Everton have won just two games in eight in the Premier League.

They have taken just 2 points from home matches against Brentford, Wolves and Leeds United.

They have been without some key players for well over a month, and face the very real prospect of going the rest of the season without Jack Grealish.

And yet somehow, despite all the frustration and disappointment, they have picked up enough points to still be in the top half, just 3 points off the Top 6, and only 5 points behind 4th-place Manchester United.

Had Everton won on Monday, they would have moved into 7th place. As it is, they are 10th, but as the end of January approaches, they are right in the mix in one of the most congested races for European qualification in recent memory.

Just 10 points separate 4th place from 13th. Bournemouth are within two wins of 6th-place Liverpool.

There is a real opportunity here, because none of these teams really look capable of stringing together any kind of consistency.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have the strongest squads of the bunch, and you would expect, when all things iron themselves out, that those three teams make up between 4th and 6th. But it is very likely European qualification will drop down to 7th, and there is a healthy chance that the 8th spot will be worth a place in next season’s Uefa Conference League.

So Everton are right in the mix. Whether you feel they are “ready” for Europe or not, or whether or not they are really good enough, is not the argument. They might not, on paper, be strong enough — but neither are Sunderland, or Brighton, or Bournemouth, or Fulham. And all of those teams are probably in the picture at the moment, too.

Opta’s supercomputer, which runs 10,000 predictions ahead of every matchday, ranks Everton’s Top 6 chances at 7.86%; their probability of a Top 7 finish stands at 14.83%, and the likelihood they are in the Top 8 come the end of May is 17.15%.

But this is with Everton’s current squad, and as mentioned, this is an Everton team that is only just getting some of its best players back, even if Grealish is going to be a big miss.

And this is an Everton team that has not been given any help, so far, in the January transfer window.

David Moyes continues to say that Everton are looking for opportunities in the market. They are drastically short at full-back, and now on the wings, and they are shorn of a back-up centre-forward that is capable of offering reliable support to Thierno Barry.

Could they get all of those positions of need filled in one winter window? Of course not, and that shouldn’t be expected.

But the seeming lack of urgency — or perhaps, even, just a tad too much caution — is frustrating, because there is a real opportunity here for Everton to get back where Moyes, and their fans, feel they belong.

Europe does not have to be the primary objective. But Everton are well clear of danger, and seasons like this do not come around every year. There is nothing wrong with having a rough aim, and a stretch target, and seeing where it ends up.

However, to achieve that stretch target, Everton’s squad needs a boost. It needs those one or two fresh faces, either on loan or cheaper deals, who are ready to come in and make an impact. Carlos Alcaraz is the perfect example — even if he had to work harder than perhaps he really should have had to, to earn Moyes’s trust, the Argentine came in last January and made his impact felt straight away, providing a versatile squad option and bringing energy and drive in midfield.

I wrote earlier this month that Everton could not allow their season to drift; even after the ups and downs of this dreary January, the campaign is still alive, just waiting for a spark.

Please, Everton, act. Do not be reckless; do not spend big money on a player now if you wouldn’t in the summer... but still, act. There are deals there to be done; players who would improve certain areas of this team (or squad), because the bar in those positions is so low.

Moyes has his critics, and some of that criticism is fair, but we should not lose perspective of how far Everton have come in a year. And the club should not let a fantastic opportunity pass them by, just because they were too caught up in ensuring the mistakes of yesteryear aren’t repeated.

We ARE letting the season drift, and it comes down to a complete lack of ambition. The increased money from higher league placing would pay for incomings, and instead, TFG and the "transfer committee" are treading on their own dicks rather than helping the manager and the team.

This season is a real opportunity, and we are fucking crying out for full-backs and some pace on the wings. It's been a weakness for years, and we've done nothing whatsoever to address it.

Having started the season with many of us content to see a season of mid-table mediocrity after years of squalor, there's instead a real opportunity to take advantage of the league's mediocrity this season, and we're throwing it away.

Or, how about we wait until Monday evening before we rush to judgement?

Phil, we've played half a dozen games without recruitment, with the window open. Games when we could have used those imaginary new players might turn up on Monday. Had we any ambition or nous, we'd have brought them in, rather than shitting the bed repeatedly at home, and missing points that could have us firmly in the mix for European football.

Wait and see is a losing strategy, as we're seeing.

Spot on Philip. For the last few years we’ve entered January desperate for signings as there was a real fear of relegation. Let’s just relax shall we for once. We are building a team and squad here and if the right opportunities aren’t available then I’m ok for us to wait until the summer rather than buying someone for the sake of it.

