Everton release squad numbers for 2016-17 season

, 2 August, 50comments  |  Jump to most recent
After a 24-hour delay to accommodate the confirmation of Idrissa Gueye as an Everton player, the club have released the official list of squad numbers for the new season.

Among the highlights are some welcome changes to the traditional numbers worn by regular first-team players, with Gerard Deulofeu taking the № 7 jersey, Ross Barkley № 8 and Gueye № 17.

Romelu Lukaku keeps his № 10 shirt, Bryan Oviedo moves to № 20 and Muhamed Besic takes № 21, while Tom Davies and Kieran Dowell's promotions to the first-team are confirmed by № 26 and № 28 respectively.

Maarten Stekelenburg and Shani Tarashaj will wear the №s 22 and 24 that they have been sporting in the recent friendlies.

Tellingly, neither Oumar Niasse nor Aiden McGeady have been assigned shirt numbers while Leandro Rodriguez appears to have been moved back to the Academy.

Luke Garbutt's omission from the list has raised eyebrows, however. The England U21 left back spent last season on loan with Fulham but has been playing with Everton's U23s in pre-season.

The full squad list for 2016-17 is as follows:

1. Joel Robles
3. Leighton Baines
4. Darron Gibson
5. John Stones
6. Phil Jagielka
7. Gerard Deulofeu
8. Ross Barkley
9. Arouna Kone
10. Romelu Lukaku
11. Kevin Mirallas
12. Aaron Lennon
15. Tom Cleverley
16. James McCarthy
17. Idrissa Gueye
18. Gareth Barry
20. Bryan Oviedo
21. Muhamed Besic
22. Maarten Stekelenburg
23. Seamus Coleman
24. Shani Tarashaj
25. Ramiro Funes Mori
26. Tom Davies
27. Tyias Browning
28. Kieran Dowell
30. Mason Holgate
32. Brendan Galloway
38. Matthew Pennington
39. Conor Grant

Hope the stores will be prepared for returned shirts with those number changes.

Great to see Geri and Ross given such significant shirt numbers.

McGeady didn't even get a number by the looks of it.

Very happy with the changes.

What am I going to do with my Niasse shirt now?

McGeady, Niasse and Garbutt didn't get numbers. Anyone I missed?

Ledson not in the crop to be in contention this year after so much talk about him.

Agreed, Kone retaining the #9 is a shocker.

Garbutt, Niasse, McGeady, McAleny all appear to be surplus to requirements. No numbers for Connolly, Ledson, Kenny... can we assume they have been deemed not yet of first team standard?

Interesting that Besic has been moved to accommodate Gueye or did he just prefer Osman's number?

Agreed that Ross's and Geri's promotions are a show of faith.

I see Gueye get's Rom's old number 17 from when he first came to the club. Could be a good sign!

On the Lukaku subject, I really can't think of a better club to take to the cleaners than Chelsea! They are renowned for being the worst in buying players strictly for their sell-on value ONLY!

Also... Everton should add an extra £10m to the £75m in response to Chelsea's ultimatum! The Cheeky Chavs!!!

Carl #8

I'd assume he preferred Osman's old number. He has been wearing it all pre-season before we were even linked with Gueye.

Why do we not have a No 2??

Niasse, oh dear, has to be the worst piece of transfer business in the 138-year history of the club, Martinez or whomever was responsible should hang their head in shame.

As for Garbutt I don't think the lad has got what it takes to play in the EPL, struggled last year in a lower league and yes I know he got injured but obviously not deemed good enough by the management.

Looks like it's been kept for a in coming player Eric, possibly Williams. Great that Ross and Geri have been giving big numbers. Very strange that Kone still keeps № 9.

Eric (11) some may argue we have too many number two's in the squad?

Eric

Most of the team played like a great big No 2 last season.

Will McGeady and Niasse run down their contracts, I wonder. Can't see any club in their right mind wanting to take them on similar wages to what they have now.

The club may have to bite the bullet and offer them lump some incentives to leave. At least McGeady 'only' has another 2 years left but Niasse's contract runs to 2020 – at £55k/week!

What's happened to the rumoured loan deal to Galatasaray?

It's crazy to see 12 months go by, and Garbutt going from top prospect to unwanted no-mark.

I really feel for Luke as he only wanted to go out on loan to gain first-team experience.

I feel the lad is talented, and should be given a chance. His set pieces are outstanding, he should be kept over Oviedo, IMO.

There's quite a slew of Academy Players who had shirt numbers previously but are not listed here. We're retaining them for the moment as 'Academy Players' on the current ToffeeWeb Squad Page.

However, the likes of Rodriguez as well as some of the others listed above who appear to have been bumped, suggests there will be a raft of departures announced shortly.

Thomas (6) maybe the likes of Ledson, Garbutt and possibly Kenny are being sent out on loan again this season, I wouldn't write them off just yet.

Can't see any logic in Seamus not being № 2 unless he is on his way.
Chris Sinnott
23 Posted 02/08/2016 at 20:46:54
Tony (22) - the fact that Coleman has been our first choice right back for a few years now, and during that time has worn the number 23 shirt, probably means he won't be going anywhere.

The days of players wearing 1-11 are long gone.
Mark Tanton

Tony, can it not be that Seamus has an attachment to № 23?

I'm disappointed Garbutt isn't on the list. I'd rather give him a run over Baines who is past his best and Oveido who is very average. Garbutt is a more physical defender with great deliveries into the box and would seem like the most natural replacement for Baines.

In a market of inflated prices, we will have to spend a lot to get someone better in my opinion. Galloway could be a decent option at left back but maybe Galloway would be a better fit at centre back in time.

