We were warned not to expect much in the way of transfers this winter... and as we enter the final day of the transfer window, Angus Kinnear and David Moyes have proved to be true to their word.
There have been of course plenty of links claiming that a host of names are being courted as future stars to grace the fantastic Hill Dickinson Stadium... but none had got as far as the altar before the deadline.
The most consequential incoming move we have seen occurred early in the window, when Moyes recalled Harrison Armstrong from what was intended to be a season-long loan at Preston North End in the Championship. And it appears that the lad has done well enough to retain his place in the Everton first-team squad beyond today's deadline.
Everton apparently tried to pry Harry Wilson away from Fulham with an offer last week that was turned down by the Cottagers.
Everton have agreed a loan move for 19-year-old Chelsea winger Tyrique George to replace Jack Grealish, who is not expected to recover from a stress fracture in his foot before the end of the season. George completed his medical on Monday, but his Deadline Day arrival wasn't confirmed until well after the deadline.
Meanwhile, a slew of Everton Academy players have gone out on loan in the last month:
- Francis Okoronkwo has joined Doncaster Rovers in their quest to aviod relegation from League One;
- George Finney will spend the rest of the season north of the border at Ayr United;
- Will Tamen crossed the River Mersey to join Tranmere Rovers;
- George Morgan has gone to the south of France where he will play for fellow TFG club AS Cannes in the 4th tier of French football;
- Eli Campbell has joined League One strugglers Port Vale on loan;
- Martin Sherif has also joined Port Vale for the rest of the season after being recalled from his loan with Rotherham;
- And it seems Reece Welch may be added to this list with Hibernian expressing interest from the Scottish Premiership;
- Also followed by Jack Patterson, who has signed on loan for Polish club LKS Lodz until the end of the season.
There has been plenty of talk about the poorer players currently filling out the Everton squad seeking greener pastures elsewhere, but Everton have reportedly rejected a move to Juventus for Beto, while the futures at Everton for Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson were hanging in the balance only for nothing to transpire on the day; they both remain Everton players.
Perhaps the most surprising rumour was that Crystal Palace would be willing to stump up a remarkable fee of £20M for Dwight McNeil, who has had only one decent game this season. That was literally too good to be true... and the deal eventually collapsed.
Perhaps the most worrying of those stories is the claim that Everton are considering a deadline-day deal to sign Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips to bolster their squad, according to Caught Offside.
Everton are supposedly "monitoring the situation", as they don't want to pay Manchester City's current £10M asking price for a player with severe performance and injury issues in recent years.

Not sure hes a typical Moyes type, but Im pleased to see him. Will give us something different going forwards.
Pity there arent a couple more loan options in the pipeline, particularly full backs.

The approach is understood to have arrived last week but was turned down by the Cottagers.
Wilson is out of contract in the summer, when he can leave for nothing, but Fulham are adamant they do not want to sell the 28-year-old this month.
Talks over a new contract are currently on hold, but Fulham want to tie Wilson down to fresh terms.

No manager in the Premier League would give him a chance next season or any season after that. If he has not made it by now, he never will make a Premier League defender. Nothing to do with Moyes.
Should we feel sorry for Elijah? Will he now be condemned to a life of poverty? Well, yes because he will not fulfil his dreams. But he will be earning (probably) £250,000 per year. Only downside is he will have to give almost half of that to Rachel at Number 11. But he will have a far more comfortable life than most of us.

Haven't got any faith in rival clubs allowing their players to leave, and abroad may be more likely, clubs in italy are struggling financially so they might listen to offers, french clubs are selling clubs aswell.
The netherlands, belgium, switzerland and nordic countries have to be the market this month.
27 Posted 02/02/2026 at 11:10:27
I can understand Marco wanting to keep him until end of season but why cant Everton sign him and leave him at Fulham until next season ? The red shite and other clubs have done this a number of times.

Let him know if he waits for us in summer he can have 5 of the £15 million as a signing on fee.
The other 10 will pay his first two years wages

Isn't that the line Moyes used when he tried to sign Fellaini and Baines?

