Brennan Johnson has said the direction Everton are heading in convinced him to join the club.
Johnson has completed his move to the Toffees from Crystal Palace, in a swap deal that sees Dwight McNeil move in the opposite direction to Selhurst Park.
The Wales winger becomes Everton's fifth signing of the summer, following deals for Hayden Hackney, Christian Norgaard, and permanent moves for former loanees Merlin Röhl and Tyrique George. He will wear the number 22 shirt, with Kieran Dewsbury-Hall moving to eight.
Johnson has signed a four-year deal at Everton and said David Moyes's belief in his ability to regain his best form played a big part in his decision to move to Hill Dickinson.
“I'm so excited to be here. The Club speaks for itself – it's a massive club and one that when I first heard of the interest, I immediately wanted to come and be part of it," Johnson told evertonfc.com.
"There were a lot of reasons why I was so keen to join – the manager, the players, the direction the team is going in. You can see this is a club that wants to go in the right direction, and I'm a player who wants to go in that direction, too, so it feels like a really good match.
"I want to come in and show what I can do. The manager spoke to me about getting back to the form that I've shown previously, and that's a massive thing for me – the fact he knows and believes in what I can do. For me, listening to him – a manager who is so experienced and someone who has been so successful – it was really nice to hear.
"I want to bring all of my attributes. First and foremost, I'll work for the team, the fans, and represent the Club properly. I know that's something that's definitely appreciated and a non-negotiable here. They can expect that from me. On top of that, I think I can bring speed, goals and everything I've got.
"The incredible fanbase that Everton has, whether it's home or away, is something I've always felt. It's a massive honour to be here and play for them now."

A massive upgrade on McNeil.
Fast and an eye for goal. Other wingers take note.
3 Posted 11/08/2026 at 10:42:16
When the wages of the two players are taken into account, both on 4 year deals, it looks like we are paying about £15m more than Palace over the period. That just about covers the variation in perceived transfer values of the two players.

5 Posted 11/08/2026 at 10:59:41
He's younger than Dwight and frankly, if he hits his Forest and early Spurs form, then he's undoubtedly a better option than McNeil.
I hope and think he will do well. I would imagine also this probably signals the end of any likelihood that Jack Grealish will return to us now.
6 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:01:12
I hope we get 2-3 more recruits and finish the window with a bit of wow factor.
7 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:06:08
I wonder if he'll be so gung ho when he's asked to play right-back...
8 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:09:40
I expect an undisclosed fee statement to enable both clubs to maximise impact value in the Squad Cost Ratio -- usual thing of counting full transfer fee in this year's income and amortising the outgoing fee over 4 years.
This is a very interesting commercial deal and squad improvement. So again, kudos to Nick Hammond and Angus Kinnear for that matter. It means he can go back to TFG and ask for more funds without risking SCR infringements. Very clever!
9 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:10:01
Still need Jack Grealish, a right-back, and a striker or two.
10 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:12:23
That's interesting, did he not play as an auxiliary centre-back at Spurs when they had an injury crisis, or am I smoking and it was another youngster at Spurs?
11 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:14:04
Of course they could all be wrong, but let us hope the move to the North West of England gets this gifted player back on track.
It would be nice to get Daniel Munoz as well (unless there is a younger version we could recruit instead). Maybe ‘Hannibal' is reaching for his cigar case and his catchphrase will be apposite in the very near future?
12 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:15:21
A great bit of business. A solid signing this one.
13 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:21:13
Nick Hammond (Head of Player Trading): Directs player trading activities, deal structuring, and contract negotiations.
14 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:27:08
You make a fair point, Steve, you don't seem to hear too many negative thoughts about Moyes being here from potential players, quite the opposite it would seem.
Credit where credit is due to Moyes and the recruitment team for this rather bizarre but welcome piece of business. Another couple of signings and there could be some humble pie being served up on the menu.
15 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:31:55
Looking forward to seeing you play.
16 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:33:37
I met Hammond on a number of occasions when I worked in Reading and he's a nice fella, very personable, knows his stuff, a bright lad.
