Season › 2024-25 › News West Ham steal a win after Everton make more defensive mistakes Michael Kenrick 30/07/2025 75comments | Jump to last West Ham United 2 - 1 Everton Everton took the lead in the second match in the Premier League Summer Series when they surprised familiar foes in West Ham Utd at Soldier Field, but gave up two goals in defensive blunders. The match kicked off on Wednesday night, 30 July at 11:30 pm BST (5:30 pm CDT). New signing Adam Aznou has joined the US tour already after completing the deal yesterday, but he does not feature tonight. Everton wore their new away kit when they faced David Moyes's old side. Serious lack of depth in the Everton squad has seen Moyes make only limited use of replacements from the substitutes bench. Jarrad Branthwaite misses the entire tour due to an injury, while James Tarkowski and Michael Keane return to the squad after being deemed not fit enough to play against Burnemouh. Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko were pressed to form a defensive trio with Jake O’Brien. Michael Keane started the game after his absence at the weekend, partnering Jake O'Brien in a more recognisable back four. Jordan Pickford, James Garner and Carlos Alcaraz drop out after the last game, with Harrison Armstrong given a starting role . West Ham kicked off and Paqueta floored McNeil before Keane's backpass played in Marshall, forcing a save from Travers to save his embarrassment. McNeil pounced on a loose ball but drove it hard past Beto and out of play. Everton had some decent possession until the ball was scooped up to Beto who was well offside. Nice combination play between Ndiaye and McNeil looked to get the ball in to Gana. At the other end, Keane fouled Marshall and saw a ridiculous early yellow for a flailing elbow. Ward-Prowse drove the free-kick inches wide of the post. Patterson caught Diouf with a clumsy foul by the corner flag but wasn't booked. Nothing came of Ward-Prowse's free-kick and ensuing corner. On 17 minutes, Armstrong spotted a loose pass and drove forward confidently from centre-circle to penalty area, laying it off to Idrissa Gana Gueye whose low shot could not be saved, giving Everton the lead. Everton looked to attack again but Kilman was too strong for Patterson. Gueye looked to play in Patterson with a good ball down the wing but Patterson was again far too easily brushed aside by Kilman. Irving produced a wicked low snapshot that Travers got down to brilliantly to push it away as Gana stayed down injured after clashing with Potts. West Ham were getting more chances, a good set-up by Paqueta for Ward-Prowse was goal-bound but blocked away. Mykolenko won Everton's first corner after the half-hour, Ndiaye short to McNeil, a deep Patterson cross headed wide by Mykolenko. Ndiaye picked up a loose pass and drove forward all the way to the West Ham area, powering his shot into the covering defender. A lobbed ball into the Everton area saw Travers out to punch but Mykolenko put him off and he didn't connect properly. the ball dropped behind him for Paqueta to put it in the Everton net. Not a good look. McNeil fouled Potts on the edge of the Everton area, Paqueta slicing the free-kick off a defender as they played out 5 minutes of added time which saw Beto head over a hasty headed cross from O'Brien. David Moyes made an unprecedented three changes at the break, with countless changes for The Hammers. McNeil overhit a forward pass to Barry. Keane seemed to make the Everton defence look tentative, O'Brien heading a backpass initially beyond Travers. Alcaraz tried a nice one-two with Barry but lofted his shot way over the bar. A poor touch by Armstrong gifted the ball to Bowen. Everton's possession was laboured and largely unadventurous. Garner tried to whip in a ball for Barry but it was too far ahead of him. A McNeil free-kick wide left was punched out to Alcaraz but his shot was sliced badly wide. Barry headed Bowen's corner clear like he was Dominic Calvert-Lewin. A mix-up in the middle saw Paquta benefit and Fullkrug under minimal pressure drove a low shot into the corner beyond Travers, who dived in vain to his left, and West Ham took the lead. Play became very scrappy before the cooling break, when Tarkowski replaced Gana Gueye. Barry and Chermiti looked to combine through the middle but Paqueta stole it from the big new signing. McNeil's decent across to the far post was headed clear. A cross in from Mykolenko seemed to be contested between Alcaraz and Barry, neither getting on the ball. A West Ham free-kick saw Wan-Bissaka smash it into the side netting with Travers looking panicked. A corner from Garner seemed to fall at Keane's feet a few yards out but he could not get his foot through it. As Everton pushed for a late equalizer, Jake O'Brien powered a