Roberto Martinez on Constancy and Direction

Roberto Martinez has been talking more about his seemingly unique footballing philosophy, belying a resolute constancy of purpose that has a goal of achieving something without compromising his principles and concepts.

“As a manager I would never walk on my knees — I will never change my principles and concepts. It is hugely important you know exactly what you want, important to have that strength.”

“I won't change my football principles for results over the short period. That is a mistake because you are eventually going to get punished by abandoning your principles.

“You need to have courage to do that because of course a lot of football is very immediate and short-term. But you have to be true to yourself and your ideas. Otherwise you lose direction and that is when you are punished.

“In football, you get right and wrong moments, and that's what it was with Liverpool. But it is about concentrating on what is in front of us.

“I am not going to let anything distract from the vision we can do something special... and maybe it is destiny that Liverpool and Everton will compete for that 4th place.

“I know eventually we will get in the Champions League — it is because of the belief I have in the players and myself yes, but most importantly the belief I have in the chairman,” said Martinez.

“I came to Everton because I knew I would be allowed to be true to myself, to implement my philosophy, and be given the time to do that. That relationship with the chairman Bill Kenwright I value more than anything else.”

“What I have is direction,” he added. “You need a vision to want to achieve something, and then you share that aspiration. That is what drives you on day-to-day to be as good as you can. Nice or not.”
