Everton 2 - 0 Burnley
David Moyes kept faith with the same Everton XI that won at Newcastle United on Saturday for tonight's clash against Burnley at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and it paid dividends in terms of a solid performance with two nicely constructed goals.
After scoring the second goal in that 3-2 success at St James' Park, Beto once again led the Blues' attack, flanked by wingers Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the No 10 role.
James Garner – making his 100th start in all competitions for Everton – partnered Idrissa Gana Gueye in defensive midfield, while the Toffees' backline remains Jake O'Brien, captain James Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite, Vitalii Mykolenko and keeper Jordan Pickford.
First Half
Dewsbury-Hall did his now customary up & under to get things going, and the Blues continued to move the ball around in the Burnley half until a turnover led to a quick Clarets breakaway but the final shot was weak.
McNeil's ball control was questionable in the early exchanges but Beto somehow notched the first Everton corner. Garner looked for Branthwaite but Foster got to it first. Beto forced another corner, played out to Gana whose utterly abysmal attempted shot should see these efforts outlawed.
Ndiaye jinked his way forward but gave the ball away. Everton tried to rebuild again but it was wasteful, Gana booting the ball out of play. Gana went down when he felt the hand of Anthony on his back but McNeil's balloned free-kick was easily gathered by an advancing Dubravka.
Ndiaye had lots of space but played it to O'\Brien on the left wing and his cross was to nobody in particular. Dewsbury-Hall was fouled and Everton restarted the pass-and-move-a-bit workaround that so far had gone precisely nowhere. the ball ultimately gifted to Burnley.
Garner did a great midfield recovery, Dewsbury-Hall deciding to pivot and play it out to McNeil but another awful cross. More workaround finally saw Ndiaye jink inboard, and another corner. This one finally came to Dewsbury-Hall who curled his shot high over the bar.
The Blues were totally dominating the play but creating next to nothing in the first 20 minutes despite loads of possession.
From a deep throw-in Beto did well to play in Ndiaye who looked to shoot but it was blocked. Burnley had some rare possession of their own until they punted forward and behind for an Everton goal-kick.
A long diagonal ball from Tarkowski led to another Everton corner, Tarkowski adjudged to have fouled defender or goalkeeper. Another building venture saw lots more earnest workaround, McNeil eventually fouled.
Garner's free-kick curled away nicely from Dubravka, who had to backtrack while James Tarkowski at the end of the line delivered a perfect header into the far corner.
Burnley got a free-kick that Hannibal sent straight to Pickford. Beto fought his way to a free-kick, Garner playing it short to Dewsbury-Hall who shot over. Beto tried to force something but the ball squirmed across goal and was recovered by Dubravka.
Burnley had another spell of possession that led to nothing. O'Brien got himself into trouble and it needed Garner's clearance to blunt the cross. McNeil played a good ball that Ndiaye had to fight for but then lost.
Garner drove Everton forward, but nothing came of it and Dewsbury-Hall fouled his man. Gana and Ndiaye exchanged a lot of passes wide left and eventually Mykolenko was fouled for a late free-kick in 3 minutes of added time.
Garner put in a beautiful delivery that Branthwaite glanced on but Dubravka punched it away, Dewsbury-Hall following up with a shot that was deflected away from goal and behind. Another corner but Dubravka pounced on McNeil's attempt. Ndiaye felt he was fouled as he fell into the penalty area, VAR deciding it was outside.
From the last throw of the half, another half-chance fell to McNeil but his shot was blocked, and Everton went in at the break a goal to the good, on the back of 62.6% possession.
Second Half
It took a wee while for things to get going after the break, Burnley getting upfield and winning a throw that Walker took long, easily cleared. A scary pass from Dewsbury-Hall was rescued by Tarkowski with Anthony lurking.
A good piece of football saw Ndiaye release Dewsbury-Hall wide left, the cross whipped in to Beto but no clean header for the big galoot. But Burnley were having more of the game until there was a nice counter and Ndiaye scored... but he had gone too far forward and was offside for Gana's pass.
More scrappy rearguard stuff suggested Everton were not exactly paying full attention. Foster was able to advance and win a corner off Branthwate, with changes made by Burnley, Ward-Prowse taking a good corner but it was headed behind at the near post.
Everton passed the ball around nicely until Ndiaye played Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall forward and he deftly clipped the ball over the advancing Dubravka for Everton's second goal of the evening, a very nicely worked team goal.
McNeil made a good run forward but was not supported well enough. Beto spum away from Humphreys who had to drag him back.
Everton settled into a controlling pattern, passing the ball around well and reducing Burnley to rare sights of the ball. A marvellous sequence of skill from Gana saw him make a great holding challenge before he sprung up and floated one for the far corner, smacking off the crossbar.
Dewsbury-Hall was fouled 25 yards out, Garner tapping it for Dewsbury-Hall who stung Dubravka's gloves with a deflected shot. Good pressure led to a corner but not much more.
Great play from Ndiaye saw him whip in a ball but somehow Dubravka got to it at the near post and not Beto. McNeil was played in and crossed for Beto but he seemed to have no idea how to make the ball his own.
McNeil played in Beto but he had aborted his run toward the ball and any chance evaporated. Everton played out the rest of the game fairly comfortably, Moyes making a few changes to break things up.
Right at the death, Burnley won a corner that was flicked at Pickford from close range, who had to produce another lightning-fast reaction save to stop it going in.