brilliant low cross in from the right that Barry should have burst the net with but he hadn't anticipated the pace of the ball. At the death, Orford came on for Paqueta and almost made it 3 for The Hammers, Travers denying him with a decent save to parry the ball away. From a late Everton corner, Heath got the ball in well but Barry was man-marked. Garner caught Guilherme from behind very late, nowhere near the ball: yellow card. And that ended another lacklustre training and fitness exercise for the depleted Blues. West Ham Utd: Foderingham, Walker-Peters (46' Wan-Bissaka), Casey (46' Fullkrug), Kilman (46' Aguerd), Mavropanos (85' Scarles), Diouf (46' Guilherme), Potts (46' Todibo), Ward-Prowse (46' Rodriguez), Irving (61' Soucek), Paquesta (90' Orford), Marshall (46' Bowen). Subs not Used: Areola, Cornet, Kante, Golambeckis, Fearon. Everton: Travers, Patterson (46' Alcaraz), O'Brien, Keane [Y:12'], Mykolenko, Gana (69' Tarkowski), Iroegbunam [Y:44'] (46' Garner [Y:90+4']), Armstrong, Ndiaye (70' Chermiti), McNeil (80' Heath), Beto (46' Barry). Everton so embarrassed… they don't name any on their Twitter team line-up!!!!But the Official Team sheet shows 11 this time, with Keane and Tarkowski now fit enough to participate... perhaps. Neil Copeland 2 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:38:28 Michael, we must be sharing them. James Marshall 3 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:40:27 We pretty much have 5 senior players on the bench and one of those is Pickford! Paul Kernot 4 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:41:32 Their subs bench is most of what will be their 1st team. No doubt they'll come on during the 2nd half. Meanwhile, Moyes may have shot out to buy some boots! Nicholas Randall 5 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:46:55 Orford is on the east coast in Tasmania. Peter Moore 6 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:48:59 COYB Michael Kenrick 7 Posted 30/07/2025 at 22:54:42 Maybe Moyes is holding some back for the second half, James, when some of those bigger names on the Hammers bench will replace the starting line-up.Nothing to stop Moyes playing a few more subs... except his own inimitable conservative nature! At least he's given Harrison Armstrong a starting role. Jack Convery 8 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:05:43 Panathinaikos are out of the Champions League. Does that mean we can sign their right back now? Vagiannis I think his name was, named after some sort of ladies problem. He'll cure our RB problem if he comes. Annika Herbert 9 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:13:04 I see Ishe Samuel-Smith has left Chelsea and signed for Strasbourg. That move didn't work out well for the lad. Ian Bennett 10 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:17:06 It's a sister club, Annika. Chelsea have had good success sending players to Strasbourg. Mike Gaynes 11 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:24:41 Not much of a crowd at the game. Kieran Kinsella 12 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:27:40 This commentator has twice now told us supposedly we are going head to head for players. Is that the only “fact” he prepped? Kieran Kinsella 13 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:29:34 Mike,Are you surprised? Fans here got fleeced for the Club World Cup all summer, only to see second rate Korean and New Zealand teams. Now a meaningless friendly on a hot afternoon? Annika Herbert 14 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:29:48 Ian @ 10, yes mate I know it's a sister club. But he has moved there on a permanent deal. It's not a loan deal Mike Gaynes 15 Posted 30/07/2025 at 23:57:09 Not surprised at all, Kieran. I tried to let down gently the folks on TW who thought we had a big fan base in the US. Neil Tyrrell 16 Posted 30/07/2025 at 00:04:04 Yep, Everton and West Ham aren't exactly the Grateful Dead (or the Bears) when it comes to filling an NFL stadium. Sad to say, but Manure v the RS would probably be a near sell-out. We can only chip away, it's a long way back to the top. Anthony Dwyer 17 Posted 31/07/2025 at 00:38:04 We do not have strength in depth at all, the defence is shocking without Tarkowski and Branthwaite. Of the 4 goals we have conceded, we have assisted 3 of them and failed to do the basics and close down quick enough for another.Patterson is shite, we have to get a replacement ASAP. I'm not sold on O'Brien either; Keane we all know about.I'd like to see Armstrong do more to get involved. Sean Kearns 18 Posted 31/07/2025 at 01:47:54 I took heat for watching this on my phone at the Mrs' birthday dinner!! And for what!