Delph to miss winnowed Florida Cup due to self-isolation

Inter and Arsenal withdraw

Fabian Delph was not on the plane when Everton's squad flew out to Orlando today because he has had to self-isolate and will miss the Florida Cup which is now down to just two teams.

The midfielder was pinged by the Government's COVID-19 track-and-trace system and was advised to quarantine after coming into contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.

“Everton can confirm that Fabian Delph will not travel with the squad to the Florida Cup in Orlando as a precautionary measure after coming into contact with someone who has since tested positive for Covid-19,” read a club statement.

“Delph, who began his preparations for the coming season on 5 July and has played in both of the Club's practice matches — including a 1-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday — will resume his pre-season training as soon as his period of self-isolation is over.”

What was originally a four-team tournament is now down to just two after Arsenal announced that they were pulling out following a number of positive Covid-19 tests among their squad players and backroom staff.

That was followed, after the Everton party had departed the UK, by news from Inter Milan that they, too, were withdrawing from the Florida Cup leaving just Everton and Millonarios who will now meet at 6:00 EDT (11:00 BST) on Sunday evening at Camping World Stadium in Orlando with further updates to come from the tournament organisers.

Speculation on whether Everton also intended to pull out of the tournament following Arsenal's own withdrawal can be put to bed, judged by this story on the club site. The team flew out this morning and are probably mid-Atlantic as I write:

Everton Depart For Florida

Just the one game then, unless we fly straight back from the US.
Inter Milan have pulled out of the Florida Cup in order to 'protect their squad'.

According to Angelo Mangiante, the Italian ginats were due to travel to America tomorrow but will now NOT travel and consequently won't be taking part in the Florida Cup.

Much like with the situation around Arsenal stepping away from the competition, with a small number of their travelling party testing positive for coronavirus, Mangiante suggests that it is because of the Covid situation in travel that requires 'caution'

Now travelling to the state with the most current positive cases of covid under the Delta variant for one game. Anybody know how many of our squad have been fully vaccinated? I can only hope we do not come back with a whole team with covid and, at best, have to self-isolate.

We should have pulled out also.

I don't believe you are alone in your apprehension. If the figures that some SAGE scientists are predicting for cases and hospitalisations in the coming weeks are proved correct, it might result in a limited capacity or even behind closed doors again. I note that Man City has decided to call off their friendly with Troyes in France, due to the quarantine rules and their match with Preston will be played behind closed doors.

I wonder (after Gilmore) if the Colombians are vaccinated? Their country as a whole has vaccinated just 20 percent, and among other vaccines they use the Chinese vaccine which is 51 percent effective. Just imagine James greeting all his countrymen then being ruled out with assymptomatic Covid and fatigue.

As far as I can see we are the only team with a friendly outside Europe, with Leeds and Liverpool the only teams with a friendly outside the UK. A pretty big gamble just to sell a few James shirts.

Seemingly it’s run by a business called Florida Cup LLC, CEO named Ricardo Villar, which is said to have got a 30,000 bailout loan from the feds last year to cover wages of the firms “one employee.” Maybe Ricardo himself? It looks as if it’s basically thrown together by this bloke and funded by sponsors like Universal of Orlando. As for Inter, Lukaku was shown today already doing individual training in Florida before linking up with his team mates. Hopefully they’ll let him know not to wait up.

I wouldn’t worry about going to the game. It’s now four months since there was more than a handful of daily deaths, and they probably the vaccine refusers, and people who died with rather than of COVID.

The increased numbers are of positive tests, not necessarily cases, a case being an ill patient needing treatment. They keep frightening us with tales of new variants, but now we nearly all have antibodies, any infection will probably result in mild or even no symptoms. That has been the experience of people I know who tested positive.

Perhaps you would like to speak to the family members and friends of the loved ones who have died through Covid that it's a pity, but they were only one of a "handful"? How many have to die before you consider it's nothing to worry about? One death is one too many.

One thing you are correct to say which is that the majority of the current cases are those who have not been vaccinated. But since approximately 50% of Florida residents have not been vaccinated that does leave a lot of Floridians who are in a position to catch and spread the virus, primarily now the Delta variant.

Also, I have a close friend who is currently undergoing chemo and whose immune system might be compromised, even though he's double-jabbed. You may be lucky enough to not suffer much personally but you can still pass it on. Terry and Ray, a dozen or so daily deaths in a country of 60 million is a handful, when you consider how many thousands die of other causes.