Disappointing.
4 Posted 03/03/2026 at 18:28:25
They looked pretty good at Newcastle but Burnley will pack their half and make it difficult for the Blues.
We need to score early to force them to come out of their shell.
They are sure fire relegation fodder but that's when Everton usually come unstuck.
However, a Euro place is still possible but they need to get a run of decent results although some tough ones coming up.
5 Posted 03/03/2026 at 18:28:51
The only thing he did was have a shot that luckily Pope made a hash of and Beto was quick enough to follow up on.
6 Posted 03/03/2026 at 18:31:50
Bring George on early in the second half and watch him score. I would like to see Röhl at some stage too.

I still don't know what Patterson did wrong in the games he had to play for us.
13 Posted 03/03/2026 at 19:17:07
I am one of David Moyes's critics and am surprised he has not made changes. I remember the away game at Forest and the comments then were to keep the same team that won for the next game... and then he made changes and we lost.
You do not bring stability making changes for every game.
14 Posted 03/03/2026 at 19:18:39
He is okay going forward and if we played wingbacks he would be more suitable but O'Brien is quick and good in the air so gets the nod (pardon the pun).
15 Posted 03/03/2026 at 19:51:50
Does it work at home? I think not... but hope it does!

He is having a really good game tbf.
22 Posted 03/03/2026 at 20:57:56
For all our possession we could well be up by more than 2 by now. Some nifty passing on that 2nd. Would like to see any of Rohl, George, and Dibling get a run out now. But we'll probably just get Barry for Beto and some time-wasting subs at 85+ minutes.
Just me or is there a surprising number of empty seats tonight?

Couple of strange posts about the website.
Can you be more specific about the problem(s) you're seeing, please?

We never looked threatened until another good save by Jordan at the end. Bring on the Arsenal!!!
32 Posted 03/03/2026 at 21:47:38
Gana Gueye had a very good game and takes the MotM for me with McNeil proving he's much better than he gets recognised for by many fans on here.
Beto seems to have found the left leg that matches his right one in the last two games to go with the usual hard grafting work he does upfront.
Burnley never offered much resistance to Everton's attacking and they couldn't complain if the score had been higher.
33 Posted 03/03/2026 at 21:48:41
But don't be getting carried away -- it was Burnley we were playing!

The front page is a horrible mess and the owners have been told about this a number of times but feel they have other priorties elsewhere in the stable, so it's hard for us to get things changed. It's the only place where the betting stuff is intrusive, and trust me, it has to be there, but it shouldn't actually get in your way.
But I don't think that affects the functionality of the site, does it? As you say: Comments, articles and live match discussion, that's all we want and need. -- isn't that what you are getting?
Perhaps the secret here is, when you come on the site, just click on the News link and that will take you to a dedicated page with all the latest articles and stories. Just scroll down, click on what interests you, read, Jump to Last and add your comments.
That's what works for me. Please tell me what is happening if that does not work for you.

