A bizarre second-half saw Everton, reduced to nine men, draw 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It seemed like it would be smooth sailing for the Toffees when Michael Keane put them ahead with a clinical finish in the 17th minute after a difficult run of games at home lately. However, manager David Moyes completely fumbled the second half.

Instead of making changes to get the insurance goal or reassure his side as Wolves continued to grow into the game, Moyes dithered too long. Rob Edwards’ side made the pressure count with Mateus Mane keeping his composure and getting the equaliser in front of the away support.

What followed next was utterly ridiculous. Keane was absurdly sent off for having Tolu Arokodare’s hair in his grasp while going for an aerial duel. Rookie referee Thomas Kirk deemed the incident violent conduct after consultation with VAR and reviewing the pitchside monitor and the Everton centre-half now faces a three-game ban.

To make matters worse, Jack Grealish talked himself into the book and then just three minutes later, he too got his marching orders for sarcastically applauding the referee after winning the foul.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Blues hung on to secure a point in a game they would look back and think should’ve been won comfortably.

Here are the player ratings from Everton’s 1-1 draw with Wolves:

Jordan Pickford: 7.5

There was little Pickford could’ve done for the Mane shot that was slotted into the bottom corner. However, Pickford made a jaw-dropping save off Huego Bueno at full stretch, managing to send his long shot tipping over the bar.

Jake O’Brien: 6

O’Brien could’ve done better for the Wolves goal as the gap between him and Tarkowski was exploited by Mane. He was also conservative in possession.

James Tarkowski: 5

Tarkowski got away with a big mistake towards the end of the first half. He was partially at fault for the Wolves equaliser and failed to anticipate Mane’s movement and close the passing channel. The Everton captain could’ve probably done better to calm his teammates down following Keane’s sending off.

Michael Keane: 6

Keane was having a good game before the harsh sending off. The centre-half displayed his lethal instincts inside the box once again and reacted quickest to Iroegbunam’s shot, finding the back of the net with some aplomb. Keane also struck the post from Garner’s cross with a glancing header.

However, he was sent off for having a grab of Arokodare’s hair during an aerial duel, which VAR outrageously deemed violent conduct.

Vitalii Mykolenko: 6

Mykolenko had a decent chance to double Everton’s lead after being found in the box by Grealish but completely scuffed his shot before having a second stab at it and winning a corner. Had a solid defensive performance otherwise.

James Garner: 7

Everton’s opening goal came from Garner’s delivery. He could’ve also bagged an assist after Keane struck the post from his brilliant ball into the box. He often dropped deep to build play for his side and kept things ticking in the middle.

Tim Iroegbunam: 8

Tim Iroegbunam was easily Everton’s best player tonight. The Wolves midfield and defence found his forward runs difficult to deal with, winning the foul that led to the hosts’ opener. It was his scuffed shot that was diverted goalwards by Keane. Iroegbunam also showed authority while tackling and recovering possession, except for an instance when he had to take a booking after fouling Mane to avoid a counter.

Harrison Armstrong: 7 (replaced by Nathan Patterson at 87’)

It was an impressive performance from the teenager on his first start following his loan recall from Preston. Armstrong showed touches of class with a few outside-the-boot passes but some of his teammates weren’t on the same wavelength. He should take a lot of confidence from this match.

Dwight McNeil: 5 (replaced by Merlin Rohl at 90’)

Very little to write about McNeil’s performance, who was quiet on the right flank. Should’ve been taken off earlier to inject more energy into the game or shake things up because McNeil created little danger from his flank.

Thierno Barry: 5 (replaced by Beto at 87’)

Awfully quiet night for the Frenchman who had very little going for him. The fact that he had just one touch of the ball inside the opposition penalty box is a damning statistic. His night can probably be summed up by that wild shot/cross he attempted from an acute angle with no real conviction.

Jack Grealish: 4

Grealish had a pretty neat game before imploding shortly after the Keane incident. Talked his way into the referee’s book and the sarcastic applause afterwards was petulant and needless. Hard to defend a player of his experience, especially when the Blues are already short on players at such a pivotal juncture of the season.

Substitutions

Beto: N/A

Nathan Patterson: N/A

Merlin Rohl: N/A

I thought all of them were absolutely garbage for 70 percent of that game.

Can't give any of them more than a 5.

Well overgenerous with these ratings.

I think we could have played until midnight tomorrow and not scored a second goal even with 11 men.

One shot on target and one header on target at home to wolves absolutely fucking disgraceful, only harrison and tim deserved anything over a 5 and the moysiah a one he should have been left in history after the previous 12 years of dirge.

I did think Iroegbunam offered a useful direct threat but his instincts in and around the box let him down.

Interesting comment Anjishnu but I would have more respect for the article if you set out clearly what changes should have been made that would have enabled us to get the insurance goal.

Being behind the shot from Barry we all thought he was trying to do what Seamus did against Leeds a couple of seasons ago. Goalie was off his line and left a huge gap. Ball swerved away as it reached the goal.

If it had gone it we would be singing the praises to the rooftops.