I'm not a big fan, but some enjoy it. The clubs have had since 1st January, yet wait until the end. Moyes' midnight oil will be burning until 6:59pm today!!
For Everton, incomings are anyone's 2nd guess, although the club has had an initial bid equiry for the Welsh winger / attacking midfielder, Wison.
I can an unqualified guess at outgoings, with the huge caveat I just don't know:
Charley Alcaraz. I.hope not, certainly not today. Maybe in the summer as he goes into his final contracted season, so club & player have a decision to make.
Illiman Ndaye. Totally gutted & not today, but summer is a possibility as he can play at a higher level. European quallification will be key to keeping him & attractin types of player that will improve us further.
Beto. If.the right offer from the right club comes in, both parties could be tempted. It would need immediate investment in a replacement, so unlikely for niow.
Aznou to be farmed out on loan??
So, strap in for the bi-annual wild gooose chase. Anyone's guess.
I tend to go with the don't expect much sentitiment.
36 Posted 02/02/2026 at 12:01:52
A decent film to watch would be The Searchers with John Wayne. maybe he could locate a right back for us.

Think Alan was in with Waynes agent.
Not needed at the time as was Moyes reference to the two players I mentioned when he was at Utd and made a stupid bid for both players.
"I know if id been Everton manager and Sir Alex came asking for Baines and Fellaini,id have found it very difficult to keep them,I always felt the right thing to do was what was right for the players"

But, as they believe they do not need one, it will be interesting to see if any more goals or assists come from the opposition left winger or Everton right winger gets backup from his right-back.

The Eagles have been exploring a move for the English winger. Nottingham Forest have also shown interest in reuniting McNeil with Sean Dyche.
Sky Sports News understands it would take something significant for them to let the winger go at this late stage.
They are also unlikely to accept a loan with the guarantee of a permanent option.
56 Posted 02/02/2026 at 16:26:26
Crazy the way a proven quality striker has thrown his playing career in the bin the last year or so, he's only 29 isn't he.
57 Posted 02/02/2026 at 16:31:04
There seems to be more on outgoing than incoming, and that's deeply worrying with a thin squad. 20 million for McNeil? Well, to cancel the money we might spend on George so that Saint Daniel the Absent will have spent fuck all on us. Unlike Roma, where he actually goes to matches.
58 Posted 02/02/2026 at 17:03:25
Do you think it's a good idea to go fishing for over-expensive deals in the limited January market? I don't. I'd rather we waited.
The issue with the right back has been going on since well before TFG took over. As long as Patterson sticks around, I'm quite happy to wait that one out until the summer when we'll get better value for money.
Do you think a quality striker is going to be available in this window at a price we can afford? And another winger? And a left back? I would imagine we'd have to offload players before we brought any of that wish list in.
It's a quiet window as most clubs have sussed out that it's over-priced and they often can't get the players they want anyway. Due to the improved form we've shown over the last year, we are not in the position of a West Ham or a Palace who are basically spending to stay up.
I think that's a better place for the club to be in. Don't you?

Would have loved to see a decent striker come in on loan but they don't grow on trees, especially in January. I am hoping Beto goes in the summer and our scouts have targets in hand for that position. Same for left back too.
As I said, our improved form has not left us vulnerable to hasty moves, I'm hoping we use that to our advantage when the time comes.

They've sold an unwanted player for a decent fee that's out of contract in 18 months time.
They've secured garner to a new contract.
They've signed a promising playe on loan, and can make it permanent if he impresses
They've added £20m cash to the balance sheet, which helps next summer.
That is all an improvement on 1st January.

Has it addressed the squad issues, no, but there isn't a huge number of players that have moved that I think we missed out on either.
I thought Connor Gallagher was a good move, but watching him yesterday, I think hes gone navkwards, bar a very good cross.
Brennan Johnson I thought was a decent move.
A couple of young Brazilians moved, guehi, Semenyo. But not a lot else.
Shame couldn't get Wilson. Proves good teams don't want to sell good players mid season.

I'll try to make this clear. Grealish will not play again this season, it seems, and whatever you might think of him, McNeil has left this parish. In actual numbers we are down one if George joins us to most likely have a three-handed poker game with Dibling and Aznou on the bench.
Ian, with respect, this is just lazy and misconceived: '. but there isn't a huge number of players that have moved that I think we missed out on either'. That really gets us off the hook? All those clubs were looking at the same pool of players? Whatever happened to individual endeavour and creativity? We've had five months since the last window to get a right-back in on loan.
You judge the quality of our

it's not about just identifying the player. The club who are selling also need to replace, so it's usually a huge chain. And if teams are facing relegation or Europe they won't feel like trading even if it's a good deal, look at Fulham with Wilson. And even if they are minded to, they won't do it until the last minute. We've had two come in, and two go out. So it's as you were.
113 Posted 02/02/2026 at 19:52:19
I mean this is why you don't buy in January!!!
This screams good business, can aznou, Dibbling or George not offer what mcneil has in the first half of the season?
This deal basically pays for merlin Rohl, I'd swap them if I was offered.
Is this Everton actually selling before players become worthless ??
I like it !!