Moyes's subs were a bit late and baffling though. McNeil and Gana looked knackered, should have subbed them before Beto and Branthwaite.
Fair play to the group of Irish lads at the back of the South Stand, they were singing and bouncing all through the match, helped getting everyone around them going.
41 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:22:42
Finally an easy win. Cant remember the last time that happened. And even if it was only Burnley, it was important to show were a class above, for our confidence, and especially to do it all at home.
Second the others who noted and appreciated the play of McNeil, Beto and Gana, three who have earned their share of criticism. Its especially pleasing to see Dwight play that well, to remind the supporters of his quality, to help the team win two big matches after almost leaving — and to get the deserved applause from the stands at the end.
Right now it feels like anything is possible this season — top 6, stay where we are, or suffer the fate of a tough run this next month or so.
42 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:28:12
Just before half-time, I looked around and just within my seating range I counted six people on their mobile phone, and then when the half time whistle went, I saw my brother walking down the stairs towards me. "How are you?" I asked. "I'm off, Tone," came his reply, "There's no way I can carry on sitting here watching that."
Thankfully it got a little bit better in the second half, and it was nice to see a well worked goal, although it should have been two when Gueye delayed his pass too long and then should have shot, instead of playing Ndiaye in. Experience alone should have made him realise his mate couldn't wait any longer and had already strayed offside.
Gueye was very unlucky with his shot off the bar, and McNeil showed everyone why the manager prefers experience, although with the game won, I'm sure he could have given the younger players a little bit of game time from off the bench?
Great to get the three points, even better when I got home to see Liverpool had been beaten, so a very good night in the end!