I thought it was Kinnear behind this. This has restored my faith somewhat knowing Hammond is doing the business behind these deals.
17 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:38:47
Not seeing these deals like Norgaard or Johnson in the press until more or less done, so hopefully they are working on a couple of others in the background.
I'm all for it, nothing worse than dragged-out deals. I said we should wait till the window "slams " shut to judge.
We all want business done... it seemed slow but they are clearly working in the shadows!!
18 Posted 11/08/2026 at 11:55:35
Thats really nice to hear -- having Googled him he worked with Angus at Leeds 2023-25 as a transfer advisor and previously at Newcastle, Celtic and WBA -- serious background and hugely knowledgeable.
So Angus has a big part to play in this with his Recruitment Team model. He likes to have deep experts in each area of the operation - hence a recruitment, deal maker and contract negotiator in Nick.
They also appear to lend heavily on a call with Moyes and the targeted players as part of the process, which is nice to hear.
19 Posted 11/08/2026 at 12:28:04
He seems like prime whipping boy material, insofar as he seems unsure, doesn't look like he wants the ball, but then he scores goals and assists consistently to a high level.
I think it's important to understand the type of player he is, if we want to avoid getting on his back early on. It seems it will feel like we're playing with 10 men a lot of the time, but we are basically airlifting 15 goals and 7 assists into our team if we can keep him fit.
A lot of them were saying "He's not good enough, he'd be useful for a team which plays with a low block. "
He sounds like just what we need, as long as we don't expect the wrong things from him. He's not going to show for the ball much, or take on his man. So the opposite of Illy, but with twice the goals and assists. That'll do me.
20 Posted 11/08/2026 at 12:43:45
I'm all for it too, David. People just need to accept that this is how these guys will be doing business. It seems this is how they have always operated and they are not going to change now, whether we like it or not.
We have no idea what is really going on in the background but, at the same time, it could well stop others from jumping in at the last minute and hijacking deals.
21 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:00:47
Are you thinking of Archie Gray?
22 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:01:08
He gives us another option wide right or as a striker, which is a godsend when you look at the two we have doing very little in terms of goalscoring.
23 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:11:19
Pickford
O'Brien Tarkowsi Keane Mykolenko
Garner Nørgaard
Johnson Dewsbury-Hall Ndiaye
Beto
As we all know, Moyes likes old players and these are our 11 oldest players with 4 of them over 30.
Bench: Barry, George, Dibling, Branthwaite, Röhl, Aznou, Ireogbunam, Harrison, Travers, all 24 and under except the goalie who is 27.
24 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:13:35
Something we have missed for a long time.
25 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:24:11
The team is picked on merit.
26 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:40:06
27 Posted 11/08/2026 at 13:58:23
There was a comment earlier that it's a bad deal because he's on £6M per year, but if you take into account, he's valued at £35M, McNeil at £20M who could have left for free next summer, plus his £2M salary, works out a lot less.
Munoz would be an excellent signing, but Glasner looking for a reunion as well, our problem is how much will we offer?
28 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:03:36
As for McNeil, he clearly deserved an honourable discharge.
29 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:19:50
Best news of the day! Unless Man Utd come in...
30 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:35:00
Wants to stay in the Premier League, not wants to stay at Everton. Saudi were going to pay top dollar. Man utd will be coming in at £45M.
31 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:41:00
Have you not seen that Moyes only ever picks on age and experience.
32 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:42:37
Say what you want about the Premier League, but they saved our skin.
33 Posted 11/08/2026 at 14:53:10
I think the whole thing was misdirection by Moshiri to get some dodgy slush fund money into the club.
34 Posted 11/08/2026 at 15:00:06
I also think he will start Barry over Beto.
35 Posted 11/08/2026 at 15:52:10
James Garner had surgery and won't be fit to start against Palace from reports. Also, I would expect Hayden Hackney to be involved, either in the starting lineup or from the bench.
