Martinez takes 'keeper search off the table

Roberto Martinez says that signing a goalkeeper is no longer a priority, arguing that Everton are "really strong" in that position.

The manager had admitted during the last transfer window that he might be forced to move forward his search for a long-term replacement for Tim Howard and there was speculation surrounding potential moves for Cardiff's David Marshall and Norwegian international Orjan Nyland.

An injury to Tim Howard between late December and early February had left the Blues with Joel Robles as the club's only 'keeper with first-team experience. That, coupled with the American's poor form and advancing years, seemed to indicate that Everton needed to start looking to the future.

Although fresh reports from Norway this week claimed that Everton scout Bryan King was in attendance with a number of other clubs to watch Nyland in action for Molde this past week and held conversations with his agent Jim Solbakken, Martinez told the press today that he will not be looking for a goalkeeper this summer.

"We are really strong in that position," the Catalan said, adding weight to similar comments he made last week in which he suggested that the likes of Russell Griffiths and Jindrich Stanek would soon be in a position to move up from the Academy and provide more competition.

Waiting for more doom and gloom; we really do need a top quality keeper.

Don’t know how to feel about this. On the one hand it could be a good thing because our youngsters look promising, and I have confidence in Robles. On the other hand we should be looking to sell Howard, and cash in on an American icon while he still has value, getting in a replacement.

Then again we’re not a monied club, so we have to prioritise I guess.

Relax

Martinez has shown himself to be a very shrewd judge when it comes to Goalies...

Thank God I know this manager talks out of both sides of his mouth with neither side being believable.

Fucka me!!

It seems every single day Martinez comes out with another load of gobbledygook.

Really strong in that area??
Despite the fact that the Bearded Circus One never commands his box and is never far from an absolute rick.

Robles was just about building up some confidence through playing consistently until Martinez takes him out, no doubt if he’s called upon next season again he will look seriously rusty, but what can you expect when a player goes through a season expecting no more than a handful of appearances?

It smacks to me Martinez is happy to plod on with too many of David Moyes players, they are tried and tested failures, haven’t been good enough to push on time the next level in the last 8 years and they are unlikely to produce anything better now.

I agree with all the postings above assuming that Darren’s @5 was tongue in cheek! I just wish that the club was looking for a replacement manager, preferably one that amongst his other attributes knows how to evaluate existing and needed players. I wouldn’t trust Relegation Roberto with the money down the back of my sofa.

Don’t need to add much more here. Martinez must be deluded if he thinks we’re ’really strong’ in that area.

I agree with Jay Harris that there is obviously no money available. Even Martinez must know we are weak in n that department. What little he has he must need for elsewhere.

Last season Roberto was a breath of fresh air. Now he just depresses me with every inane uttering he comes out with,is he suffering from some sort of nervous breakdown, or doesn’t he think before he makes the most ridiculous statements, starting to feel sorry for him now.

Most managers keep schtum when talking about their transfer targets. This might be a smokescreen by Martinez to throw off any possible poachers of his real targets and intentions.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, he comes out with the statement ’we are strong in that area’ – UNBELIEVABLE. Tim Howard at 36 shouldn’t even be No 1 choice. When is the last time he came and caught a cross from a corner??

When Robles played and kept 3 clean sheets and our back four were a lot more confident, he brought Tim back after injury which went completely against what MOST managers do which is,’ the player in form keeps his place’.

Under Bob, it’s harder get in the team than get out of it. Howard & Barry are perfect examples and he kept picking Alcaraz until it got too embarrassing. Totally disillusioned. A new keeper is a must Bob.

The downward management of expectations has started a bit early hasn’t it?

Booby tends to talk a lot of bollocks but I hope what he’s trying to say is that a GK is lower down the list of priorities and that other positions need looking at more urgently. I.e. CB, Str, creative CM and a decent wide player.

Then again, decent GK is actually quite important and Howard should be packed off to the MLS. There’s a lot of decent GKs about who are better than Howard.

Pretty sure Roberto has to be selective in how he spends his "ample" funds. Howard and Robles is what we have, for now.

Has anyone here got a good look at Russell Griffiths and Jindrich Stanek? Opinions?

Dave Abrahams

Russell Griffiths could become a very good keeper but is only 20 years of age, so very inexperienced. I haven’t seen Stanic but I think Robles deserves another chance.

I think he has earned it.

I wish he would stay quiet for a week. What will he come out with next!!, how about he is going to make Aiden McGeady captain for next season as he is going to be the mainstay of the team for the next 5 years.

The lunatic is well and truly in charge of the asylum. An aging and unreliable first choice, an understudy who looked like he was ready to take his place but whose confidence will again be at its lowest after being dropped following three clean sheets, and two kids who haven’t a hope of making Martinez’s first team squad, and the crazy man in charge says we’re "very strong" in that department? He must be the only adult in the city of Liverpool who cannot see that Tim Howard has become an unacceptable liability to the team.

How many more howlers does he have to make before Martinez sees what the rest of us have seen all season? Relegation Roberto is definitely a good name for this insane idiot who will in all probability drag us into another far more serious relegation struggle next season. He is by far the worst manager I can remember in 56 years supporting this great club. He is destroying us with almost grim certainty.

There are probably better keepers than Tim available on free transfers, for God’s sake. That’s how far he has fallen, and only Martinez can’t see it.

(Brian Porter 21) I’ve been watching them for 62 years and I agree with everything you say except the line "Tim Howard has become an unacceptable liability to the team". I think he has always been an unaccepted liability.
Brian Porter

Paul, @24. Agree with you entirely. Perhaps I should have said, "Tim Howard has become even more of an unacceptable liability to the team." He can’t hold a candle to men like big Nev, and my teen hero between the sticks, the always underrated (in my opinion), but very safe, Gordon West, who like Southall knew how to command his area and his defence.

I can’t remember who we were playing, but a defensive mix up almost led to us conceding a goal and Gordon turned on the defenders concerned, I think it was Tommy Wright and Brian Labone of all people and gave them a right verbal rocket. I could have sworn both those lad’s faces went red at the end of his tirade, and we hadn’t actually conceded. Imagine if we had. I think it was Ray Wilson who had a quiet word with all three before the resulting corner, which I think big Brian headed clear with such ferocity the ball went clear out of play on the half-way line.

Now, that’s what I call commanding your area, Tim Howard, are you listening?

Brian Porter #21, I’m not sure if Martinez is the worst manager ever to have managed Everton. I think Mike Walker and Kendall Mk III were – in my years of being a fan – the worst.

While we were unlikely to get relegated under Moyes (who is in some ways like Allardyce), the football was quite dire most of the time.

We are also very strong in the forward department so no need to strengthen there either. Could be a very chilled transfer window for Blind Bobby

Brian Porter: "He is by far the worst manager I can remember in 56 years supporting this great club." As Terence says above, did you not watch us when Mike Walker or Kendall Mk III were in charge then? Christ I saw some shite then, worse than this season.

Roberto must have been told by BK, we’re skint so do your stuff and baffle the punters with a statement, Roberto has duly obliged. That’s how I read Roberto’s latest mantra about our keepers.

I actually think Tim has been a decent keeper and a great servant, apart from this season, when at times he has begun to show his age. Of course he needs replacing for next season.

The big test for Robles is when his confidence goes, that happens to all keepers, and it’s how he copes that will show his true character and ability, so I have my doubts about him, we need a new top keeper.

No James, you have Howard and two young keepers and then Robles. The first is why you don’t need a new keeper.

I love Tim Howard, great servant to the club, but finished.

Martinez is killing us.
