Double still on as U23s win PLC semi-final at Swansea

Swansea City U23s 0 - 2 Everton U23s

Everton's U23s are into the Premier League Cup final after beating Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.

David Unsworth's Premier League 2 Champions scored a goal in each half through strikers Fraser Hornby and Bassala Sambou to book their place in the final where they will face Newcastle United.

After just 14 mins following a confident start from the visitors, Anthony Gordon whipped in a dangerous free kick and Fraser Hornby found space in the Swansea box to volley home and put the Blues ahead.

After the break, Sambou really should make it 2-0 when one-on-one but hit his shot straight at the keeper.

The second goal came after 74 mins, when a shot by Foulds wasn't dealt with by the goalkeeper, and Sambou reacted first to slot it home and consolidate Everton's advantage.

Everton U23s: Virginia, Astley, Feeney, Gibson, Galloway, Bowler (87' John), Markelo, Adeniran, Gordon (67' Foulds), Hornby (85' Denny), Sambou.
Subs not Used: Hilton, Mampala.

They are winning 1-0 at half time, just finished the half. Fraser Hornby scored after fourteen minutes, missed another good chance just before the interval. Swansea have used their three subs, through injury, forty five minutes to get to a final!!!

Michael, Dave or Hugh:

Thoughts on Sambou? I have never seen him play so, at 22, with no first team games, I was assuming he would be out the door in the summer. The Echo claim, however, that Everton want to keep him and he has trained with the first team.

I also saw Unsy say it was "up to Sambou" if he would be staying at the club. Initially, I thought that was a passive aggressive comment insinuating he has to do more to get a new deal. Now (if the Echo can be believed) it seems as if Sambou is weighing his options as he wants first team football.

Just wondering if he is likely to make the grade or if the seemingly teenage fan-boy writers they employ at The Echo these days are getting carried away with their own imagined fantasy football team?

A great positive for this team to finish this season off in style. Also for the club and it will hopefully galvanise the growing spirit and belief in the club the last couple of months. Long may it last.

Does any know where, when, the final will be played, I'm assuming a neutral ground? Thank you.

I will try and get to this game, work commitments permitting.

Kieran (#7), I think Sambou or his agent is weighing his future up. He is ambitious, Coventry City didn't want him to leave. One of his coaches there said he had good potential but was very raw and had a lot to learn.

His contract is up now at Everton; if they want him to stay, they must have made him an offer. It looks like he is seeing if there are better offers elsewhere.

As for his future in football, I would doubt very much if it is in the Premier League. He has a decent scoring record, is fast, and puts himself about... but is limited in his overall play. Good luck to the lad in his future career but I would be surprised if it is at Everton. That's just my opinion.

Dave @9

Thanks for the info. That makes sense to me. Makes me wonder if we are giving him a new deal so we can flog him for £500k or something versus letting him go for zero.

No indication when or where the final is to be played.

Michael 12, two football mad cities, maybe they should toss for where the game is played. If it's at Goodison, I'd even go on a Monday night.

David Unsworth is quoted as saying. “We should get plenty of supporters in at Goodison” talking about the final, so Bill Griffiths could be right.

Just want to know where and when this fixture is and we need to turn up in our droves . we can make a difference in these fixtures.

I went last year to the away Chelsea when we won our first U23's title.

We are based near Windsor and in my sons school they are all Chelsea

He kept saying why do they all support the horrible Chelsea.

Well we went to the fixture down at Aldershot's Ground. I was so so effing proud of our lot and the fans turned up and 75% were Evertonian's from all parts of the country - not just local that was what was so impressive.

The most amazing couple came from Norwich just to be there they were in their 70's but they were there and oh so nice.

They came to the burger van and my son was there choosing his food and they asked him who he supported and he was nervous and said EFC. they said we guessed because you are so nice He smiled and then went into the stand, still really nervous about the Chelsea hords. every time a group came in he asked me "Who are They dad". meaning are they Everton. I was so proud to tell him each time they were blues. It was so brilliant to see our U23's and Unsy supported so much.

