The Leaving of Goodison

by   |   02/05/2025  31 Comments  [Jump to last]

I've written new words to the old sea shanty The Leaving Of Liverpool. It was supposedly first heard around 1870.

Feel free to add your ideas, and remember, it's the tune of The Leaving Of Liverpool – not Lilly the Pink! 😀

Farewell to my seat in Bullens Road and the pillars say that I can't see
I am off to the majestic Bramley-Moore Dock by the banks of the blue Mersey

So fare thee well, my true blue love
And the holy trinity
It's not the leaving of Goodison that grieves me
But my Dixie when I think of thee.

I have seen the greats at Goodison, Temple, Southall, Ball and Sheedy
But you will never ever see again the greatest one, our Dixie

So fare thee well, my true blue love
And the holy trinity
It's not the leaving of Goodison that grieves me
But my Daddy when I think of thee.

We have won the league's the cups and all and and beat the old enemy

We have seen that all at Goodison never forget the old lady

So fare thee well, my true blue love
And the holy trinity
It's not the leaving of Goodison that grieves me
But my Mammy when I think of thee.

Goodbye to Goodison Road and Bullens Road, and old Gwladys Street
The Winslow, The Abbey and The Brick, but The Spellow was the one for me

So fare thee well, my true blue love
And the holy trinity
It's not the leaving of Goodison that grieves me
But my Dixie when I think of thee.

So off we go to seasons new and what will be will be
For its off to our new home at Bramley-Moore Dock and the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey.

So fare thee well, my true blue love
And the holy trinity
It's not the leaving of Goodison that grieves me
But my Dixie when I think of thee.

Being an old timer, the first thing that took my breath away was looking up at the Main Stand, back in the late 50's. Also the old Park End. Then the bulldozers came in.

Does any one remember the copper Black beard. The urchins were terrified of him. Too handy with the truncheon, me thinks!!

The Leaving of Liverpool is one of my favourites Paul, closely followed by In my Liverpool Home.

Maybe your next release can be to that tune, but titled "In my Everton Home".

I remember the League Champions season of 1969-70. I think it was a 2-nil win against West Bromwich Albion.

I'm not sure but, if I'm right, that was the last game in the old main stand and I took a spanner along to unscrew my seat and take it home.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I did steal my seat. I was only a pre-teenager. 😀

Paul, it was 2-0. Think it might have been Alan Whittle with the first but I know the 2nd was Colin Harvey.

Did I see it? No, I was on a school trip to London and my mother went instead. That and the Palace game at the start of the season the only ones I missed.

Hence the mad dash along the M62 in 1985 to see us get the trophy when we played West Ham.

Paul great lyrics, I looked for your song this morning after reading your post but I couldn't find it.

Just arrived home from today's game and you have managed to lift my spirits. Do you know why it went missing?

Danny mentioning In My Liverpool Home reminded me of an EP from the 60s The Singing City; it featured all three songs plus Maggie May and Dirty Old Town.

My own favourite shanty is Whip Jamboree.

Geoff,

Thanks, mate – really appreciate your words.

Danny asked me to put some lyrics to In My Liverpool Home, which started today and I'm half thorough.

Not heard Shanty is Whip Jamboree, who's that by?

Was the game that bad? Lol

Just my mood after throwing away another 2-point lead.

In My Everton Home, methinks we're turning into The Toffee Web Spinners

On the musical theme, remember the playing of Bella Ciao at Goodison a couple of years ago?

I have no idea about it's relevance or historical context, and why it was played, but it sounded good.

Maybe it's because I lived in Italy and my dog is called Bella.

" Paul, Great lyrics " What?????

The pink Echo used to "accommodate" this sort of toe curling nonsense and the "lyricist" from the red side of this city would line up to make complete twats of themselves.

Sorry Paul. I know you can be a funny man and I like that you often, skilfully, walk a very fine line, but you are better than this twee self-indulgent nonsense.

If you are going to annihilate an old Liverpool folk song, do it with the barbed wire God instilled into your DNA

Scousers (as opposed to kopites) don't do Twee.

Danny,

A Latin commentator, I can't remember where from, started singing it after Calvert-Lewin's penalty at Newcastle.

