If there is one thing we Evertonians know intimately, it is the profound, soul-sapping embrace of deliberately lowered expectations.
So, as the Scottish FA reels from Steve Clarke’s utterly predictable 2026 World Cup exit — resigning yesterday, a mere 30 days after signing a contract until 2030, in a display of administrative foresight that would make even the Goodison Park board blush— they face a daunting task. How do you possibly replace a man who successfully managed to make reaching a major tournament feel like a gruelling shift down the pit?
Step forward, David William Moyes.
According to whispers floating out of Hampden Park (presumably carried on a bitter, freezing wind), the former Everton, Manchester United, and West Ham overlord is the "outstanding candidate" to take the reins. And honestly? It makes perfect sense. If you are a nation whose entire footballing identity is predicated on glorious failure and dour pragmatism, Moyes isn't just a candidate; he is your ultimate divine destiny.
Let us objectively examine why "Dithering Dave" is the single most highly qualified man in world football to guide the Tartan Army into their next cycle of inevitable disappointment.
-
A Masterclass in Expectation Management: Steve Clarke did a fine job of telling everyone Scotland were just happy to be there, but Moyes wrote the book on it. Imagine the sheer poetry of Moyes facing the Scottish press before a crucial qualifier against San Marino, solemnly declaring that "we're taking a knife to a gunfight, but the lads will run hard." He will have the entire country convinced that securing a 0-0 draw at home against the Faroe Islands is a tactical triumph on par with peak Guardiola.
-
The Tactical "Nuance": Under Clarke, Scotland played a rugged back five and hoped Scott McTominay would spontaneously turn into prime Zinedine Zidane. Moyes can take this further. He will reintroduce the low-block 4-5-1, ensuring that no Scottish player crosses the halfway line unless they have filled out the proper requisition forms in triplicate. Possession will be viewed not as a tool for creating chances, but as a dangerous liability to be handed back to the opposition as quickly as possible.
-
A Ruthless Youth Policy: There are some exciting young Scottish talents emerging. Billy Gilmour is in his prime, and younger lads are knocking on the door. Moyes will brilliantly protect these youngsters from the harsh realities of international football by never, ever playing them. Why risk a 21-year-old with technical ability when you can unearth a 34-year-old journeyman who "knows the ropes" and can do a job tracking back?
To fully grasp the seamless transition the SFA is looking at, one only needs to look at the data:
| Tactical Trait | Steve Clarke’s Scotland | David Moyes’s Blueprint |
| Formation | 5-4-1 and pray. | 4-5-1 and tell the press it's actually an attacking 4-3-3. |
| View on Possession | A dangerous novelty. | Something the other team does before we concede from a set-piece. |
| Attacking Strategy | Cross it to someone who isn't a striker. | Earn a corner in the 88th minute; send the centre-backs up. |
| Go-to Excuse | "We are just little Scotland." | "I thought the boys showed great character after going 3-0 down." |
Moyes appears to be set for another fabulous season of mediocrity in charge of resurgent Everton, who escaped the increasingly dreadful Moshiri years and surged up the Premier League table to an incredible 13th-place finish that surprised everyone under his frugal and uninspiring leadership.
But the call of his homeland must be strong. Who else possesses the unique blend of furrowed brows, defensive stubbornness, and an innate ability to make a 1-0 victory over Haiti look like a desperate rearguard action at Rorke's Drift?
The SFA needs to get this deal over the line immediately. Offer him a 10-year contract. Promise him total control over the height of the grass at Hampden. Assure him that he will never, under any circumstances, be asked to play expansive, attacking football.
It is time to bring the Moyesiah home. Let the relentless, doggedly depressing era begin. We wouldn't wish it on anyone else, but for Scotland? It’s a match made in heaven.

I had built my hopes up to a peak of frienzied excitement and anticipaton, writing up the dream scenario -- and you just shot it to pieces... or perhaps I should say stuck a knife into the bleeding heart of it, as Moyes ain't got no guns.

If this has been in the offing for a little while, it could help explain some of Moyes recent behaviour. His 'up yours' to the fans, heading out to the World Cup etc.
Let's face it, we know he likes to 'plan for the future'. The way the Scots FA works, I'm sure they've been in his ears for months/years.

Please, Moyesy, it's what you need to do, so thanks for the brief memories and depart leaving us Toffees to rekindle some hope.