Jim agreed, I must have watched a different game, I thought Garner was poor, Tim carried the ball well but ruined it with sloppy careless passing, Armstrong played ok first half but faded when we lost control of the game, Tarkowski is becoming a problem, very careless in possession, Thank God Pickford stood up to be counted at the end, a very poor performance among many at home this season

This disaster is all down to the players. Firstly, Keanes brain fart. Yes it was harsh but is as red under the strict rules of the game. Secondly and more importantly is the reaction of the players to the sending off. Instead of battening down the hatches as we did in Old Trafford we reacted like spoilt kids in a street league, and only for Pickfords worldly we would have lost the game.

Whats worse for me is that our cup game on Saturday now has us further depleted and I fear we have just now made the chance of a good cup run very difficult. Like all the teams we have played recently, Sunderland move the ball very fast which leaves us very exposed to counter attacks.

I was looking forward to the game on Saturday, now I am heading to the game with a lot of trepidation

Neil, sorry this was not all down to the players. Wolves were already back in the game and looking threatening.

Keane should have been sent off, I mean who does that?

Only 1 man should shoulder this and it's the manager.

Giving Grealish less marks than McNeil? Seriously? He got sent off late on and wouldn't have been, by an experienced ref.

Before that, he was the best passer on the field, including a pinpoint pass from one side of the pitch to the other, easily the best of the night. McNeil couldn't find his arse with a map!

Iroegbunam, whilst looking much better in a more forward role, still can't pass. He wasn't the best Everton player... he wasn't even the best central midfielder, that was Armstrong.

Is it concerning that we have not seen anything at all of The Friedkin Group at the matches yet?

I don't think we see or hear enough of where they want this club to go and be heading?

We are struggling because of missing players and a bare squad. When we have had good performances and decent results, there have been more players available to choose from.

Having said that, it was a tawdry performance with little structure, tactics, or enough threat. McNeil just isn't doing it for me, he doesn't look like he is interested, losing the ball too often, not chasing back fast enough, and not being creative enough. He's a liability.

Now we have suspensions to add to our woes, but seriously? Sent off for pulling hair? Appeal that one.

Mal - a PSG player was sent off in the Club World Cup Final for pulling Cucurella's hair.

Mind you, given his hairstyle, that was deserved... and if I could take a pair of scissors on the pitch, I would cut it all off.

Iroegbunam 8? Yes, first half...

Second half 3.

The ratings don't reflect how I saw this, and importantly, do not include the manager, who had a mare himself.

As Wolves came more into the game, it was clear that we were fading; Moyes does nothing. Wolves grow into the game more, Moyes does nothing.

It wasn't until his hand was forced by two mad moments on the pitch, and one on touch line, that he acted. I criticised Dyche for no Plan B or in-game adjustments; Moyes is just the same.

Only Armstrong and Iroegbunam were a small positive in that game and even then, only for the first hour. Grealish and Garner were well below par.

Mykolenko is League One level as a footballer at best, some comedy moments, and we know O'Brien cannot play full-back.

McNeil, who at one time looked a reasonable squad player, has been atrocious for a while now. How bad must Dibling be if he can't get in ahead of him?

Barry was invisible but frankly our lack of penetration and pace meant he had nothing to feed off. We probably have enough points accrued but in this game, we looked like prime relegation candidates.

Phil #12.

Let all the attacking players grow their hair long and waft it the face of the defenders.

It's clear obstruction because they can't see the ball. The rules need looking at.

My patience is running out with the defenders. They're unable to function in anything other than defending the 18-yard box.

O'Brien possibly stays, but not if he's defending like that. Right-back or centre-back, it was piss poor.

Stu. I disagree.

I missed the first half but, from the analysis of the first half, it looked like we were totally dominant and had a few other chances to score.

From what I saw in the second half, the same players were not energetic enough, we play at a pedestrian pace by default, and our dependency on Grealish holding up the ball contributes to this.

They dropped off the pace, not the Manager. So recognising this, who would you have brought in to counteract Wolves getting more into the game? Dibling instead of McNeil, Rohl instead of Armstrong or Iroegbunam? I'm not sure any of these would have changed the dynamic.

Patterson was brought on so that O'Brien could replace Keane in the centre and the usual Beto for Barry for me is a no-brainer as I still believe Barry need serious mentality development.

We still had the winning of the game, especially as Wolves opened up and looked very vulnerable in defence until Keane's sending off and Grealish's childish tantrum.

Look where that has left us for Saturday. Definitely down to the players.

And based on the last two performances, we seriously need to start getting some wins under our belt again.

As they say, winning is a habit. So, if we continue like the last 6 games with 5 points from 18, then we will be looking over our shoulders again.

Armstrong and Garner were Everton's best players. Tim Iroegbunam had his best game in a blue shirt. Pickford made a great save to keep it level. The rest were poor.

How bad has Tarkowski been of late? And don't get me started on the strikers, or should I say, the lack of strikers. Surely we have to get a right-back and a striker in this month.

When we get beat by the Mackems on Saturday, that's our season over in January again.