… Travers is shit! Dave Abrahams 19 Posted 31/07/2025 at 01:55:53 Got up at 1:00 am for my first hit-and-miss of the night and decided to watch the last 25 minutes of the game. Not too bad a result… what was the performance like over the full match? Neil Tyrrell 20 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:14:56 There was absolutely nothing to get excited about, Dave.Woeful from both sides. Dave Abrahams 21 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:19:31 Neil (20), Thanks. I just had a quick look at the Live Forum and they seem to confirm what you've said. The need for more new gifted(?) players is getting greater with each game! Colin Malone 22 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:21:45 Sorry, Dwight, but you're a fucking shithouse. I've passed wind more than you've passed fullbacks. Neil Tyrrell 23 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:24:39 Dave, we finally scored a goal from open play but it was from a West Ham giveaway and their goalie still should have saved it. The best thing about the match was Liam renaming our backup keeper 'Traversty'. Ian Bennett 24 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:29:07 They'll have an option to buy back and a percentage sell-on as well, no doubt. It's a good standard and he should do well. Dave Abrahams 25 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:29:54 Neil (23), I'll have to watch him a few times before I can comment on him — if he's that bad, we'll have Traversty and Calamity competing for the goalie's shirt — looks like Calamity will keep it! Off back to bed now to wait for my second hit and miss of the night… for fuck's sake, what an exciting life I lead! Ed Prytherch 26 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:39:26 Young Issac Heath was bright for his little cameo. And to heck with a set-piece coach, our boys need a passing coach! Andy Mead 27 Posted 31/07/2025 at 02:47:46 That was poor.A Sunday league keeper would be embarrassed with that give away. Never mind pre-season, basic errors that pro footballers shouldn't do.Heath looked bright when he came on. McNeil and Patterson terrible. How can it be so hard to find a decent right-back? We are constantly giving the ball away and the only chance we created for our new forward was a lovely low cross from O'Brien which went begging. Never mind new players, the ones we have need to be able to do the basics and right now they can't. Lots of work to be done or it's going to be another long season, new stadium or not. Kieran Kinsella 28 Posted 31/07/2025 at 03:11:28 Dave,I concur. It was pretty bad, like Sunday league after a night out on the town. Wayward passes, lack of concentration, no communication, childish errors from both teams. Armstrong did well for the goal then later had Ross Barkley rabbit in the headlights moments. Keane had a Keane game and O'Brien again was ready to be his partner in crime. Tim tries but overcommits on tackles and no one reads his forward passes. Garner again underwhelmed to say the least. You know Beto is Beto. Barry looked lively but nothing produced. McNeil is teacher's pet — not sure why he's in the team. Patterson terrible as ever but Myko pushing him close as a headless chicken. Gueye got whacked early and never seemed to get back into it. Dreadful advert for the Premier League. No wonder there was a larger crowd on the Live Forum than in the stadium! But on the plus side I couldn't make it in person. A couple of years ago, we were even worse – getting spangled 4-1 by Inchy's Minneapolis team – so that I guess is the positive. That plus, without Dele, Calvert-Lewin, Mina, Gomes and Gbamin, tonight's lot earned a lot less for their “efforts”. Ernie Baywood 29 Posted 31/07/2025 at 03:28:47 I thought that was more embarrassing than the last game. Garner hacking down his opponent just highlighted how bad it was – can't compete, give up. But it's only pre season... David Currie 30 Posted 31/07/2025 at 03:49:52 Americans will have zero interest in becoming Everton fans; they choose their Premier League teams by looking at the League table first! If they decide on an English team, they have a choice of 5 or 6 clubs!! I thought Barry was poor and could not hold the ball up. The passing was awful and we were beaten by a better side. Tough game coming up on Sunday against Man Utd! Jim Bennings 31 Posted 31/07/2025 at 05:45:29 Why do we bother with these pointless jaunts to America? They never work, we are always shit, the playing surface is always shite, the stadiums half-full and the average fan has to stay out until the witching hour to see them.If we must travel, then we should be going to the Far East where we'd much much quicker get a fan base as they are more passionate about football than the Americans. But if anything ,we should learn our lesson and just stick to playing in Scotland away to Hearts, Celtic, Aberdeen and