44 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:31:26
The wrath of the knowledgeable match goer ringing in his ears has acted as a huge boot up the arse to Moyes...
I also thought that for long periods, the players made a nonsense out of the much peddled myth that they are not able to play nice attractive football. Fair play to them.
Amazing what happens when you remove the straight-jacket.
45 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:50:22
Last game I went to, I was in the Bramley Moore at half time.
46 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:50:44
Dwight McNeil had an outstanding game.
Nice to win at home at last.
47 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:52:13
The format of the comments is all awry. Looks like a cheapo message board. No nice boxes with clear, punctuated text, which make the comments easy to read.
48 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:53:57
Was it playing McNeil instead of George, O'Brien instead of Patterson, Beto instead of Barry, Mykolenko instead of Aznou?
Pushing up as a unit or staying low like Newcastle? Gana playing more as an attacking midfielder than Garner's holding position?
We'd all love to hear your positive tactical feedback, Darren.
49 Posted 03/03/2026 at 22:59:40
Moyes must be delighted he decided not to sell him.
50 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:00:29
Hopefully we can keep also our season going until the final day, which could be a classic at Spurs. Imagine putting Spurs down? It'd be like a fixture from the eighties if that happened, when it wasn't always pleasant at the football!
51 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:01:16
Now please excuse me while I go finish the rest of my crow thanks to Dwight McNeil's performance.
52 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:06:27
Other than that a welcome win, happy days and some nice interplay at times.
Beto has certainly upped his game and the difference it makes to the team is evident.
53 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:06:47
Moyes could have given George or Dibling a few more minutes than 10 or 5. Why did he take Jarrad off? He wasn't struggling and it's not like we have another match in a few days?
54 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:12:18
Dewsbury-Hall was Man of the Match for me, and while not everything came off for Ndiaye it is a pleasure to watch him. Excellent save from Pickford at the death.
The walk back to the car didn't seem as long tonight (and no parking ticket).
55 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:35:46
I know Burnley are poor, but at times we played some good football and could have won by more. The midfield linked really well as the match progressed, Gana and Ndiaye back to their best and a return of McNeil Mk 1 from a previous season.
It's also nice to see a defender who can pass again now Branthwaite is back. Only Beto didn't have a good game, second to too many balls and not on the same page as the others.
56 Posted 03/03/2026 at 23:42:40
I know he didn't score, but at least he's trapping the ball & turning centre-backs. Not like earlier in the season, when he could trap a ball further than I could kick it.
57 Posted 03/03/2026 at 00:11:14
Dewsbury-Hall is the instigator. He is a terrific footballer with a winning mentality.
58 Posted 04/03/2026 at 06:23:08
I'll keep it short and say that the game just showed how poor Burnley are and how effective set pieces can be if kept simple rather than all that wrestling on the goal line.
59 Posted 04/03/2026 at 07:05:59
We have the ability to beat any side in the Premier League. It's mostly a mental thing that we lose some of the games that we shouldn't lose. Hopefully, this win at home should provide us with greater confidence to claim Hill Dickinson Stadium as a stronghold.
60 Posted 04/03/2026 at 07:46:22
Dewsbury-Hall was superb. Beto's hold up play, lay-offs, and runs into defenders was top-notch. Tarkowski was, in a word, great. Gana, one thing bad, next thing good, but that near goal bordered after the tackle on world class.
And yet another worldie at the death from our best keeper since Neville Southall, may his name be praised. Garner, a couple of sublime deliveries, has to play in midfield where he covers so much ground.
MotM: Dewsbury-Hall
Serious questions need to be asked if TFG and Saint Daniel the Absent with their 'ace' recruitment team do not give us the summer we need and deserve.
61 Posted 04/03/2026 at 08:02:43
Gueye had a 5-minute spell where he looked like Messi, before he was subbed, he was imperious and back to his very best. Ndiaye is a joy to watch and could become truly world class if his decision-making improves a bit, I expect we will receive some large bids for his services.
McNeil had a great game, again, and is perhaps getting his sharpness and desire back, after a difficult couple of years?
My only gripe now is that we have so few games coming up (only 2 games in the next 38 days, for fuck's sake!!). It's a spring break for Everton and punishment for going out of the cups so early.
These long breaks always seem to come at a bad time for us, we could do with some momentum but now have no football to watch at what is a busy time of the season for other big clubs. At least very few weekends can be ruined until my birthday, then we face the RS!
62 Posted 04/03/2026 at 08:17:11
Added bonus was Dewsbury-Hall's goal took us out of 20th position in the table for goals scored at home from open play; we are now 19th.
8 goals scored from open play in 15 home games.
63 Posted 04/03/2026 at 08:29:02
We've beaten Brighton, Palace, Fulham, Forest, and now Burnley at home. Get a grip lad.
That's top stuff. Europe beckons.
64 Posted 04/03/2026 at 09:06:37
65 Posted 04/03/2026 at 09:10:44
I got it wrong pre-game saying 4/7 was a poor price for us to win, we won in a canter which did suprise me. Shows what I know.
I did get the Beto before Barry choice at least right; of the two, I would start Beto every time. There's not much between them but I think Beto shades it.
66 Posted 04/03/2026 at 09:31:00
67 Posted 04/03/2026 at 09:55:55
They played some really nice one touch football in the 2nd half, the likes I haven't seen us play for many a year. My criticism is.we still don't create or score enough goals.
Ndiaye is a highly talented footballer who is a joy to watch but I just wish he would shoot more when inside the box. I thought Dewsbury-Hall was instrumental in everything good we did and his goal tally of 6 so far is a good return considering he was out for a few weeks.
I thought Gana played some lovely one touch football in and around the Burnley box and had that shot go in rather than hit the bar it would have been a goal of the season contender.
I know it was only Burnley but nice to see this group play some really attractive football. I thought McNeil was magnificent last night. I did question Moyes about starting him against Newcastle but he played well against them and last night deserved his standing ovation when he went off.
68 Posted 04/03/2026 at 10:00:43