Your Man City and Arsenal have spent bleeding fortunes on players that can knock the ball around and can even pass it to a team mate... unlike ours.
I will take a bet now whoever is our next manager will be deemed crap by some after his first season.
13 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:06:50
It would be just our luck for us to end up with Steve Clarke as a natural successor with the same philosophy of dour, cautious, negative football.
14 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:13:30
If the SFA offer him a 4-year deal he'll bite their hand off and, if it happens, I will say 10 Our Fathers, 10 Hail Marys and a dozen Glory Bes because that will mean there is a God.
Everything crossed.
15 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:15:11
Man's a tired old has-been who churns out more manure than a Shire horse.
We won't be lucky enough that he'll return to his homeland. He'd also be an awful international manager.
16 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:23:37
We are stuck with this energy-sapping parasite until he gets sacked (again).
17 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:24:03
They could not make a better pair... and remember no transfers, so it's not his fault.
18 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:32:53
Mike you had me laughing out loud. More please.
A depressed as ever, Evertonian.
19 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:49:53
Seriously, this couldn't happen, could it - we should start a campaign "Moyes for Scotland" to firmly let the dinoasour know he goes with our full blessing, no hard feelings ( most of us anyway ).
20 Posted 28/06/2026 at 13:54:52
Up the fuckin toffays.
I will contribute to the campaign funding Oliver.

A Leeds supporting friend of mine asked me the other day if Moyes was to start playing more attacking football, changed his management style, etc and was doing well, would I still want him gone?
My answer was: "Don't be stupid, his management style is never going to change." "Why?" he asked, to which I replied, "Because he hasn't a clue about the modern game and tactics."

27 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:32:29
But this being Everton, if there was any truth in it then TFG would probably spoil the pot by demanding compensation.
28 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:35:00
Moyes on the underachievement gravy train again.
29 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:46:36
Am I frustrated at the manager's tactics at times? Yes, the fact that no one has signed yet? Yes... but it's still early and little business has been done.
If we manage to persuade both Jack and Jarrod to sign for us, then in the big part it will down to the fact they still have faith in Moyes as a manager, so there may yet be life in the old dog and not going anywhere North just yet!
30 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:48:48
Time to get Glasner ASAP
31 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:50:09
Think of all of those shopping trips along Via dei Mille when you jet off to catch 90 minutes of McTominay then head off down to Sorrento under the setting sun or dine in Positano, maybe even a bit further along the Almalfi coast mmm...?
Lovely!
I fancy a bit of that myself!
32 Posted 28/06/2026 at 15:59:07
Its exciting then it's not as the realisation hits home.
Hes going nowhere..
"Am I frustrated at the Managers tactics at times yes"
What times and tactics are you not frustrated with?

I'm genuinely interested in the times during last season Martin considered that what he was watching was not frustrating.
37 Posted 28/06/2026 at 16:33:30
I would love it to happen!
38 Posted 28/06/2026 at 16:33:47
It's not faith, it's laziness, it's gullability or a simple act of desperation.
£300k + a week for 2 players, one pushing 31 and the other pushing 30 and probably £70m in transfer fees.
I know let's get John Stones in as well, he'd fit right in being 32, a sick note and will possibly sign for 50% of his Man City wages so a very cost effective £125k a week!!
We're currently quibbling over £20m for arguably one of the best up & coming midfielders in English football not to mention the £18m we've just spent on Rohl. The Club have also been reluctant to play either Patterson or Iroegbunam as that would trigger clauses costing the club a combined £3.5m.
Financially the club is no better off than it was last season but yeah as wages now come out of the transfer budget let's spend the best part of £120m on Grealish & Bowen.
Buy them on the drip? Ok... that's £40m to find every year for 3 years with zero sell on value.
Our turnover last year was only a few million more than Bournemouth which only has a 11200 ground capacity, 3.5 times less than Goodison.
If you can show me where the money will come from for such transfers I'd be well chuffed... and I've worked in football finance for decades.
We need to look at the likes of Brentford, Crystal Palace & Brighton and buy smarter.
Bottom line is if we want to attract the calibre of player who demands a 6 figure weekly wage our commercial turnover must be increased to aound £325 - £350m whilst bearing in mind that the 5th richest Premier League club barely escaped relegation, Spurs. The 8th richest club is being forced to sell players, Newcastle, & the 9th Richest club, West Ham, has been relegated.
We're currently 11th or 12th depending on which figures you look at - either above or below Palace.

40 Posted 28/06/2026 at 17:34:50
Can you really picture Moyes taking a 90% pay cut to manage Scotland?
He's making £5m a year at Everton. Scotland pays its national team manager less than £500k.
What true Scotsman would do that?
And even if he were so inclined, what true Scotsman's wife would allow it?
Nah. Ain't happening.
41 Posted 28/06/2026 at 17:52:02
He's got months left on his current deal, that's not going to be factor on what contract he signs next. If he knows TFG aren't going to extend his deal I think he would see this as the best way to end his career.
42 Posted 28/06/2026 at 18:02:37
But seriously, Dan has some serious asset accumulation. Surely, he could structure something to close the gap enough to maybe have Dave thinking of legacy. Deep down, I think that may matter a mill or two to him. I don't think he is going for 1000 premier league matches.

