Everton watching Huth situation

20/05/2012 | Comments (43)
Everton are monitoring the situation at Stoke where Robert Huth has apparently reached an impasse over an extension to his contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The imposing German defender has been on David Moyes's shopping list before and The Mail report that he could be interested again if no agreement is reached and Stoke decide to offload Huth this summer rather than lose him for free in a year's time.

That can only mean one of our four centre halves is on his way as I cannot see Huth signing up to be a mere squad player.
I suppose Jags is the most likely to go as he would attract at least a £10M fee but Johnny never comes across as totally happy here.

What about DM's promise to LOWER the age of the squad? Where does Duffy stand in all this??

The only player we can let go at centre back is Distin in a season or so... we must keep Jags and Baines. They are both young and both are British.

We should not waste any resources on Centre Backs. Even if Jagielka is sold (hopefully not) we'd still have Heitings Distin and Duffy with the possibility of Rodwell, Hibbert and even neville covering there. Rodwell should really start moving back to contest for those spots because I don't think he has the awareness to play in midfield. Like Heitinga and Jagielka before him he looks out of place and at ease with letting people run in behind him. Rodwell with Heitinga coaching alongside him could become one of the classiest ball playing centre back pairings in the league. Please not Robert Huth.

I would rather we didn't sell anybody but, if we did sell Heitinga or Jagielka, I think Huth is a decent replacement. He has plenty of Premier League experience and can score the odd goal too.

Depends on how much he would cost ? as always!

i suspect it would be Johnny to go to be honest. Like post 331 suggests, he never appears to (if you believe the media reports) be totally happy at Everton.
I have to say though he has been excellent this season, certainly the second half. I don't think Huth would be such a bad acquisition....

I'm amazed we haven't signed Cuellar, utility defender released on a free, I thought Moyes would have snapped him up by now.

Personally, a new centre back would be about 10th on my list of signings.

Huth is a talented cb and offers a goal threat, but he would still set us back a few million, irrespective of his contract position. We could get Kelly for free who can cover at cb and would give us another rb option.

Was this not the position he came up through the academy in? The next Rio Ferdinand he was called. Why after 18 years of being taught to play centreback would he suddenly know how to play midfield? So its fine if people are running off him in midfield playing around him and walking all over him? Him and Fellaini made one of the worst central midfield pairings under Moyes's reign. Negative, paint drying, sideways crab like passing with no invention, no forward motion and no urgency. Rodwell has all the attributes to play at centrback, he even said himself he prefers to have the game unfold infront of him rather than take the ball with his back to goal. Pace, technique, strength and height, could easily learn to play centreback, but knowing us he won't get a game there and then we'll have to watch as Ferguson plays him every game and makes him, Smalling and Jones England's back line for the next ten years.

Not sure where he will play next season. Perhaps he will play with Gibson, with Fellaini playing further forward. Whatever Rodwell needs to stop the negative crab stuff. He has pace and power and can drive forward more.

Hopefully with some competition he will up his game. Centre half, he can't get a game, right back may be.

I would be very very surprised if Rodwell made it as a centre half,he's missing 3 of the most important attributes needed to play there.Lacks bravery, cant tackle or header.

In common with most Evertonians,I have never seen Rodwell at centre half and I am struggling to recall any game I left raving about his capabilities in midfield.I have always regarded him as capable at best, viewing his efforts very much as `work in progress`.
I was, however, more impressed with him on his full England debut where playing with better players seemed to give him a much greater dregree of confidence to do more than pass back or sideways as is his wont.

I thought Rodwell was going to be an excellent midfielder (for utd because we wouldnt have been able to keep hold of him) when he first came on the scene.

He seemed to be able to move at pace from a standing start without having to build upto that speed. There were times (against that Greek side in particular) when he would glide past players with ease.I couldnt wait untill he had more confidence and experience so he would be doing it more often.

The thing is I dont think he has come along at all and I was surprised at his England performances.

Why was there so much difference between his England (I know there was only 2) and Everton displays?

Huth interest can only mean A CB is on the way.

There are rumours circulating that Jags had a spat with Moyes so it could be him or it could be Distin who will be out of contract in June.

As regards Rodwell it is not that long ago that Rodwell was being hailed as the new Bobby Moore or Bechenbauer.

