny, but it's also silly to project false hope on misleading information as Colin Callaghan - I recall that name - does on what in the cold light of day is a very poor goal return. As in, "Let's hope we get what he showed at Southampton."I, for one, hope that he does massively better for us than he did at St Mary's with his impressive 6 goals in 32 appearances. Hugh Jenkins 34 Posted 06/09/2024 at 09:43:45 Derek (12), The "other" rumour I heard was that he (Broja) didn't fancy Ipswich so turned down the move and the "injury" excuse was issued by Ipswich in a face-saving exercise. Sam Hoare 35 Posted 06/09/2024 at 09:46:31 I'm not sure £30m is a great potential fee for a forward who has 8 goals in over 60 matches in the PL. He definitely has some potential but the injury put him off track and it remains to be seen whether he can get anywhere near the levels people expected him to when he broke through. He has the assets; speed, strength and good technique but it remains to be seen whether he can put it all together consistently. Not sure he will manage to oust DCL as first choice and he may have work to do even to be second pick.A good option to have but I have some doubts as to how much he'll get to play unless we get some bad injuries. The good news is that it allows us to surely send Chermitti out on loan in January to get games which he badly needs in order to continue his development. Dave Abrahams 36 Posted 06/09/2024 at 09:51:43 Sam (35),I think Chermiti shows good potential. It would be better if he stays here and improves it. Why move a young foreign lad around the country while he is still getting used to being here at Everton?? Sam Hoare 37 Posted 06/09/2024 at 10:33:35 Dave, by January he will have been at Everton for a year and half which is more than long enough to learn what the coaches want from him.Young players need first-team minutes (and ideally starts) in order to progress and, if he's not going to get them at Everton, then he absolutely needs to get them elsewhere.Look how much Branthwaite progressed in his time at PSV. Chermiti would benefit hugely from getting 10-15 match starts somewhere in the second half of the season. I dunno how many matches he'd get to start ahead of Calvert-Lewin, Beto and Broja under Dyche. I'd expect him to go out on loan. If it goes well, then he begins to look like a real option for next season instead of spending £30M on Broja or someone else. Pat Kelly 38 Posted 06/09/2024 at 10:55:03 Beto, Chermiti, Dele, Broja. Maybe some day we'll sign a potent goalscorer instead of a potential goalscorer. Robert Tressell 39 Posted 06/09/2024 at 11:09:23 Pat # 38, Even Nunez (£80M) and Hojlund (£70M) struggled to get double figures last season. Very hard to buy a ready made goalscorer. Generally takes patience and development even if you have plenty of money. Colin Callaghan 40 Posted 06/09/2024 at 11:24:46 Paul is here everyone with skewed stats.Broja may have had 6 goals in 32 Premier League appearances but added another 3 in the 6 cup (1 in 4 in the FA Cup, and 2 in 2 in the EFL Cup) games he played also. That's 9 goals in 38 games for a bad Southampton team that finished 1 point above us that year. This is all as a 19-year-old and the lad is now only 22. Perfect signing for our situation.I can see where English flavor comes from if you read recipes like stats Frosty Ferry. If you saw him play, you'd realize he has that Richarlison fire too. He will be loved. Danny O’Neill 41 Posted 06/09/2024 at 11:54:05 We're all dividing into camps on something we all agree on: Everton.Let's give the lad a chance and then we can judge him.I agree with Dave Abrahams on Chermiti. Keep him here and introduce him into the team. He has shown potential. The squad has more depth now. The manager needs to use them. The only area that still concerns me is midfield. Jim Bennings 42 Posted 06/09/2024 at 11:54:33 If he gets fit by early November — and stays fit, which is more important — then he's got the prospect of getting 6 or so goals.I've always said you need all of the strikers at the club to score goals — not just one or two.Even in Moyes's era, you'd have Yakubu who was the main man, for example, then you'd have subs like McFadden, Vaughan, Anichebe and probably in his second season Johnson — all capable of coming in and getting you 5, 6 or 7 goals each respectively. These days, there is too much reliance on one striker and not enough comes from the squad strikers. Sam Hoare 43 Posted 06/09/2024 at 13:00:03 Danny @41, Why keep Chermiti here if we have 3 other strikers? It wouldn't benefit him or us.If Dyche was planning on playing him more than last season, then why get Broja? We're not playing in Europe and we usually play a lone striker, we don't need 4 strikers so Chermiti looks very unlikely to get much game time.Sat on our bench, he misses out on the chance to develop and becomes a diminishing asset. If he goes on loan and scores 10 goals in Portugal or Holland or the Championship, then he doubles in value and gains vital experience and confidence. Look at what the loan did for Branthwaite.I don't understand the reasoning for keeping him as a 4th striker? Si Cooper 44 Posted 06/09/2024 at 13:58:53 Sam (43), is he locked into ‘4th'? Is there any chance we will start playing 2 frontmen at the same time, with the other 2 coming off the bench most games? If we get to Christmas and he's basically back of the queue behind 3 fit and fully functional goalscorers, then I'd be comfortable with him getting game time and development elsewhere. At the moment, I'm not sure he won't have plenty of game time for us. Peter Hodgson 45 Posted 06/09/2024 at 14:06:25 I'm with you on that, Sam, not that anyone, let