116 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:01:26
It looks like we have got two different camps, the people who think TSF, are doing a very good job and the people who are bemused by the this sale because it leaves a very small squad even shorter on numbers, after the loss of Jack Grealish, the other week.
I shook my head when we werent active at the very beginning of this window, but this is because Id looked at the fixtures, looked at what a few victories could have done for the ‘desperate for success Evertonians with a few of our better players ready to return from injury and the AFCON, and realised that the saying about there being no time like the present, simply didnt apply to our owners this time around.
Maybe this will change in the future, but anyone who cant see that there was a real window of opportunity for us to really push on after we beat Forest, is obviously happy to see Everton, just making up the numbers?
Its gonna take time, a whole lot of precious time, so hopefully this kid from Chelsea, can give us a little bit of excitement🤞
117 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:02:59
So, reasonably I've looked at the players that have moved, and thought have we missed out.
Even momeyed teams buy in the bracket we are looking at. Look at the players city have signed from £25-50m. Its tough when youre 7-10th in the pecking order.

But we just need to focus on building for the future. I'd rather have Dibling playing and learning for the rest of this season, yeah he will make mistakes, but we are safe and not going to get into Europe, so let's just give the next generation game time.

We are mid table and making progress. Disappointed by the lack of signings but believe there is a long term plan in place.
I would sooner have this than previous windows where we wasted millions on shite players on big wages who we couldnt get rid of and an owner who interfered and ruined the club.
Leave Moyes alone to keep building and he can be replaced when the time is right.
Wonder if the much lauded Glasner can get a tune out of Dwight?

Joking aside. He was our key player at one point, his goals and assists went a long way to saving us and dyche.
I wish him well !
Hope this is a sign we can start offloading players when we can still get decent fees, rather than frees like so many before.

Or more young, promising, talents that aren't ready for the first team?
If I thought we would add more creative and attacking talent during the summer, plus a left and right back of course and then Moyes would at least ease off the defensive shackles, then I could actually get behind the man.
Sadly he has never shown any long term attacking intent and I don't expect him to change now

139 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:41:05
We all would like a right back, a left back, a gueye replacement and a couple of strikers, not because we don't have players there, but because the ones we have are pup.
As for names I would have liked osula on loan from newcastle, he was one of the best players in the last u21 euro's and even scored against the other lot, and he was up for grabs on loan.

145 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:51:39
The Premier League is wide open this season.
146 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:55:59
Champions League qualification is about 70 points typically, perhaps less this season, and probably 60-plus goals to get there.
I just don't see enough goals in the team with these players, with or without Moyes.
147 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:56:11
The time to worry would be if you allowed your expectation to be managed.
148 Posted 02/02/2026 at 20:58:34
We signed Barry, Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall in the summer plus Dibling, all attacking players. Again, we have awaited a decent centre-forward since Lukaku left.
I get the frustration but, outside the top 4 or 5 teams, no one in the Premier League plays gung-ho, attacking football.
We are not at the top level and can't compete financially. Look what Liverpool did in the summer, and Man City have done this January. We are millions and millions of pounds off this.
You can't deny that on the pitch we have progressed massively in the past 12 months. For example, last season early doors McNeil was one of our star players; now the majority are happy to see the back of him.
I do get it, but it's competitive and tight in the Premier League, you can't just attack, attack, attack or you will be beaten most weeks.
149 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:00:10
I hope Wilson wants to come in the summer though, I'd take Mateta too.