Colin, sorry you don't like it.

I was just sitting thinking about Goodison closing and thought about putting words to our situation of going to our new ground. I am a musician and have written songs all my life.

You say scouses don't do twee… ever heard of the Beatles? They are the twee of twee, most of the early songs were. Don't you like them because of the tweenes?

And the last time I checked, I think they were scousers, all four of them. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull said he found the Beatles songs a bit twee.

Imagine if every songwriter listened to your criticising, songs would never be written. But thanks for the comments, Colin. All the best, mate.

I have just remembered the words to a terrace song, it used to be sung to the Chorus of "in our Liverpool home" in the mid sixties.

In our Goodison home, In our Goodison home

We have 5 forwards exceedingly small

One that is World Class his name is Ball

They play to the chorus of God bless them all

In our Goodison home

Colin just one last word on this. I wrote the lyrics along to the tune and style of the leaving of Liverpool, it was meant to be the sea shanty type of song, it was intentionally meant as that, only refering to Everton. Even Bob Dylan stole the song and melody in 1963 and rewrote the lyrics for his song farewell.

All I'm say, oh, it's fare thee well my darlin' true
I'm leaving' in the first hour of the morn
I'm bound off for the bay of Mexico
Or maybe the coast of Californ
So it's fare thee well my own true love
We'll meet another day, another time
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind, by Dylan.

So I didn't mean it as some great beatlesque piece, just my thoughts on the situation. Criticising yes, everything can be criticised, but "twee self indulgent nonsense" being a complete twat? Bit strong don't you think.

I have just been looking at an online version that includes the sheet music for the songs.

There is an Access Goodison video of yesterday's celebration on YouTube, really emotional.

Love those lyrics.

As a Birkenhead lad, I used to sing. It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me — it's the fact that I've gotta come back! 🥳💙

Les, it was picked up yesterday on the pre-match thread around 12:05 just after the programme started. I must have tuned in at around 12:30 just as the RS lovefest started, so lost interest, but apparently good stuff earlier with Leon and Big Duncan. and an interview with Moyes a bit later.

Worth a re-watch on the iPlayer?

Give it a rest, Paul, lad.

I accepted Brian's point that I was a tad harsh in post 14, but I won't be coming back to apologise every time your bottom lip starts quivering again.

Twee was acceptable in the sixties. Everything from Movies, Sit Coms, Magazines and yes, music — with the possible exception of Jethro Tull, but even they were living in the past.

If you tried to peddle this song on the streets today, people would walk past you in their droves. Even on a very busy forum like this, you would be lucky if half-a-dozen people bothered to respond. (Well done for at least achieving that!)

Your apparent wounding has taken me by surprise. For somebody who really likes to play rough on here, you are coming across as incredibly overly sensitive. But when you stick an article up on a website, you have to accept it won't be everyone's cup of tea. You have to expect that not everyone is going to love it.

I'm glad you told me you are a musician. It kind of explains the sensitive response but to be honest, mate, I sincerely hope you are not trying to make a living as a lyricist.

Paul Kossoff
28 Posted 05/05/2025 at 15:43:28
Colin, yes, we musicians are over the top sensitive in anything we write or play, me more than anyone else.

Yes, you are more than entitled to your opinions my friend. I'll shut up now and say no more, I'm okay with your comments, they don't bother me at all. I can accept them… but if you criticise me one more time, I swear I'll…!!!

Oh um, er, must go lie down.☺️

Paul Kossoff
29 Posted 05/05/2025 at 16:12:15
Colin, actually I'm a multi instrumentalist. Proficient in drums, all styles of guitar, bass guitar, piano, classically trained. Not really a lyricist. Just saying.

Oh, I'm left-handed but I can play a guitar upside down like Hendrix – only a few can do that!

But I don't like blowing my own trumpet, which is one instrument I can't play.😀

How about Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli
singing " Time to say goodbye" (to Goodison.)
60 years of the Bullens road and Gladwys street have left an indelible mark..

As for Everton, I think of Tina Turner singing
"The best"
Better than all the rest, better than any team I've ever met.