A crowd that demands a certain type of play up there
45 Posted 28/06/2026 at 18:33:16
Were stuck with his mediocrity until at least Christmas.
If things are going pear shaped by then and were seesawing around 16th or 17th in the table we may see TFG get their act together and sack him.Dont put your mortgage on it though, these are not football people and have a different set of priorities to diehard Evertonians.
Of course if they get rid of him then all the best candidates will be employed elsewhere
Nothing new there then!
46 Posted 28/06/2026 at 18:42:07
David Moyes is the master of lowering the bar and earning millions peddling mediocrity.

55 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:05:23
A dreamworld without PSR, without year-on-year losses, without one of the Premier League's highest debts, lowest revenues, and smallest squads.
A paradise where the wicked wizard Moyes is dispatched back to Scotland and replaced by the ghost of Howard Kendall.
Where season tickets are free, stadium capacity unlimited, where Everton is the big "one", where Everton never concede and every week, every player scores a hat-trick and ToffeeWeb is not just tired clickbait.
56 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:08:11
In my job (Chef), I'm in daily contact with the public, inevitably red or blue in conversation turns up. I can honestly say 90% blues want him gone.
57 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:10:00
We are nuts.
58 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:17:09
A fantasy where there is never any criticism of such a beloved leader as Moyes.
59 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:20:53
Certainly the TW and Grand Old Team fansites are solidly against him, but those are samplings of fans who choose to join.

61 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:43:00
Now my memory may be playing tricks but a few years ago didn't the Blue Union have a cake based procession down Goodison Rd ?A few hundred wanting big changes at the top. And was it not at that game that, in true North Korean style, pictures of the greatest ever Dave Hickson fan were flashed up on the screens to rapturous applause?
I wonder if, after decades of mediocrity, many fans are just apathetic? Plus ca change and all that
62 Posted 28/06/2026 at 20:56:51
63 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:15:00
The main point is I haven't spoken to one Evertonian who wants him to stay.
Either in the ground, concourses and in seats.
64 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:18:39
65 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:27:52
But Evertonians are quite genteel compared to, say, the Roma ultras. Im skeptical that the fans have the attention of our ownership on this issue.
66 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:31:16
Fan forums have strong opinions,, a lot of them well thought out, reasoned.
Put the two together and lets see.
I have respect for our manager, hes nobodys fool.
Id love to know the honest truth about our owners plans, it might be that David Moyes is frustrated, constricted, but also contracted and well paid.
At some stage TFG have to look at a succession scenario, is that plan already drafted, scheduled, dormant. ?
How much freedom would a new manager have? What budget, how much say in transfers?
The owners are silent, what does that tell us?
Maybe their plans are not pallitable enough to share.
67 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:31:29
It happened a good few times last season
Different gravy in Serie A Mike.
Ultras have a big say at most of the clubs.
68 Posted 28/06/2026 at 22:44:15
I hope it happens - and soon.
Then we can forget about both for a few years until the World Cup qualifiers come around and Scotland arrive at the must win game.
Then that will be the end of that.
The only downside I can see is for Patterson...
"Patto, Moyes is leaving."
Patto punches air, "Woo, woo."
"He's going to Scotland."
"Doh."
As we apparently line up for another season of 'Stability' even the Tea Lady is starting to look good right now.
Pochettino to fly back with Davy post World Cup? Howe, Fabergas, Le Bris?
Somebody, anybody?
Likely nobody.
Edit; How long will the 'powers that be' be able to console themselves that the empty seats are all paid for before realising that empty seats buy no beer, no salt and pepper chicken, no blue donuts for the kids, in fact - no Merch of any sort.???

We may not have billions to spend but we to a man try our best whether defending Everton in the canteen or turning up to welcome the bus.
If anyone lacks that level of commitment, then go. You will not be missed. Moyes, take note, and go gracefully.

81 Posted 29/06/2026 at 08:59:28
So its highly unlikely that 90% of Evertonians want Moyes sacked. Wishful thinking from the Moyes haters. A poll would be interesting.
All that said, the Scottish FA need to make him the right offer! Its his destiny!