I thought we played the style we want to see Everton play for 15 minutes after the 2nd goal. One- and two-touch fast passing and movement.
I would like to see us play like that from the first whistle.
69 Posted 04/03/2026 at 10:10:11
I couldn't agree more and as that spell showed in the 2nd half they are well capable of playing this way. It was enjoyable to watch and we looked a far better side for playing this way.
Obviously we have to take into account the opposition, but certainly at home I hope we continue to play with the style that we did for periods of the 2nd half.
70 Posted 04/03/2026 at 10:25:21
I think Moyes will keep that starting eleven for the rest of the season -- fitness permitting.
71 Posted 04/03/2026 at 12:21:34
Let's do a job on Arsenal and continue to press for a European place and a strong finish in the Premier League.
72 Posted 04/03/2026 at 12:27:32
How can a team have such poor home form and such good away form. That is the wrong way around.
An interesting fact. That is twice a Moyes team has gone 6 games at home without a win. 09/10 season - it was 5 draws and a loss. It was ended on 28/12 with a 2-0 home win against. . . . . . Burnley
Agree with posters saying Moyes needs to bring on subs earlier, especially George, Dibling and Röhl to give them experience. Whilst a lot moan about him not playing youngsters, he has started 2 teenagers this year and would have been 3 but George had his 20th birthday 6 days before the Bournemouth match. Our 30 year olds are Tarkowski, Gana, Pickford (excused because Goalies are usually better in their 30s) plus Keane, Grealish and Coleman so we are losing those older players. How long before it is a Branthwaite-O'Brien pairing at centre half - currently an average of 24¼?
Did note Moyes said before Newcastle that Gana and Ndiaye were not in shape when they came back from AFCON and needed work on their fitness. Maybe Gana's performance last night showed that he was now back to where he should be. I thought he was unlucky when he hit the bar, having won the ball back first.
And in the words of John Motson - when the result from Molineaux came in - "this (evening) just gets better and better".
9 games to go. 11 points from them last season. I reckon we need 16 or 17 and finish on 60 points or better. What is frustrating is that CL is 5 places so the evil empire probably will sneak in behind Villa and United - while we will probably miss out.
73 Posted 04/03/2026 at 12:36:45
I thought Gana had his best game for a long time, linking with Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall. McNeil too was a threat. When we moved the ball quickly we looked so much better.
I would've thought at 2-0 he could have put George and Dibling on way earlier, a perfect game with Burnley offering little threat, easier to come on 2-0 up than 2 down.
Oh and why would Ndiaye want to leave for another club when he gets a reception like that from every corner when walking around the pitch?
Great to see home fans enjoying BMD.
74 Posted 04/03/2026 at 13:42:15
Dewsbury-Hall had a good game and scored a very good well-worked goal by three or four players but, in the first half, he made as many mistakes as he did v Newcastle as good moves.
I thought he showed an arrogant side in a very poor way when he sat on the floor making it plain, to the crowd and TV cameras that Beto was to blame for the cock-up when they got mixed up over the ball.
To me, it was clear that Beto had the ball, and it was Dewsbury-Hall who bumped into him but claiming, by his actions, that Beto didn't know what he was doing.
I didn't like that at all. He might be a better player but don't try and make a fool out of a team mate when you are to blame.
75 Posted 04/03/2026 at 14:08:53
The first sight of the pitch and stands was a Wow moment, surpassing all the photos I've seen. Don't know if the lights heightened the effect but it looked hyper-realistic.
A great view from the South Stand; you feel you are right up against the pitch but the distance is sufficient that you don't even have to move your head to see from corner to corner. The elevated position means you can see all the action rather than trying to see through bodies.
I can't complain about a comfortable win but Burnley were very poor, with neither craft nor determination. Our players' attitude was spot on, and Dwight must have regained possession for us a dozen times on his own.
Some nice play but still too many minor mistakes. Dewsbury-Hall is a dynamo but he played a few reckless / poorly directed passes that could have caused us major problems against better opponents.
The crowd was content but generally very quiet and there seemed like a lot of empty seats when I started scanning the terraces in the second half.
Steak pie was delicious, seemed top quality to me. Pricey, yes, but that's got to be expected.
76 Posted 04/03/2026 at 14:17:52
While we were walking to the ground, a few young Burnley fans joined us and, when the stadium came into view, they all said "Wow, that looks fantastic!"
They asked whether it was as good inside as it was outside; we said, yes, it was. All 4 of them predicted an easy win for us and thankfully they were right.
77 Posted 04/03/2026 at 14:25:56
We all see a different game and, just like Saturday, it was nice to see Gueye and Ndiaye passing and moving with a little bit of telepathy, so hopefully it spreads through the team.
Pass and move, it got better... but it should be so much better than it is. As I said, we all see a different game; as bad as Burnley were, I just thought everyone looked a lot more comfortable with Jarrad Branthwaite back in the team, looking physically stronger.
78 Posted 04/03/2026 at 14:53:42
Burnley offered very little, Hannibal in the middle was lucky not to be booked. How Ward Prowse didn't start that game is beyond me. I don't think I would take anyone from Burnley if and when they go down.
I couldn't split my MotM last night between McNeil or Gana, both had strong games.
Maybe Patric can now write an article on both as having a resurgence with the blues rather than 'enough is enough' or 'times up' negative stuff.
Warm weather training in Portugal awaits. What a time to be a pro footballer.

I also spotted empty seats in all four stands. Not as bad as Bournemouth but still very obvious. The East Stand seems to be the worst 'offender' of the four.

I thought we were poor and unimaginative in the first half, but showed great improvement in the second.
Credit to McNeil too, I am one of his biggest critics but he put in a decent shift against Burnley.
Substitutions could have been made earlier I think. If we need some of those lads during the run in, they are going up be seriously undercooked. But Moyes isn't big on rotation is he?
I tried to send this post just after the match but wasn't able to

We have a very long break that has just started.

Normally I'd be inclined to eat my own fingers before coughing that up for a pie but I am inclined to view it as including a sort of charitable contribution to the club.
I accept that, for occasional attenders like, me it's much less irksome than it is for the stalwarts who don't miss a game.