then maybe go and play one friendly in Spain.Anyway, not much to write home about, another shit show with no quality or pace going forward. It's only a friendly but we can see where we need players bringing in. Annika Herbert 32 Posted 31/07/2025 at 05:48:19 Good to see our backup keeper showing exactly why we paid £4M for him. But what terrible performance that was.Just over 2 weeks to the start of the new season and we look in poor shape. Leeds must be licking their lips watching these shit shows.Given what we have seen so far, it's looking more and more like yet another season of struggle. Andy Meighan 33 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:01:58 Dave @25.I take it when you say 'Calamity', you're referring to Pickford.Honestly, I can't believe I've just read that — he has numerous England caps and single-handedly kept us in the Premier League on at least 2 occasions.Dave, I want you to name me one single keeper that Everton could buy who would be a significant improvement on Pickford.I've got news for you, there isn't one, there really isn't.I love some of.our fans I really do. Jonathan Oppenheimer 34 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:11:12 As one of the few hundred Evertonians in the stadium, I can name a few positives from an otherwise awful display of football: 1) I got two days away with my 9-year-old, a father-son bonding experience like no other, explaining why we endure such crap displays from our beloved club; 2) the Lake Michigan cruise the night before was lovely, all joy meeting Seamus and Leighton and Inchy after a few adult beverages (him and me) — Seamus really is a class act like no other, took time to converse with every last guest; 3) Tarkowski was healthy enough to participate; 4) Harrison Armstrong, while making a few mistakes, one that nearly cost us a goal, looks like he can play a real part for us and is assured enough to give me confidence in his future. The rest of it? Mostly dreadful. We're left with four real class players — Pickford, Gana, Ndiaye and Branthwaite — and Gana plus Tarkowski could quickly lose a step with age. Given that, we're an injury or two away from another real relegation battle. I know I shouldn't freak out this early, but Moyes was just speaking the truth the other day regarding our need for new signings. Without a new right side and a new central midfielder with creativity, we'll be in real trouble to start the season. The scariest part is we'll have no choice soon but to either overpay for those new players or take a chance on somewhat unproven new players — or both — which could easily go wrong. As for the crowd, actually ended up being a decent number once all the Man Utd fans made it in. Apparently the traffic was awful getting to the stadium, plus who would want to watch the first match if they didn't have to? But yeah, having a great trip with my kid and have met some lovely fellow Evertonians along the way. Steve Brown 35 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:12:16 Annika, good point is well made.Looking forward to those who gave you pelters speaking up, as Dave A is right.A Traversty of a performance by the keeper. Mick O'Malley 36 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:21:22 Colin, agreed, he brings absolutely nothing to the team, he scores the odd goal but he is slow and so one footed, he always looks half asleep to me; definitely needs upgrading. I'm more worried about this season than I have been previously. We can't string any passes together. Garner also needs punting — he brings absolutely fuck-all to the side except sideways passing. Sam Hoare 37 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:26:32 Sounds like another turgid display; not great for the confidence or profile but ultimately not a strong marker for what to expect this season.Worth remembering that in 2004-05, when we finished 4th and gained a shot at the Champions League, we had a poor pre season having lost 2-1 to Crewe Alexandra, drew with a poor Burnley side, and got beat 3-1 by a Mexican team who were no great shakes before we eventually beat Sheffield Wednesday and drew with Real Sociedad. Jim Bennings 38 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:29:39 Garner and McNeil both get hyped up a lot; mainly symptomatic of the era we live in to be fair, where to certain people of a certain young age, everyone is amazing and a legend. If we rolled back the years to the pink Echo letter days of 25 years ago, they'd be spoken about in the same breath as Scott Gemmill, Idan Talk and John Oster etc etc.We need better if we are ever to move up that Premier League table. Steve Shave 39 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:36:39 I don't recall a single season when we have looked convincing pre-season.I'll