a) Fergy saw enough in him to sign him and he's not a bad judge of horseflesh (no pun intended)
b) Potentially terrific off the bench impact player,
c) He's commited to the local area beacuse of his racing interests so I imagine we'll not have to pay him ridiculous money (which he'll only when he plays anyway)
d) if he's not doing it then he wont get picked, or paid therefore, so what's the risk
e) Imagine how the scum would feel if he scored the winner at Analfield. That would make him a legend in the Super Danny G mould.

Unless Moyes is trying to get someone else and sees Owen as a last resort to boost numbers if his other targets don't work out.

Who knows? I guess in some respects it would be a similar signing to when we got Saha and that didn't work out too badly. I know Louis didn't play for the darkside, which I think is something which can cloud ones view of Michael Owen. That plus the fact he's a bit of a cock... But he might just have a few goals left in him and would only be back-up to Jelavic rather that our main striker.

I see this as very different to the Gazza / Ginola signings which showed desperation; this is just sensible back-up.

Don't forget this is a lad who grew up supporting Everton and dreamed of scoring goals in a blue shirt... That just maybe the one thing that will motivate him and stop him from 'just going through the motions'... after all it's not his fault the RS offered him a better deal than we did when he was a kid.

Let's remember Teddy Sheringham was written off (just like Owen is being now) when he joined Utd in '97 and he was 31; he turned out to be outstanding. Maybe just maybe Michael Owen can be the same for us...

Owen or Anichebe... I know who I would want in the team!

If it's on a pay as you play deal, or minimal wages, I don't see the harm. But if we are paying him 30,000 a week, it's a massive gamble. He knows how to score still, but his pace is gone and he is too injury prone.

I think he was way overplayed too young, hence the injury troubles. Especially being the kind of player he was, pure pace, sharpness, electric and a real finisher.

Strangle though, that kind of player is on the wane now and tend to be imapct sub players with the move to the more physically imposing and mobile lone strikers. The smaller poacher needs a partner, its why Defoe cant really get a proper gig anywhere. Chicarito at United (who looks like a transvestite who has pulled his wig off btw) is an impact bench player at United for me. You need to have the physicality to play up top. You need to be built like Drogba, Van Persie(he can do it all) and have the ability to link, hold and get in behind, ideally. Its why after a decent run of form someone like Bobby Zamora could get a call up for England. Welbeck looks decent, modern breed of that type.

However, Owen is just completely unloveable. He was brought up a selfish poacher, to think about himself and I feel he has really carried that mentality through all the way. He is a cut throat professional that puts himself first. Don't get me wrong when he plays he is extremely professional and he gives any team he plays for the best service he can, when fit. But I feel has carried that "me" ethos through his career, with his blatant England fixation and a clear regard for himself, still, as an "elite" footballer despite those days being long gone.

Some may say what responsibility does he have to anyone but himself and his family? Its a point I would take. However, I believe Owens ego and high regard for himself has actually hindered his career in the last few seasons.

An example of this could be seen in his Goals on Sunday interview yesterday. It was very interesting listening to him talk about the injuries and he made a lot of sense until.........he said that basically when he got in and playing he needed some games and the conditioning to build consistency/strength. Whatever his words were he basically meant a run of games and....... crucially, United wasnt conducive to that as he would get "10 minutes", then not get a game for weeks and then suddenly he would be starting in the cup final and, bang, no consistent football and he's injured again.

Well.........don't play for United then.

After the first season there it was clear he wasn't going to play much. He is, as he says, never short of offers. Play for a team where you are going to get some consistent football, where you could rehabilitate your body (and therefore your career) by gradually getting it used to consistent football again. It would have taken a season or so, there would have be no short cuts, but it was do-able.

Just like we treated Saha gently first season and were rewarded with his most consistent spell of football and goals for years in his second season. Saha got the benefit and was able to play top flight football more regularly than he has previously. But Saha was humble and accepted his circumstances.

Owens ego doesn't allow it. His "elite footballer" mentality meant he was happier in the shadows at United with people he regards his peers. In actuality though he stopped being part of that company years ago. He should have bit the bullet and dropped clubs and would probably have stood a much better chance of getting back in the England set up he was obsessed with if it had come off. But he couldn't handle that perceived drop in status. How long did he put off the Newcastle move? Michael doesnt do Newcastle!! Well, when they buy him an island, then he does!!!

If he comes here its cos he cant get anything else and its partly to extend the his top flight career, we're just about good enough for the Owen ego. We had a good record with Saha looking after a player who's body needed treating in a special kind of way and it benefitted both (although Saha should never have been given another deal, his 2nd season was as good as it was going to get for both).

It could work, it gives us an option we are goal shy, an impact bench player type. I will take it with a shrug. He doesn't represent genuine cover for Jelavic as he cant play lone so we still need that, unless Moyes is thinking that Big Vic is actually the cover!!

I'd say to Michael Owen £20,000 a week basic, then for every goal an extra £10,000 and £100,000 if you score the winner in the last minute against the Red Shite. Imagine the fucking Euphoria you'd feel if that actually happened. Tingling now just thinking about it.

Agree with Bobby (614) Owen has made some poor decisions when it comes to his football career. I'd rather have a decent goal hungry kid who still has a passion for the game - Zaha at Palace to name but one.

Either sign the fucker, at which point I will be taking anti-vomit tablets for at least one season, or tell us it's crap, at which point I can stop scratching this annoying Owen itch.

Injuries or not Michael Owen even half fit will get more goals than Anichebe and even Vellios for that matter (watched him and McAlaney against Tranmere the other night...both were awful !!)

I say get him for free and we can't lose....if he's fit and plays he gets paid...if he's not then he doesn't...but one things for sure...if he's fit and plays then he WILL score goals

You are quite clearly on drugs (or should be) if you think Owen at his best is better than Rooney. It might pain us to admit it but Rooney has not only proved himself to be an outstanding individual player for Man U but he has also matured into a complete team player willing to work for the team in a variety of positions.

I don't care that Owen played for the RS or Man U what I do care about is he has hardly played any football for years.

We have been very publicly after fire-power and Owen has been very publicly looking for a new club. He is in our price-range (FREE), lives in the area and supports the club; so I can't believe that it wasn't discussed by both parties much earlier in the summer.

I should think that Moyes and Owen sat down at some point in very early July and promptly stood up again when Davey mentioned a pay-as-you-play deal and Owen mentioned £50,000 a week, plus a reduced training schedule and guaranteed starts.
