Season › 2024-25 › News Seamus Coleman will be at the club ‘one way or another’ says David Moyes Anjishnu Roy 16/05/2025 10comments | Jump to last David Moyes confirmed that captain Seamus Coleman will be at the club next season “one way or another” while speaking to the media before Sunday’s emotionally-charged affair against Southampton. Coleman, who turns 37 this year, is one of 15 players (including loan players) whose contract runs out this summer. Moyes, however, backs the full-back to stay beyond this season and the plan, as it stands, is on a player contract. “I need him here, his leadership, his message he has among the players and in the dressing room is so strong, it will be wrong of me to let him go. One way or another, Seamus will be here certainly next season,” Moyes said in the pre-match press conference. Signed from Silgo Rovers in 2009, Coleman has made a club record 368 Premier League appearances for the Blues. However, his prominence has waned in recent years and has made just five appearances in all competitions this season. The veteran came off the bench in the 3-1 win over Fulham last Saturday and it was his first appearance for the Blues since the 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Boxing Day. When asked if the veteran will be given the chance to lead Everton out on the field for what will be the final fixture for the men’s team at the 133-year-old Goodison Park, Moyes said, “It does come into my thinking, but what I will say is that Sunday is a game in which we’re going to do everything we can, to prepare the best and play the best we can, but Seamus will stay next season, without doubt. He will be part of the group.” Coleman is the only remaining player from Moyes’ first spell in charge at the club and the Scot considers him an Everton legend. “Legends are normally the ones who win FA Cups and are involved in League titles and stuff like that, but I think there are other reasons with Seamus, more importantly, his professionalism, and as a human being. “In some ways, he’s carried Everton a little bit through the difficult period and I know he’s certainly done it in the dressing room.” Reader Comments (10) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Jeff Hough 2 Posted 16/05/2025 at 17:58:10 Agree with you Mike, 100%. Andrew James 3 Posted 16/05/2025 at 18:17:27 When we've been busy out there buying other veterans like Young and Delph, to not retain him would be daft. The coach trusts him, the fans adore him and he loves the club. He'd be a squad player but a great leader and could move in field to a Gareth Barry sort of position or onto the right wing. Who knows? He might help bring along Patterson?People always moan about jobs for the boys but with Baines and Seamus, there look like benefits in that. Jerome Shields 4 Posted 16/05/2025 at 22:49:21 More of the same. Brian Keating 5 Posted 17/05/2025 at 08:45:48 I love Seamus an inappropriate amount for a man I've never met. He's Captain of my club and country.I'm delighted he's staying around; hopefully he replaces Moyes some day as manager. Danny O'Neill 6 Posted 17/05/2025 at 09:09:58 I don't think it's moaning, Andrew @3.We have made some poor decisions in the past, keeping people on just because they had played for Everton.Seamus doesn't fall into that category, and I'd be delighted if there is a position for him at the club. I just don't know what that would be, but that's for the management team and club to decide.I personally think his playing days at the top level are gone, so I think that is ruled out.Sometimes players can go on forever. Ashley Young and Gana are good examples for us right now.Others are like Rooney, who's legs were gone in his early 30s by the time he came home. I think Seamus has had his day as a player. But he has a role to play at the club. We have to remember that horrific leg break will have taken it's toll. It's not jobs for the boys. I don't care if they are ex-players or not. If they can add value to Everton, which I believe the Donegal boy would, then it's fine by me. Dave Abrahams 7 Posted 17/05/2025 at 16:25:49 Mike (1), I agree with you entirely and let's leave it at that for now while Seamus enjoys a run out tomorrow and get a real Goodison roar of appreciation— the future can wait. Christy Ring 8 Posted 17/05/2025 at 18:14:39 Agree with Mike (1), Blue blood in his veins, a legend who deserves to stay.We made mistakes with keeping players in the past, but he definitely doesn't deserve to fall into that category, an inspiration. Jim Bennings 9 Posted 17/05/2025 at 20:00:33 Great servant, our Seamus, but at 37 in October, looks like it's caught up now. Some players are super fit until late 30s but I think Seamus has slowed off a lot since he hit 30 in all truthfulness, many injuries since 2017 have played a factor too.I love the guy, I hope he stays on as a wise old head at least even as a coach in some form but I honestly think we have to accept the productive playing years are at the end now. Dean Johnson 10 Posted 20/05/2025 at 09:32:41 Colema and Baines, the two best full backs in the league when they were on form.So glad they're both staying, have to say that Myko has had some pretty good mentors in Ash Cole, Baines and Coleman. He gets better every game without being spectacular and I think Moyes will push him to be even better. Shame same hasn't happened with patts, but hopefully we'll find another young kid to train up.Love ye Seamus 💙 Add Your Comments In order to post a comment, you need to be logged in as a registered user of the site. » Log in now Or Sign up as a ToffeeWeb Member — it's free, takes just a few minutes and will allow you to post your comments on articles and Talking Points submissions across the site.