You must have self-serving or self-selected friends Mr. Carr.
84 Posted 29/06/2026 at 09:29:51
Its dead obvious that a tiny group of random Toffee Web posters (you could count them on one hand) are 100% right and that every Everton supporter wants Moyes gone. Or at least 90% of them anyway to be scientifically accurate, as thats important on here. How silly of me to pretend otherwise when the evidence is right in front of me!!
Funny that. 🙂🙂

I cant understand why there has been such a decline and with very few Scottish players playing in the Premier league, it makes trying to build a succesful national team near impossible.

Jimmy isnt a big fan of Moyes, but blows a gasket when anyone criticises Davie.
And Jimmy doesnt like people who disagree with Jimmy.
90 Posted 29/06/2026 at 11:49:22
I also don't think changing the manager again will make us into a team that challenges for the top. We have tried that scenario umpteen times before and it's not worked, why should it now. Managers are easy and convenient targets as it deflects from focusing on players deficiencies.
If we change Moyes for some wet behind the ears Johnny come lately it could go horribly wrong. I get fans impatience with Moyes but if we do get rid it needs to be for a very good experienced manager.
Sorry for repeating the same conclusion again but in my opinion it's the quality of players in the squad that will bring us success not who is our manager.
91 Posted 29/06/2026 at 12:11:13
" I also don't think changing the manager again will make us into a team that challenges for the top. "
Keeping the manager definitely makes us a team that won't challenge for the top

Either that or he's mutton
93 Posted 29/06/2026 at 12:35:40
You can buy the best tools, or have them supplied to you, but if you don't use them properly*
'All the Gear - No Idea' is the phrase.
* 'somebody' supplied Moyes with an alleged 'decent' Centre Half, now has he been using him properly?
Anecdotally he is renowned for Sq pegs into round holes - is that best use of the tools provided?
If the 1 forward DCL, Beto or Barry are left isolated, while trying to convert...as best as their various limited skills allow...a couple or 3 of half chances. Whose fault is that?
The Managers actions or lack of must have an effect...and under The Moyes Effect we don't play very well.

At least someone is. You seem to be in your applecart with the Moyesiah... 👍😁
102 Posted 29/06/2026 at 15:14:41
Watching and manager selections and decisions really pissing me off. I also travel to a fair few away games where you get more of a sense of what the fans think as we all sat in one area and I have yet to hear any David Moyes lovers last season where I travelled. I do agree be careful what you wish for but Dave is a dinosaur and hes stubborn and wont change. Tarks will be his number one again this season Ive got my head in my hands already. Send dour on loan to Scotland for rest of his contract and pay his salary then they can have him on a free transfer 😄. There are lots of managers who would join us for a salary of 5.5 million a year. Enjoy the football this season week in week out because I know the rest of us wont

The people who are surprised at my detestation of Moyes are inevitably supporters of other clubs who have forgotten that we were once a top club or Blues who never go to the match.
It is no coincidence that he is also disliked by supporters of West Ham, Sunderland and Manure. Sadly far too many of ours overlooked Moyes eleven years of mediocrity propping up the Kenwright regime, but I think most of them have changed their minds by now.

of course it could also be a strategy to make the Friedkins think he's ini demand and so can ask for a longer deal, but that would be a bit Machiavellian,. I think there's a real chance he goes.

Misery gutts is no spring chicken anymore, there's no guarantee he'd be offered it in the future if any new manager is remotely successful.
He may see this as his last chance, no trainer really, part time job on big money, he cant use transfer funds and resources as an excuse though, he'll have the pick of scottish talent.

Nagleman was very well thought of in the Bundesliga, he won the title with Bayern and won manager of the season as well as other honours.
He plays open attacking football but as you know...International football is a different game, slower, more tactical and full of players who never play as a team for long periods.
And let's be honest...CoCo the clown would be an upgrade on Moyes.
135 Posted 30/06/2026 at 13:41:50
I suspect he will need to drop a level now to prove himself again.
136 Posted 30/06/2026 at 13:51:03
However if I was TFG I'd be contacting them and letting them know we'd waive any compensation and throw in his entire backroom for free.
Then, as Daniel #30 said, go and get Glasner who is still available.
137 Posted 30/06/2026 at 14:27:25
I dont care who we get as our next manager, just as long has his attention to detail is better than everyone elses!

