Silva hails Digne's winning mentality

Marco Silva has been extolling the virtues of his new signing after former Paris St Germain and Roma defender Lucas Digne completed his move to Everton from Barcelona.

The 25-year-old sealed a move worth £18m, with a potential £2m more due in add-ons, by signing a five-year contract with the Blues and Silva says he will add much-needed competition in the left-back spot where the club were left short last season when Leighton Baines suffered a medium-term injury.

“It is important to say that he is a player who, from the first moment he was contacted, showed enormous desire to play at Everton,” Silva said on evertontv of Digne whom Barcelona signed from PSG after he had impressed on loan with Roma.

“He is a high-quality player, aggressive, with good technical ability and in the past five seasons he has played two years at Paris St-Germain, one in Roma and for the past two seasons he has demonstrated his clear quality in Barcelona.

“Lucas is a player who will add competitiveness in a position where we only had Leighton Baines last season and he is accustomed to winning. This is his mentality having captured titles in his career and having these on his résumé.”

Digne, who admits that he was first contacted about move to Goodison two months ago, will wear the No.12 jersey and is in line to make his first appearance in royal blue when Everton take on Valencia in their final pre-season friendly this weekend.

For his part, the Frenchman said he was excited to be coming to the Premier League and that he can't wait to show Evertonians what he can do.

"I want to show my best football here and discover the best league in the world," he said. "Everybody loves the Premier League. I am loving the fact I am coming here.

“I am not afraid, I am excited. For me, it is a new challenge to discover a country, a league, people and a great club such as Everton. It is fabulous. "I had a great feeling with him when we spoke,” Digne said of Silva. “Immediately I said, ‘I want to come to Everton.'

“The Club has brought in a lot of players and we are building to bring some success in the Premier League.

“We will work together as a team to try to make this happen. That is what is important and I could not be more excited about this challenge.”

Top signing; we just need another 4 and we can relax a bit.

Rick, going by your (not very funny) comment, I take it you don't consider Richarlison as a top signing?

Hopefully this works out. Sadly, after all the money spent in the last couple of years, we still need two centre-backs, a central midfielder and a striker. And to find homes for a number of our current squad. A step in the right direction.

Silva now needs to be tough; identify and disregard who he needs to (who we already knew), play the strongest 11 possible on the weekend and find some rhythm. Fingers crossed.

I'd be happy to get in a centre-back and a deep-lying playmaker. They're the essentials. It then gives Brands time to identify the quality needed to mount a real top six challenge and Silva time to really work with what he has with no major flaws.

I was hoping that we would make a real statement when we signed him and as a full-back give him the No 2 shirt.

Last two signings are good ones. A top centre back next please Mr Brands.

Obviously a lot more work still to be done, but for all the pessimism and hand-wringing, Digne and Richarlison are two pretty stellar signings to start. Let's see where we're at come the end of the window.

Rick, going by your post on the Lookman thread, I assume you mean another ten required for the squad, and not the starting eleven. Apologies if thats what you meant, as I got the impression you meant for the starting eleven.

I wouldn't as far as ten, but I agree at least another 4 or 5 top signings are required.

Phil at 7, I think its apt that Schneiderlin is a No 2.

In fact, I would say we should retire the shirt once Schneiderlin leaves the club as he was truly peerless as a No 2!!!

Digne has got the No12 shirt according the Official Site.

Richarlison has the No 30 – and so does Holgate!

I assume official numbers are not out yet. Just wish the No 2, 5, 7 and 11 were still available.

Thats been fully rectified!

Centre-back and centtral midfielder now please.

Not bad signing a replacement left-back about 3 years too late! Hope the kid does well from the off.

Now for 2 centre-backs and a creative midfielder.

Shit, Digne has a tattoo on his chest that reads “I never walk alone”, so all the RS are having a field day.

It's hardly an LFC crest and I'm sure the tattoo has greater meaning to him than just being a RS fan, but we could have done without that. Let's hope he scores in the Kop end and moons the Norwegians.

Phil, Morgan Schneiderlin has been wearing No 18, and Gylfi Sigurdsson No 10. So I assume No 2 is available. I expect Jonjoe to claim it.

Frank, I noticed the same thing. Our younger female fans will go crazy.

Steve, I'm assuming it's religious. It's a line from a Christian song that was a big hit in faith circles a few years ago.

I will never, ever, ever walk alone
You are with us, for us, always holding on

Denis (#22), give it a rest already.

"3 years too late"???