Seems Garbutt is not in the plans... Real shame as, like others, I thought he was exceptional when he was given those runs 2 seasons back. Really looked a player... I feel he still is.

The very young players I wouldn't expect to be announced with numbers. It does look like bad news for Luke Garbutt though, which is a shame as I thought he'd shown real promise at times, especially creating chances.

I do think we've left some numbers open for new signings. Doesn't Ashley Williams like to wear No 2?

Gareth Clark
32 Posted 02/08/2016 at 21:30:34
Keep number 9 and Gibson's number 4 for new signings - I would have preferred at least.

Gibson and Kone can have squad numbers - but not #4 and #9!

1 - Butland (Robles is never going to be a first choice keeper at any decent Club & doesn't deserve the #1 jersey)

2 - Williams (would prefer Coleman in the number 2, but understand he loves wearing 23 for Everton)

4 - Koulibaly

9 - Icardi/Chicarito

13 - Witsel

14 - Ziyech

19 - Iheancho (him + £40 mil for Stones)

29 - Garbutt (should be second choice to Baines & replace him over time)

Let a man dream! No supporter wouldn't be happy with this haha

Dean (#15), Really laughed at your comment! Bit of № 2 preseason as well!

I can only think Kone is holding someone hostage to retain № 9!

When you think who has worn that shirt number in the past, it is a total travesty. What are they thinking!

Ian Horan
34 Posted 02/08/2016 at 22:01:13
Moshiri should call Chelsea's bluff!!, swop Lukaku for £55 mill plus Bergovic and Remy. That then on paper equates to £70 to 75 mill. Everyone keeps face. Stones to City.

The Nigerian youngster Inchaeon? And £40 mill. Again good deal all round. Still leaving the £100 million and £95 mill profit on the transfer of three players in two out.

It's strange that we get all intrigued about something as innocent as squad numbers. But I'm another who sits there and looks for the meanings.

Pleased to see Ross at 8. He can make that shirt legendary. Likewise Del at 7.

Disappointing that Kone is still number 9. Feels like it's disrespecting our history.

Seamus obviously likes the 23. Either because it's the number he's previously worn or because it's a famous sporting number.

Chris @23 and Mark @24 – call me old-fashioned but, to me, № 2 is the only number for your first choice right back and always will be. Perhaps it's an Irish superstition.

Koeman pointedly hasn't sacked Kone. The manager must see something in training, that we don't see on the pitch.

No.13 must be being kept for an Italian who look upon that number as being lucky.

42 Posted 03/08/2016 at 11:27:29
I wonder if Kone will be better off under Koeman. He looks a lot fitter and just maybe he can recover that form that saw him bag 16 in a season for Wigan. Everton will wait to the last minute to sign players, getting the maximum for both Stones and Lukaku.

With Mirallas and Deulofeu spearheading the attack and midfielders getting forward, the reliance on a big lump centre forward may be over. Both Kev and Geri have pace to burn and can play more direct through the middle. Even Kone has a turn of pace.

Colin (#12).

Niasse is poor but us older blues still wince at the mention of Rod Belfitt.

44 Posted 03/08/2016 at 13:57:39
Eric @2

I think we are saving the number 2 shirt for Bruno Martins Indi.

Carl @8

Mo asked for Ossies old number.

Number 5 will be for the star signing who will replace Stones.

Hopefully numbers 10 & 14 will be for Traore & Remy if we play hardball.

Now that the ressies are Under-23, not 21, & have 22 league games, plus at least 6 games in the EFL trophy & at least 6 games in the International Cup, plus of course the Lancashire & Liverpool Senior Cups, the players staying will get more than enough games without the need in sending our best youngsters out on loan.

What has happened to Garbutt at Fulham? Two seasons ago he was pushing the then England left back for his place in the team, we were told his dead ball skills were of the highest class. Now he seems to be surplus to requirements. This really does smack of one of those stories that are within the club and we know nothing of what's happening.
Terence Tyler
48 Posted 04/08/2016 at 14:37:30
Rick. We gave Garbutt a new contract last year, because he showed some early promise, and looked good with dead ball situations. and put some good crosses in.

However he didn't set the world alight at Fulham. He also had some injury issues and an attitude issue which resulted in him being subbed in one game in the first half, a situation in which he later issued an apology to the club.

All-in-all, I think he is not going to make the top grade; he probably looked better than he was at the time due to our poor form, and poor management of the first-choice players.

Derek Thomas

Terence@48; Not exactly how it happened, when it all comes out about the vindictiveness from Martinez...and it will. All will be revealed and not just Garbutt, who blotted his copybook with those naïve comments Re. the Newcastle game.

Distin, Eto'o, Mirallas, Baines...don't even start me on the whole Niasse thing.

Suffice it to say, Mike Walker has lost his tag as the worst manager ever, by a long, long, way.

Koeman has his work cut out and will earn every penny - and IMO, will be well advised not to panic buy this window/season, but see if he can inject some discipline into the squad and find a middle ground between, while he sorts the wheat from the chaff.

Quite funny really, Garbutt didn't set the world alight at Fulham but we sign their 4th choice keeper.

51 Posted 04/08/2016 at 15:44:04
Derek, so you have accurate inside information on what happens inside the club?
Or is it guesswork again that is sprouted as fact!
Its not Martinez who apparently doesn't want Garbutt, its Koeman.
I happen to think Garbutts a decent player but that's bye the way.

The fact is we havent a clue what goes on behind the scenes 99% of the time, who falls out with who, who's a lazy bastard, who's mouthing it off all the time, who wants away!

Someone within the club must have thought Niasse was worth £13.5m, the question is who was it, he must have shown form to someone to be Russian player of the year, maybe he's an imposter, who knows!