36 Posted 11/08/2026 at 15:55:46
I have no idea how the Johnson deal will pan out, but I like it. Were adding a good mix of experience to go with our younger players. These are smart signings at reasonable fees that hopefully will allow us to splurge when necessary.
Phil, 23, in addition to Barry being preferred over Beto, and Branthwaite being in the squad, theres no chance Garner will be playing yet. It will be Hackney, Rohl or Armstrong, or possibly all three if Moyes allows Norgaard time to bed in, and plays Rohl at right back, so we dont have to see Tarkowski or Keane unless Jake or Jarrad are injured.
37 Posted 11/08/2026 at 16:09:43
The 22-year-old Portuguese was injured during Sunday's 2-1 home defeat to Hibernian as he collided with advertising boards following a jarring challenge.
A club announcement via social media states Chermiti "will be out of action for a significant period of time".
Unlucky as Galatasaray had tabled a bid for him just before the game, apparently his agent asked for him to not be included in the match.
38 Posted 11/08/2026 at 16:13:33
Assume he plays Pickford, the Brentford (a) back 4, Nidiaye, KDH, Röhl, Johnson, Barry and Nørgaard, the team averages 27½. Bring in Jimmy G for Nørgaard and buy Johnston and drop Tarks and the average goes to 26½ with only 32 year old Pickford over 30. Moyes is moving away from the all over 30 to a team who are all 24-27 (apart from Johnson). Not youngsters, not old, but players who have experience and could/should be around for a few years.
39 Posted 11/08/2026 at 16:29:42
Sometimes you get lucky with a real bargain such as Tim Cahill but most come, start brightly then fade very quickly after a few games.
We need goals and Johnson isn't a Harry Kane so we should hold our collective breath's to see how it works out.
The bottom line is he isn't costing anything but the burning question is who is going to score goals that win matches.
40 Posted 11/08/2026 at 16:37:41
He was the first of the new executives that Kinnear hired last summer.
He was in charge of getting KDH and Grealish in last August, and he proved his worth already this summer by saving the club about £15M up front with tough negotiating on the Hackney and George deals.
Now he's pulled off this highly unusual trade.
I am massively impressed.
41 Posted 11/08/2026 at 16:45:01
and he may not be Harry Kane, but he was Tottingham's top scorer when he left. From the wing.
if we need goals, we literally could not have bought a better winger.

47 Posted 11/08/2026 at 18:23:44
The dealings so far very clever and prudent. Hackney and George fees were lower than many expected, Norgaard could be the deal of the season for us at £7m thanks Arteta. Rohl already looks value, and now we have Johnson in a swap, it just keeps getting better.
I think the players pace cannot be underestimated whether we play him on the wing or as a striker ? That goal tally at Spurs and the combined transfer fees of £80m from the past must prove theres a player in there.
I still think that Jack will come on loan again and I think the same with Delap, I expect these to come late in the window.
Interesting to see who is next through the door ?
48 Posted 11/08/2026 at 18:48:08
Picks
NEW RB Jake Jarrad Myko
Norgaard
Rohl Armstrong KDH Ndiaye
Johnson
If no new RB put Rohl there switch Ndiaye to the right put KDH wide left and slot Hackney in although I don't think he is up to pace yet.
49 Posted 11/08/2026 at 18:56:36
Exiting Youth, experienced professional, ready made prem starter with pace.
Only really losing Gana & Mcneil up to now though, so I think somethings got to give, be it Tim & Alcaraz or Ndiaye or all 3..
Would be a bit spoiled if didn't get the RB now.
But get 1 and happy days.
Ndiaye probably rests on the grealish decision now, unless it's already been made.
If no big bids or big ( champions league) teams gave come for him, then maybe he's just going to roll his sleeves up and prove he's worth that big move.
That's what he should be doing if his dream moves not coming this window.
50 Posted 11/08/2026 at 19:13:07
It's also reported we originally offered £25M early in the window! Maybe there's hope yet?

52 Posted 11/08/2026 at 19:30:24
It isn't about us paying the money. Its about where he fancies living and playing football. Milan or Merseyside or wherever else offers a deal.