hold back on pressing the panic button, I think. Billy Shears 40 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:42:21 Oh well... at least we scored!Sigh. Danny O'Neill 41 Posted 31/07/2025 at 06:53:52 Result and performance aside, I'm glad you had a good experience with your son Jonathan.I'm with Steve @39, no need to press the nuclear alert button.Positives to take from that?Gana scored!!! And that followed good anticipation from Armstrong to steal the ball, with his instinct being to run forward and drive at the defence. Then patience as he waited for support from the runner (Gana), before setting him up.Great delivery from O'Brien to put it on a plate for Barry. The striker opted to try to use his right foot from a right-sided cross. He was there and if he'd used his left to cushion it, that's in.Tarkowski getting 20 minutes. Good to see him back.I think that's about it.As for Travers, he made a couple of good early saves, but I'm not sure what he was thinking for the West Ham equaliser. He seemed to get caught in 2 minds. To me, it looked like the catch was on. He hesitated and went for the punch, which he messed up. Ernie Baywood 42 Posted 31/07/2025 at 07:02:52 Danny, it looked to me like he worried about colliding with Mykolenko. Which is pretty poor but maybe is a pre-season type thing. Derek Knox 43 Posted 31/07/2025 at 07:25:49 I keep hearing that the result is not so important in these pre-season frendlies… Well, that may be the case, but the overall performance was deplorable. They seemed to get worse as the game progressed. As has been mentioned, the passing was shocking. Coupled with our non-success (thus far) in the transfer market, it doesn't augur well for the forthcoming season, which is just over 2 weeks away. Unless we have a few incomings to improve us, I don't envisage anything other than a relegation struggle again. Danny O'Neill 44 Posted 31/07/2025 at 07:37:14 I think we are not alone in frustration with the transfer market. Newcastle and West Ham have not found it easy, with the Magpies struggling to keep hold of Isak. Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton all losing key players. And interestingly, on the back of their greatest achievement, stormy waters at Crystal Palace. Boardroom turmoil, courtroom appeal over Europe, manager going public over lack of transfer activity, and probably about to lose 2 key players. Colin Glassar 45 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:10:09 Apart from Liverpool and Arsenal, there's not a lot of deals going through, is there? Or am I just being blind? Moyes having a dig at the owners is a new thing for him. In his previous life under Kenwright, he was always the well behaved, toe-the-line disciple when it came to lack of funds for new players.Have the Yanks sold him London Bridge and he's just realising it? Mark Murphy 46 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:28:55 We'll be a completely different team with Tarkowski and Branthwaite back in front of Pickford. These games mean fuck-all. Grant Rorrison 47 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:29:44 We can write this season off. Even if we get the players Moyes wants before the start of it, he'll just say he didn't get them soon enough. Why do we keep signing and being linked with so many young players if he wants experienced ones? Fofana isn't experienced and most of the ones we've brought in aren't either. Ian Jones 48 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:42:28 Annika, I thought of you when West Ham's first goal went in!I think the same as Danny and Ernie. Caught between 2 minds, catch or punch and avoid Mykolenko and/or the West Ham player. As a debut, it could have gone better. Rob Dolby 49 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:44:59 Jonathan 34,Great you had a positive experience and built up some memories with your family.I only watched the first half before I went to bed. It wasn't a great game; West Ham where equally as bad although they did rest a few players from their starting 11.Why did we spend £4M on a sub goalie when we had Virginia on the books? Travers looks like a shot-stopper and obvious bad decision-maker.Keane gifted their striker a 1 v 1 in the space of 5 minutes but the goalie did well to save. The young West Ham striker looked quite lively.Armstrong looked so composed running half the length of the pitch and made the correct decision to play in Gana. 10 minutes later, Ndiaye was in a very similar position and made a poor decision in trying to shoot from the edge of the box when he had players around him.I assume Patterson is getting game time to prove to Moyes how awful he is. I honestly prefer Garner at right-back.We defo missed an opportunity not trying to pick up Walker Peters who isn't a work