One death is too many? The logic of that leads to a complete shutdown like spring last year. And if the economy collapses, which it would, what would that do the physical and mental health of the nation? I am old enough to remember the mass unemployment of the seventies, perhaps you are not. And have you considered the excess deaths that are going to happen due to last year’s missed cancer and heart disease diagnoses?

Of course vulnerable people need to be protected, but the way do do that is by self-isolation and the use of FFP3 masks and eye protection and frequent hand washing, not by relying on other people to wear masks which have minimal effect.

Speaking of excess deaths, the number for this COVID period is TEN TIMES the normal expectations from actuarial projections which are very stable if you're thinking about challenging that. So let's factor everything up by ten when we're talking about handfuls.

And well, some of us believe that with our health care system capacity and availability of treatment at this point one more death is too many.

Roger Helm
42 Posted 21/07/2021 at 21:18:45
Dale, if you want not one single person to die of COVID, it means the whole population, and I mean everyone, confined to home for two weeks and thereafter no one entering or leaving the country, indefinitely.

Australia tried that and you can see the result.

Roger (#39), a "dozen or so daily deaths in a country of 60 million". Clearly you are not speaking about the US. The game is being played in Florida and any comparison against the UK, for example, is meaningless. It is what is happening in Florida and the US that is critical in this situation. Yes, I do live in the US.

If you are not concerned about the rising rates of the coronavirus in the US, then you should be because that is where the Blue squad has landed to play a "friendly" game in a state that is seeing rising cases of the virus. You should be concerned about the fans who are travelling to that state to watch the game and will be close to a lot of other people without knowing whether these have been vaccinated or not. And with the number of summer visitors to the nearby theme parks you can be assured the number of positive cases will rise. Sure, not everybody will die and people might just feel ill. Do you want to feel the symptoms of the virus which may or may not be serious in your case? This does not help local hospitals who are seeing a big rise again in people seeking hospital assistance, primarily from the unvaccinated. Many of whom are now saying thy wish that they had been vaccinated.

The only preferential way to avoid the virus in the US is to be vaccinated. There is a reason why travel between the UK and the US is restricted right now.

53 Posted 21/07/2021 at 21:45:12
Terry,

Just so you know, the majority of those being infected are now those who have been vaccinated, at least once. Predominantly, aged between late teens or so and 30. So their vaccination, if they’ve had it, Is recent, and so, susceptible to infections.

Vaccination uptake seems to be slowing down. Possibly because younger people don’t feel so vulnerable.

The usual covidiot denial continues unabated I see. No mention of the rate of deaths increasing at about 50 plus % every day. It’s not about the absolute deaths daily but the rate of increase on a daily basis. As infections increase massively, so must deaths, sooner or later. It’s inevitable and simple maths. One follows the other. The link between infections and deaths has been weakened, not broken.

It’s there to see for those who want to see, and this is under social distancing measures, just finished.

Bobby Mallon

"The only preferential way to avoid the virus in the US is to be vaccinated."

Depends what you mean by "Avoid". If you mean avoid full symptoms, then the vaccine claims to lessen them.

There is no way to avoid inhaling airborne particles/pathogens into the body, short of permanent isolation forever in a controlled environment.

The vaccines(s) are not claimed to prevent infection.

Bobby Mallon
56 Posted 21/07/2021 at 21:53:28

Chris (#53), I take all you say.

Here is another current news article which takes an opposite view, saying the majority of cases are the young and the unvaccinated.

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article252874313.html

Once again I emphasise, what is happening in the UK cannot be compared to what is happening in the US where there is a big rise in new cases largely driven by the Delta variant. And, sadly, unvaccinated people not wearing masks.

I agree that the vaccination does not cure all evils or protect against all symptoms of the virus. But it is certainly the best you can do to protect yourself and, lest we forget, others.

I guess our game now is at 6pm local time against Millionarios, but no one knows if we have to repurchase tickets just for the Sunday game and no one has a clue if we are going to play again on Wednesday. Mike Gaynes
67 Posted 21/07/2021 at 23:08:10
Will, you have said this twice I believe: "The vaccine is not claimed to stop infection by or transmission of the "Virus"."

Yes. It is.