If he would come here, and bring Richarlison back with him, I'd be delighted. But I am not holding my breath.
Every RB in European football who is competing for a place at his current club has been linked with us this summer. I am sure one, possibly two will arrive by next week.
Ideally, one first choice. One utility player, who covers across the back four. A Phil Neville type maybe.
53 Posted 11/08/2026 at 19:36:40
I think that is fair comment.. why go with plan E or F, if A, B or C is still available. I think that is fsir comment if we want the club to get the best available option.
It is very easy to buy the easy option, and then 2 to 3 years time then try to move on that option as not meeting the original objective. Dumfries for Patterson Gabriel for Godfrey, Gerrard for Martyn etc etc. Buying the low down option has dogged Everton by buying inferior options.
54 Posted 11/08/2026 at 19:52:17
Brennan: " Oh, yuh bastard I forgot, pass it here"
Everton TV: "Brennan, Why was Everton the club for you?"
Brennan: "Buzzin, really happy to be here...sorry...two Secs..erm, here it is, erm, History, Stadium, Project, Fans, History again, Project direction, no brainer, Stadium and the stadiums project history direction"
Everton TV: "That's amazing, will be music to the ears for Evertonians. Here's your extremely bland training and first team kits for the season"
55 Posted 11/08/2026 at 20:09:42
I hope he plays him (BJ) as a Striker with Dibling /Ndiaye as a winger, not those two misfiring buffoons Bluto and Barry Humphries !
56 Posted 11/08/2026 at 20:43:25
Perhaps he can revitalise himself here but a bit of pace is no good on its own.
57 Posted 11/08/2026 at 20:50:06
However. this is not a normal window. And the squad that finished last season is currently, in my view, stronger than the one we now have. George and Hackney, I don't expect either to start currently. Most people won't see Johnson as an upgrade on Ndiaye (who is almost certainly leaving). We've currently not got Grealish, and have swapped Norgard for Gana (v debatable whether Norgard matches the Gana of last season). So whilst we may have secured some bargains, they aren't moving the needle. And the needle was in a pretty low position last season,
And this is on the business so far. But we still haven't addressed any of what most would describe as the critical issues. We still have no fullbacks. If Jarrad breaks down, we have currently no plan B. That's almost an entire defence currently up in the air, three weeks out from the window shutting.
58 Posted 11/08/2026 at 21:11:16
Im on my holidays so Ive been staying off ToffeeWeb, but for some reason that post has really made me smile!
I know it shouldnt, I come from an era when “nothing but the best” was good enough, but I suppose its just really pleasing to see how our new recruitment team are now full of due diligence!
The worrying part is how long the club are going to be able to hold onto the current recruitment team because it looks like they have identified everyone!!
59 Posted 11/08/2026 at 21:31:24
Lovely to see the Sex Pistols guitarist loading heaps of praise on the decorated historian of Ancient Greece. It does take two to tango though. My guess is that Palace pushed this deal through. They wanted him in January -- the Palace chairman called Dwight's lady ahead of time. I don't think that this needed too much work at our end. I somehow do not believe that we approached Palace to suggest this swap.
That said, I still cannot believe that Palace let us get away with this. I can't believe that Parish saw this as good business, unless wages were the issue, and that again reinforces the point that Palace were in the driving seat on this one.
It ain't that hard to say Stone the Crows, they want to swap Dwight for Brennan. Let's get it done before they change their mind. Someone send 'Yes' in a text.
I wish Dwight all the luck in the world. I'm very happy that we have Brennan with us.
60 Posted 11/08/2026 at 21:39:18
We've lost Gana, who's been good but can't go on at this level forever, and Dwight who hasn't been performing at this level forever.
Undoubtedly Grealish is a miss but, apart from that, the squad looks in a healthier position.
I'd hate the good work done to be undermined by not getting at least one full-back, which would leave a bad taste.
But after the last couple of deals coming out of the blue, I'm more confident.