alone Dyche will listen. As soon as Broja is fit, whenever that may be, contact with potential loan clubs should be made and the lad sent out to a club where he is going to get valuable minutes, and starts, so that he can develop whilst we are in the fortunate position of having a choice of strikers to call upon. I can't remember when that last was, but it is an opportunity we shouldn't miss.Let's see if Broja gets fit and go for it then. Sam Hoare 46 Posted 06/09/2024 at 14:10:45 Si, of course nothing is certain in football but you have to play the odds. He only managed 197 minutes for us last season in the Premier League, having got 840 minutes the season before at Sporting. This season, he may well get even less with Broja arriving and Calvert-Lewin looking fit. I just really rate him and want him to become a real player with us. I think that is less likely to happen if his development stalls through lack of playing time sat around waiting for the odd 4 minutes where Dyche throws on a third striker. Colin Callaghan 47 Posted 06/09/2024 at 15:48:02 Chermiti deserves a loan. Short term we use Beto and hope he can show enough to get our money back. Can not see Beto in our plans past his existing deal. James Marshall 48 Posted 06/09/2024 at 16:32:57 He reminds me of Mitrovic. Never really rated him but might be a nuisance and score a few goals a season.I'm another one ready to be proved wrong. Paul Ferry 49 Posted 06/09/2024 at 17:05:21 If nine goals in 38 games - 6/32 in the PL and 2 goals against mighty Newport - is the answer then we had better keep our fingers very tightly crossed. But then, this same poster believes that Beto could well be our saviour this season. File under let's wait and see but unlikely. Colin Callaghan 50 Posted 06/09/2024 at 17:51:00 More misinformation from Paul Ferry.Where did you read saviour??Mitrovic is also a target man who weighs 15-20 lbs more than Broja, they aren't the same type of player. (That's about 6-9 kilos for you Paul) Mark Murphy 51 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:03:29 I think PF is in Yankee Doodle land so imperial is probably more his thang. Why so confrontational?? Paul Ferry 52 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:06:38 It's his forte Mark. Ho hum. Bless.Mitrovic is also a target man who weighs 15-20 lbs more than Broja, they aren't the same type of player. (That's about 6-9 kilos for you Paul) ?????????????? Relevance? That's a question. There's really no comeback from 6/32 in the PL and 2 goals against mighty Newport, is there, quite honestly? James Marshall 53 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:16:26 He's scored 8 in 66 games in the league — 37 of those games he was a sub, and the vast majority of his starts were for Southampton. That's a goal every 351 minutes. For context, Calvert-Lewin scores a goal every 262 minutes. He is only 22 so he has time on his side. I don't think he's particularly spectacular, and this is borne out by him coming to Everton, surely? We're shite, we're bottom of the Premier League and we've struggled for years. He didn't exactly have the pick of teams vying for his services. We're desperate for numbers, so here he is. Injured. Paul Ferry 54 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:27:28 Exactly, James, a nice and welcome splash of realism but I could never call us 'shite' mate, even if we are. I agree, let's wait and see until after his hopeful recovery. Hope all is well with you and yours. Mark Murphy 55 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:37:05 I was a fan of Broja for years and always hoped Everton would eventually sign him. But then I watched this summer's Euros when he was flagged up as “playing for a big move” and he flopped.I'm surprised (not sure really…) that we went back for him but I truly wish him the best and I hope he returns to his Southampton form. In my memory, he was a season-long sensation but, in reality, it was probably just a 2-month purple patch? Paul Ferry 56 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:41:51 Less than two months, I think, Mark, when for a little while he was a lot of people's third forward in fantasy teams. But then it all dried up and he got binned. And Broja has done little if anything since St. Mary's,, and that includes, as you say, a poor tournament. Colin Callaghan 57 Posted 06/09/2024 at 18:55:09 I don't have a comeback for who he scored against. I just think it's funny that you spread misinformation either ignorantly or maliciously to further your point. Then, when you get called out and you casually move on or harp on something that isn't in his control (like his opponents).I will never judge a player on an international tournament again but was disappointed with his showing. Glad he didn't blame injuries though. Paul Ferry 58 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:06:35 Okay, last time Col, last chance. You're getting tiresome now and I have work to do. Let's look at "misinformation", shall we? Ready? What exactly is this "misinformation" that I — oh dear, "ignorantly or maliciously" 😃👠— spread around like a poisoned oil slick, Col? Would it be, Broja 6 goals in 32 Saints league appearances or his 2 goals against mighty Newport?nb: I hope you're noting that others have had one or two questions for you. I don't want to hog your limelight, James Marshall 59 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:17:31 Paul,Okay, shall we say we're not very good these days instead of shite? Gentler but with the same outcome!I'm good by the way, thanks for asking. Hope all's well with you and yours too, mate. I'm even flying high in the FPL for a change! Dave Abrahams 60 