151 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:11:14
I know that Everton will become what they have been before once again but I just don't know when that will be. Without hope we have nothing... and without belief we might as well just give in.
I've jibbed going to a few games this season, and it's not because of the ground, it's because of the football. A new beginning but without real belief -- how can we expect much from our new owners when they haven't even taken the time to come and see us?
I've read the excuses, I understand the certain points of view for why it doesn't concern some people. I am also a person who understands that football is about many things but, for me, a club like Everton is all about emotion. (Coach welcome to rally a club that was dying on its feet.)
My emotions now are littered with boredom, a new beginning but a feeling that mediocrity has become acceptable to a lot of Evertonians, and a belief that things won't change until enough people demand more.
152 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:20:08
(With hindsight, conceding seven after turning up half pissed at Highbury, showed how the overall standards and professionalism of the club, had began to dwindle -- even though it was a fantastic achievement.)
We won at Villa 2 weeks ago with a narrow victory, and I'm certain if we could repeat the system that was used in every game, we would have been in the running for a Top 4 finish right now.
153 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:22:03
154 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:24:28
El Bobble confirms what Crook said. McNeil stays at Everton.
155 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:24:41
Depending on the deal, swapping McNeil for George makes sense but I only hope Moyes is fully signed up to play him. We do not need more Diblings and Aznous who are theoretically in our squad but Moyes clearly won't pick unless there is no other option with a pulse.
We've had years to sort out the full-backs and add pace out wide, and 3 TFG windows. You could say they are saving for a big summer splash or they are just stringing us along. At best, the jury is out on them and I think the summer window will be a very clear indicator of what we can expect and aspire to.
156 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:25:13
But this season we have a realistic chance to qualify for Europe, if the manager takes the handbrake off and we get a bit of luck. Who Dares Wins.
157 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:30:27
What did Dewsbury-Hall say about the second half against Leeds? We got closer to each other and we played with more aggression (not to mention how much this helps to engage the crowd). This is exactly why the system is so important, Mike, because it's one of the few times that we have seen Everton be hard to play against, whilst also posing a threat at the other end.
Hopefully Branthwaite's pace will enable us to play closer? It's not about playing deep or pressing high, it's about shutting off the space in between the lines. Well, that's how I see it anyway.
158 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:31:26
Just countering the rather silly sentiment that we are now weaker than we were on 1 January.
159 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:32:28
George deal is done. He looks good in our shirt.
160 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:33:36
Wibble.
161 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:36:21
Weve also kept Dwight (and not got £20M for it) so every silver lining has a cloud. 😂
162 Posted 02/02/2026 at 21:47:27
Going through a perfect season winning 1-nil every week is a really tall ask given the set pieces, VAR and huge amounts of injury time these days. Certainly a lot harder than 2005.
For me, you need more than that to achieve. You have to be defensively sound, but you've got to have goals in you. You have to have a Plan B when Plan A isn't working. And that's why I think we are short.