61 Posted 11/08/2026 at 22:09:02
Individually, all 5 signings have taken the club forward. Individually it was right to call time on McNeil and Coleman, and Gana's wage demands were just too much for a player that needed replacing sooner rather than later (although I appreciated him hugely).
I am convinced a right-back will arrive, Grealish and a striker. Whether Ndiaye remains... let's see. Patterson is done, and I'd still be surprised if Beto and Iroegbunam aren't sold either.
The club is turning over the players, the age is coming down, and I think we are moving forward, albeit slowly, to a budget and with little fanfare.
62 Posted 11/08/2026 at 22:13:55
Youre spot on Ian. Which is why Brennan Johnson shouldnt be our signing - Jarrod Bowen should be. If the club wanted a wide forward to improve our team - Bowen is the stand out choice. Hes at an age and in a situation where we could have made a deal for Bowen. A proven, brilliant, Champions League class forward that would instantly improve us.
I remember a time when signing football players was more simple than it appears to be today. Go and get the best players from those below you or around you. Bowen fits that category.
Put it this way, hed have cost less than what we paid for Dibling and Alcaraz.
63 Posted 11/08/2026 at 22:19:25
They sold Fernandes and Somerville, and have that cash to keep Bowen.
64 Posted 11/08/2026 at 22:32:56
Squad improvement at this juncture? I'm like Kevin @57 very much doubtful we've actually moved forward yet, hopefully next few weeks change that.
Right-back… make your minds up what you want, there's plenty of options. Force Davey away from pragmatic conservatism and let's get an overlapping, goal assist contributing full-back, or two.

67 Posted 11/08/2026 at 23:40:04
68 Posted 11/08/2026 at 23:48:31
Excerpts from the analysis:
But here we have a genuine example of a swap deal between two Premier League sides, brokered by the same agency — Johnson and McNeil are both represented by Unique Sports Group (USG) — and with the players involved valued at the exact same level.
That valuation is still expected to be assessed by the Premier League under its fair market value protocol, but no money is expected to change hands.
And both Everton and Palace are likely to argue, to varying extents, that they have achieved a good outcome — or at least one that works for them.
Palace had residual interest in McNeil after that collapsed winter-window move, while Everton were keen to offload a player who had a year remaining on his contract. The preference was to move him on now, rather than extend the 26-year-olds deal.
Everton started this window valuing the attacking midfielder in the £15million ($20m) bracket, a sizeable amount given his contractual situation.
The Merseyside outfit were already on the lookout for a pacy right-winger who could stretch play and provide a goal threat when the chance to sign Johnson cropped up.
Everton had tracked the Wales international during former director of football Kevin Thelwells time at the club, coming close to a move before his then club Nottingham Forests promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.
There is an acceptance that it may take some time and hard work to get Johnson back to the player he was at Forest and then Tottenham after an underwhelming time at Palace following his arrival in last seasons winter window, but... there is a belief at Everton that they have a potential bargain in Johnson, should the 25-year-old rediscover his past form. Their research highlighted his scoring record at both Forest and Spurs... and ability to attack the back post and break lines with his runs. Johnson is viewed as a direct replacement for McNeil, who was a squad player rather than a guaranteed starter...
It is telling that Johnson was deemed surplus to requirements by Palace so soon after his £35million move from Spurs in early January — a club-record fee for Palace at the time. He made 13 league starts for the south London club, failed to score in 26 appearances across all competitions, and found himself out of the side before the end of the season.
The hope for Johnson and Everton is that Moyes system is more suited to maximising his talents. The same could be said for McNeil at Palace, given he enjoys drifting into central areas and striking at goal with his dangerous left foot.
For those reasons and more, the sense from many involved is that the deal works for all sides. It gives both players an opportunity to rediscover their form in contexts that should be more suited to their skill sets, and will hopefully provide them with a fresh lease on life.
After pulling out of the signing at the 11th hour on deadline day in February, something heavily criticised by McNeils partner Megan Sharpley at the time, Palace had to work hard with the player and his camp to convince him this was the right move. A new long-term deal and the chance to play Europa League football this season only helped their cause.