beater but is a steady 7 out of 10 every week. He kept McNeil quiet for the 1st half.Another uninspiring pre season. Moyes moaning about the squad size when we all knew the situation 12 months ago isn't great pre season for motivation. We need to go shopping where Brentford and Bournemouth go. Bring in unknowns with some hunger but that's too obvious isn't it. Just bring in bodies with prem experience would improve the squad, brownhill, coufal and Wilson.Got my emailed season ticket yesterday, even with the new ground my enthusiasm is low. Andrew Ellams 50 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:53:06 The idea that pre-season games mean nothing is nonsense. Apart from fitness they're massive for team cohesion and understanding and we don't have that.I get that we are short on numbers at the back right now for various reasons but we went backwards defensively after Moyes came in.It looks like we are in for another season where we will be playing catch-up by October. Kunal Desai 51 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:57:06 I wonder how much the owners have factored in and are willing to back Moyes given that he's only here for another season with the option to extend for a further season?Perhaps they don't want to commit significant amounts of investment for a manager who may not be here in 12 months time??? Ray Jacques 52 Posted 31/07/2025 at 08:59:27 We've had a problem at right-back for almost five seasons and it's still not sorted.I don't understand why they don't make the signings in time so that they can go on the pre-season tour??? Team bonding, tactics, different formations, combinations, etc, etc.It just seems a waste of time. No doubt we will be playing catch-up after half-a-dozen games, as per usual. Eric Myles 53 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:03:29 "We went backwards defensively after Moyes came in."Some people! 😵💫 Ryan Holroyd 54 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:09:31 So who's going to be the ‘Pistone' signing??? We can't be far away from Doucoure returning at this rate… Liam Mogan 55 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:18:32 Even at grassroots level, pre-season games are not just about fitness. Charles Brewer 56 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:28:28 Andrew, 50. Spot on, I'm afraid. All these games will do is to cement the idea that losing doesn't matter, your teammates are rubbish, and you'd better make sure you have a bombproof contract to keep paying you an inordinate amount — no matter how you or the team perform.Winners expect to win, losers expect to lose (if they are that bothered).I haven't seen Everton play a good match since Ancelotti left (and even then, it was before he was robbed). Paul Hewitt 57 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:33:05 So this trip to America, which was supposed to increase our popularity, has been a flop. An under-prepared squad. Piss-poor performances in empty stadiums… (Well, maybe not on Sunday when we play Man Utd!) John Hall 58 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:35:59 Kunal @ 51Would they risk relegation in their first season at the new ground? What a disaster that would be!Back him or sack him as we likely will be struggling without major additions having seen the pretty impressive recruitment additions at the three newly promoted clubs. The new owners need to put up and back Moyes. Failing that, we probably will face our usual relegation battle, having seen and witnessed our pre-season games. Robert Tressell 59 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:38:25 Ray # 52, I am sure we and all the other clubs struggling this window would love to have business wrapped up in good time for the season opener. However, it's been pointed out on here that the Sky TV money doesn't turn up until August so the market doesn't liven up until then. Sellers, agents and buyers then spend a couple of weeks playing brinkmanship and weighing up options before a high volume of deals start being done. It's a stupid system but there is not much you can do unless the club is very, very rich. We are not. As to our right-back woes, it gets me every season. A top quality right-back could help transform our team and style of play. I am a bit surprised and disappointed at how few links there are to new right-backs therefore. I remain optimistic though. Dave Abrahams 60 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:42:13 Robert (59) Can't they buy COD! Brian Harrison 61 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:47:16 I only watched the first 20 minutes and at least seen our goal, I guess reading reports it all went downhill from that point. Even the first 20 minutes it looked like we were a bunch of strangers who had met 10 minutes