165 Posted 02/02/2026 at 22:00:12
Im curious as to why you are so keen to start Aznou. I havent seen anything from him to believe he is an improvement on what we have except his short cameo against Sunderland. He was just in front of me at that game and was full of enthusiasm but for me the jury is way out. My thoughts on him were already expressed in an earlier post on this thread @102
166 Posted 02/02/2026 at 22:13:04
Just said the same thing in the McNeil.thread. unbelievably poor from our new hierarchy
167 Posted 02/02/2026 at 22:13:44
As for McNeil, maybe despite the clerical error there is a verbal agreement to resurrect in the summer.
As for the ongoing saga at full-back, I will be fascinated to see who eventually ends up playing left- or right-back... and if the manager says, "This is the player we wanted but we had to wait."
I hope it's worth the wait!!
168 Posted 02/02/2026 at 22:16:09
I saw a lad full of running, enthusiasm and somebody who is not scared to take on players.
169 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:06:06
At least weve signed another wide player. Maybe the lesser spotted Dibling gets a bit more game time.
170 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:07:26
The lad only had 6 months remaining on his contract so cost just £2.5 million. So there were bargains put there if we really wanted them.
Why bother though, when you can just use 4 centre backs in defence
171 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:13:43
172 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:14:53
No cross into box, he won a dubious penalty while losing the ball and falling over in the box. But the big questions are can he retain the ball the ball and use it constructively or will he lose it and we are back peddling and secondly can he defend. For me as I said already he reminded me of Doucs and we all know how popular he became. Yes I would love to see what he can do but I do not want to sew us become totally exposed and he then becomes the latest whipping boy.
173 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:19:07
174 Posted 02/02/2026 at 23:41:50
But we do pay recruitment staff vast sums of money to know and if after 3 windows, there really isn't a better left-back than Mykolenko out there in the big wide world, then the world is a very strange place.
As you say, can such a left-back retain the ball and use it constructively because you need progressive full-backs in modern football. We know Mykolenko can't. He's a plucky backs-against-the-wall defender.
175 Posted 03/02/2026 at 02:12:03
I suppose he will play in the cup games...
176 Posted 03/02/2026 at 03:07:21
'We've needed a right-back for 5 years so it's unfair to put that on Moyes.'
Hang on, Ray, this makes no sense at all. So, Moyes and the recruiters get off the hook for not signing a right-back because we have not done so for 5 years? Nonsense.
177 Posted 03/02/2026 at 03:13:51
Spot on, Tony. I remember Mr Gaynes in one of his misguided defences of his corporate heroes answering this point by listing five clubs, I believe it was, whose owners in his counterblast did not go to the matches.
He was dead wrong about two of them at least and the hilarious thing was that he seemed to have forgotten that Saint Daniel the Absent does go to Roma matches. You couldn't make it up.
178 Posted 03/02/2026 at 05:53:26
I never suggested he was better than Mykolenko. My point was there were bargains to be had in the January window. When many on here were telling us there weren't.
But do you know if he is better, or not? So are you banging the same old drum?
179 Posted 03/02/2026 at 06:39:48
And don't forget, we had Tete on the line in the summer but that didn't happen (and btw, I've not seen him earning rave reviews since).
As I said, I'm disappointed; we could've pushed for Europe, but I'd rather we shopped wisely than in haste.
180 Posted 03/02/2026 at 06:43:14
.
So did I mate, but playing Devil's Advocate here, Moyes saw a raw young lad lose the ball twice trying to dribble when he could've kept possession.
Hopefully his time will come.
181 Posted 03/02/2026 at 07:05:07
Well considering TFG bought a Super Duper Moneyball analytics team, they should surely be able to tell us these things?
182 Posted 03/02/2026 at 07:22:10
Apparently he is highly rated but I have no idea if he is better than Aznou, never mind Mykolenko. But, at that price, surely worth a gamble?
But he is apparently quite attack-minded. Not a Moyes type player at all...
183 Posted 03/02/2026 at 07:24:36
If you take out the players that wouldn't come and the 30 somethings, and those that you know that arent better than weve got, then there isn't many players youd go for that we havent been linked with.
From it, you can see the recruitment team are either faced with plucking a promising kid with no experience, or a bit of an average lad. Norton-Cuffy seems the best of the rest, but his performance ratings and attacking output haven't been great. That seems to be the case bar the Swedish lad that went to Juventus.
Perhaps have a look yourself, before moaning we have signed this or that. We all know the problem, finding the answer is the hard bit.
184 Posted 03/02/2026 at 07:26:46
We could be using plan A-B or even C, imo Ian, because I don't see many things that I can identify from week to week, except that we are very rigid.
185 Posted 03/02/2026 at 07:32:15
He may be “a find” but, just because another team buys a cheap right-back, it doesn't mean we could've or should've done the same.
We may have looked at him and said "No thanks". We may have approached him and he said "No thanks". He may be great, he may be shite.
I'm hoping we're being selective rather than lazy and biding our time for the right players. We've opted for some shite fill-ins in the past.

188 Posted 03/02/2026 at 11:45:40
The only clout supporters have is physical protest or stop paying to attend Everton games, but that's cutting your nose off to spite your face.
Other than that, most realise that owners of clubs down the pecking order are now limited in what they can spend even when they want to sign better players.
That's the barrier that kills expectation and ambition.
189 Posted 03/02/2026 at 22:54:41
I was just making the point that there were bargains to have during the January transfer window.
But, if he does turn out to be a poor buy, I will deny ever having mentioned him!
I think he's a left-back though, not a right-back. I have also done a little more checking on him and some of his coaches think he may be better suited as a left-sided midfielder
190 Posted 03/02/2026 at 23:00:43
But, now I fully understand you are always correct in all footballing matters, I shall check with you before I express my opinions.
Maybe you should take a good look at yourself before diving in with criticism that doesn't match your opinion?
191 Posted 04/02/2026 at 02:12:03
The Athletic reports tonight (US time) that we made approaches for two right-backs in this window, Strasbourg's Guela Doue and Genoa's Brooke Norton-Cuffy, but the timing wasn't right for either deal. Both stayed with their clubs and we may go back in for either or both in the summer.
Here's a line from Paddy Boyland's article guaranteed to drive a lot of people here absolutely crazy:
'David Moyes sets the bar high when it comes to assessing right-back targets and Jake O'Brien has earned the manager's faith in a makeshift role.'
192 Posted 04/02/2026 at 10:16:21
Definitely worth a gamble for £2.5M though. Not that I was suggesting Everton should have been in for him. I was just stating that there were bargains to be had.

Another midfield kid should not be our top priority.