In the summer of 2015 we had Baines at his absolute peak, a recovered Oviedo, and a still-touted Galloway. Last thing in the world we needed then was an left-back.

Steve Ferns
28 Posted 01/08/2018 at 18:49:34
That may be true Mike, but Baines had had a bad injury that year. Martinez obviously had a plan in place though, with Baines, Oviedo and Galloway. Why we didn't have something similar under Koeman is a mystery.

At least we now have Baines, Digne and Robinson. So we're sorted at left-back for the next couple of years, even when Baines leaves / retires.

Yep, I remember, Steve... that was his first time with the ankle. Seems to me he hurt it again in training and was out until that fall. I don't recall anybody pushing for a new left-back then, however.

Anyway, like you I'm delighted with what we have there now. Trust me, you are gonna love Digne.

Mike@30, I bow to your knowledge having seen this guy play, but according to the statistics displayed by SSN (I know) Baines is better in all departments ie, Assists, Tackles, Goals etc.

Now the Goals can be down to Baines being the penalty and Free Kick Merchant, but am hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

What a quality signing. We know that we cant remove all our failings in one transfer window, and we know that we will have to go into the season with many of the players we all want out, but that's football and it takes time.

If we can get 4-5 good players in this window, then maybe 2 in January, that sets us up nicely to remove the rest of the dead wood next summer, whilst showing potential quality targets the style of football on offer at Everton.

Mike Gaynes
42 Posted 01/08/2018 at 20:10:56
Derek (#40), Baines is definitely the superior attacking player - not even close. Digne only had two goals and 4 assists in 46 Barca appearances. But Digne is the better tackler and equally good on interceptions. Keep in mind no Barca defender will have sparkling statistics – most of their opponents don't have the ball very much.

Denis (#35), off target as usual. Digne was the full-time starter at Roma during his loan there three seasons ago, before Barca snapped him up. He was also a full-time starter at Lille three years earlier, at age 18. And of course he was the starting left-back for France in the World Cup at age 20. As for not starting at Barca, well, two words: Jordi Alba.

It's my 6 year old sons first 1st team game, I would like to try get to the ground early with him Saturday to see the players going in, maybe get a photo or 2... could anyone give any advice on how early I should try get there with him?

Mark (43), I think if you get to the Park End around 2-00pm, maybe a little earlier, you will see the players coming in and a lot of them are quite easy going and you and your boy should get a few "selfies" with them.

Best of luck and I hope your little boy enjoys his first game watching the Blues.

Mark #43. Your best bet is to try and get to the car park behind the park stand, around 1pm. The players usually park in the area fenced off and I think start arriving not long after 1pm. Most of them are willing to sign autographs and have photos taken.

Steve and Mike - Regarding the Tattoo - I’m sure Fernando Torres had something similar before he joined Liverpool as he and a few friends got the same Tattoo as an homage to their friendship.

Personally not arsed about the Tattoo, I just want him to put a shift in when he plays.

Two of my favourite Everton players Dave Watson and Peter Reid supported that lot as kids.

Really happy he’s signed and hope we can add a bit more quality to the squad.

Steve #24 - they still have their old numbers on the OS.

I am assuming that the official number allocation has not been done yet but maybe the pre-season numbers (sans name on the shirt) were a clue.

I would be gutted for the 3 supporters who have bought a "Schneiderlin 2" shirt that it would need to be changed. Given our youngest's ability which included shirts Kanchelskis (1996), Rooney (2005), Arteta (2009), perhaps we should make it 4 supporters. If any on here would also like to chip in, we can get him a Mirallas 11 and a Sandro 9 and hopefully it is too late to waste the money on a Williams 5.

"Two months ago they called my agent and when they asked if I was interested or not I said: ‘Yes, I am interested’.

“After I spoke with the coach the feeling was very good and I said I wanted to come to the Premier League and to Everton.”

So, we tapped him up then.

Michael Kenrick
57 Posted 02/08/2018 at 00:35:37
Chris "So we tapped him up then?" Not if we had permission from Barcelona to make contact.

And that's the No 12 shirt Kieran Dowell has been wearing in pre-season. Guess the new kid gets to choose, but it may also mean Kieran has not done enough to impress (have any of them?).

The same must have applied to Richarlison coming in and 'stealing' Mason's No 30 shirt... As if there aren't enough to go round!

There should be more though. After multiple warnings to batten down for The Great Cull, only one player actually left us in the entire month of July.