before kick off. There are so many who are just not good enough and unless our recruitment team work wonders in the next couple of weeks then it doesn't look great for the new season at this point. Peter Mills 62 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:47:28 A worrying defeat - Dave A (Hit and miss) 1 v 2 Peter M (Geoff Hurst). Lee Courtliff 63 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:48:45 "Backwards defensively when Moyes came in" ??????The only reason we were solid defensively under the Dinosaur is because we offered literally nothing going forwards. At all. We may have conceded a few but we certainly didn't ship goals for fun, and we didn't get battered by anyone. Not even away at Them or Chelsea. I'll never understand why managers like Dyche get credit for organising a defence, as any manager at that level could easily set his team up to defend deep and hope for the odd counter or set piece. It's the most basic we to play. I know we're all a bit frustrated but these games mean nothing, and I'm sure we'll have a few more signings done and dusted over the next few weeks. Tarks got 20 mins last night, Jarrod is being looked after back at FF, so as long as they're both fit for Leeds we'll be solid enough at the back. Even if it means O'Brien has to play RB again. Rob Halligan 64 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:51:54 Nothing to get too enthusiastic about the game last night. Plenty of posters lambasting Travers over the first goal, quite right as well as it was an awful error, but they seem to be forgetting that he made at least three great saves, one in the first 45 seconds after a very weak back pass by Keane giving their player a free run on goal. As for the goal itself, I personally think he had no need to come for it, but once committed he should have carried on, going through Mykolenko and whoever their player was, in his attempt to get to the ball. God knows how he managed to punch the ball onto his own head? Those questioning why was Joao Virginia allowed to leave? Well his contract was up and maybe he felt he should be playing regularly. Was he offered a new contract, I dont know, but either way maybe he felt it was time to move on.Patterson was Patterson……..shite. Looking at him it looks like hes put a bit of beef on. Has he been eating too much haggis in the close season? Two or three times in the first half he made runs down the right, one in particular when he got onto a pass, and having all the time in the world to put a cross in, dallied and let the defender block him. I doubt we will see him in a blue shirt again, and until we sign another right back, I think OBrien will play there, alongside Branthwaite and Tarkowski. I did say earlier in the week that a right back was not an immediate priority, but maybe it is. Watching McNeil, and did he really want to be there? A few times in the first half Mykolenko was playing balls down the channel for McNeil to run onto, or to Beto who lacked the support of McNeil. The scary thing is what you see is what we have. It will probably be near enough the same team on Sunday, except for Pickford being back in goal, and hopefully Tarkowski in alongside probably Keane with OBrien at right back. Might Aznou get a run out? The good thing is Branthwaite will be available for the Roma game, so should bring a bit of stability to the back four. Moyes has certainly got his work cut out in the next couple of weeks to get a few more bodies through the door, but its quality not quantity we need, so dont be buying for buying sake. Maitland-Niles at right back is not a bad shout, and yes I would bring Grealish in on loan, and hopefully Douglas Luiz. There are plenty out there, its just a question of finding them. I dont want us rushing out and doing a Leeds or Sunderland, overloading the squad with players who will take months to gel. Whatever, but I dont think its time to hit the panic button just yet! Michael Kenrick 65 Posted 31/07/2025 at 09:56:07 Rob @49, Ndiaye was in a very similar position and made a poor decision in trying to shoot from the edge of the box when he had players around him.I was so frustrated — again! — when I saw him do that. What is it about the decision-making of our forward players? The only explanation that suits my agenda to a tee is they are coached by someone who only knows about defense. Once a centre-back, always a centre-back. Dave Abrahams 66 Posted 31/07/2025 at 10:06:24 I dont know if Travers is good, bad or indifferent, only saw about 25 minutes of the game in which time he made a very good save after WHU broke away.To judge a ‘keeper for one bad mistake(?) isnt the thing to do, all ‘keepers, even the very best of them make howlers and lets be honest Pickford has made plenty of them along with his outstanding