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:23:48 Sam (37), I think near the end of last season, Chermiti was getting more game time than Beto and is a better player than Beto is now, just my opinion. Colin Callaghan 61 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:29:01 I guess we'll just casually move on that you first stated 6 and willingly left out cups. Now you're stating 8 and forgetting or not realizing he scored another in the FA Cup vs West Ham. But instead, you harp about how bad Newport are and scoring 2 in your debut isn't enough.Thats misinformation. I'm not sure you're intent but it's suspect.I've even caught you in the live forum going after dyche for not putting Onana in the box on corners. Onana was in the box all the time. It's a pattern with you. Mark Murphy 62 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:29:52 So he's a bit Mickey Walsh then Paul? Andy Crooks 63 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:33:45 I always think every striker we sign is brilliant until I see him playing. I was totally delighted when we signed Ramirez and then undelighted quite quickly.Like many, Chermiti's reputation grows with every game he misses. Paul Ferry 64 Posted 06/09/2024 at 19:53:08 He has better hair than MW's perm MM and that hideous mustache that I swear used to move like a slug.Okay, Col, you did not meet the challenge. You have confirmed that none of my information was incorrect (there was no need to mention West Ham in the context, by the way, they are somewhat more storied than lowly Newport). I'm done with this silliness. Consider yourself swatted. One last thing, it seems a tad desperate to mention a single comment from the LF, if indeed I did post that, and my advice would be to let it go.No more words.Have a nice day CC! Colin Callaghan 65 Posted 06/09/2024 at 21:13:10 Leaving out the whole truth is misinformation. Doing it willingly is childish.Where did you read saviour??I'll be here to keep you in check with your nonsense. Sam Hoare 66 Posted 06/09/2024 at 23:18:06 Dave @60, Yes, I think that's probably true about Beto and Chermiti last season. But add Broja to the mix and I just don't see him getting much time.If Dyche fancies him and plans to play him, then that's different but I just don't wanna see his development stalling on our bench as I do think there's some real potential there (though he's probably not ready to be a Premier League starter yet). Andrew Keatley 67 Posted 06/09/2024 at 23:55:28 Dave (60),I am not even remotely convinced that Beto or Chermiti have what it takes to succeed as Premier League players.Beto lacks grace and poise but might end up proving something of a useful nuisance in the 18-yard box. His link-up play is too short of what is required though; I think he's technically a very below-average footballer.Chermiti has done very little so far but, for some reason, has got a few fans excited. I cannot see it myself — or not yet anyway. I remember watching him for the Under-21s once, and he scored a brace (a penalty and a tap-in after a defensive mix-up) but I thought he was one of the least impressive players on the pitch. So I am putting no eggs in either of their baskets, and I don't expect either to be here in two season's time.A fit Broja might prove to be an option but my hunch is that Thelwell merely sees Broja as cheapish cover for the season, especially if we are forced to sell Calvert-Lewin in the January window. The option of signing Broja at the end of the season for £30 million? He would have to score 10 goals in 20 games for that to even become a consideration, and I doubt that is going to happen. Broja is a stopgap and an insurance policy. Robert Williams 68 Posted 07/09/2024 at 10:08:24 I see we have a deal with "Red" Bull. Couldn't we get a 'Blue' Bull? This club knows all about 'bull' — we've been covered in it for long enough! Jerome Shields 69 Posted 08/09/2024 at 08:01:54 Calvert-Lewin is in the shop window so neither Beto nor Chermiti are likely to get the game time they need. As for Broja, he is to play going through a revolving door with Calvert-Lewin for medical treatment if need be.There are other factors at Everton that affect players playing: the basket-case running of the club and a manager under pressure with survival mode on permanently. Phil Lewis 70 Posted 08/09/2024 at 11:57:14 I saw enough in the Bournemouth game to give me hope in our attacking options. I believe, if he can stay injury-free, then Calvert-Lewin will be provided with the quality service he's been denied since Rodriguez's departure. He will at least have competition now in the shape of Broja, Chermiti and Beto.We can consolidate the defence when Branthwaite returns. Personally I'd also give Virginia a few games, if only to reward his patience and keep Pickford on his toes. Let's put the first three games behind us and learn from them. The squad has enough options now, to bench Doucoure, Keane, McNeil, Harrison, Young and others who've failed to find consistent form. Dyche should seize the initiative with a new exciting permutation that will see us climb the table, playing the attractive football which dominated Bournemouth until that disastrous 10 minutes. Ray Roche 71 Posted 08/09/2024 at 12:51:36 Phil, you mentioned benching McNeil. McNeil played more centrally and was, in my opinion, one reason why we played such good football for 80 minutes. And it was his sublime through ball that allowed Calvert-Lewin to score. But, as others have mentioned, McNeil and others ran out of steam and should have been subbed rather than leave them on. I saw enough to make me believe that we now have players who can play the football we'd like to watch.