I think it is telling how Silva has described the joining of Digne to the Everton team. It contrasts sharply with the perception of the Everton team that currently exists.

Silva is setting out the attitude that a player should have when playing for Everton, but which some players don't have – and they are currently affecting the team's attitude.

He is also saying that whatever needs changing will be changed to achieve this. This is the root problem at Everton and Silva has identified it and is trying to do something about it.

Slightly off topic but have been reading that Silva has ordered Williams, Martina, Mirallas and Vlasic to train on their own away from the first team squad.

The source was Prince Rupert's Tower, which I believe is a US fansite. It didn't specify the details of what led to this happening.

As I was reading the article I was hoping Schneiderlin, Bolasie and Pennington may have been there too, but four out of seven is not bad.

It rings true of Silva, Derek. He doesn’t put up with any shit from what I have heard from Hull City supporters. I really do think he’ll root out the shirkers and isolate them. Those who do as he asks will be made to feel a foot taller.

Mark, it's the second time for Mirallas, after the incident with Schneiderlin, whilst Unsworth was in temporary charge.

Like many said at the time, neither should have been allowed back and shown the door there and then.

These contracts that these players have, surely there is some manoeuvre by the Club for disciplinary breaches, to either terminate, or apply strict financial penalties, or do they have it all their own way?

69 Posted 02/08/2018 at 10:07:22
Derek, I was kind of hoping the same but who knows what Silva is seeing behind closed doors. Myabe Morgan has been influenced by Mirallas (its obvious he has an attitude problem...Morgan has improved in preseason, but I'm still not convinced...although I have seen a lot more forward passin from him of late, not that that fct excuses a lot of the shortcomings, but maybe, just maybe we'll get the real Morgan back? As for the others maybe there are potenial outgoin deals in place and thats why they haven't been named in the list? Shame about Vlasic though, I had hoped he'd kick on, but for whatever reason that appears not to be the case.

Either way, I like that Silva has identified problem players and is taking a firm stand with them. Can only be good thing for the team as a whole!

With a bit of patience and support this might all work out beautifully for us!?

Anyone think Silva has lost the squad a bit? We've been shit in the last 2 games since the rumoured 'unpleasant conversations'. Maybe there's just been a decline in effort since people have had it made clear which side of the fence they're on. With the cull survivors relaxing a little and those that are leaving not really giving a shit. Maybe he's told those players mentioned to train alone while he tries to get some kind control over the rest of them?
Brent Stephens
71 Posted 02/08/2018 at 10:52:57
Grant, a bit early to the lose the squad, I guess.

My assumption is that the players who will be on their way out have been told to train separately as you wouldn't them going to other EPL clubs with knowledge of our training regimes (movement, set-pieces etc).

Brent 71.

I don't mean 'lose' in any final, catastrophic sense. Just that there might have been a noticeable downturn in effort and focus since certain players were told that they were surplus.

They've only been isolated recently. Have we really not practised anything related to how we're going to play this season with only just over a week to go until the big kick-off? Seriously?

Wont set-piece routines/training methods and such like be pretty similar to whatever Silva has done at previous clubs anyway? People are pretty routine/habit based and take their ideas and the people they use to implement those ideas with them wherever they go.

Rian Magee
74 Posted 02/08/2018 at 14:51:59
Grant,
I think the more likely scenario is that some of our prima donnas have ha their asses handed back to them and they don't like it, or have been told they have no place in the first team. If thats the case, all well and good...Silva is weeding out the bad apples and shit that have poisoned the squad for too long...

maybe thats just a glass half full view, but I think he's touching some nerves that will work out for the best in getting rid of the attitudes.

In terms of downward turn in for, its impossible to tell in preason games. Who knows what experiments have been tested and trialled, but I think a lot of the bad form comes from a mix of the above, the fact it takes time o get used to a new manager and tactics and simply a lack of adequate competition for places and some squad members just lacking real quality

Brent Stephens

How can Silva lose a squad of players who are already well and truly lost? He seems to me that he can only start winning.

If the cull survivors think it is ok to relax a little then I wouldn't be surprised to see them on the list before long. Either way, Silva gets to see who he can and cannot rely on. Something we fans already know.

Of all the recent players to come in before Silva, it is pretty evident that only Pickford had the required attitude. I thought Klaasen might but he turned out to be a wet blanket, and has been moved on with admirable ruthlessness.

As awful as some of this pre-season fare has been it is hardly surprising. So far Silva has responded very well.