69 Posted 11/08/2026 at 23:58:21
70 Posted 11/08/2026 at 00:00:34
And honestly Spence went off my list after seeing him at the World Cup. His athleticism and pace are spectacular, but those forward rampages are totally non-productive -- no goals or assists last season for Spurs -- and he knows less about defensive positioning than I know about lyric opera.
The headless chicken routine we saw at the back for England was the reason his lost his place in Spurs' 11. And probably the reason they're selling him off.
71 Posted 11/08/2026 at 01:03:18
But to be fair, this is a fairly low risk punt and there is definitely a very good player in there, way better than McNeil, we saw that at Forest, and he offers the sort of pace we are desperate for. After a couple of ropey years, maybe he just needs a bit of TLC to blossom again, though that doesn't tend to be one of our manager's big strengths.
Munoz would be a great signing, despite his age, though I'm happy if they can find someone of equivalent quality and preferably a bit younger. And as we get ever closer to deadline day, I'll probably be happy with just any real right back with a pulse. I think the die is already set for O'Brien still at RB, even if we bought this week, Moyes likes to take his time 'integrating' them into the squad.
We could really use a LB and (obviously) a striker but I don't think we can stretch to that this window. Unless we can move on some of the ones on the margins, like Tim, Patterson and maybe Alcaraz.
While this latest swap looks like fair business to me, it has still been a bit underwhelming so far. I guess that reflects where we are in terms of financial firepower (i.e not much of it)
72 Posted 12/08/2026 at 02:00:17
The straight swap is an unexpected gift of things lining up. The players are represented by the same agency. The valuations, from the original clubs, were comparable when wages and time left in contract are considered. Most importantly, the receiving clubs see value in the players deployed into their systems.
Johnson seemed overwhelmed at Spurs, even as he was piling in the goals one season. I never saw him looking like he enjoyed the football. Maybe I missed better takes, but I saw some angry celebrations on some of those goals.
I haven't followed him at Palace. That was a 35mill record bit of business though. Now he's out and yes, there are many asking how the hell that happened.
There is immense upside for him and the club. He has no serious injury history and can play across the three forward positions. And he has a goal or two in him.
The three young forwards we have now make it unlikely we get caught sacrificing goals for cash. We know someone is coming for Ndiaye eventually. Now, we can play George and Johnson into roles where their claim could be made on being the talisman. And the Ndiaye funds could even support a gifted no.10 prospect if the striker market cannot provide.
73 Posted 12/08/2026 at 03:02:17
His trophy lifting days have just ended, because we don't do lifting pots not even a paltry league cup.
The club is jinxed young man, so I don't really know about going in the right direction.
74 Posted 12/08/2026 at 03:26:43
There are two sides to a transfer. Reading #40 it seems that it was us who did all the hard work.
Here's another way to think this through, remembering that neither you nor me nor anyone else on here for that matter knows nothing about the exact nuts and bolts of this swap.
Palace were in fact the primary instigator of this deal. Palace wanted DM in January but screwed up the paperwork side of things. Palace still wanted DM in February, March, April, May, June, July, and this month. Their chairman got in touch with Megan Sharpley to reassure her, we are told, before the deal was sprung. If, as some say, wages were an issue for Palace, then that is another reason to start the ball rolling.
For what it's worth, I don't believe that Everton got in touch to say 'hey let's swap DM for BJ'. I firmly believe that it was Palace who took the initiative here. And it is not beyond the bounds of the possible to think that Palace kept us in mind of their interest in DM.
A sharp job by our recruiters at this point might have been to express interest in Munoz for DM and cash rather than Johnson but (1) I wonder if Palace or Munoz would have been happy with this, and (2) Hammond (where is Cox in this story, by the way?) might have brought up Munoz in the early conversation.
Whatever, I'd much rather have BJ than DM, so I'm pleased. But, again with respect, I am a tad dubious about your one-way story.