He arrived in 2001 when - apart from the Joe Royle year - we had flirted with relegation for most of the previous 10. He stabilised the club playing no lose football but then with Yak, Cahill, Baines, Osman, Pienaar, Gravesen, Arteta played some reasonably decent football. Lynx body spray's slogan is "first impressions last" and lots of us (about 99%) remember the early days of his first stay and not the mid to later years.
Bobby Brown Shoes benefitted from his organisation and added Lukaku and we were all happy. With us sliding down again and Moshiri in place we have gone through 6 managers in 9 years and the 99% crave to go back to the free flowing attacking sexy football of those last 9 years. It was a joy to go to GP to see the goals flow in. Wonderful Carlo with James, DCL and Richy with 47 goals in just one season. How many more was that than the horrible football we saw last season? Exactly the same. Can't be. Surely not. Dour Davey's team scoring as many as Carlo's super forwards who we all drooled over.
So 99% want him gone. Replaced by Glasner - whose team scored 41 last season - even less than our awful football.
Basically the 99% want to gamble. A roll of the dice in the hope of a bright young thing who will either reach the stars or crash and burn.
2002/2025 - saved from relegation
2003/2026 - Stability
2004/ - 4th and Champ League.
Personally I don't want crash and burn and would not take the gamble. And given the fortune they have amassed, I don't think TFG are gamblers. They bought a historical brand with a new ground and revenue stream which was locked into the high income EPL for a song as a result of a fire sale from the previous owner. They are not going to risk that. They want a safe pair of hands, no matter how boring it may be.
And let's be fair. Most of us have invested a lifetime into this club and even if 30,000 STH said no more, there are another 30,000 waiting in the queue. And we won't decide to support another club. Moan all you wish, won't make any difference - especially as the owners are never here to see a march down Regents Road with "Moyes Out, Friedkin Out" banners.
And talking of boring - sorry this is a boring letter because it is what will happen, not what 99% want to happen.
140 Posted 30/06/2026 at 16:13:19
Basically, the 1% are happy to finish between 10th and 13th EVERY season.
Do you attend home matches Phil?
141 Posted 30/06/2026 at 16:24:45
I thought they got completely overrun during the second half yesterday, and as much as I love watching them, I just thought they were set-up wrong yesterday, which means their coach lacked attention to detail!
All opinions, his high energy strategy would definitely go down well amongst the watching crowd inside Bramley Moore, but going back to that attention to detail, I think its pretty clear to me as a longstanding supporter of Everton, that Evertonians, love fast, aggressive, in there face, front foot football, and hey we havent really played like that for over forty years.
No wonder we have to suffer the indignity of listening to those taunting kopites, singing that absolutely embarrassing song (to me) every single time we play them.

143 Posted 30/06/2026 at 20:38:03
Tell you what - far happier to finish 10-13th than 15-17th with possible option of 18th to 20th. Or would you prefer the excitement of the latter?
Any views on the last 9 years in comparison? Which ones after BBS was sacked for 14th again, got you really excited and were a return for those days of wonderful school of science football?

145 Posted 01/07/2026 at 04:56:40
But you failed to mention Palace actually won something. In fact, during his stint with Palace, hasn't Glasner won more trophies than Dinosaur Dave has in his entire career?
But let's stick with your version of Moyes and enjoy constant purgatory
146 Posted 01/07/2026 at 09:31:10
I've said before that if we ever bring a decent manager in again, we need to have patience. Yes they might flirt with relegation but it'll take years to change this culture and it won't be smooth. Most importantly is giving us a chance of winning something, 13th is not winning.
147 Posted 01/07/2026 at 09:57:28
Didnt we finish17th in season 2022/2023 under Dyche and 16th the previous season under Lampard.
148 Posted 01/07/2026 at 10:09:33
We were also 18th when Koeman was sacked, 18th when Marco Silva was sacked, 19th when Lampard was sacked.
What gets me Brian is the 99% on here never compare Moyes with any of the 5 failures since he was last here and call him out for leaving at the end of his contract to go to United but not Carlo who walked out on the club while still under contract.
And it is like Starmer at PMQs. While he will always point to "the last 14 years. . . . " as a get out of any of his failings, this is the other way around and anything positive compared to the last 10 years is cried down because it is either forgotten or some magical manager would instantly transform this team into one which will stuff PSG 6-0 every time we meet them.

How many times have we ENDED the season in 17th position.?
Your original post suggested it was a regular occurance
151 Posted 01/07/2026 at 11:18:45
2001–02: 15th
2002–03: 7th
2003–04: 17th
2004–05: 4th
2005–06: 11th
2006–07: 6th
2007–08: 5th
2008–09: 5th
2009–10: 8th
2010–11: 7th
2011–12: 7th
2012–13: 6th
2024-25: 13th
2025-26: 13th
Average position: 9th
9th is not boring or mediocre in the slightest, so best not to gamble and take the risk of finishing higher. Or, god forbid, take the risk of winning a trophy.
As for Glasner as a potential replacement, he disqualified himself by winning the FA Cup and the European Conference League with a club that had never won a major trophy in their history. Not to mention winning the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Hes not for us.