Yes I’d love us to get into Europe and finish as high as possible, but without the squad to do this next season it could be a poisoned chalice as it could impact us in the league next year. Slow and steady is fine for the next season and a half and then after we’ve been through 3 more transfer windows I’d expect us to be in a much stronger squad position to really cope with Europe and the demands of the league.

I’ll still be checking Sky Sports regularly on Monday though 😂

You keep waiting Phillip, but I think a lot of sensible people will agree with the title of this thread.

I’m not sure we can have it all, but I think it’s a very fair question to ask our owners TSF, how much do you want success for Everton?

Wait till Monday?. The transfer window opened 30 days ago. But it's Everton let's wait till the last minute. And the way Moyes was talking in his presser. No one's coming in.

Rob, I’d love it if we’d signed two quality fullbacks and a worldie striker on Jan 1st, but there’s been very little movement in this transfer window, the opportunities aren’t popping up until maybe last minute. We don’t have the clout, yet, to steam in and snap up whoever we want on day one of the transfer window. Who knows what’ll happen on Monday? Could be zilch, or Jhon Duran walks through the doors. But zilch is better than Cenk Tosun 2.0

I know I’m a broken record but this whole focus on Europe thing irritates me after Moyesy threw the league cup which was 6 games with a chance for Europe and a trophy, most of the games being before the AFCON. Versus 38 games with AFCON disruption. If you’re going to get into Europe via the league you need to beat some good teams along the way. Ditto the league cup but the latter also throws up a few lesser opponents. So what’s the path of least resistance? Lightning looks for the highest point to strike. If Moyes were a lightning bolt he’d be aiming for the Mariana Trench.

Kieran,

After taking over a team in the relegation zone, why would you expect Moyes would be targeting winning the League Cup a few months later? Why would anyone think we stood a cat in hell's chance of winning that?

Okay, it's not impossible... but hardly within the reasonable expectations of a season. And he didn't throw the game at Wolves; if I remember, we had Grealish playing in that game and a host of first-teamers. He wanted to win it.

But hey, we went out to another Premier League team in an away game. Shit happens.

There are 20 clubs in the Premier League. Only a handful have done no January business whatsoever. The majority have made incremental additions in an attempt to win the league, or gain a European place, or avoid relegation.

There is a modest opportunity this window to provide a little fresh impetus to your squad, even if only through loans. If you have the desire and the capability. There's still a little time left…

The best post is the first post. It says it all.

Paul, Tony, and Ian quash the in Kinnear we mistrust wait till Monday pleading.

We've had thirty days and in that time we lost matches that we could/should have won that we might have one with a couple of new faces.

I can only quote Rob:

'We ARE letting the season drift, and it comes down to a complete lack of ambition. The increased money from higher league placing would pay for incomings, and instead, TFG and the "transfer committee" are treading on their own dicks rather than helping the manager and the team'.

Cue the lecture from our resident TFG super fan

You lie Dale - 8 - surely, Devlin did not post something with a fleeting resemblance to football?

Rumour that Notts Forest are interested in signing Dwight McNeil in late transfer????

We almost certainly won't finish 7th or 8th. The odds tell you that, I think we need to accept TFG are not going to bankroll us. By their measure, they spent a lot in the summer. They are not going to buy what might be overpriced players in January. A top class recruitment team might be buying gems we don't know but are potentially brilliant, but I don't think we have such a team.

We'll sell in summer and added to a modest bit on investment funding, will likely buy a couple of players. Exciting it isn't but it was never going to be.

Keane Lewis-Potter, Raheem Sterling, Lukaku and for good sake any right back. Literally anyone.

Those breathing exercises don’t seem to be working.

Regarding right back, if Patterson (Patti/Patto/Patts) stays fit, will Moyes trust him with a run that position next season? That said, surely Coleman does not get another contract. Surely? (Don’t call me surely.)

So we’ll still need a right back next season. At least one.

Yep, Jimmy. It makes more sense if you read his posts like Trumps’ angry, rambling angry Truth Social posts. He’ll be suing us for $15 billion next. I might have to start thinking about a restraining order.

It’ll be interesting to see how Patterson develops. I’m worried about him up against Mitoma today, especially if Dibling or McNeil are playing- it could be carnage down our right.

It’ll be interesting to see if Patterson actually plays Phillip.

He played against Mitoma, in the famous five - one victory at Brighton a few seasons ago, but I’m not sure he will play today

Philip Devlin

Didn’t McNeil get a worldie in that? But playing down the left. It might’ve been Iwobi in front of Patterson. Certainly not Dibling or NcNeil leaving the barn door flapping open.

Wouldn’t mind seeing a back three to counter Mitoma and Minteh but it’s not going to happen.