Hope The Tempest went well. My second favourite Shakespeare play, but not the easiest to stage.

I just feel certain that whoever initiated the idea, Palace's recurrent interest in Dwight was matched by Everton's recurrent interest in Johnson, and that made it possible.
Munoz is new on the radar screen, and I hope both he and Palace are interested, because having those two bottle rockets on our right flank would be wildly entertaining. Serious pace at last.
BTW, Cox's primary portfolio is the Academy. He's part of the recruitment team, but I would assume that Hammond's partner in crime on this deal would have been Director of Scouting and Recruitment James Smith, the guy we hired away from City. And crime it will be if Johnson can return to form -- this is a heist in the making.
Tempest is this Saturday. Thanks for the encouragement.

Agree, I'm still wondering why Palace wanted this. They do seem to have been chasing Dwight for a little while. This could turn out to be the best bit of business for us over this window.
I would be happy right now with a right-back and a striker -- or two.
If Jake can be 'freed' for the middle of the defence, we don't need to buy there.
Thanks for the clarity on Cox.

I sincerely hope we prove them all wrong but I do have my doubts. The line-up for the Palace game should give us all an insight into Moyes's thinking for the season.
Of course, there is still time for the squad to be improved and added to. Fingers crossed.
79 Posted 12/08/2026 at 06:48:20
With this brand new recruitment team in place we should not be descending to desperation.
80 Posted 12/08/2026 at 07:06:09
Make sure you work hard and get back in position for your fullback -- but don't expect your fullback to be bombing on in support?
Let's just hope those options for right-back start getting fewer because the thought of watching O'Brien continuing in that position isn't a very good one.
Does the manager now trust Aznou? I hope he does because, if he doesn't, they are going to have to do something about it; otherwise, it'll be our best central defender or best midfielder deputising every time the average Mykolenko has to miss a game.

And here's a Palace fan who seems to be in seven minds:

Because it makes zero sense to me. What advantage do they gain? Am I missing something here?
Can they also investigate why we paid £27M for Cenk Tosun?
83 Posted 12/08/2026 at 07:45:22
Given the likely differential in wages between McNeil and Johnson, Palace reportedly save north of £15 million in wages over the next 4 years.

It's definitely a square deal financially. We're just getting a younger, faster and potentially better player.
BBC now reporting the Norton-Cuffy rumour. Never seen him. Can anybody fill me in?
89 Posted 12/08/2026 at 08:28:37
This is either going to book a nice gain on the sale of Mcneil, as his book value is practically nothing. Or johnson goes onto the books at a negligible value, with a reduced amortisation value for scr purposes on a player that cost £35-43m over his last two moves.
The Mcneil sale had to happen this summer. Everton weren't offering a new deal, and his value was £10-15m tops. Winter window £5-10m. With no other options, this was the best deal on the table.
Was Johnson a primary target, probably not. I liked Palaces move for him In January, as he is proven at the Premier league level, can play a couple of different positions and is young enough to impact games over the next 4 to 5 years.
Weve needed right wing pace and goals for an age. And weve got it. It comes in a slightly soiled box. But perhaps Arteta and Pienaar weren't a lot different back in the day. Moyes likes experienced ready players, and he likes a player with something to re-prove.
It is a low risk gamble. The upside is he hits the goal trail as before. The downside is his wages. The forgone transfer fee on Mcneil, should still be recoverable even if he bombs.
A championship or overseas club would still take a punt on a lad with 69 goals in 291 matches at 25 and as a winger. At that age he has probably outscored every winger that has been on the Everton books over the last 40 years. Hell he probably has a bettet record than nearly all of the strikers as well.

Meanwhile, our full-backs are mediocre, not trusted by the manager, or non-existent, and we still only have Barry and Beto to play No 9.
That we still haven't signed a right-back is shocking. Given Moyes's bizarre aversion to Patterson, we actually need to sign two.
It's been a really poor window so far, suggesting that no-one at the club has a plan or really knows what they're doing.