The vaccine has been showed to be 95% effective in preventing infection and transmission by the original virus, and appears to be slightly less so against the Delta variant. No vaccine is 100% effective (except polio), so some people who have had the double jabs do get infected anyway.

What's most important, however, is that the shots are virtually 100% effective in preventing death and serious illness from COVID. The US CDC as well as state agencies and treatment centers say that all current COVID deaths and critical care patients here are unvaccinated. All of them.

Dale Self
68 Posted 21/07/2021 at 23:22:09
There was talk early on that the vaccine was really only blocking the severe symptoms. I'm not sure they went back to clear that up when the data started coming in and there are some questions about the breakthrough infections.

Oh and by the way, don't get exhausted now here comes the lambda variant. It's about time to reword some old standards by Tom Lehrer and start singing.

They are doing general admission at the gate now, so we can basically we can sit anywhere. What I've heard is that Arsenal & Inter are stumping up the refunds due to their non-appearances. No word on Wednesday's game yet though.

If the game's do get cancelled, I'll take full responsibility for it. My last trip back home coincided with me having tickets for the derby, the one cancelled due to Covid. This is the nap, from the fraud of a journeyman player, who’s not played well, since he left Villa.

His last decent game was when he helped Villa beat the RS, in a former Milk Cup, knock on equivalent, final, at Wembley.

At, City in my view he lost the desire, and Silva bought a duff who is a fraud of an Everton player.

Made up in some ways that some of the better up and coming youth players, area in the squad and played last season, will have an improved chance of progressing, after the Italian job, this season.

Seen some positives knowing some youngsters are now part of the first team development plan.

Each to their own, and reality over history, and proper economical growth development of the North Docks.

What’s the issue, beyond bullshit bingo ergonomics, and the reality of making a renaissance of real estate rotting in past history, and not helping the regional economy?

Fekkn, those do Good, hyprocrites., from UNESCO, whom have never been to the North Docks, and north end of Liverpool, and have never smelt the air and felt the nostalgia of the North Liverpool Docks.

Onwards and upwards in spirit for Everton, the City and the North Docks regeneration project.

Ironic, the publicised descision announced fromUNESCO,, that is Liverpools cultural loss in terms of sea trade and communities.

Another Heist, but this is a heist that will grow positive, and the City of Liverpool, and all in the City region will prosper.

Nark, over..
Weekend is near and does any one have any clues to seeing the game, this weekend ?

That’s another story, a two team tournament..

Hopefully Everton can win, and the latter day Spanish Cat, may yet win more Evertonians over.

Hope eternal.

As if us Evertonians have not had enough crap served up to us over the past 20-odd years and our pride severely hit. We now have a run-of-the-mill manager who has more to prove to us early on than any other manager ever.

We have headlines about Delph not being able to make it to a meaningless game overseas when he is one of our worst signings ever and has a horrible attitude.

We then have Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies dressed up like some clowns at a fashion show for the Village People. These are two players that clearly think they are at the top of their trade and can do what they like. The opposite is true for me as they both still have everything to prove.

There will be a lot of long-lost Evertonians turning in their graves at the way this club has gone.

I meant to add too, that there was a similar photo some time ago when DCL and Skater Boy Tom Davies both went to New York, and posed for a photo in similarly garish garb. They looked more like Quentin Crisp and Beau Brummell than Professional Footballers !

With the virus we have to accept the situation we are in. Boris Johnson and his ilk completely fuckkd up, hundreds of thousands/millions of people died as a result. The virus could have been contained with public health measures but it wasn't and, as a result, it is now endemic. Due to the vaccines, we are in a different position to last May or January this year, far less people are dying. If you are eligible, get vaccinated and start living.

Tom Harvey @ 43,

I didn't know this guy was credited in bringing Godfrey in but you must agree our scouting system is abysmal compared to the likes of Leicester, Southampton, Leipzig etc, the discussion goes deeper as we need to look at the scouting system, recruitment, and the academy that are all linked and need a complete overhaul.

Robert Tressell
78 Posted 22/07/2021 at 08:41:37
John #77,

I expect our scouting system is okay – especially after a recent upgrade from Brands. Leipzig will be far ahead because, through Red Bull, they seem to scour Africa for teenagers from places like Zimbabwe. But, aside from that, there aren't really any hidden gems in the age 18 to 23 category. They're all known to the clubs.