To see his confidence build and to know we have more fans that Chelsea was wonderful for both me and him.

So lets get to the final guys I am definitely going. and I might be able to bring Deny if his SATs are over

Kieran - Sorry - I don't know enough about the skill sets of the U17/18/19/21/22/23 to make a meaningful contribution.

I wish I did - but I am only following the fortunes of these guys on the internet - as are most people.

The Final's at Goodison. Date and K.O, times TBA.

From the Everton FC web page; "The Premier League 2 champions maintained their bid for a double this season thanks to goals from forwards Fraser Hornby and Bassala Sambou in south Wales to book a final against Newcastle United at Goodison Park".

All that's needed now is for Everton to do their bit for a gold coin donation entry and free for U-16s and OAPs. "Bless 'em all, bless 'em all..."

Fantastic news that the final to be held at Goodison, sounds a bit unfair on Newcastle but I'm not sure if it was pre-determined before they knew who the finalists would be.

I hope we get notice from the OS as to when exactly, because as has been suggested, a lot will turn up for that one, me included, provided I know when.

I think the Media side of our Club needs revamping, I have mentioned this before on various issues, if it wasn't for TW, I wouldn't know about these events etc.

Pre-season match viewing is a prime example, how many times do they have technical difficulties and the match we have all paid to watch is just a message saying they are trying to resolve the issue?

Good on the lads, winning attitude and I'd assume all of them have a career in professional football, which is a huge well done to our academy.

The likes of Hornby and Sambou, I guess, are just not quite at the level required to make our first-team squad, but maybe a move to Scotland (especially for Hornby) would do them good.

Feeney, Gibson, Bowler, Adeniran, and Gordon for first-team training in the summer.

Dave, just been on the OS about ticket arrangements for Wednesday, and it says ticket arrangements will be announced shortly.

FFS, it's Monday today, it doesn't give people much notice as to obtaining a Ticket does it? As many have shown interest, and some even want to travel a fair distance, I often think and have mentioned our Media side of things at Everton FC, leaves a lot to be desired, let's hope it's happening later today!

Oh and by the way the U12’s beat Genova 2-1 in Italy yesterday, coming from 1-0 down to win the competition.
What a club, two cup final trophies in four days?

Derek (25), I’ll be going to the game, don’t know what sort of state I’ll be in tomorrow, going out soon, watching the City game in Ned Kelly’s with three of my Red mates, hope I’m the one smiling at the end of the game!!!

Derek, I don't think we can blame Everton for such short notice on this one. I assume it's the decision of the Premier league to have the game this Wednesday. Though why such short notice I've no idea? Surely a week on Wednesday would have been better.
Derek Knox
29 Posted 06/05/2019 at 16:19:31
True Rob, a bit unfair to be honest, Steven Jones @16, based near Windsor expressed a desire to go, it doesn't give him either time or notice, if he intends to travel.

Are you going anywhere before Rob for a liquid refreshment? I am coming over from Chester so will have to have a pre-match pint, as I will have to get the train back after the match.

Kieran (7).

Sorry for the delay.

I don't know enough about Sambou nor his performances etc. to pass a sensible comment on what you ask - sorry.

Like many on here, I follow the progress of all the teams - primarily from second hand observation, and delight in any success that any team from Everton achieves - but regrettably, I am not really competent to pass comment on individuals nor individual performances.

I just revel in the glory of any Everton success and thank God (or the Devil) that I wasn't touched with the RS stick.

From reading the comments, it would give the impression that we are living in a ' gated community'. :-)

As important as this match is, please do not let 'issues' resort to physical violence, and spill onto the pitch! :-)

Come on you young blues, leave an impression, indicating that you are here to stay, and save us a load of cash on unknown footballers! :-)

Totally off subject but Sky have just confirmed that some Derby forward will escape punishment for a blatant dive which resulted in a penalty. The clip was shown and the five couldn't have been more obvious. This then raised the Niasse question. I then realized Lampard is the manager.More bias eh ?