saves. Paul Hewitt 67 Posted 31/07/2025 at 10:09:01 Can't we just get a proper attacking coach?. It can't be that difficult?. Mark Murphy 69 Posted 31/07/2025 at 10:27:34 “Write this season off”Not picking on any one as this seems to be a recurring theme but what did people expect from this season? We finished last season strongly but have lost half a squad and need to rebuild. We wont get relegated but we were never going to take great strides into the top 10.If we finish around 13th and get our first season at our new ground out of the way I would say thats a fair season. We probably wont win anything again but“Writing it off” to me would mean relegation. And Ill bet my mortgage we dont get relegated. Mark Murphy 70 Posted 31/07/2025 at 10:38:52 The team that beat Newcastle away last league game v Probable v Leeds next Pickford. PickfordYoung. OBrienOBrien. TarkowskiKeane. BranthwaiteMyko. MykoGarner. GarnerGueye. GueyeHarrison. McNeil (?)Alcaraz. AlcarazNdiaye. NdiayeBeto. Beto Better imho.Thats if we bring no more in, in time.Im not worried about the early season games. Danny O'Neill 71 Posted 31/07/2025 at 10:57:24 Only a few tweaks, Mark, but that is already a better starting 11, before we sign anyone else, which will happen. You know me well and I think we can be a bit more ambitious. As I've mentioned before, with the much-admired "B" clubs losing their best players and Palace in something of a crisis at all levels, we can leapfrog those who finished above us last season.I'd keep an eye on Villa too. They may still have to sell to balance the books and avoid further penalties. This is double-edged as it isn't just the Premier League's PSR – they have to be compliant with Uefa's FFP given they are in European competition. John Raftery 72 Posted 31/07/2025 at 11:01:11 Michael (65),If he only knows about defence, perhaps he should concentrate on persuading his centre backs, O'Brien and Keane, to stop laying on back passes to the feet of opposing forwards. Scoring goals is clearly an issue. From what I could see from the TV coverage, a contributory factor is our inability to control play in midfield. As yet, we lack a midfield unit capable of dominating possession and crafting chances from that possession. We remain heavily reliant on catching the opposition with the sort of quick counterattack from which Armstrong created our goal. Stan Grace 73 Posted 31/07/2025 at 11:25:32 Sam #37, the Premier League was a very different animal 20 years ago and I don't believe that Moyes's 2004-05 Everton side would even finish in the Top 6 this season. (And before anyone with a tendency for stupid jokes like me says it, I'm imagining that team transported to now, not playing at the age of 40 or 50+, 20 years later.)Andy #33, like you, I would be interested to hear what better keepers than Pickford are around and why they are better. Of course he still makes occasional mistakes, but the amount of time he is directly involved in play, as well as the quality of team in front of him, need to be taken into account. I don't believe it's a coincidence that he has made only 1 error leading to a goal in over 70 games for England, when he's involved in the game less and has better quality to play alongside. Brian Wilkinson 74 Posted 31/07/2025 at 15:22:04 Certainly need a pacy right winger for sure. Also need that player that can sniff a goal out, can anticipate a cross coming in, I would send Chermiti out onloan, Betto and Barry look similar, none of the three fill me with them getting anywhere near 20 goals a seasonWe need a Vardy or Watkins type of player who can make chances for themselves, can put those half chances away.38 now Vardy but a year contract on a free would ceftainly give a bit of leaway time for Chermiti and Barry.Lets not sign overaged players or players near the end of their career I can imagine some saying, but if Guaye is good enough for another 2 season then I certainly think Vardy at 38 could still have another season or so left in him, if used as a squad player. Jay Harris 75 Posted 31/07/2025 at 16:33:23 Two points:-We need to stop giving the ball away.we need to stop stupid lackadaisical mistakes. Ian Bennett 76 Posted 31/07/2025 at 16:48:19 Thats some agenda MK. Poor decision making from Ndiaye, is from poor coaching from Moyes.. in what 6 months. These are professional international footballers, not some kid controlling his players on fifa. Footballers need to take responsibility for their performances, and Hammond & Kinnear need to take responsibility for not converting players identified into players signed. The carping that the manager is responsible for everything is clueless. Arne Slot ain't doing it all at Liverpool, he has great players, and Richard Hughes & Michael Edwards doing the business behind the scenes.