I think the problem is more our recruitment strategy which overlooks the profile of player Leicester, Leipzig and others buy – because we lurch from one flawed short-term strategy to another.

It's why we've deteriorated through spending more than the RS over the last 5 years, while making it easy for the likes of Villa to build a squad of about the same quality in no time at all.

The organisers of this Florida cup confirm the Everton game to go ahead as planned. No news, as yet, if any replacement teams will be brought in. Would it not be possible for two MLS teams to participate? I know they are in the middle of their season, but surely two teams could miss a couple of MLS games to participate in this meaningless tournament. All refunds to be processed automatically, with pay on the gate for any fans still wishing to go.

Pete- DCL dressing in an outlandish fashion doesn’t mean he thinks he knows it all. He’s having a bit of harmless fun after a very long season in which he proved a lot of people wrong. If he scores twenty goals or more again let him dress how he likes.

Delph is apparently very unhappy with the club due to his wrongly being linked to the unsavoury events of last weekend. It's also being reported that he along with James and others will be allowed to leave should another club come in for them.

For UK residents the BBC red button is showing live Olympic Football, with the coverage of Brazil's game with Germany beginning at 12:15 pm today.

Delph? Pfffft.

What the fuck is a Delph anyway? He’s like a unicorn or the tooth fairy. I detest the lad and his attitude. How the fuck can you get paid £80k a week and not work weekends ???? He’s a troll. Possibly the worst signing this club has ever made and that’s saying something. He has no desire to play footy at all and he has 4 periods a month. He’s a shambles of a player, and I use the term “Player” lightly. I’ll rejoice when he contract comes to an end. I’ve never wanted to see the back of someone so much. If he’s honest and has any integrity at all, he’ll retire ……. Not that anyone would touch him like, but he needs to stop taking wages from teams he offers zero too. Finances are tight now and he offers fuck all to any employer to receive a wage. He’s a disgrace. He’s finished and has been for about 8 years. Look at his wiki page. The year he made his professional debut and the amount of games he’s played….. it’s embarrassing. Truly truly embarrassing. 15 years as a professional and his stats are pathetic. He’s a joke.

The little rat bastard.

Benn - 92 - I presume you don’t like Delph?

I am on the same page as are most blues fans but expecting him to walk away from 80k without working weekends is a bit much to ask. Would you? If he did, he could take Iwobi with him - now there’s a happy thought!

Tom Bowers
94 Posted 22/07/2021 at 12:14:42
Looks like this tournament is a bust. Maybe they will play the remaining side 3 times instead with the best of three taking the trophy.

On the Delph saga I have to ask, how many players have we signed in recent seasons who we thought would be useful but have turned out to be just ''sick note'' carriers getting well paid for nothing. Hopefully Gbamin gets to put in a shift this season.

Benn Chambers

I don’t expect him to walk from £80k a week like, I don’t expect him to walk at all. That’s his main issue. I’d be delighted if he hobbled away with Iwobi and Tosun and Bernard and Holgate and Gomes and Sigurdsson. That would allow us a proper rebuild. I’m just glad the gravy train appears to be over now. We should only be lying top dollar wages now to players who earn it and are worth of it.

Brazil quick out of the traps and dominating.

Richy, playing in the iconical #10 shirt for Brazil for the first time, put clean through in a similar position to his goal at Anfield, first shoots against the keeper, but puts the rebound in from a sharp angle just 9 minutes into the game.

Should be 2-0. Long punt out of defence. Last German defender attempts a weak back header to the keeper. Richy picks up the ball in acres of space, dithers, keeper smothers, chance gone.

Richy again with a thumping header. Held his position at the edge of the area well before attacking the 6 yard box as the cross came in from the touchline.

Rob, Dani boy returned to Brazil a couple of seasons ago with Sao Paulo, mostly as a holding midfielder.

Even at 38 he still oozes class and SP were running away with the Brazilian league driven by him until bizarrely they totally collapsed and threw it all away. Now in the relegation zone after 12 games this season. This is his 1st Olympics ever as a 'thank you' by Brazilian FA. And as you can see, he's still got it.

I can only assume that DCL is getting paid for that. Heaven knows he needs a few extra bob doesn’t he ??