The kid has had some serious injury problems but at his best is a really good player.

I wish some Evertoians would get over this instant dislike of a player if he has a few indifferent games.

The games he played in last season he was coming back from injury and we were not playing well as a team.

When he played for England he showed his true potential by playing with good players and plenty of movement around him.

Paul to be fair he has

A) played in a poor team
B) has been injured a lot
C) needs true competition for places to up his game.

If he is going to be the new ray Wilkins he can go. I hope this negative stops, it seems to be the everton phase that everton went through with arteta et al. Keep the ball and go know here ala Barnes and red knapp circa 96.

If i'm honest I asked the question hoping someone else would say what I was thinking so it wouldnt seem like I was Moyes bashing again.

I think the difference might be down to what he had been told or not told to do.There is no doubt Rodwell had a different mentality playing for England. He was more attacking, didnt slow the pace down and even got in the box looking to get on the end of crosses.

Things he rarely does for Everton, something that makes me think he is told to play that or is afraid to be more adventurous because if it doesnt come off he'll get an earfull.

Paul - you kind of hope he would fit in with Gibson, Fellaini in a 3. Him and Gibson would in theory could rotate the sitting and box to box running.

I am not saying he is toure, far from it. But, most premier league teams now lack legs as most have crabs (carrick, mikel, Barry), whilst the old box to box players are well, old (Gerard, scholes, lampard, arteta?). He should be a top player with his skill, pace and technique. Next season he needs to deliver his promise and the shackles (moyes or confidence) need to come off. It's not been good enough and if he can't displace Neville or Cahill he has problems, but how old is he again?

Give him a chance.

Yeah he still is young but for whatever reason his progression has been slow.Even before Gibson's arrival he should of had licence to get forward more as Fellaini was always sitting deep.

I hope he comes back next season determined, aggressive and more direct. He has ability but if he doesnt change his mind set I dont think he will ever be more than average.

I don't think we need I CB infraction believe we could let one go as we have no European football next year. I would sell jag as should get about 8 mill for him and he is older that heit. Other CB's have no real value.
Would also hope to get 3 mil for yobo and 2 mil for anichebe. That would give us about 13 mil which should be plenty for pienaar, Donovan and hoilett. I would consider letting osman, Cahill or Hibbert go for the right price if they wanted to leave. I know letting anichebe go leaves us short up front but Donovan can play there, I quite fancy gueye playing up top.

This smells of Moyes to Hugh Heaven: we're always being linked with goalies and centre-backs, aren't we. Huth? Fucker turned us down a few years for Boro. No thanks. Huth-ball all day long: 24/7, 365 days a year.

Mr Moyes, I'm sure that this is gutter Grub St reportage, rumour-mongering, fill up the column space bollocks. Would be nice to have strong credible links to (1) creative mildfielder (2) someone out wide (3) full back - left or right, tho.

Not sure about Stephen as I have never seen him play, but Martin is certainly a good prospect. Doubt he would ever come over to us though.

We also still have Yobo on the books, who is a better all round player than Huth. What we need is a right back, seeing as Coleman is not seen as the answer. Just like Rodwell has been played in midfield or not at all, Moyes thinks players need to be about 30 before they can be trusted in defence

Rodwell might work if Moyes allows him to express himself going forward. We all saw what he did to Man Utd a season back running from midfield and scoring Rooney-esq. I prefer Rodwell in the Cahill slot, he has pace, can tackle, scores goals, can defend deep and is skillful. Why would SAF give us £10mil for him if he is so fucking useless? Form and confidence is all he needs and we have a very good player who is England class.

Whilst we kept the goals against down to good numbers last season we have to consolidate. Jags.was not what he used to be and Heitinga did okay. Distin is still commanding but not getting younger and Duffy doesn't appear to cut the mustard yet in Moyes eyes. Forget Neville and Hibbert!!!.
Huth is pretty useful and I for one would welcome him.

Drew - carrick and Barry are crabs. It's my opinion and neither would be in either midfield if they weren't

A) English
B) united had cash for a decent replacement

They are lucky to be on the reputed wages they are on, and are million miles behind lampard and gerrard who thy should be looking to replace.

Any decent team would fancy playing these two. United will doing nothing in Europe with him, whilst city fell apart without toure.

One paced crabs. You can add Milner in as well.