93 Posted 12/08/2026 at 10:57:10
Yes, I was mixing them up. I think both their dads played professionally - that and grey blonde moment - thanks for putting me right!
94 Posted 12/08/2026 at 10:57:57
What would we do with the money? Buy a better centre-forward, buy a quality right-back, buy an improved left-back.
I'd like to think that we have said to would-be suitors: "Do this business now so we can use the money to best effect." I fear it will be done at the death of the window and the money will remain in the coffers...
95 Posted 12/08/2026 at 11:00:43
Long may it continue.
96 Posted 12/08/2026 at 11:15:29
Reading yesterday that Jamie Vardy wants to return home. I'd take a punt on him for a season, he's well better than them two puddings up top masquerading as strikers.
97 Posted 12/08/2026 at 11:50:02
I'm just hoping the sound foundation of this window is capped off with a young right-back for future, an older Premier League expereinced right-back, fast goals machine Yilmaz (replacing Ndiaye), Parrott up top and Grealish to provide the gloss.
I also think we need to wake up to Ndiaye's comparative lack of end product. Very few assists from his dribbles.
Again, I'm not a Barry Basher and both have met their xG and 18 for one position, Number 9, is not our problem. Our problem is goals from wide positions, midfield, full-backs and centre-backs.
But I still think we should cash in and exit Beto.
98 Posted 12/08/2026 at 12:27:11
Season starts next week, we've got less than three weeks to sort out a whole lot of stuff. And has anyone heard any comment from the manager since last season ended?
99 Posted 12/08/2026 at 12:50:42
Here is our transfer window to date:
1) Hayden Hackney - a central midfielder who wlll sit on the bench.
2) Christan Norgaard - a 32 year old CDM to replace a 37 year old CDM.
3) Brennan Johnson - a winger with 2 goals and 1 assist last season, replacing a player with 0 goals and 1 assist, and adding £17 million in extra salary onto the wage bill.
4) Loans converted to purchase - Rohl and George who also sit on the bench.
5) Contract extensions for - try not to laugh - Keane and Mykolenko.
Meanwhile, we have still not signed a striker, a right-back or addressed the 8 goals and 9 assists to be replaced if Grealish and Ndiaye are not here next season.
This is a mid to lower table squad unless signficant progress is made. Big 3 weeks for the recruitment team.
If it doesnt work out, we can expect some sound-bites for the next 12 months - solid foundations, stabilty, consolidation, walk before we can run, Rome wasnt built in a day, start from the ground floor up etc etc.
100 Posted 12/08/2026 at 13:16:46
If we start the season with OBrien and Mykolenko as full-backs, then I might need therapy. Hopefully, as we read earlier, a decision will be made on a right-back now the options are fewer!
101 Posted 12/08/2026 at 13:30:58
They looked far better than what we had in the non Moyes years in most cases.
I cant knock the 5 transfers. £60m cash spent on 5 players is bargain basement prices, which seemingly is where we are. Chelsea and co would spend that on a single bench warmer or someone to loan out. That is the gulf at the moment.
102 Posted 12/08/2026 at 14:19:53
103 Posted 12/08/2026 at 17:11:21
Arteta a winger? He might have been stuck out on the wing playing out of position by Moyes, but he was a central midfielder.
You missed out every other “winger” who has played under Moyes in his 20+ years as a manager. Playing players out of position on the wing has been the managers MO for as long as his hair has been ginger. Provided they could track back, they got selected on the wing. He aint changing now, as Alcaraz, Rohl and Armstrong discovered last season playing on the flanks while Dibling and George watched from the bench.
As for your assessment of the summer window - “£60m cash spent on 5 players is bargain basement prices, which seemingly is where we are.” - I agree that we are shoppng for averages players at bargain basement prices.
That is not where we are commercially. It is an owners decision.
104 Posted 12/08/2026 at 20:38:52
Calm down! With or without Branthwaite, we will not be relegated with this squad -- even with Moyes in charge, I say.

Did The Moyesiah mention a right-back and centre-forward, to you by any chance?