Well stated Roger (42). Not unexpectedly most of the responses cling to the 'one life lost is one life too many' mantra, despite all the non-covid health impacts now being acknowledged as a consequence of the focus on covid treatment resourcing.
Even Whitty agrees that we must learn to live with the virus - unfortunately his interpretation of the meaning of this is that we do less and less with our lives. To enforce this stance the government is maintaining its fear-creating approach. It clearly doesn't care much for the old Spanish proverb: "Vivir con miedo es vivir a media" -- A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

Richy has looked goosed since before half time so being subbed out on 73 minutes was 30 minutes too late IMO.

One of the subs to come on is Renier, the teenager wunderkind we were linked with while he was still at Flamengo.

Real Madrid paid a lot of money for him (when they still had money), since when he has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Are we the only club to have these lazy, non interested, shuffling types who just cruise around doing nowt all day. I hope he leaves. The sooner the better. Appalling attitude

Off-topic completely, but Everton is going to have an in-house platform for season ticket holders who can't attend a given game. It looks as if all tickets will be sold at face value and is a damn sight better than the profiteering that used to happen with stub-hub.

Just interviewed Richy at the end of the game.

For those of you who resent his scowling game face, he was beaming with joy, very playful.

Among his very first words was to mention Everton and how they granted his wish to play at the Olympics.

Very humble but evidently overjoyed to score a hatrick wearing the famed #10 shirt for an 'unforgettable experience.'

I don't think many are fully aware of just how big and well liked Richy is in Brazil by the 'povo' not just for his football, but for his personality and what he does to help the less fortunate.

Jay.
The times they are a changing. Haven’t been back for a good few years now so obviously the COVID crisis has put a different mindset into the Brazilians.
It was always thought by many that ‘Paulistas’ were the serious people who kept the country going with hard work whilst alot of others like the ‘Cariocas’ just went to the beach and partied away.
I know Brazil is one of the worst affected by COVID but the thought of them all giving up on their greatest love of all is a sure sign that things are bad.
God bless you all and stay safe.

I watched the earlier game between Australia and Argentina. Even though The Argies went down to 10 men I thought the Aussie were excellent all over the pitch and should have had even more goals. Aussies being captained by a kid who arrived as a refugee. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Barry@125, that is great news in regards to ticket resales being done by Everton.

I hope they have a data base can can keep check on how many times, a ticket has been sold on and any repeated resales of over half of the season gets flagged up.

Over the last few years on stubhub, apart from the Derby game, you could always guarentee at least 10 that were for sale, every home game, normally kids tickets, same seat.

In hindsight of how cheap the child season ticket is, it is a great incentive for families, however there are always some that will spoil it for the rest, by simply having a child season ticket, that will guarentee them a Derby ticket, and a far better chance of a cup final ticket.

A shame really, because it is stopping other Evertonians, to be able to purchase a season ticket.

As long as Delph is an Everton player l will support him. Shame we cant pick at the covid rules instead. They can't trust a pcr test?

Question marks over all 6 of our centre mids. If Delph, Gbamin and Gomes stay fit are they better or worse than Allan, Doucoure and Davies?

You surprise me because I sold my seat a few times on stub-hub and although the club did provide the actual ticket, the seat was mine and it was me who instigated the sale and it was me who set the price.

This new service will be nothing like stub-hub, If I can't make a game, I'll get back the value pro-rata from the club and the club will then sell it on to another party for the price set depending on the price category the match falls into.

I like the sound of the new StubHub replacement. I used the old system a handful of times, both to buy and then to sell when I got a season ticket, and I always listed at face value or below. But some people, as has been mentioned, were clearly selling on their ticket for every game, and charging a huge mark-up for the big games.

Great that the club will donate to charity the difference between the pro-rata price they'll give the ticket-seller, and the face value price they'll charge the ticket-buyer.

Eric@133, and there is the problem, wait for it, you can sell a child ticket, quite correct, you could not as an adult, gain admission, but you could upgrade the child ticket, for an adult ticket, where when presented at the ticket office, Everton would charge the difference, from a child ticket, to an adult ticket.

I am assuming now Everton take charge of the resale ticket, they can refund the child ticket credit, to the season ticket holder, then will resell the ticket, as an adult ticket, which will help the charity no end, instead of greed.

I bought a few times on StubHub, with genuine fans either asking for the ticket price, or below, absolutely disgusting that some could try to ask for over double the ticket price, for the big games, sometimes four times as much, to their own supporters.

Thankfully now, this will stop those overpriced tickets appearing on StubHub.
